There are two logical reasons to that. The anchor was probably trying to help maintain an air of calm - he didn't want listeners to panic. That sort of thing has happened, and caused other issues (just look at the War of the Worlds debacle). The second, he may not have been fully processing the danger he himself was in until near the end of the broadcast. Either way, props to him for maintaining his calm in a dangerous situation - not many people could do that.

i’m a forensics minor and in one of my classes last year we did a case study on the Bradford fire. Our class watched the entirety of the video documenting the fire’s progression, and lemme tell you the sheer _SPEED_ at which the fire intensified is something I will NEVER unsee. I often compare it to the King’s Cross Station fire, which occurred in London 2 years after the Bradford fire and cost 31 people their lives. Ironically, it was found to have been caused by a carelessly-tossed lit match (likely from someone lighting a cigarette) that fell into the escalators and ignited the wooden materials, further fed by the flammable debris underneath. I guess what I’m trying to say is that it really highlighted just how avoidable both this disaster and the King’s Cross fire were, but also how many lives have been saved since then following the enactment of stricter building protocols.

Her grieving father, Sam Knott, was the mind behind the garden. He turned a place where tragedy occurred to a place where his family and others can come together and pay tribute to their loved ones who were murdered. Sam planted acorn saplings that were from their backyard to the garden, dedicating them to his deceased daughter. It is said that those acorn trees continue to grow throughout the county to this day.

They all said that as they were falling, they regretted their decision and realized that they didn't actually want to die, they just wanted something to change in their life. That's often the case with suicidal people. The fear of death is so deeply ingrained into our psyche that most of us, no matter how depressed we are, truly do want to live. I used to struggle with suicidal ideation, so this is something I keep reminding myself to keep the thoughts from returning. And so far, it works.

One of the most haunting images from the Bradford fire was when the cameras caught someone walking out of the inferno. They were completely on fire. Police and spectators got to him almost immediately to put the fire out, but he died in hospital later that day. Some of those trapped in the upper stands chose to try and get through the inferno to get to the pitch. AFAIK, very few of those made it out alive. Even police were coming out of the stands with hair or coats on fire. Hooligans were on the pitch chanting team songs and cheering on the flames while people were burning alive behind them. It was utter bedlam.
After that the commentator said, "This... is human tragedy." And it was. He'd gone from documenting a joyous occasion - a league trophy hoisting with his home team for the first time in 80 years - to a total disaster.

I'm so glad that man survived his attempt! The rescue crew worked so and so efficiently, and it was clear this guy really wanted to live; I can't imagine being half submerged in fast, freezing water for over an hour and having any strength left at all. Most people who survive these split second decisions regret them and never try again, so I hope he got help for his gambling problem and turned his life around.
As soon as you said they were bringing a helicopter in to try for air rescue, I assumed they would be approaching from the cliff side of the falls specifically because of the draft from the rotor. It's wild to me that they tried the approach from the river side, but you can see they were trying to come up alongside so he wasn't buffeted too badly. I can only assume they picked that approach because he would have been backwards and couldn't watch for when the harness/rope if they came from the cliff side, or maybe the spray off the falls would have made it difficult to operate; helicopters are pretty finicky machines, so they can only really work in specific conditions.

I've lived in Bradford my whole life, still do and the Bradford City fire disaster is still remembered and talked about to this day, there's a remembrance plaque in the centre of the city with all the victims names on it. Some of the worst footage, all of it screened live on TV at the time, is horrific, there's footage of a man walking out of the stand after about 2 minutes and he's completely engulfed in flames, people rushed to help and a police officer threw his jacket over him and jumped on top of him to try and put out the flames, he got badly burned trying to help the guy but it was for nothing as he sadly died.

The guy in the parking booth just waved me through to the empty lot, assuring me it was ok to park however I wanted so I could get out. (I was towing an empty 30 foot boat trailer.) I park across a row of spaces and get out and he approaches and tells me "dude, just go in. Enjoy the view. You got about 2 and a half hours."
I walked in, took the quick stroll through one of the gardens, and found my way to the observation deck. And I would have been completely alone up there, if there hadnt been a younger couple smooching on the deck.

There is no restrictions on going wherever. You never see a rat or bird being shooed away just by existing and drinking in nature.... How extremely sad to have to be at specific places on the ground. It's an actual dystopia if that is the case! Like no one can actually own the earth. They will die one day, and who "owns" it then????

The insane part about this story to me is that it happened on a Monday evening. A work day evening. You're incredibly lucky to have had those circumstances on that day.
I've been able to enjoy the Falls free of charge with zero crowd on two separate occasions. Both of them were on a weekend, and pretty much right after sunrise. The booth at the Skylon Tower parking lot wouldn't be open until 9 am, so parking was free there on both occasions. Not sure if that's still the case now though cuz the last time I did this was in 2021.
Edit: I should add, this is all on the Canadian side. Not sure if the same would ring true for the American side. Our side is one of the most heinous tourist traps in the country, so it was a huge deal to me that I could get free parking before everything opened up. The Falls parking lot uses machines instead of people now so there's no way to get free parking there lol.

@@fudgerounds91 funny you say that. I was doing this shipping and hauling gig, picking up cargo and driving it from one Destination to another. Did a lot of boats and RVs being shipped after online sales, some manufacturer to customer delivering, and "snow bird" moving up and down the east coast.
I started doing it at 31, having never been west of Alberquerqe, north of OKC, or east of Texarkana. About a week into my first road trip, I decided that I should collect trinkets. Not uncommon, as people collect trinkets like magnets, seashells/rocks, stickers, or other marketed to tourist junk to commemorate their travels..... I chose lottery scratch tickets, as well as the commonly collected refrigerator magnet shaped like the state. I'd grab 5 bucks worth of scratchers in every state that offered them.

