- When editing video, it can be tough to mix music and vocals in a way that isn't distracting. Luckily, by simply "scooping the mids" in your equalizer, you can allow both tracks to play together nicely. It's a very quick and very easy trick that can really level up your videos.
Thanks to Ron @New Record Day for teaching me this technique!

- Who Am I? -
Hi! My name is Tom Buck. As a lifelong A/V nerd, I’m here to help you level up the audio and video quality of your streams, podcasts, puns, and videos. I was a high school Digital Media teacher for 11 years, and I started this channel in 2017 as a project to share my enthusiasm for digital media and teaching others while having fun along the way.
New videos are uploaded every Thursday morning, and more often when possible!

Congrats on the same day turnaround! You inspire me! 😘👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
But you inspired me and then I inspired you...so who inspired who?
I can add another piece of advice, or something to try, from a more audio mixing perspective. You can also sidechain the mid scoop with the dialogue, which in effect automates scooping those mids when they talk, but then "unscoops them" when the dialogue stops. This allows the music to sound full when they are not talking. There should be plenty of videos on sidechaining. Additionally compression will really help with mixing the two.
You did it! So impressed! And just like I predicted, it was epic! Well done amigo! 👊🏻
Thanks man! I got the itch and didn’t want to wait until tomorrow 😆
I needed this video a year ago lol. I made a mistake on my first upload ever and left the music too loud. To this day I still get comments on that video about my loud music. Thank you for the sharing your knowledge Tom!
Haha, we all make mistakes. And luckily they live forever on the internet.
@@tombuck LOL! Yes, they do. there is something so awesome about watching your old videos to see all the progress you've made tho!
Nice work! Great explanation and example.
Cool! Audio is one of my weaker points in editing and this was interesting to learn. Thanks for showcasing it!
You’re welcome! Audio is so often overlooked in making good videos.
Awesome, definitely gonna give this a try!
It’s kind of magical 🤯
Peter is a legend!
Awesome video thanks for the helpful tips on this always wonder how to do while editing videos I knew something was wrong with my videos and made it sound trash great channel learning a lot from you and very glad you use FCPX very helpful love the content
Also the muffled audio effect is great for background music.
Great tutorial and thanks for the shout out! High school digital media teachers unite!
Unite indeed! 😎👊
Learned a similar trick from Gerald Undone using a single band EQ where i basically scoop the mids, but it has less control than this method, so i think i may try this alternative on my next video. also, once i find an EQ i like, i save it as a preset so i can just drop it onto any music track I'm doing. nice video. well done!
Good luck! I’ve been using this so much since making this video. It’s a huge lifesaver.
Great video man!
Thank you! 👍
Cool!
Yes, buddy! Great info. Loving that.
Btw I’m in an around LA in April if you’re around for a coffee. Would be great to catch up again 👍🏻
I would LOVE that! Just keep me in the loop 👍
Scoop da mids
Just used this today!
Glad to hear it! I've used it in just about every project I've done since making this video 👍
@@tombuck Such an unexpectedly powerful tool! PS I also used the Audition Remix feature today. Your channel has become my go-to resource for video production. Thanks for your hard work!
