    I own both the SBGN003 and the 16570 Polar and love em both - but the GS definitely gets more wrist time. It’s very hard not to look down at your wrist constantly when wearing it - it sparkles like a diamond and is absolutely flawless. Your video made my day!

    I have the SBGN003 and while I do not own an Explorer II, I do own an Explorer and had a Sea Dweller. The Rolex are good watches but I truly enjoy GS more. The build and accuracy is outstanding. The thing I hate about Rolex is when people notice your watch, they almost always ask if it's a Rolex. And there is something embarrassing and annoying about saying yes, it is a Rolex. If I'm wearing the GS, when I say no, it's a Grand Seiko, people just seem to say oh, ok. If people know, however, it is a great conversation. I just enjoy that so much more.

    I'm a sucker for the 9F movement. I think it has the reliability of a modern quartz watch but still with some soul in it. I can appreciate the thought and effort Grand Seiko engineers put into the watch. What's even greater is that, apart from changing the battery, there's no need to service the watch for life.

    • @CleanClaspCollector
      @CleanClaspCollector 4 года назад +2

      Not entirely true. Service is still needed (and 50 years is a myth despite being a cool tidbit of info) :) Soul is such a stupid thing to require from a watch. How does an automatic have soul a quartz doesn't have? A human's heart beats with a naturally occurring electrical frequency. You could call it a "battery". Automatics have zero of that so you can flip the argument to say automatics are the ones without "soul".:) ---Quote "The heart's pumping action is regulated by an electrical conduction system that coordinates the contraction of the various chambers of the heart"

    I think you'll find Seiko released the Navigator 6117-8000 (1969) before Rolex released the Explorer2 (1971) so although it looks like the Explorer 2 it also looks like their own watch GS have no need to copy Rolex and lower themselves.

      It's clear that you despise Rolex, but I looked up that reference and even though it may have come out first, the SBGN003 clearly took the bezel from the Rolex, which is fine by me. That's inarguably the most famous GMT in the world. Perhaps behind another Rolex, that is.

    • @mrjasonrowland

      Don’t forget Glycine. Rolex “borrowed” the bezel design from Glycine first.

    Great review. I own the SBGN005 (blue variant) and it has been a great complementary piece to my other automatic and SpringDrive pieces. Japanese watches bring me a lot of joy with its both subtle and bold designs. Of course, this piece isn’t exactly new design nor bold...but to your point, the two are subtly different compared to the Explorer, however very much Grand Seiko without betraying their identity nor being a blatant copy.

    Bought mine 6 months ago. Liked it. Then I bought the SBGX117 and decided I only need 1 x 9F watches and put the GMT up for sale. Each day as I opened my watch box I looked at the GMT and it kept catching my eye. I put it on a black strap and it has hardly been off my wrist since. If I sold my watch collection, one watch at a time, this GMT would be the last one standing.

      Very, very different watches. An all steel quartz GMT with date and numbered bezel, vs a three hand automatic on a leather strap with smooth bezel. I mean...I think you should get both...they are so different. They honestly would make a great (and fairly comprehensive) two watch collection. But as different as they both are, both are very versatile. Both can be dressed up or down. I'd give the GS the edge on durability, finishing and accuracy. But with all the strap options and an iconic look, Panerai is a watch for almost any occasion (and the finishing is better than haters would like to admit). Full disclosure, I own a GS dress watch and a Luminor. I love both, but for different reasons.

    • @micahpbt9638
      @micahpbt9638 4 года назад

      @@jdstarek Hey man, that's awesome that you have both! And thanks for the input. I totally agree with you on their versatility. That's what I was looking for: something that is sporty but can be dressed up as well. Love the Radiomir for it's iconic look and rich history. I tried on the GS at a boutique and it's beautiful. One thing that held me back on the GS is it's longevity in terms of it's design. I keep thinking: is this a watch that I will continue to admire after 10 years? Or will be inconsequential down the line? The Panerai is so iconic that even after a 100 years, it will still be a watch with a design dating back to it's origins. I can't say the same for the GMT. Grand Seiko has so many different designs in the same model lines, that it's hard to tell what their iconic design is. AFAIK, the 44GS case style is the only icon they have, but it doesn't apply to the GMT here. Perhaps it is as you say: get both, love both for their individual reasons.
      TL;DR: Panerai more iconic, GS...not so much?