There are so so many horror stories from the Bradford City fire, the one that gets me every time is Paul Hudson, our local weather guy (or meteorologist) said on a documentary that there was an old man who was waiting for his change from a cup of tea while the fire was happening, people were telling him to leave, there was a fire, and it was getting closer but the old man would not leave until he got his change from his cup of tea. That gets me every time. This was also the year after the Oxford Circus Tube fire and two years before Kings cross. I've read Martin Fletcher's book and that has left me with a lot more questions, I've read the abstract of the Popplewell report and can't help wondering if he was the correct pick to chair the inquiry, I'm comparing it to the Cullen and Hidden reports and the Taylor report, and feel that Popplewell's report, doesn't live up to the standard set by the other reports however, a view shared by Martin Fletcher, a survivor of both Bradford City and Hillsborough disasters
EDIT: There was a lot of good that came out of the disaster, though to put it into context the 70s/80s in the UK had a lot of issues with football hooliganism and the police worked matches in a certain way (see Hilsborough as well and everything surrounding that), however as told by a retired officer I know, once the severity of the disaster was realized, which did not take long, the police helped in any way they could but it affected everyone in various ways

When Kelvin McKenzie was quoted by the BBC during the whole Huw Edwards story last year I was sat there thinking you absolute bastard, you have no right to speak on how the press should behave given all he's done while in charge of the Sun, and all the controversies he was a part of then he sits there and chirps on about press should do this and this and that, and yet he's not exactly got a clean past, even before Hillsborough he was in hot water over his treatment of the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano during the Falklans War and how the Sun treated the attack

7:57 The person you showed was of a very famous man named Karl Wallenda who exceeded in the ability to balance himself on extremely thin ropes while holding long poles. And Karl Was filmed on live tv doing the daredevil stunt. But then suddenly he started losing his balance. And he started shaking and crouched down. After realizing he was about to fall, he couldn’t do anything and could only think about this for 3 seconds before he fell off the rope on live tv. The camera didn’t show him hitting the floor but instead it showed 100 people flocking to where he fell in a desperate act to save him. Sadly, he passed away due to the fall. It was extremely shocking.

Hillsborough's disaster however was not because of a fire, but through incompetence of the police and unlike the Bradford Fire, had a much stronger public response to both the structure of UK football stadiums, and the classist treatment of working-class people in newspaper coverage.
Appreciate this series a lot for showing the fascinating- but-morbid relationship between crime and entertainment in today's world. Suggestion for part 5.
In the early 19's and the late 80's Dale Earnhardt Sr was at one of the best NASCAR drivers in the sport winning 7 titles over that span.
Towards the end of his career he had the opportunity to race against his son Dale Earnhardt Jr who at that time was just starting his NASCAR Winston Cup career and Dale was still winning races. In 2000 he won at Talladega Superspeedway with a great rally from 15th to 1st in a few laps. Everyone was shocked with this rally and they cheered so loud for Dale. But what they didn't know was that they witnessed his last ever win of his brilliant career...
Now it's 2001 and Dale was going into another Daytona 500. And he won this race a few years prior in 1998 with 20 years of trying. And he was racing alongside Dale Jr and his team driver Michael Waltrip.
Over the race Dale was making very very aggressive moves all day and with a few laps to go Dale's team were 1,2 and in 3rd was Dale Sr and coming down the backstretch for the final time in the race Waltrip was leading with Dale Jr right behind him... but in 3rd Dale Sr was racing very aggressive and blocking all the way down the backstretch. In the booth Michael's brother Darrell Waltrip was hoping Michael would get his first career win and everything was going well...
Until they went into turn 3 Dale Sr got turned by Ken Schrader into the wall very hard. But no one noticed it at first in the booth and they were racing back to the line and everyone was all happy. But Darrell Waltrip said "I hope Dale's alright that was a hard hit." After the race Ken Schrader went over to Sr's car and he was calling for the paramedics in a panic and then. Things took a dark turn...
Paramedics took Dale to a hospital in a ambulance to while Michael Waltrip is celebrating his win in Daytona Victory Lane and he is told by someone in the garage about Dale and him and Jr rushed to the hospital to check on Dale but there was nothing they could do to save Dale Earhardt...
He was pronounced dead the next day and the president of NASCAR made a speech confirming his death. A day that was suppose to be full of joy and happiness was turned to sadness in a span of a few minutes and all of it was broadcasted live on TV.

It's not anyones fault other than him though, he should have been the one to go "hmm, I've never used a GPS before, I wonder how it works.."! But for nobody around to think it's year 2008, GPS was not that common device back then and here is around 60‐year old priest (as older people are known for being so tech‐savvy), maybe make sure he knows his way around those devices? But of course everyone just assumed he knew, which tells me there were nobody professional in charge of safety

I’m from Yorkshire and I can’t believe I’ve never heard of the Bradford Fire.
I think it gets overshadowed by another soccer incident, the Hillsborough crush, idk if you’ve ever covered it. This happened in the area I live in, so probably why we focussed on that at school.
It’s such a tragedy when a lack of care from the higher-ups leads to lives cut short.
Brilliant video as usual! You’re one of the few respectful “dark media” RUclipsrs I know.
