He did a more phenomenal job playing the scumbag he was in Tombstone... Dude looks 15 years younger in this movie than he did in that movie that was made 20 years before this.

Note how the very first shot of Quaritch are his boots clunking on the floor in an almost ominous, delibrate, punctuated manner. The second shot is his holstered gun, the third the scar on his face. It's everything you need to know about the guy in less than 10 seconds.
I always thought Quaritch was a one-note military dick villain. But the more I rewatch Avatar, the more I see the depth to his character. It isn't spoonfed to you but you can gather he really does care about his soldiers and doesn't want to start a ground war for no reason with the populace.

I feel like it was a bit of a hat on a hat for the arrows to have a neurotoxin. For the sake of the movie, the aliens were roughly 1 and 2/3rds the size of a human. The arrows were the size of a small javelin. I feel like that's more than deadly enough to describe
the arrows are for the pandoran wildlife which are pretty or fast enough you might only scratch them with an arrow. To humans theyre toxic material tipped 50 caliber bullets. To the navy its standard issue.
They are mainly for hunting the indigenous wildlife, which are much bigger than an average Navi. Hence the need for poison arrows. Poison or not, the bows are the equivalent of literal javelins so humans are practically dead meat even if they get a glancing shot
Quaritch was a much more interesting character than it was shown, he was extremely aware of his situation and seemed to truly care not only for the missions success, but to also make his men as safe as possible, yet he was also willing to kill thousands of Na'vi to get unobtanium to sell and destroy another planet like had happened to the Earth without showing any remorse for his actions.
@@TY-PO War Crimes don't apply to aliens and the RDA had been on the planet for a long time at that point. The Energy crisis on Earth never made sense to me as any civilization that has interstellar travel would surely find enough resources to solve power issues without having to result to war. Even then it's clear to me that it's possible the Navi use mind control and may have used Jake as a tool. The RDA has no reason to put their hands up and leave and it's not like they were the aggressors first as said in the movie.

Colonel Quaritch is the most interesting and badass character in cinematic history. Jake Sully is the most uninteresting one too. Quaritch should have been the good guy and Sully the villain.
I must admit that it's hard to tell who's good and who's evil. Quaritch destroyed the locals tree but if I remember correctly he did try to find another alternative through Jake. So at least he wasn't a freaking barbarian, just a strategist that didn't have any card left.
Sully betrayed his own species. Quaritch was just doing his job. The movie obviously tried to make him look like an evil villian, but to be honest, it failed. He actually has real and believable motives. And let's be real here, he is an absolute *BADASS.*
If quaritch was the protagonist, this movie would probably be a bit more boring. I mean, you're not exactly supposed to be away for too long from your protagonist's POV. Imagine the stuff Quaritch deals with daily, but on screen. Maybe better with timeskips.