    I nearly bought this watch at the Sydney AD, however after seeing the second hand flow of a GS hibeat 36000, I walked out with a SBGJ203 instead. This 9F watch was very nice looking, I just couldn't justify $5k AUD on a watch which requires a battery change every 3 years. Still a nice watch

    • @ZachBie
      @ZachBie 4 года назад +2

      I think you chose the better watch, but with the hi beat movement needing a ~$500 service every 3-5 years vs. a battery change any watchmaker can do....I think that specific argument starts to fall apart.

    • @JDDD33
      @JDDD33 4 года назад +2

      @@ZachBie it doesn't NEED a $500 service every few years. You only need to service them when/if the timing starts to drift outside of the manufacturers range. I've owned a few other swiss mechanical watches for the past 15 years (which are MUCH cheaper) and they haven't needed servicing. I think a Grand Seiko could probably go 20 years without a service (based on the quality parts/lubricants they use). What's the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

    • @mrjasonrowland
      @mrjasonrowland 2 года назад

      Actually, ANY PERSON can change this battery. Not just any watchmaker. As for servicing mechanical watches, a short drop on the floor could break a mechanical watch. Use tools or ride a motorcycle? Better consider Quartz. One may not have to wait years to service a movement. I have purchased new, high end mechanicals that had to be sent back for servicing within months or even days after purchase. Rare, but much more likely than with a Quartz watch like this one.

      @@mrjasonrowland dont get me wrong, im not saying this is a bad watch, which is why i went to actually purchase it, however then changed my mind. it is a great watch, i just decided to up the ante and go for a more rare watch caliber offering which provides 36000bph. If I go bike riding, or ride my jet ski, its a GShock all day long.

    I've read that the first watch with a bezel like the gs and the explorer ii was actually the Glycine Airman. I actually did this research to find out if the sbgn003 "stole" its bezel design from the explorer ii but turns out both designs are stolen from an earlier make. That said I find it a big turn off in a watch when a design cue is copied from Rolex. That said I'm glad it actually comes from somewhere else. :)

    • @jr956678
      @jr956678 2 года назад +1

      I think what you have read matches what I have read - and seen examples of. The first watch with black 24 hour numerals on a brushed steel bezel was the Glycine Airman in 1953. In 1968, Seiko used a variation of the Gylcine bezel on the Seiko 6117-8000 Navigator Timer. Rolex came out with their version in the 1971 Explorer 2. Rolex borrowed the design cue from Glycine and Seiko - not that the present day Grand Seiko GMT watches "stole" anything from Rolex; this is a 68 year old design.

    I like the bracelet a lot since it’s all brushed, I have on bracelet with polished centres......they take a beating.

    I just picked one up second hand. I'd like to have the polar explorer 2 as well. I think they make a nice pair.

    Seems like the dial is set a bit too deep into the bezel. I personally wouldn't buy it. Perhaps it looks nicer in person. I do like the brand and some of their other models.

    It’s got the design DNA of 60s Rolex and the power of modern tech. Love it. And cheap too, around 2500$. IMHO itd the true spiritual successor to the 16570, just as the Tudor 58 is the successor to the vintage subs. Modern Rolex has a different soul: oversized, over engineered.

    Does the GMT hand completely block the date window when it is at the 3 o'clock position?

    My opinion you nailed it, great video and great point of view. I am kicking myself on which of the two I want . This watch or the Rolex. I personally like the SBGN005 Blue Dial version maybe when the pandemic is over i'll get myself a survival gift lolololol. Thanks again stay safe.

    Now that is beautiful, What a shame it`s not a mechanical automatic, still a fine looking watch.

    Rolex explorer is not designed as a GMT watch. It can be used in that function, but it was designed as a 24 hour hand synchronized to the same time zone to differentiate night from day in cave environments.

    I've been looking at this damn watch since its release and after missing out on the SBGN001, I can't decide whether I want the 3 or the 5. I like the red GMT hand more, but the rehaut quality on the blue part seems to be below par. I'm also not sure if I need *another* blue watch. Why is this so damn complicated?

      I know. Tough choice. I went black for a few reasons. One, the matching date wheel. Two, the blue looked black in most light anyway. Three, I also have too many blue watches already. Four, the inky black is more versatile. Can’t go wrong either way.

    Stunning watch! I love quartz and in this watch at this price. Deal of the century. How about a polar version?

  • @SCTitan06
    @SCTitan06 2 года назад

    You can buy roughly 3 of these for the price of the Rolex. If you want the automatic version then you could buy roughly 2 for the price of the Rolex. Not sure what that translates into exactly but it's a hard pill to swallow unless you absolutely must have the Rolex. Both are excellent watches.
