I have a Hyundai Santa Fe Sport that I'm about to live in, literally, as of later today when the eviction popo knock on my door. It's so reassuring to see your vehicle, pretty much identical to mine and know that so much can be done to improve the space requirements for living. What's really hard is that I have a nearly full time job and have to have multiple uniforms handy, meaning that my everyday clothing will be severely limited. I've decided on shorts, tank tops and lightweight kimono dusters to survive the Texas heat and humidity. I love what you've done in offering us new nomads fresh hope and ideas to explore.
Agree you have done a very good job. I like the idea you do not want to damage any of the original vehicle. I also like idea about storage under the bed. Only issue with this is for claustrophobics like me bed is too close to ceiling.
I rarely comment Videos, but this deserves coming back again just to comment it. I happened to watch this one first and then second the "making of". Both videos are very, very nice. Great job. Both of you take time to answer every comment, that is really rare and kind. Hope to see more of your videos, maybe the exterior of your camper too and frequent practicality checks and maybe improvements. Take care!
Hello again! ...and sorry for the delay in my answer. We're long term traveling and I'm afraid we're not paying enough attention to some things, like our YT chanel hahaha. Thank you so so much for your kind words :-) they are a very nice detail that makes us smile and want to make more videos :-D We have been traveling without our SUV for more that half a year now... and we don't have a finishing date, so we don't know when we will be getting to hit the road with "our creation" again. We miss it, though! It's the best way to travel. In any case, that time comes, because sooner or later we know it will, we'll surely make some improvements and hopefully some more videos. Take care and happy travels!
I am looking at videos like yours to give me ideas of how to arrange my van. You have your van build well thought out. I love it. RUclips suggested your video and I was not disappointed. Hope you will make more videos of your journey. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words :) Now we are traveling through Asia, but we definitely want to do more travels with our camper SUV... and hopefully more videos as well!
Very well done, I like the kitchen setup, the bed, and the storage area underneath the bed. I too have a SUV and like day trips and a few 2-3 overnights thrown in the mix. Your conversion was quite creative, inexpensive, and something most of us rookies could do ourselves. Thanks for the ideas and sharing your camper conversion with us. Best wishes...a new subscriber.
Hey Jess and Pedro! Jess, I wrote on your FB for your bday today and I saw your Beating Road posts and it brought me here to your channel. I love what you did with the vehicle! You have many clever solutions for storage, sleeping etc. I imagine it is a blast to road trip in that thing... you’re living in relative luxury. I will be sure to check in on your channel and Instagram to follow your travels. Have fun and keep up the great work!
Hey Jordan! Thanks for your kind words, that means a lot coming from an engineer as yourself :) We certainly had a blast and it is a lifestyle that we could get use to! I think eventually we would like to upgrade to a van that we can stand in, as our setup is perfect for good weather it left a lot to be desired on those rainy days. Thanks again for your feedback!
Happy to have found your channel! I really enjoyed this video, especially the detail you included. Keep up the great work, take care and safe travels! :)
Very well done adaptation of your SUV/Crossover. I'll keep your features in mind as I (slowly) adapt my 2000 Ford Expedition for the same use. Expect to start my tour of the USA's BackCountry in 2020 with my GSD Pup.
Hey Jessica & Pedro, thanks for this first of all! your website is offline, so was wondering if you could republish that "in-depth guide" somewhere? appreciated!
It is all very well in a nice weather and really nicely built but how do you manage when it rains and you need move and out of the car to eat/cook/walk/etc.?
This is really great! So many clever ideas. :-) I'm curious why you roll up the bed, though, since it seems like rear visibility while driving would be much better with the bed laid out flat. I'm sure you have a good reason for the method you chose. Thanks!
Hi R Yee, and thanks for your comment! The whole length of the bed (and the mattress) can only be achieved by sliding the front seats all of the way forward. When driving, we needed to fold the last part of the bed board and roll up the mattress, in order to have the necessary space for the front seats. Rear visibility loss was not too bad.
We used a lot of blankets lol! We wished we would had brought a small battery powered space heater for the really cold nights, but blankets and body heat were sufficient in most cases.
Your vehicle is similar to mine and trying to steal some of your ideas. I have a 2016 kia sorento so basically the same layout. Thanks for the many ideas i have already learned from you. Im claustrophobic so the bed being so close to the roof i feel like would mess with me really bad
