How To Fit a (4 x 4) FENCE POST to a WALL | Gate post

- Here I show you how to fit a 4x4 fence post to a concrete house wall. Sometimes there is a need to fix an actual 4 x 4 fence post to a concrete wall such as a house, garage or garden wall. I show you how to securely fix the fence or gate post to the wall. This method ensures an absolutely solid base on which fence rails can be secured or as in this case, a full sized fence gate can be hung from.
In this example I show a common problem when trying to fix a fence post to a wall. There is almost always a small drip lip on the side of house or garage walls and this prevents the post being able to sit flat against the wall. I show how to overcome this without the need for unsightly shims. Using my method, you can actually cement the post in as normal and actuallt have it sit flush against the wall. This is the ideal situation to get a super strong fixing point to the wall - ideal to hang a really heavy gate from.
Fixing wooden posts to concrete walls can seem fairly daunting, but with the right tools and the right fixings, the job is actually very simple. There are many situations where this may be required, it is not unique to fencing or hanging gates. The methods shown can be used for fixing any timber to masonry concrete structures or walls. The Timco Multi fix concrete screws provide a very strong fixing which will cope with many heavy duty applications.

Hi can you buy Timco multi-fix individually as I only need 4 but can’t afford a box as I won’t use them, any ideas please
@@Blue60 Yes, I think you can buy them in singles from Amazon.
Looks great finished, nice work !
Thanks!
Excellent video, thanks👍
No problem 👍 Thanks for the comment !
Cracking video - thanks very much! I could watch content like this all day, but of course, I'd never get anything done :). Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment 😎👍
Thanks for that, a straight forward job explained easily. I’m not a DIY man from start to finish this took me 30 minutes 👍🏻 subscribed by the way 👍🏻
Cheers ! 👌
@@Bacrenfencing nice job! What is the size of drill bit and size of the screw? How long should the screw onto the concrete?
Awesome job
Thank you! Cheers!

