CREED III Review

- Since the Rocky franchise is my favorite film series, you know I had to do a review on the latest Creed sequel. Michael B. Jordan is back as the titular Adonis Creed, but this time without the help of Sylvester Stallone's iconic Rocky Balboa. So without the character that started it all, is Creed 3 able to stand on its own?

If the reconciliation scene hit you, please go and watch the deleted locker room scene from Creed 2. I think it's criminal to have cut it from the movie, it's such a powerful scene! So much is said with so few words.
For a guy, James, who has been said to love watching behind the scenes footage and deleted scenes and DVDs. I’m surprised you didn’t notice that. Lol
No
That's probably why a similar scene was included in Part 3.
That was my favorite part in the movie. It was a crime cutting that scene
Both scenes are great with dame it's more personal since he actually knows him from childhood
That final fight crowd disappearing was where I felt MBJ's anime influence really came in, to make the two fighters the focus, zoning out any distractions from an audience and fighters point of view. I thought it was cool, but I don't think it'd work over and over for future movies.
i want to see more of the fighter vision, in which we see close ups on their face as everything sort of distorts..as he sees a pattern or weakness..
We got that picture perfect Bandai Namco Games shot from that, I was hyped on my seat!
Everyone says MBJ's anime influence came from Naruto & DBZ but in actuality it comes from Ashita no Joe/Tomorrow's Joe (1968/1970).
Which influenced DBZ, Naruto, & a lot of beloved anime/manga.
I think, without seeing the movie (yet), that I'm in agreement with you. The crowd phasing out moment should only really come back in moments where the dynamic of the boxers should be the focus, like it is here. These two people have big issue with each other, to the point where nothing else matters. If that comes back, it has to feel earned, or it will cheapen that moment. Not to say it can't be done, but it must be done well.
I hated the ending fight because of that nonsens.
There's a moment on the movie that it was almost necessary to have some presence from Rocky. I knew Rocky would not show up, but I was expecting something like Adonis talking on the phone with him. Nothing too profound, just casually thanking rocky for calling on that moment.
The Creed 3 movie is similar to Rocky 5. But as bad as Rocky 5 was, I thought it had a better plotline imo.
Adonis Ghosted Rocky.
@@MrGetwellsoon yea I agree that’s pretty much how I feel about it too
The funeral!
Creed 3 lacked heart while I liked it he overcame the challenge too easily.
I never quite understood the issue with Rocky not being in Creed 3 regardless of his issues with Winckler. Shortly before Creed 2 came out, Stallone released a video indicating that Creed 2 would probably be his last appearance as Rocky. So I had been ready for this for more than 4 years.
Him not being in it was fine. It’s the fact that they never explain where he went lol
Stallone has said he'll never watch CREED III, which is a strange stance for a movie's producer to take...
key word: *probably* :)
@@lpquagmire3621 I get the feeling its one of those weird situations where they had to credit him based on some obscure Hollywood rule.
@@lpquagmire3621he was kicked out of production
I really appreciated this review. You cover all the main pros and cons that I felt similarly about. It's such a shame that Sly has had difficulties with Winckler. It goes waaay back, and I don't get why it hasn't been settled by now. The franchise is his baby! It just hurts that it's turned out this way for him. I hope something can be worked out, and that he can be involved in the future again.
I would love a series like that, a back story of Mickey!
me too, please
The reconciliation you're talking about James. There was a deleted scene from Creed 2 of Adonis and Viktor that we should have had that served that purpose! I hope you saw it! It's unfortunate it was not in the final cut!
A Micky prequel is a fantastic idea!
A photo from Rocky 3 is hanging in the back in Adonis's Gym. It's rocky wearing the title.....so he's became a photo in the back 🤷🏽♂️
There is a dialog between Creed and Drago at the end of Creed II but it is a deleted scene. Why they deleted it is beyond me...
Agreed. It's a fantastic scene. So much was said with so few words. It was like a final burying of the hatchet among Rocky, the Creed family and the Dragos.
That's Hollywood for you (well, today it's become hollyWOKE unfortunately)
How did it go?
I kind of got the impression either Rocky had passed away, or he was with his family given the way Creed 2 ended. Maybe a line addressing it could have worked.
One aspect of the Creed movies that is disappointing to me is the music. The Rocky score is iconic and is a huge part of the film series.
The new rap stuff is immediately dated and unappealing after the initial viewing.
When are we getting a movie about Gazzo the loan shark?
You think I don't hear things?
Creed movies are not Rocky movies. Never will be
That's the point, they're Creed movies
@@eliek2014 glad you agree. A lot of people don’t
What IS your point? Because it just sounds like hating.
Who keep on making these movies?
Creed 3 briefly addresses Apollo's other children. In the dialogue between Donnie and his mom, Donnie briefly mentions how they resented him.
I don't care if it IS a great film on it's own...without Balboa, it's a big Bal-NO-a...
