    I have a MKII I bought it directly after your review. I am planning on taking the TDI advanced nitrox and deco procedures with it later this year. As far as a regular dive computer, I have used it on both day and night dives and I really like it. On night dives I did have to push the light up button to read the screen, but it stayed on long enough and was plenty bright enough for me to read it without issues. Some of the data can show kind of small, but if you can read the pedometer, temperature or heart rate monitor on the screen out of the water, then nothing will be an issue in the water (things magnify in water). Downloading data to your phone happens automatically if you're near it, so it isn't like an extra task.
    The out of water features are pretty great if you don't already own a fitness/smart watch. I use it to track bicycle riding, weight lifting walking, etc... It can track your sleep, but I only tried it out for a couple weeks, noticed my sleep pattern is pretty consistent and that sleep tracking is mostly a novelty and quit wearing it to bed. You can also use it to track calories burned swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and since you can create activities and it bases your calories on what you tell it your height, weight and age are compared with your heart rate you could probably track any activity. ANY activity

    James Thank you for the information. I am still a rec diver and bought the Shearwater Peregrine for now; however, I might stay in the Shearwater as I do not have 20/20 vision. I do like the tip for the 6m safety stop due to the boats and I will use that in the future. Thanks again for the wealth of knowledge that you are imparting on the Scuba World. Be Safe

      Hi Dave,
      I use the Garmin MK2i, and I have definitely no 20/20, but I have corrected multifocal glasses and I can read my Garmin without any problem. The display, in my humble opinion, is suprisably big and good to read. I wouldn't replace it as I also use it for golf and bicycling too.

    This is all great information!
    I bought an i200c for my OW, and put about 60 dives on it before I bought the Mk2 with the intention of taking Tec classes this fall. I absolutely love my Mk2. As a runner, as a surfer, as a hiker, as a smart watch, as a health tracker, and yes, as a diver.
    I really appreciate hearing a review of the Mk2 from a Tec diving perspective. Every Tec diver I’ve spoken to is singing praises to shearwater 6 ways from Sunday, and all the Garmin users I talk to aren’t Tec divers. This video, therefore, is incredibly insightful. Thank you for getting around to it, and glad to hear your ear is doing better!

      @@Larutus I agree. My long term plan is to eventually get a Perdix and retire my Garmin to a back up (As of now my Garmin is primary and my i200c is backup).
      By the time I get to that point, though, I will likely be well into Tec diving to the extent that I can have little niche complaints about my dive computer than a Shearwater will remedy. So far, far into the future.

    I am loving my Mk2i although I am only an rec diver. I love the that my daily wear is also my diving watch. It stays on my wrist 24/7 unless it is charging. With normal wear I can go almost 2 weeks between charges. If I an running, biking or diving more often it may be a week between. But the battery life is awesome. My only complaint is the black finish not being super durable which i would expect for a sports watch that cost $2400 AUD.

    I have the Garmin MK2 and love it. My wife has the Teric and she loves hers. Personally, I like the extra features for running and skiing and I find the screen very easy to see at all depths and in bright sunlight, yes the Teric is brighter as it uses OLED but it also kills the battery. My wife charged her Teric every other night during our 2 week diving trip (3 dives a day), I charged my MK2 once and I probably could have got away with it as was still on 30%. That said, despite the terrible menu system of the Teric, it is a lovely bit of kit as is the Garmin and either for me are great tech diving computers (always were similar on deco time and TTS and funnily enough, our backups Suunto Eon Core on aggressive algorithm setting was also very similar to the Teric/Garmin). Safe diving all :)