@@Bacrenfencing Before moving here I lived in Newtonhill. Small world!
Very informative and helpful as my first fence and gate build is coming up.
Glad it was helpful Alan, thanks for the comment !
@@Bacrenfencing Im planning a closed-boarded fence with a 25mm overlap. Is it best to ensure that the nail only goes through a single board I.e. just past the overlap, rather than nailing both boards on the edge?
Hi Alan, If you are using feather edge boards, then yes, only nail one single board. Feather edge boards are flimsy and if you nail through both boards, then there is a good chance that the boards will split over time due to expansion and contraction. Hope this helps.
@@Bacrenfencing Thanks. I had been considering a 'hit and miss' fence, but they look like giant pallets to me lol.
Yes, but at least they let some wind through, close board are good for non exposed areas. Good luck with the install
Excellent video mate, currently looking for inspiration on bolts as I’ve got a job 3ft panels on top of a brick/rendered wall. going with 6ft 4” posts bolted to as the previous fence has repair spurs everywhere and that has failed, to many bolt choices out there 😂
Thanks for the comment, yes these bolts are great for the job !
Quick question good video why didn't you use a scribe question mark
Difficult to scribe a 4x4 fence post, quicker to just notch it and cover it with a scribed fence slat.
Great explanation thanks. Just wondering what you would do if you were unlucky and drilled through the mortar???
Thanks Danny, that does happen now and again and to get round that, I generally then go in with a 10mm bolt and just tighten it very slightly, that tends to work but obviously not as strong a fixing as going in to the block work. The other option is to just drill another hole a couple of inches up from the old hole and then fill the old hole / recess. Thanks for the comment 👍
@@Bacrenfencingalright pal I'm doing something like this, the posts I'm using for the fence are 4x4 but could I use a 75x75 on the wall to hang a gate? and get my line from the side the gate will be hanged?
@@Mr8ofspades Yes, you could do that
@@Bacrenfencing cheers pal
Love your videos Barry .
What the best brand ...Makita combi or DeWalt combi
I want it lightweight but powerful
Thanks Steven, Personally I use Dewalt as that is the main battery platform I'm on, but I would not put you off Makita as they are great tools too (I have some Makita tools). I have a couple of the Dewalt combi and SDS drills, here is the combi I use - amzn.to/3N23bTA I have had my oldest one for nearly 9 years and it is still going strong, so would highly recommend it. I can't really comment on the Makita combi as I have never owned one. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment 👍
Great job big chap ....have you tried the lumberjack wood glue from toolstation ?
Cheers Ian, no I have not tried that, I tend to use Everbuild D4 glue. Is the lumberjack stuff any good ?
@@Bacrenfencing it's absolutely amazing there a 5 minute work time and a 30 mins one ......just use a wee brush with some water and wet one surface then clamp glue or nail it's super strong the wood breaks before the glue gives and ffs wear gloves lol
Cheers Ian, I will have to check that out mate - and yes, I will get the gloves looked out !
@@Bacrenfencing if you put a blod down say the size of a pea it will expand to the size of a small grape .....its been a total game changer for me
@@iandrain.7277 I will get some !
Hi ...Thanks for the video. Would these bolts do as a substitute: RAWLPLUG LX CONCRETE SCREWBOLTS X 150MM 10 PACK
I believe so
Thanks for the reply. :)
I have a rendered wall over breeze block… so screwing through render into the block… will your method work for this? Thanks
Yes, it will work in your situation. Thanks for the comment.
Hi, I am adding a railing to my small front stoop. I have 4x4 posts and I want to attach one of them to the house. The house wall is brick but it is EXTREMELY uneven. I don't know what to call that type of brick but they are full of bumps and when I place anything straight and flat against that wall, I see spaces as big as 1/2" - or even more. Do I need some kind of shims to put between the 4x4 and the house wall? If so, how do I attach those shims behind the post. I don't want concrete/masonry screws to show behind the post and I don't know what to do. Please help. I would really appreciate it. I have seen quite a few videos on RUclips but I haven't seen a case where the bricks are so uneven. I would appreciate your advice. Kind regards.
Just attach the post like I did in this video and then use fence slats scribed to the wall to cover the gaps between the post and the wall. No need to shim if you have a couple of good points of contact.
@@Bacrenfencing Thank you so much. But please tell me: what do I need to I scribe fence slats. I don't have a lot of tools. Once it is done, how do I attach them to the wall? Please forgive all these questions. I am a senior and try to learn from RUclips. Do you have a drawing or a video I could see?
can you use this on a brand new roughcasted house which has 90 mm insulation board.
Not advisable
Would it make a difference if I were affixing a mounting board to an exterior stucco wall at a spot where I am certain to hit the interior stud? Should I use a smaller bit/screw? Shorter? Should there be some sort of silicone or flashing between the stucco and wood?
I'm not sure as I only use this method on brick or concrete walls. I have never tried this on Stucco, so not sure to be honest.
Did you end up attaching the mounting post to the stucco wall? Did you do it just like the video?
@@PEDRODIY2 TBH it was so hot over the summer, I put it off to this very week. I'll be out there tomorrow.
@@mavirek Do you know how wide stucco usually is? like 1-2 inches or so?
@@PEDRODIY2 TBH I’m so unsure of what I am doing. 🙁 I’m having a hard time believing that two lag bolts into a mounting board then thru stucco and into a stud will hold.
Good stuff mate and very useful information for those who don’t normally do this sort of work ( meaning myself)
You are the fence guy in the north east of Scotland 👍🔨😄📐
😂 Cheers Gary, you're too modest, I've seen your gate installs...........different class mate ! Hope all is good with you - did you get the fence at your place sorted out ? Good to hear from you 👍😎
Did you go through a stud on the other side?
No, straight into a brick wall.
You didn't do anything to prevent moisture from getting into the wall where you drilled. You should shoot some caulk of sealant in the hole you drilled before putting the fastner i
It's a cavity wall, like most walls here in the UK, so no need. Also, the fixings did not go through the first course of brick, so no moisture would get in anyway. Thanks for the comment