Agreed
Take a wild guess
Having just finished your book, I immediately thought of you when i saw Adonis reach the Hollywood Sign! Thank you for making that.
Man I always love your genuine love for the art of production with movies, love to see people fulfill their lifelong passions.
For instance taking the care to put all the Rocky and Creed movies in the frame while explaining it.
Love it man, gg!
Honestly, I'm not in the mood to watch it without Rocky there.
your missing out its great movie , and remember it was stallone decision not to be in it. thats was on him. so see it and enjoy
@@sixfoursoul2538 it was his decision because he did not like the direction the story was going in.
It's quite average
@@Phantasiafan87 what did he not like?
@@Phantasiafan87 No, he has beef with Irwin Winkler in regards to the rights of the Rocky franchise
Now I'm waiting for a Rocky movie tier list
he did it already, but just until creed 1
Rocky
Rocky III
Rocky IV
Rocky II
Rocky V
Creed
Creed II
Creed III
Totally felt the same James, I felt in Creed 3, is as if like rocky was just swept to the side entirely due to any struggle or payment disputes, I really hope that more gets spent wisely if theres to be more sequels.
if they make the next one about Creed's daughter as the focus, i'm tapping out.
That was also my question during the movie. Wouldn't Rocky be watching the fight ringside?
They should have showed him at his house watching the fight at the very least
A prequel of rocky about Micky would be amazing id have Sylvester Stallone play Rocky's Dad or grandpa
I loved the cage/mattress part. The Mattress part hit me like a truck
@5:27 they actually do exactly this. Rogan talks about it with other fighters on his podcast. They rarely go into a fight @ 100%, as there is usually some underlying injury received during training/sparring
It would be fun if you reviewed the few creed games that are out. I got one on the switch last year. As for creed 3...it's awesome! It's like rocky 1 through 5 combined with the different elements taken from them. Jonathan majors was amazing as diamond d
I assume its just a boxing game
Jonathan Majors is scary badass on this film, he's acting is spot-on and I can see him on many roles.
yea they blew the rocky part.... it was bs
Lol Mickey got those scars from the 1966 Batman 🦇 🗯pow 🥊😂😂😂😂😂😂👍
6:40 It was directed like an anime
He knew how dangerous dame was so he has to have borderline real fights while training to be able to handle the unorthodox fighting of Dame 5:35
No Stallone? I REFUSE TO WATCH CREED III !!!!1
James is at his best when talking from the heart about films and cinema.
It's the real James.
I liked these movies better when they are called Rocky (insert roman numeral here).
It seems like creed still has roman numerals so far. If there’s a fourth one, we’ll see if there is an IV.
The creed series really is pretty bad. I want to like it but i cant.
In my opinion, this is the worst movie in the Rocky series. Even Rocky 5 was better than this.
I agree this is definitely my least favorite since Rocky 5
In Rocky 2, Rocky visited Apollo in the hospital. That was a bit of a reconciliation.
Apollo's other two children were finally referenced in this film.
Are we ever gonna find out (canonically) what became of Clubber Lang?
Viktor helping Adonis train was such a dream come true. Lol The 2 becoming friends was the right way to go considering that both were decent people. Especially Viktor.
Off topic
RIP to Mr. Big
Bert I Gordon (1922-2023)
Eyyy Yooo this aint no pie eatin’ contest
thanks, Matei
Load was huge
He should have mentioned how there was no music in this, the rocky films were famous for their music during the montages and they decide to just get rid of that altogether??
Check out Creed 2 Deleted scenes specifically in the locker room scene with Victor it’s incredible and it really demonstrates the reconciliation that you speak of
Rocky was enforcer/thumb-breaker in Rocky 1. He wasn't a "bad guy" but he was definitely a flawed character.
This feels less a passing of a torch and more a snatching of an ice cream
I really enjoyed this episode! You really described everything so well about the Rocky franchise. Rocky has and will always be my favorite movies and I'm so glad I grew up with them. I agree with you and stallone that the franchise has got to real and dark. I hope they go more with optimistic movies after this one. Rocky balboa had the biggest heart as a fighter and that made him the most dangerous. That's why I'll always like Rocky the most.....kindred soul. Many blessings to you and your channel cinemascre.
Hey James I noticed a glimpse of a Rocky 3 poster in the gym that Adonis puts Damian in.
Only one scene is where Stallone Rocky should be in and definitely should be there and weird he isn't
Won’t be seeing Creed 3 after the treatment of Sylvester Stallone by the studio.
Same
Didnt Creed 2 explain what Rocky was doing? He went to be a father and grandfather but i agree, they couldve show Rocky watching the fight. I LOVED ALL MOVIES!!!!
He was just visiting
Getting busted up in training can happen. happened to me a few times before too
jonathan majors is my new fav actor. great in everything. hes made me laugh and cry.. cant wait to see more from him.
have you found a new one yet?
