If you buy a black cloth to hide stuff under.... The best cloth is black velvet. It eats light. I used it as a backdrop when I needed a black background when I photographed jewelry. Even when a cop shines his flashlight into your car it will not give you away.
Unlike other types of cloth, it does not reflect.

That’s no longer a 4Runner. That’s a damn Batmobile. He sat in the front seat and pulled like 79 things out the door.
I honestly didn’t want to watch this video but hey I love 4Runners and said let’s see what this guy is talking about….
Thirty minutes later I was like why is this over I need more. John is such a cool dude. He’s very analytical and thoughtful, and not only of himself but of others and his environment, not many people are like him nowadays.
I loved the video host edited the video to just let him break the car down without interrupting him, genius. This truck needs to be studied by NASA to ensure every detail can be explored. From the outside it’s a complete mom mobile but John created and overland Batmobile that even James Bond would be proud to have. Amazing.
God bless you John and safe travels.

First: to Tristan for allowing his guest to show his vehicle in his words and his way so the video flows so smoothly - bravo! Second: to John - WOW!!!! AWESOME!!! PRECISION PERFECTION! Never in the hundreds of builds I've viewed have I seen such care taken to meet all ones camping needs (ALL) and keep it perfectly sized to the vehicle so to be stored away in easy reach of what is daily needed and out of sight of what is not. Your foresight in planning was so inclusion of all your needs - even a Safe! You are a camper van without the van size and you are a passenger vehicle that hides a huge secret. All visually clutter free and comfortable. May you have many wonderful travels in front of you.

John is an analytical thinker and planner with clear objective. This is probably the best example of a stealth vehicle. To get a setup like this is not cheap but for the purpose of its existence, it is mostly necessary. I learn a lot watching this video, not about the built but the essence of a built. John, I think I love you! You are even more OCD about 'What If' than I am! I mean, my family used to rent a house we all fit in at OBX or in Tennessee and the kitchens were never completely furnished. So I put together a traveling kitchen that fits in 3 big tote boxes and 2 small packs. It has spatulas, pancake turners, an inexpensive set of sharp knives with covers, tongs of different sizes, dish towels, dish brushes, scrub sponges, serving utensils, serving/storage bowls, cutting boards, dishrack, tray, oh, I don't remember everything, but it is pretty much a full kitchen except for the appliances. And the family has been glad of it! Having what you need is important because it adds to your enjoyment of the trip. And that is what you've done with your SUV. It is darned near perfect! And the limo tint on the windows is brilliant! I don't know if I could pack as light as you when it comes to clothing... That's when my OCD really kicks in. But this is one of the best builds I've seen and the best stealth build, hands down. I think it's all of the truly cool gadgets and geegaws you've installed. Your electric is genius. I think that I may love the changes you made to the rear hatch the most. Being able to open the hatch from the inside, by the hatch, and having a hatch window that opens...Brilliant! Reminds me of when we used to travel in our station wagon and I got to sit in the way-back seat and watched where we'd been.
This is definitely a high-class, gadget-filled, subtle SUV!

I have pretty much the same setup in my Mazda CX-9, minus the off-roading mods. Even the same mattress, but I went with the 6" version with a 2" memory foam topper. Best mattress I've ever had and the same as I use at home. I use custom fitted window covers with the shiny side facing in (nothing says urban camper like reflective window covers), a 19" TV and a 52qt fridge. I built a "shelf" that runs along the full length of the mattress that the fridge sits on, and underneath I've got my batteries and solar electronics and all my cooking gear, with a 180w solar panel painted black mounted on top between the luggage rails so it's pretty much invisible. I mounted a Max Air fan to a panel I made that drops into the sunroof and it pulls a huge amount of air through the vehicle which keeps it cooler and keeps it from smelling like a locker room, and then when I'm moving I remove the fan and stow it behind the seats. I love it.

My mom did some interior design when I was a kid and she would use L brackets for everything - shelving, window treatments, lighting, mounting/hanging art, etc. My dad started making fun of her, when ever there was any problem he'd say to her, "Maybe it just needs an L bracket." This build proves she might have been right. We can solve a lot of problems with L brackets lol

This video is the best of all that I watched on 4Runner. It is A-Z for anyone who wants to customize their 4Runner for overlanding. Very practical, great customizations and brilliantly executed. The car looks like any other 4runner on road without looking odd. Great job and I am saving this for my use.

    Good one. Thank you. 🌻
I also have a 4Runner. I wanted an indoor gym to use when desired. One of the components is overhead grips to use for inclined pullups and chinups. It works great. You can run a doubled rope between the helper handles, with the rope passing through two padded grips that slide back and forth. Or you can do something similar with a bar.
The rest of the gym consists of resistance bands, grip strength devices, and an adjustable hydraulic exerciser, which is much more versatile and useful than usually appreciated, especially if you get creative and make full use of the possibilities - the same can be said for resistance bands, bodyweight exercises, and dynamic tension exercises, including isokinetics, isometrics, and isotonics. Also various yoga and breathing exercises. If you make full use of the possibilities it's really surprising what you can do.

Out of all the vehicles I owned and lived in in Los Angeles while maintaining a full-time office job was my 4Runner. Agreed that the back window is incredibly useful. When I owned a 2014 Subaru I lost space and missed that back window. When I do go travel I'm like him and I wash my clothes that night. Only thing I don't wash every night was my jeans since those don't dry quickly. When I do go for a week somewhere and travel with just my carryon I tend to have 3 outfits too many because I wash my clothing every night. I wish I outfit my 4Runner like this guy
