Omg I can't believe this video has been around for 2 years! I bought this camera almost 3 years ago and had no idea how to focus on a face! I had to trash most of my videos because they kept coming out blurry. Thanks a ton!
Glad its helped. What you can also do (and by looking at some of your videos, you might do this already) is use more light and then increase the aperture so then the depth of field is much wider so when you move backwards and forwards, you are always in focus. Another thing you can do, is to install the Canon EOS utility on your computer and then you can see yourself on the laptop screen and can keep checking if your in focus. Your stuff is in focus, but it might help someone else.
Hey Stephi Udr, the best way to focus without, or with very minimum noise is to flick the lens into manual and focus as you film. But you may still get some vibration noise. Another idea is to put the camera in aperture priority and set it to like f11 (depending on the light) and then you will have a wide depth of field so moth t hings should be in focus. There are loads of other ideas, but you could record the audio with an external device and then it does not matter about the noisy lens?
You will see at 2.37 I change the video size. This also changes the framerate. • 1080p (1920) @ 20fps • 720p (1280) @ 30fps • VGA (640) @ 30fps Are you wanting to do slow motion?
I need some help ASAP :S I want to shoot video but i getsy really blurry. Its about shooting breakdance moves so it has to shoo really well fast mooving objects. Is this possible with this camera. I alsol need slow motion when editing but HD. Sorry for the noob question but i am more into breakdancing than in to shooting. Help mi please. I only have the camera till tomorow :(
You only have a very small range in the standard Canon software. If you want to play with feamerates, Your best bet would be to invest some time in learning the Magic Lantern software, there is not much you cannot change with that baby installed on your 500D. I use it every day in my 5D2, the best mod I have found are the focus assistants so if I don't have my external monitor, you can make sure your filming in focus! Let me know how you get on. :-)
I have the 500D and I have two questions. I want to video record tennis match and keep in focus is there a way to this manually also I would like to play back in slow motion is 1280 best setting for slow motion?
I’ve never used the video on my camera before but I’m going to try and video my pilates classes for my clients. This video has been really useful. Any tips on what I should/ shouldn’t do as I’m moving around standing then lying on the mat or will the ‘zoom in’ tip focus keep me in focus all the time? Any tips greatfully received !
Is there a way to change the frame rate to 60fps? This camera doesn't have an auto-focus, does it? Say if you move the camera closer to someone, will it auto adjust to keep the face in focus?
How to you do self timed shot on this camera, I followed the manual instructions and it said click on self timer and then start button which I did but nothing happens. Is the start button the PLAY button? If not what is the START button? and how do I set the secs rate?
right, pressed button to record and it counts so i presume its recording. i ve pressed again to stop, then pressed play and nothing there. how hard can it be
It's my first camera and i have it for 12 years ! So old ! i'm sad we can't change exposure because I cant film the moon for example. It s like a big light, impossible to see any detail... it's time to change I guess... :(
on video mode you can actually change the exposure , click and hold on the Av button and roll the switch on top , and you will see the video gets brighter or darker , when you get a nice exposure to your video click on the ISO button to Lock the exposure .
just watched this and still don,t understand it. can you just turn it to video and go? i, ve tried to follow the settings, then video goes to autofocus without telling how to do that step. when i turn camera to video setting it goes straight to the autofocus bit . Then what
hi I use the canon 500d also. but when I set mine on video mode it doesn't give me the same option as it gives you.i can't even film in video mode except on camera mode only.pleease help
finally a video that goes through all of the settings...Thank you for this video I had no idea how to focuse on this camera, i recently shot a small movie but it was really blurry at time becuase i had no idea how to focus... is there a way to have the camera auto focus or thats not possible in this type of camera? thank you again
I have this camera as well, find out that if you want to make a recording you can not change the ISO, shutter speed or aperture to record, I really wish it did but all of them options are set to automatic for recordings, only better cameras would enable you to change those settings for the recordings
Hi, The camera does not have an external microphone. I would suggest (Budget dependant) you buy a solid state recorder like a H4N or a small audio recorder (depends what audio you want to capture and how many people) like the Sony ICDBX140 and an external microphone to plug into it like an Audio-Technica ATR-3350. This is a low cost setup for an interview and then you just match the audio to the video in your software. If you have loads of audio tracks and you cannot be bothered to match them yourself, you can always use a Sony Vegas plugin called PluralEyes. Have fun.
I have this problem when I start to record and then I have a bar in the right side where it has like squares where they get from grey to white, and then the videos stops recording.. how can I fix this problem?
It sounds like your camera is hitting its buffer with the memory card. If the memory card you have is a slow one (possibly a low cost one), the camera still sends the data to the card at the same speed as it would a fast one and if the card cannot accept the data, then the camera uses an internal buffer to try to help resolve this problem, but if the buffer fills up and the card has not caught up, then it will stop recording. If it is a fast card, try formatting it with the camera rather than your computer as this may help or borrow a card from a friend and see if that fixes it. Good luck!
You can auto focus in video mode by pressing the ae lock button (*), but the lens makes loads of noise and you have to keep pressing it so is a big nono! The best thing to do is to set the lens to manual focus and do it live when taking the video. I never use auto focus when filming in video mode, even on my 7D or 5D2. Thanks for teh comments.
I get your joke, but actually in 1920s you could choose the framerate, and shoot in 24 fps if you wanted to. unlike with cannon 500d, which doesn't give you that opportunity 100 years later.
and you can not focus using shutter button ... pfff . Anyway ...the autofocus on 500D it's completely useless . they should better not ionclude this option