    I bought the mk2i as my first dive computer. I did a lot of research and I'm still learning new things it can do. To start with, I have sleep apnea, and tracking my sleep helps me to understand what's going on when I'm not sleeping well. As I review my dives, having heart rate information helps me to equate those how I feel in the water to what is going on with my SAC rate at the same time. Having good information at your fingertips helps you to make decisions to improve your dives on the fly. There are a few settings that really help with reading underwater 1. Backlight -> Brightness, you can adjust brightness while underwater. I think it defaults to 50% 2. Menu -> Scroll down into settings -> Activities Apps -> Single Gas -> Single Gas Settings -> Big Numbers. Much easier to read. Some of my additional favorite features 1. GPS location saving and it shows in the dive log. I save my favorite sharks teeth locations at the surface for where I want to try next. 2. phone integration- acknowledge MFA and get text notifications

    Thank you James, for another great Video. You reinforced me keeping my Teric/Perdix combo. I was very much on the fence about selling my Teric, then I remember I would need a new transmitter or and additional. Lets see, SPG, Teric/Perdix Transmitter, Garmin Transmitter, yeah do not need it. I like AI, I believe in AI, yes even in Tech. I will say this.... I bought my Teric Day 1, and picked up my Perdix about 9 months ago. I find my Eyes turning to the Perdix 90% of the time. The bigger screen is just font size easier to read.

  • @graemefraser3553
    @graemefraser3553 11 месяцев назад

    As a middle aged Tech Diver with the usual crappy eyesight, I held off on buying a Descent MK2 as a backup to my Perdix specifically because screen wasn’t clear enough. However, I heard that Garmin brought out a feature called “big numbers” in a recent firmware update. I tried this out on a mates Descent and bam, problem solved. With big numbers on, brightness set to 50% instead of 20%, and brightness set to “always on” during the dive, it’s problem solved! I can now easily read everything on the screen.
    For me this was a huge issue so really glad the bods at Garmin have done some about it.
    With regards to everything else, I love the Descent. One thing I also notice in addition to everything else discussed, is how comfy it feels on your wrist compared to a lot of the other watch style dive computers out there.

    You had mentioned the pinging of the sonar. Can you use a hose the length of a regular gauge hose and clip it at your hip just behind you or on a tank strap? Maybe this will get it more out of audible range? Also, of all the features yu speak of in both videos, does it have GPS? Will it et you back to the boat? Can you set waypoints for things you have found under water and want to return to at a later date? I have been binging your videos and have enjoyed them. I'm a bit nerdy when it comes to taking in information and you are very informative. I'm not yet certified in any diving, just building up a knowledge base on equipment, safety, and other considerations while we get it together to find the right instructor in the DFW area.

  • @zerovisdiver
    @zerovisdiver 2 года назад

    Teric's screen is really impressive underwater but on the boat I cannot see anything. When my Mk2i was new I also do not know about the "Always On" backlight setting and thought it sucks, but now I just do 20% backlight all the time while diving and never had any issues with it. I might get a Perdix AI in the future, but I don't regret my MK2i as I run at least 4x a week and ride my mountain bike a lot. The reason why I might get a Perdix is due to the transmitter price of the Garmin. If I will buy two transmitters for sidemount then it makes more sense to add a bit more money and buy 2 Swift + Perdix AI as we don't really know what the future holds for the Descent series (hopefully good though as I really like it).

For me, my old eyes need big bright numbers and that Garmin display is just too small. As you say I'd save the money and go Shearwater, or rather I'd save double the money and go Shearwater. You are of course going to need two!

    I run two teric for my primary and secondary. My dive computers are just that dive computers. I don't need all the ridiculous bells and whistles. Plus display clarity is extremely important when diving because water conditions can change at any time. The teric is by far the best dive computer available. As for battery life, I do 3 days of diving on my teric and it's fine. Although it's easy enough to just charge at night.

    Hi James, first of all greetings from Zurich. I hope you enjoyed your visit to our city. You mentioned in your video that the last stop is fixed to 3 meters. In my opinion you can set the dive setting of the Mk2i the last deco stop to 3m, 4.5m or 6m. I am not a technical diver (at least not yet) but I found this point in the menu. Am I wrong?

