- In this video I document the process fixing up the 1985 Schwinn World Sport that I picked up on Craigslist. I discovered after taking it apart that part of the rear frame was bent. Thankfully I was able to bend it all back and straighten things out. I cleaned up as many original parts as I could, like the bottom bracket bearings and cranks and front gears. I completely replaced the wheels and rear gear and derailleur. The 700C wheels actually were wider in the rear than what the frame was built for so I also widened the frame using a "Cold Setting" technique. Everything came together quit nicely, including the rear rack. Now I'm able to carry larger loads when we go grocery shopping or on longer bike trips.

If you haven't sold the tools you used for this restoration, I'd buy them from you.
At the 3:13 point in the video you are measuring the bike frame from the rear. How did you know what measurement that was supposed to be?
Hello! I was measuring based on the size of the new tires I had purchased. Hope that helps!
how do you remove the back rim? i have this weird nut on mine
I am not entirely sure what the nut is you are experiencing. But sometimes there are locking washers and you just need to loosen everything all the way. Good luck!
Questions did you use long reach brakes and how did you get the 700 c to fit on the front
The 700c fit in the front fork pretty easily. I don't recall having to bend them out or anything. I do believe the brakes are long reach. Here's a link to the ones I got.

Let me know if you have any other questions! I love my bike, it's my main driver currently. I especially like that it's great for street rides and also the gravel trails nearby.
Nicely done! Impressed by how well you were able to reset the frame and dropouts. I also have an 80s World Sport to which I want to do a similar conversion, 700c hybrid wheels with brifters. May I ask how big a tire the frame will take with your 700 wheels? Trying to see if it would be worth it to me, since I'm mainly considering downsizing to fit bigger tires in there. Thanks!
Thank you! Definitely go slow when cold setting the frame and it will work pretty easily! I put 700x35C on mine and I think it's a perfect size for this frame. Good luck with your bike and let me know if you have any other questions!
Hi, what bike rack are you using on your schwinn world?
Hi,
It's a Topeak Super Tourist DX Tubular Rack
Nice video and enjoyed watching your efforts and cool results. I bought a 1985 Schwinn World (no "Sport" labels on mine) new back in the day. Only bike I have had since then. I got complements when it was new. About 20 years ago I was laughed at on a ride because of how old the bike was at THAT time. Now it's much older (37 years old) and I'll get stopped and questioned because it's cool again!
Thank you! Isn't it funny how trends change!? That's really cool you've had the bike for so long. I bet it (and you) have some great stories to tell of the many miles traveled!
@@MyNextHobby Lots of rides, and it was my main mode of transportation to work for several years during the 2000s (thanks to my boss at the time who got me riding again. She biked as well). One of my favorite memories, however, had nothing to do with me riding my bike. I lent the bike to my college roommate after having it for just several weeks. I had a chain and padlock at that time that I kept around the seat tube before purchasing my kryptonite lock. He borrowed the bike and lock key. He went somewhere, used the chain and and lock, but after leaving his destination did not fully push the padlock back in place. He said he was riding, the chain loosened, and then it went crazy. The chain left a trail of evenly placed scratches down the seat tube on my brand new bike. Thanks, Mike! (He felt bad). They've been there all these years. Hope you build a trove of memories with your bike.
@@georgekinsey4132can you go fast in these things or just keep it commuter speed. I have one now. Found one on offer up. Needs new tires, tubes and wrap. Might switch to white wall tires. I'm just riding it for fun. Here and there maybe a road bike trail. Not really trying to cycle around cars
I had discovered your channel about 3 to 4 weeks ago, because I was searching for MPCNC content. I'm currently in the assembly phase of mine. Anyway, by now I must have watched each video - some of them more than once -, and enjoyed them thoroughly. I especially like how you always explain the process, motivations, and short-comings behind everything you do and the broad span of themes you two explore. Electrifying this bicycle could potentially be a cool project. Since you already have a 3D printer and CNC mill, you could probably manufacture many parts yourself.
Thank you so much for the kind words!! That really means a lot.
I had originally thought about doing an e-bike conversion with this frame but decided against it mostly because of cost and reliability with the conversion options out there. I may still do a conversion on a different bike in the future though using this project - github.com/OpenSourceEBike/TSDZ2_wiki/wiki
Thanks for watching!
Also good luck with your MPCNC!
@@MyNextHobby Thanks for the link! I'll check it out.
