    One thing that came to mind is how the watch looks when being worn as an everyday smart watch. There will likely be many photos and videos of diving, doing sports etc. but as a lifestyle watch people will want to see how it looks in casual clothing or even dresses too instead of just a close up on the wrist.

      Thanks Giuseppe - much appreciated. Apnea Hunt is similar to the Apnea dive mode with its high refresh data screens, but tuned specifically for spearfishers. Agree on both your points - the blie is my fav out of the 3 options, but it does annoy me slightly that they didn't go with AI. Why forfeit one of the key attributes of a DC?
      My hunch - they are using the MK2S as a test bed to see if people do want a small unit version, and if popular they will roll out a version with AI when / if the MK3 lands. That's going to be years away though I's imagine...

      Sorry for the slow reply on this - been a hectic couple of weeks! The MK2 is noticeably smaller than the MK2i without a show of a doubt, BUT compared to other DC's the Mk2 is very similar. @@HasanGez So the functionality and menu configurations are EXACTLY the same on both.
      If you prefer the smaller sized unit which is what I think you were heading towards then yes, the MK2S is perfect.
      If you want a DC that does air integration then you'll need to go for the MK2i.
      My own personal preference as a guy that is 6'4" (193cm) tall is the MK2i - I personally prefer the large screen and the fact it has AI.

      As far as I'm aware they don't market a stick on screen protector (not that I've seen), but honestly don't think you need it.

    Appreciate the review, as well as the in-depth info on the mk2 video. Currently using a Suunto D4i, thinking about picking this one up as I'm not a big fan of large watches. I'm a spearfisher and it'd be nice to have something that would allow me to navigate to specific reef features in the water, track my drifts, and save waypoints where I've caught fish, while also serving as my apnea computer. Do the GPS and navigation features work on the surface of the water? Only other concern is the battery life given the smaller size, wouldn't really mind charging it daily but I need it to last at least a full dive session which can be up to 6 hrs. I've been diving on various Suunto with AI and while I really want to switch over to the Garmin MK2, I think diving with the Sonar beeping would annoy me. There’s a lot packed into this little unit, but agree, would be good if there was a chance to squeeze in AI, although it depends at the cost of what is lost if there’s no room..!?
      I’ve had so many comments about the ‘beeping’ from the T1 pod.
      Some have found it remarkably annoying, some have found the ambient noises underwater masked it, and some (like me) never noticed it 🤷🏻‍♂️
      I didn’t hear it at all during the T1 Pod test, and it can’t be heard over the sound on the video from that review.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  3 года назад +2

      Hey! You know what, I wouldn;t bee too worried about battery life. There are some features that I have turned off like the 'Pulse Oximeter' as it drains the battery, but then it is measuring the oxygen in your blood - is that required for everyday life? - no, not really, but great to know it's there if required.
      Even using it as a smart watch every day, phone notifications, the odd walk on the beach, the odd cycle - general stuff in normal life etc, the battery life is still pretty good. I have the screen set to 30% brightness for normal use, and set to be brighter for water use and the battery is still allowing me 6-7 days of use before I need to charge. I am going to use it as everyday watch and also for a bunch of other activities like snowboarding - the bigger Mk2, well, is too big for that. Great review, thx! The one concern i have is the battery life. MK2 is huge --> has a huge battery and therefore provides the luxury, that you don't have to worry about left battery life in most of the usecases. May this be a problem for MK2s ? I mean, i just would like not to wry about battery life while i go diving and swimming to my spots i've saved in the watch... In that case i would use GPS when i'm on the surface and would use apnea mode at the spots. Could this combination eat more battery than given in the specs ? Any thoughts, experiences ?

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  2 года назад +1

      Hi there - and thanks for the useful question. I'm sure others have thought the same. Yes - using any of the additional features uses the battery life more, but in all honestly the GPS isn't a huge eater of power in my experience. If I use the Mk2S just as a smart watch and turn off the blood oximenter I'll get a good 7 days of use between charges. Start to throw in activities and that will reduce, but you'll comfortable get 2/3 days of multiple dives before you need to charge depending on the screen brightness levels during activity. And when I say multiple dives I'm talking 3/4 a day, at circa 1 hour for each dive. The great thing about the Descent range is lets say for example to want to wear the watch over a wetsuit - therefore as the watch can't measure heart rate through the neoprene, you can turn the heart rate monitor off - this dramatically increases battery life...! I wouldn't be put off at all, and it still performs better than other DC's that double as a smart watch like the Suunto D5.

