- “We did a little preparation, on the phone and at home with tiny Rockman amps and earphones. Then we went in. The tapes rolled. My LA neighbour Alan Gratzer beat the Hell out of his kit with the fattest, heaviest drumsticks I had ever seen. Phil Chen, a friend I had met when he played with Rod Stewart, brought his unusual style of funk-orientated rock playing to the party, along with his sunny Caribbean energy and humour. And Fred Mandel, one of the classiest keyboard players I have ever met, tickled both the ivories and some very technical synth patches to bring the spacey riffs to life. Ed (I can still never call him “Eddie Van Halen” because he more than once told me he found it annoying!) played the guitar as if it were a piano … tapping and snapping, and sliding and skipping around the fingerboard like an electric sprite - always with a cheeky smile. If anything he did was difficult for him, he never showed it. A total original. Pure joy. What an everlasting privilege to play with him.” Brian May 🎸
A superlative show of back-to-basics passion and purpose, Star Fleet brims with the freedom of an off-the-cuff break from the day jobs for all involved.
The record emerged on October 20th, 1983 as a set of blistering guitar work, rock’n’roll spontaneity and vibrant melody, infused with palpable chemistry and respect between the players. Spawning a single in the title track, the mini-album reached No 1 in the British ‘Kerrang’ rock charts.
Now, of course, the record stands in part as a celebration of those we’ve lost: a chance to reconvene with great, much-missed talents. As Brian puts it, “It’s been very exciting to open up the vault to find these tapes where, in the blink of an eye, I’m trading licks with my friends, including the fantastic Ed Van Halen. It’s highly emotional, especially since Ed is sadly no longer around. We have since also lost Phil - so the rest of us cherish these fleeting moments together.”

Saw the BBC interview recently where Brian said he used to watch this with his son . I too used to love watching this on Saturday mornings back in the 80s as a young teen. Fantastic!
I can remember back in the early 90's reading about this Star Fleet project that Brian May did with Edward Van Halen. This is my very first time hearing this, and I must say that I'm blown away.

Way to go! I was 17 in ‘83 and this was one of my favorite EP’s! I liked Blues Breaker on the flip side, but the two of them together was insane!

@@josephno1347 great lineups and memories! My first concert was Rush A Farewell to The King in Detroit when I was 11. A brother had tickets and got stuck babysitting me so he took me instead of his girlfriend! Our parents grounded him and took away his Torino for awhile! 😂 The Summer of 1980 I saw Pablo Cruise, The Cars, The Doobie Brothers, Bob Seger and J Geils at different concerts and J Geils was incredible!

What? So this is technically a Queen/ Van Halen collab? I was never into puppet shows so I never heard of this back in the day.
@@cowpuddles4851 nope. This was when Queen took a break and Brian had a vacation in Los Angeles gathered up some musician buddies of his and released this EP. The other members of Queen and Van Halen are not involved here

Can't believe I've been an obsessive queen fan for 45 years and I've only just heard this song. I know it's Brian May and not Queen but it's really good.

The first music I ever loved as a child was TV theme songs, which just makes this already eargasmically good track even more satisfying to me. It brings back that childhood excitement of getting fired up by the opening titles of your favourite show, and then builds and builds on it with the most soul-pounding electric guitar jamming imaginable.

Is this high art? No. Will this ever be a routine entry in 'Top 100 Rock Songs' polls? Probably not.
Is this one of the greatest examples of creating awesome music for the sake of the music, and hanging out with your friends, and impressing the hell out of your kid because you can, because you're Brian F'ing May? Could be.

I saw this video around March '84, when It was aired in spanish tv, in the days of the premiere in Spain of the iconic videos "Radio Gaga" and Van Halens "Jump". I remember to have dreamed with the images and music of "Starfleet" in those days, being just a toddler :-)
Due that fascination, I love this clip so much. Its great to see it in a great quality. Million thanks for all, Bian!! 😀

My sons watched this cartoon show on Saturday mornings. Was actually vute. I sat at times & watched. Todays launch party for STARFLEET SESSIONS was so spectacular. Oh my God i was obsessed with this in high school. My buddy had it on cassette and I remember hearing it for the first time and being blown away. Great memories of walking through the halls at school blasting this on my Walkman! With all the talent on this record...i do however remember thinking "wtf is the guy from REO doing on this?" LOL, Anyway...i had completely forgot about Star Fleet session...so thanks for the reminder!

Me and all my friends were at primary school when this was on on Saturday mornings. Starfleet was always a staple of my Saturday morning as a kid 😊

It wasn't Brian May on the actual tv theme music. This was a cover, done for fun. Interesting fact, after recording was completed Brian learned from the composer there was another verse that they'd missed out.
The tv version and entire soundtrack was Paul Bliss from the band The Moody Blues.
Eddy saved the day with his Lazer sharp soloing. Star Fleet!

My dad got this whole set for me when I was 4 in 1989. I watched it religiously to the point it drove my dad crazy. He would say lamia save me lamia. Lol cuz it drove him nuts. I lost one of my vhs tapes years ago of an episode. But thank God for dvds. Cuz now I can show my own son these. It's crazy I never knew Eddie was the guitar playing as I have been huge fan since I was. Same with Brian. ❤

Great soundtrack. I watched this as a kid, and loved it. My best mate at the time said I hadn't watched it all, because I must have blinked while it was on. He only said that as he was taken on holiday by his family, so missed two episodes. I have the box set now, so I can catch up on all those blinked moments.

I am so glad I got this on it's original CD release. Love this tune. Ed and Brian were pure magic. Years later I bought 3 of the long out of print vinyl when I was in grad school, stunned to discover such a treasure trove at Amoeba Records collecting dust. Still have 1 in my possession. Nice to hear it playing it over the top of the show's visuals.