Love you two💞this was the best suv camping one that I have seen. Yo man looks like famous Ben Coehon. My Jewish friend, who writes books about old beans from all over the world. Anyway I think he looks like my JESUS that lives in my heart. I can't help it 🙏👣✌💞🎶🌹🎶😁😇😄Thank You BELOVED💞
Did you make or purchase the mosquito screen for the window? I am fitting out my Ford Escape for summer weekend camping. You have given me lots of good ideas. Thanks.
How do you feel about not being able to sit down or sit up in your bed? I feel like i would go crazy only being able to lay down. If you wake up in the middle of the night or stuck inside because of bad weather, how do you deal with that?
Very good...I am brasiliam...you have a lot of good ideas ... one question: do you sleep with the windows of the car closed or leave a little open? I know it's very cold there, but when it's hot ... can you sleep normally?
Hi, 68cristian and thank you for your kind words :-) I wish that one day we could go to your beautiful country to enjoy the camper life! That´s a dream!
BRILLIANT! I especially love the kitchen setup. Can you tell me the height from the platform to the roof? (If you don't have a tape measure, maybe use shoes and let me know the shoe size you are using.) Thank you for this video-- this is exactly the same style of travel we've been looking for.
Thanks! Sorry for the delay... we're currently long-term traveling around the world, away from our SUV. I'm sorry I can't do what you ask me right now. Maybe in some sections of the video, like in 1:14, where you can see a resusable shopping bag, you can make a close estimation of that height. I don't want to mislead you, but I'd say it must be around 30 inches.
Hello ! Good job :) I am thinking to adapt something like that in my mazda CX5. But the problem is that i am not sure that is allow in France (security issue) Didier
Hi Didier! Thanks for your comment! That is a good question. We didn't have a single problem in the US or Canada. I'm from Spain myself, and always wondered if our camper would be "legal" in Spain, France or other countries in Europe, where regulations are so strict... but I don't know. I wish I could help more. If I ever find out, I'll let you know. Please, do the same if you do! Regards and good luck with your project!
In general, Spanish law (and I guess most of EU countries has it similar) allows the driver to sleep in the vehicle as long as it is correctly parked. It is the right of the driver to rest if necessary. What is important, however, one cannot leave any objects outside the car, I mean tent, parasol, table, chairs etc. That would go under 'camping' and this is only legal in certain designated areas. So technically speaking, as long as you park your car correctly, you can unfold your chairs, make the bed, go to sleep for as long as you need, keeping all your belongings inside the vehicle. If the police comes over, you may have to explain you are not camping, but resting before the journey. This is your right and they cannot tell you to drive away if you are parked correctly. This is the theory, now when you get an asshole cop, which may happen, this may not go so nice and smooth, they may start checking you up, searching the car etc... Just to show you they have the power to make your life harder. ;-)
@@Andek74 Thanks for such a detailed and informative response. I recently read exactly what you're saying about the spanish law regarding sleeping in the car... which is really great to know :) However, what I believe JustOutdoor was trying to figure out (and also myself) is if building this kind of structures inside of a vehicle would be approved, authorized, allowed... by the EU laws. I'm afraid I can't provide an accurate answer, but I know that vehicle inspections in Spain are pretty strict when it comes to heavy modifications of the vehicle's original features. Lastly, I think you're completely right about the difference between the theory and the cop you may potentially encounter in your way. That's why is so important to know what the law says! ;)
I would definitely 'restore my car interior to default' before undergoing the compulsory technical inspection (ITV) in Spain, just in case they would have objections about the wooden case instead of rear seats etc. They can be really meticulous at times. Then again, it's a bit of a box of chocolate situation - you never know who you gonna get ;-)

Awesome, this gave me a lot of ideas for my Acadia. I guess you strapped your spare to the roof since you can't access where it normally would be. Nice Job 👍

Thanks for all the great ideas you two! Great job!! I will be trying some of these on my suv camper!
Simple but extremely effective. Great work guys! Hi from Australia. 👍
Fantastic build... you are a great couple... wishing you much love and happiness.

Mosquito screen fits perfectly...? What about the opening at the bottom?
The tools box! We climb the seats backward? OMG. Love it. p.s. I'm sure you heard already the music volume blew my freaking ears off.
Thank you for your words... and sorry for the volume!
What kind of vehicle you turned to sleep space
How much headroom is there from the top of the mattress to the headliner? In inches. it seems pretty cozy.
We can't be certain but we think it's around 30 inches...
Yes def. Way too tight pour moi.
I was wondering if a Santa Fe would be big enough for two. Thanks!
Hi Al! We slept there for over two months and it was surprisingly comfortable!

It's a Eureka gonzo grill. We bought it at REI.
It serves as a griddle, grill and stove. We love it!