  • @MarkN67
    @MarkN67 3 года назад +1

    I sold my Teric to buy the MK2i. I find it much better. But agree with the frustration on the TTS and lack of being able to set the last stop to 6m. We have similar issues in the UK, where its easier to hold a 6m stop in choppy water. It also means that you're getting the full benefit of using O2 for your last stop as the PPO2 is 1.6 rather than 1.3.

    • @izhilin
      @izhilin 2 года назад

      What is the benefit here?
      To off-gas you need to lower PPN2 and PPHe which are already zero. But PPO2 = 1.3 is safer (when you off-gased enought to ascent to 3m).

    • @MarkN67
      @MarkN67 2 года назад

      @@izhilin in rough water, especially around the Uk you can be in a 1-2m swell, holding a 3m stop can be tricky and very uncomfortable at times. The last thing I want to do is feel seasick during my deco stop. Also having a higher PPO2 is also better for you as it pushes out the nitrogen a lot better. That’s why, if you’re ever in a chamber they will give you oxygen at a PPO2 of at least 2.0.

    Hi James, love your channel! I have been an avid fan of Shearwater ever since they came out with the Terric and I own several Shearwater models: Terric, Pretrel, NERD, etc; however, I am thinking of switching to this Garmin. I am resisting, but I have had so many problems out of my Terric and NERD that it has me wondering how much longer I can remain "brand loyal" and ignore the competition. So, I guess the real question is how durable the Garmin is? For me, (1) It must be tough enough to withstand daily abuse. I'm talking about farm, home mechanic, DIY mad scientists type abuse. (2) Good battery life. If I leave the screen off on my Terric and only look at it when needed I can get three maybe four days on the highest brightness under Predator Green. (3) Must be highly customizable in regards to moving things around to the home screen, having options that are handy for instructors-time, timers, etc. (4) Must provide tissue loading info/screens. For many many years I dove with a little puck computer that tracked your tissue loading and I got VERY used to looking at that info..lol. (5) Must be capable of user level maintenance such as battery replacement in the transmitter, etc. (6) The compass must work reliably without needing to calibrate all the time. What's your thoughts on durability, ease of use, cost point as compared to Terric, etc? I'm about to jump over and watch your in-depth review on the Garmin in a sec, so maybe your video will answer some of these questions. BTW, how's your ear doing?

    Do you know if you can add your sac rate to the Mk2 manually since it does not do air integration?

    James, Assume you've seen the new Mk3 and Mk3i. Do you have any thoughts on which features will trickle down to G1, Mk2, Mk2s, Mk2i, and Mk1 via update? One would think that Mk2i with T1 can handle some, if not all, of the improved diver-to-diver communication features. All the Mk-series watches ought to have access to the dive site database, as they handle mapping in the surface context quite well. All of the watches, including G1, ought to be able to provide a dive ready score since they have optical heart rate monitors and provide training scores for other activities. What do others think?

    Hi James, just a question. I’ve had two divers on separate occasions, go beyond NDL a little. One had an MK2s, and the other an MK2i. After doing their deco stops, upon reaching 5m, their Garmins no longer required them to do a safety stop. Does this happen to you too on deco dives?

    • @DiversReady
      @DiversReady  2 года назад

      For planned deco dives, once we've cleared deco stops, there isn't an additional safety stop. If you want additional stop time, just make your plan more conservative. For poorly executed recreational dives, the Garmin's won't know you weren't planning to do decompression, so they will give you a deco schedule as if you were doing an actual tec dive and no safety stop.
      Would highly recommend you educate those divers on the importance of adhering to their limits!

    Leaning toward the Garmin, only because I'm a runner, road and mountain cyclist, hiker, and thinking about skydiving more these days. Plus, as you stated, Garmin had amazing battery life. Their devices are one of a few which keep data with GPS for long treks or the occasional ultramarathon (2 down). My damned Forerunner 220 refuses to die after several years and miles of use.