Rocky 3 was my least favorite, but I want somehow Clubber Lang to come back in the story some how...and Tommy the Machine Gun from 5
Tbh that was my favorite haah
The actor who played Tommy passed away in 2013.
есть кино без негров?
Review while he's sick 😢
Rumor has it in Creed 4 he’s going to have to fight Thunderlips’ nephew after arm wrestling Bull Hurleys grandson.
I’m not sure how to feel about Rocky not being there. I do feel it’s better that they didn’t just make up something to cover for him while in reality they were uncertain what to do with the creature. But…that space where he should be is very obvious.
Great movie though and great review. I love it when you review something you know and love.
We were all in agreement if they killed off rocky we were gonna walk out
8-1 I'd say. I dont need to bag on Rocky 5 more than anyone else, but it didn't do well and has the place of "movie so bad, it motivated a franchise revival" for a reason
Why is Creed in retirement?
Didn't he just like start out?
I'd love to see a villain battle royal! All the villains against eachother, single elimination style. Oh yea. Ivan drago vs clubber lang. Ivan would probably destroy hime but hey, I'm not a writer, maybe they can make it interesting.
Why there's no score
felt like a rehash of rocky 5 with weaker characters
A thunderlips spin off 🤔
Solid movie, anime influences on MBJ are pretty obvious, but this is a solid debut for him as a director, great performance by Mayors, too.
The problem is how for money issues Rocky got pretty much erased from existence, I understand Sly not been in the movie, but they cant just pretend the character never existed.
Boxers really do spar hard and get injured. I think a few rounds fighting full out in sparring isn’t abnormal.
Fights have been pushed back over injuries in sparring. Famously, the Rumble in the Jungle (Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman) was pushed back because Foreman’s face got cut up in sparring and had to fully heal.
Unfortunately we would never see a Tommy gun story line unless they hired somebody to play Tommy.
A Mickey prequel would be perfect tho
I hated the part in the final fight where the arena went empty. That made no sense at all
The choreography was most superb!
It would be nice to get a Neil Breen movie marathon review.
Before I watch this, I just want to put in my 2 cents. I thought it was another fantastic Creed movie. Aside from 1 thing. The Ending. It really took me out of it, without spoiling anything, see it for yourself. You'll know exactly what I mean by that.
6:24. Thank you.
You should do Avgn video on Iron Man 2 on the wii
I saw Creed and Creed II and they were decent for Rocky spinoffs, but I skipped Creed III when I heard Stallone isn't in it.
Can't wait for your review on the new Super Mario movie.
Rocky can never die. No. I don’t need to see that.
i just want creed 4 with stallone and a send off and end series. i wouldnt mind a prequel micky show/film though
Don't expect Tommy to come back anytime soon. Considering the actors end it'd be best not to bring that up.
I would like a book or graphic novel based on mickey more than a movie or series just because I don’t want to see anyone else play him other than burgess meredith.
Lets go, champ!!
I still don't know about Creedverse . As much as I love the series I just want them to end a series on a high note
I liked creed 3
There was a few dragon ball z reffrences in the fights which was sick 🔥
Agree
I couldn't agree more James! Love your videos! I would love to buy your book and have an autograph of yours! Is that possible?
Well, the end training isn't the only flawed part of the boxing aspect of this movie. The whole setup for the end of the movie would NEVER happen in the real world no matter how much money is involved in the business BUT this is a movie world so anything is possible.
As a movie Creed 3 is decent one but as a boxing movie? Nah
I don't think they should make a Creed 4 all needs to be said in Creed 3
the SPARRING in a BOXING film took you out of a BOXING film? Okay Bimmy
nope
The full title of the movie should have been called Creed 3: Adonis Ghosts Rocky. This isn't a Rocky film. I won't watch it. I am a Rocky purist. It isn't a passing of the torch. It turned into something else. I have no interest in seeing this.
Maybe the gun thing was inspired by Sonnie Liston
@JamesNintendoNerd Could you please do a review on Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)? Thanks….
I hope James talks about his thoughts on the trailer to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem considering he’s a big fan and I would love to see what his thoughts are on the turtles being voiced by actual teenagers.
As much as I love the TMNT and the artstyle being used, I am not a fan of Seth Rogen or how he goes about creating stuff, so I will not be supporting this version of the Shelled Ninjas.
@@an3582 he’s just a producer on it, and idk if this is a controversial opinion or not, but he’s honestly a better producer than actor, especially when you consider he produces both The Boys and Invincible
@@therock238360 He’s not just a producer he’s also voicing Bebop.
Sequel series for the robot.
These movies are okay but they don't hold a candle to the Rocky films.
Creed’s daughter will takeover.
Avgn please make video about a horror:" clock tower" everyone is telling that this is the best horror SNES game
Killmonger Vs. Kang The Conqueror
No one will ever fight for a title on their debut😂😂😂 did the writers even follow boxing😂
I think that Rocky himself, might have died.
