Jame Cameron naive world view was what ruined for me. He tried to make it an allegory to colonization of the America, except the backstory of WHY the RDA was there is because Earth is dying. Humanity was literally on the verge of extinction. This isn't the same as the colonization or even the dreaded East India Company, this is a mission to save humanity at all cost. And to the RDA credit, they tried diplomacy and trade agreements but the Navi lets just say were very hostile to the idea. Hence the idea of using Avatars to blend in came about in the first place. Quaritch just happened to the guy with a very unforgiving task of keep everyone (humans) alive on Pandora and on a short time line to save Earth aka home.

Living in Kansas as I do, I understand the antiquated and silly reference to my state.

First time i saw this movie i was fresh out of the Army. Naturally i initially took the side of the military. By the end of the movie the movie though I was on the Navi's side.

Cameron knows how to introduce characters - he's gotten it down to an art. Note how the very first shot of Quaritch are his boots clunking on the floor in an almost ominous, delibrate, punctuated manner. The second shot is his holstered gun, the third the scar on his face. It's everything you need to know about the guy in less than 10 seconds.

They need to include a flashback to show us where Quaritch got the scar.

I think a lot of people missed the fact this is a reference to the Wizard of Oz