    Hi, I’m wondering, for computers with rechargeable li-ion batteries, what happens when the battery runs out of charging cycles, can you service/change it? Similar to what you can do with a smartphone battery

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  3 года назад +2

      That’s a really great question, and something I have discussed before actually, so happy to give you an answer.
      Most units that have rechargeable built in batteries usually allow for c500-700 charging cycles before the battery starts to deteriorate. Therefore you could get a few more full charge cycle out of it before you notice a significant difference.
      Let’s say we’re talking about these models in this video - if you were charging it on average once a week (when not diving and just using it as a smart watch I get 14 days of use from my Mk2i), you might charge it less than once a week, or more if on a dive trip for example.
      But even at once a week, 700 charge cycles is 14 years at once a week.
      Chances are that in all honesty you’d be upgrading to a new current model after 14 years instead of having the battery replaced!!
      I know we get attached to things, but I’d definitely be looking for a new dive computer before the battery died on me…
      Hope that helps? 👍🏼

    so here is a quick word from a 41 yo female diver, since you mention your audience is mostly male. I would call this watch a deplorable attempt at a hybrid dive computer-smart watch because of its battery life of 7 days. it is not a good smart watch as it has less battery life than the fenix 6s (which is what the mk2s is drafted after) and the mk1. it is a lasting dive computer, because I can use it for quite a bit in dive mode, but not a competitive dive computer as others out there cost less and have air integration (suunto). overall, it is a weak product, because as soon as you start doing activities after diving, that 7 days battery life pretty much will mean charging it every 2-3 days. I get the watch is small, so it can't pull the 16 days battery life of the mk2, but it should at least come close; I mean at least 10 days. come on. the problem is, this watch is released beside the mk2 and the mk2i, which are absolutely fantastic watches/dive computers. and, as a woman, I feel I am being told it is ok to sacrifice quality for looks. I absolutely will not buy this watch which should not have made it passed the drawing board and the engineering team. I would rather get the better mk2/mk2i for diving and wait until Garmin comes up with a more functional and less underwhelming watch/dive computer "for small wrists".

      Hi Christina, and thank you for not only a decent long and thought through comment, but for also flying the flag for all the ladies out there and being part of my 10% female population!
      I hear everything you are saying loud and clear, and to an extent, agree. I'm keen to use the MK2S properly now we've synced it to see what the battery is really like. In my experience they play done the official figures.
      For the MK2 they said 12 days of battery using while connected with smartphone - I get 14 days+, and that's with the odd activity. I also have my screen brightness on 50% instead of the default 30%. They said up to 5m of range using the T1 transmitter - I was getting 8m and more of range...
      Completely hear what you mean about Suunto. The D6i we have would go for months and months as a watch - but that was all it was really, a watch that you could take diving. No colour screen, no activity based watch (which incidentally, I find it weird that Suunto haven't made an all round fitness watch that you can take diving that does multi sports. They have so many watches for so many sports, but not one that does them all..?)
      Talking about Suunto and the rechargeable D5 - you couldn't do 3 dives with it before the battery needed charging. As a watch only it needed charging every other day, and never reached the numbers stated for battery life, although I'm unsure if software updates have now rectified this?
      Agree that it's a shame the MK2S doesn't have AI, and do appreciate that it's pricey in terms of competition at £950, although there isn't really anything on the market that comes close in terms of functionality and capability.
      7 days battery as a watch could be seen as not good enough.
      7 days battery as a watch that constantly measures heart rate, tracks your sleep, calories burned, steps, pulse oximeter, allows you the check time of tides (which I use all the time on the Mk2 since we moved to the south coast), plays music when I'm out on the bike, and allows me to use the bike activity features... What was I saying? Ah yes, 7 days battery life to do all that isn't so bad.
      It's a great starting point for modelling for any Mk3 - the Mk1 was a great stab at a first go for a dive computer. They realised what flaws it had and rectified them for the Mk2. I have a feeling they will do the same again...
      I promise you, I will be 100% bluntly honest about the battery life on the MK2S - there will definitely be a video to follow this one up...
      And once again - thank you. It's great to have some constructive comments for debate.

      Fingers crossed you get more battery life than advertised. I’ve had the MK1 for the last 3.5 years and when they said 10 days as a smart watch, well, that’s what I got. Maybe 11. With treadmill and 3-5 days per week 30 min to 1.5 hours workouts, I’d almost hit 9 days. However, on vacation diving 2-3 times per day, and no other activities but eating and drinking, I had to charge it every 3 - 4 days. I’m really curious what you get with the MK2s. I kinda doubt it will do very well on diving + running/gym (some people, not me, go to the gym on vacation).

      @@cticu you're so correct - I also find the brightness of the screen makes a huge difference, as does turning off some of the features. All well and good, but it absolutely drains the battery by literally 50%!

      I understand your statement, but I really disagree when you said that they sacrificed quality for looks. In my opinion, the lower battery results only happened because they didn’t reduce any feature!! The MK2S has all the same features of the MK2 (and I wasn’t expecting this). The only difference, besides color, It’s size! And since they didn’t reduce features It costs the battery capacity.
      This version really impressed me! For the price and everything!
      By the name MK2S I was expecting something like what happened with the Xbox Series S. That was a real downgrade for reducing size and pice. And it’s not the case here.
