there is a study that proves that the decision is already made in the mind before we are consciously aware of it. I am not sure how much this can be applicable to our decisions (the study was conducted on physical movements, iirc).
Basically what I want to say is, believe what is useful, not necessarily what's true. Derek Sivers said this somewhere.

There is also a take opposing fate, that you are always responsible for whatever happens to you. It kind of is your responsibility that you got into a car accident, as you were the one who decided to live in an urban area with a lot of cars and poor roads. I mean you didn't consciously choose this, as we tend to focus on the good things when we choose. Note that responsibility and fault do not mean the same thing.