Dorset Creative the 500D video setting are mostly auto so how did you adjust aperture?
OMG! Thank you so much for tutorial! I had lost the user guide and forgot how to operate my machine.
Thanks a lot, I was having a lot of trouble figuring this out and getting much frustrate! All my questions answered in a succinct video :-)
the zoom button helps you to focus manual before you start recoording . auto focus works in the same way even if you soom in
someone in 2024

Bump - I have the same issue.
Bump - I also
What about choosing the picture quality? I read 720P works well with the SDHC cards this camera is limited to.
How to you do self timed shot on this camera, I followed the manual instructions and it said click on self timer and then start button which I did but nothing happens. Is the start button the PLAY button? If not what is the START button? and how do I set the secs rate?
Are you wanting to do some slow motion stuff? If so, you will need to take it in 720 and then slow it down some more in after effects.
Thanks. I dont know how to remove the cap. Very helpful!
right, pressed button to record and it counts so i presume its recording. i ve pressed again to stop, then pressed play and nothing there. how hard can it be
when turning camera on i press the buttons for focus and it doesn,t do what video does. it clicks the shutter, no whirring trying to focus

Thank you for this video. It helped me very much. :D
How can i adjust the ISO when filming ?
Arwa I really want to know this have you worked it out?

Hi does the camera have a port for an external MIC? Thanks.
Hi,
The camera does not have an external microphone. Can I change the shutter speed when it's in video mode? I want to be able to take more frames per second in video, but I'm not sure if I can.
Brilliant Video, thanks for sharing this quick one. Off to make a video now:)
Yeah. Is it possible to do more than that?
I have this problem when I start to record and then I have a bar in the right side where it has like squares where they get from grey to white, and then the videos stops recording.. how can I fix this problem?
It sounds like the memory card is too slow. You could take the camera to a shop and test it with a faster memory card.
thank you this has really helped me understand how to focus :)
how do you avoid it recording for only 33 seconds?
It sounds like your camera is hitting its buffer with the memory card. If the memory card you have is a slow one (possibly a low cost one), the camera still sends the data to the card at the same speed as it would a fast one and if the card cannot accept the data, then the camera uses an internal buffer to try to help resolve this problem, but if the buffer fills up and the card has not caught up, then it will stop recording.

thanks!
McChulo you probably have a slow sd card. I had the same problem. You must buy an high speed sd card. It should have the number 10 in a circle
Awesome, Make sure you post your video in the video response so I can check it out.

why don't i see any video mode
Is it a EOS400d?
It'S eos 500d :/
Great, make sure you post your video reply, so I can see what you did.
What the video doesn't mention though is that you can only shoot 20fps in 1920.
thats an amazing framerate for the 1920's im sure you blew peoples minds back then
I get your joke, but actually in 1920s you could choose the framerate, and shoot in 24 fps if you wanted to. unlike with cannon 500d, which doesn't give you that opportunity 100 years later.
Bad joke I know... ya learn something new every day I guess
i tried all the steps but the video was black :(
I know it sounds silly, but was the lens cap on?
parabens ajudou em nada
Lah carane pie gen iso pokus dewe, gen ga mencet mncet meneh
Wooo slow down please. It's impossible to follow you whipping through and passing each step at full speed.
and you can not focus using shutter button ... pfff . Anyway ...the autofocus on 500D it's completely useless . they should better not ionclude this option
1 Minute 33 Seconds tell me that does not sound exactly like Stewie Griffin
how do you avoid it recording for only 33 seconds?
Kalle get a faster SD card eg Class 40MB/s or higher