    I was looking into a new dive computer as I’ll be passing my DM course and I’m wanting to venture into tech, would you say there’s a good ‘entry level’ tech computer out there? Or just go for a shearwater computer for tech?
    Also James, if possible could you do a video on why tech divers use DIN regulators and the differences between them and A Clamp? I know DIN has a higher working pressure and ‘less failure points’ due to them going into the first stage... but would love clarification or a more in-depth answer!

    Hi James and thank you for a nice review. I was never thinking about buying a watch size diving computer for technical diving. Maybe I am a bit conservative, but in deep dark environment (where I am mostly diving when doing tech dives) I don't want to spend time for searching the important information on the screen. They has to be visible immediately because my life could depend on them. That for I am using Shearwater's Perdix and Petrel 2.

I like the Perdix for the large screen and smaller profile and excellent compass. however, I also really like the MK2i and its every day uses it offers. I could just dive and not worry about changing my watch.

    Hi James, just a quick note, one of the first things that you mention is the lack of TTS on the standard display, not a big deal because you can get it through the menus, but then you say that you cannot set the last stop depth to 6m. You say that this is not a big deal because you just stay at 6m until it clears.
    Does this mean that you do not have the TTS? For me, this is a big deal if in Deco. We all know that with properGas planning, you plan a reserve etc, but if you come up to 6m and the tide, current is running where your not expecting it, then you are consuming more gas. This is a scenario where TTS and current SAC rate are very handy. You know how much time you have left in water, and you can see how much gas you have and are using. This allows you to signal the boat that you are likely to have a problem in a few minutes and perhaps even ask for a cylinder to be sent down. This scenario has never happened to me, and so..., but if it did I would be glad I had my Perdix primary.
    Good News! at the time of writing the Garmin has the ability to set the deepest stop to 6m and this, I presume is as the result of an update. The problem with the Descent Series, is that they appear to be catching up with the Shearwater and Suuntos of this world, they will get there, I am sure, but we will have to wait until they have sorted themselves out. I use a Descent and a Perdix AI. The Perdix is my primary, this may change in time, but not now.
    I hope that you found this useful feedback on your review, and one other thing about the Garmin please can they sort out the official videos where they talk about dive watches and oxygen tanks, this shows that the training element just does not know enough about diving, very disappointing.

    I use the Mk1 as backup for my Perdix AI, and I agree 100% on the TTS issue (not visible at all on Mk1) and the last stop at 6m. Not deal breakers, but annoying.
    I will not upgrade to the Mk2, even if I use my Mk1 as everyday watch, since is very good as activity watch (running, swimming). I just cannot see as replacing my Perdix

  • @gmancolo
    @gmancolo Год назад

    The Garmin Descent Mk2 does seem like a very slick watch, but the Perdix does seem more appealing for tech diving (there also seem to be complaints about chirping from Garmin's transmitter). As a smart watch, there seem to be better options, such as from Apple with its extensive app market (Garmin's is anemic). As a fitness watch, maybe the Fenix is better.

      @@pcsullog No, the MK2i will always give you a 3m stop on a deco dive. As a diver, you can stay at 6m and wait for the ceiling to open up. But it will always give you a 3m stop. With the Teric you have the option of your last stop being at 6m, which is far more beneficial when breathing O2 as the PPO2 is 1.6 and not 1.3. As a diver, I would rather be at 6m than at 3m when holding a stop in a swell as well. After spending 20mins on my last stop on Saturday in a F5-F6 I was glad to get out I can tell you 😂

    Garmin really dropped the ball, by not putting a Amold screen on those. I have one of their fitness watches and their dim screen drives me crazy. Such an easy thing to do, is to make the brightness adjustable for users. But, we all know they left it out, so they can claim battery life for days. I don’t need battery life to walk through Death Valley man, I just want a bright screen.
