As a son of a chain gang leader who ran the chains for 17+ years I’m completely pissed I will have to now pay for my tickets.
I thought ur dad was in jail at first hahaha
Welcome to the real world
@@dylanruegger1214Yeah so real bring replaced by technology.
@@Theamericanglassguy using a chain to measure 10 yards is unbelievably tarded
@@ChiTownOriginator It’s tradition and lots of jobs will be lost. Could say the same thing about tasks and jobs done by factory workers. Guess we should just replace everything and let automation fully take over cuz as you say it’s tarded 💀
Week 1 will have 100 'moving the chains' jokes by announcers
at least
Negative. 1k minimum!?🤣💀
They still say it in UFL. Not ironicly either, just out of habit.
I'll take the over
God dammnit your right.
I kinda like the chain gang actually. The problem isn’t the chains, it’s the spot of the ball. The chains are an accurate way of measuring, but it’s ridiculous to measure something that precisely when the ball spot is always off by a yard.
EXACTLY!! chains are not the issue, it’s the refs interpretation of where the ball should be placed that’s controversial!
And the thing is, no amount of technology can help with spotting the ball accurately. The reason why is because of the rules of what constitutes a player being down and human anatomy. It is inherently subjective and will continue to be as such.
If where the ball should be marked could be accurately determined, there wouldn’t be a need for chain in the first place.
quit telling the truth
Its sad there wont be another "quiet" game. Where even if things go wrong, they can play a regular low tech game of football just in case. Just more of when the power went out after halftime and we all just sit around and wait....
R.I.P. measuing with an index card
That was already dead…
I still can't believe how baloney that was
😡
As a raider fan this still pisses me off
I was just about to bring this shyt up
At least with the chains you could "see" if it was a first down. Now we will never know. It will just be announced. Thats totally not a recipe for fraud at all.
No it’s not, how about waiting until this new tech actually comes out before you start crying fraud.
Amen!!!!
Watch the electronics won’t work in rain or snow, cold or heat.
The chains add a little bit of drama and suspense to the game that will no longer exist.

Turf is not “much worse”. Quit crying
@PhysicalFortitude Yes it is

Sideline chains isnt a issue nobody is complaining about them. Bogus roughing the passer calls and with the hip tackle being penalized now it will make it hard to tackle is some of things people are upset about.
This is to distract people from all that.
This was somebody's job
It’s a laughing stock
Spotting the ball properly is a big problem, also. Hopefully this allows the ball to be spotted more accurately
@@darrinnoble No - the chain gang was only kept so long because people found it entertaining... You are an idiot if you think the removal of them would distract when they were a literal distraction...
Another way for them to control the game now that sports betting is being legalized in a lot of states 🧐

doing everything to get rid of injuries but the thing that causes the most injuries, TURF
Good luck. The NFL came out with a report saying that they investigated those claims and found no difference in injury reports on turf vs grass fields. I think its BS but it just shows they don’t care
I read a few of those reports and honestly, they were interesting. The increase in injuries seemed to be for foot injuries instead of knee or hip injuries. And strong evidence that a simple change in footwear would fix most of the problem. Not saying it’s all facts, but it is interesting.
@RedBeardRey and I have read plenty of reports saying the EXACT opposite of that claim. Turf is objectively worse than normal grass.
@@troybaxterI think just playing on turf vs grass a lot I can tell the difference between them and turf is defiantly worse on my body
@@RedBeardReyRichardson got a concussion from hitting his head on the turf so I agree this is an issue needing a solution.
The chains will still be there for visual clarity for fans and tv. They will no longer serve as the primary measurement for the ball.
100% on board
Hoping to see this or I would have written it.
Lame and dumb. Might as well let the computer decide if the field goal will be kicked good and take the field goal out. Might as well take out every ref ever and have it all reviewed by people watching fixed cameras operated by people in the stands with no field view. Or maybe the guys holding the camera rigs will be like representative of the refs upstairs cause you don’t want them in the way. No no no. God forbid you train your refs better.
@@RichardPhist1terrible analogy. Electronic spotting isn’t “deciding” anything. It’s just making sure things are accurate. Refs should have as little impact on the game as possible so if a person behind a screen becomes the future of referees, if it’s resulting in better calls, who cares. Refs still need to be on the field to spot the ball/separate piles, manage players, etc.
That's what I was wondering. As a fan at the game, I still want to be able to see where the marker is. I'm sure the players do as well.
Cool, now is ya'll gonna do something about the refs?

Chains is the only thing they can’t lie about…
See the index card measurement play. Clearly NOT a first down
The chains were the easiest thing to lie about. The ball spot and chain gang are done by humans and will never get a perfect spot nor will they ever get the chains perfectly placed
@@FrakintheboX That's because you're assuming that the location the pole was set at was in fact the EXACT spot where the runner stopped, even though the runner has 8 guys on top of him!!! Therein lies the problem!
For example, assume it's 3rd & 1 and the offense goes for a rushing play...and the QB hands off to the running back, who after crossing the LOS, is immediately bombarded by 5 defenders, no one can see exactly where the true spot of the ball should be simply because by the time you pull everyone off the running back, he may have moved one way or another that will affect the call and thus, affect the game!
But… they DID lie about it… all the time
Wtf are you talking about 😂
Index card industry just took a hell of a hit.

Technology can hurt us not always save us. Moving the chains ⛓️ is the line that defines the game of football
Right, the refs move the ball from where it was spotted to where it will be put into play. The center moves the ball before the snap.
Will there be a "whoop....whoop" horn sound if the refs or center don't get the ball spot right after the initial spot?
We'll still probably use the phrase, like "touchdown"

I might be the minority here but I always loved the chain gang. The suspense when they had to run out onto the field was awesome. I understand having it done this way but damn man.
Bro ever since AJ got his teeth fixed a few months back, he hasn’t stopped smiling since. Love to see it! Lol
Genuinely sad. The chains were one of the antiquated fun things about Football.
Agreed. Chain gang is great theater.
Yes but so stupid. They always say that they won't review everything to prevent a delay of the game, but than they need to have two 70 years old dudes coming onto the field with the chains. Last year, a dude broke his leg because a player run into him on the sideline.
Come to germany. It will take at least a decade until hawk eye will be implemented. Most players aren't even getting paid yet
The chains led to many incorrect calls. It's very good for the game of football that they're gone
As we expand into Europe, our antiquated ways are embarrassing. That's likely one of reasons for this change.
Ive been that parent on the sideline working the chain gang. You take one look towards the nacho stand and bam 6 elementry kids in full pads take you out. 😂

If anything it'll be harder
What happens with the sensors when it’s snowing or fog or rain. … or the battery in the sensor fails from being kicked or hit hard?
The UFL is using it very well every week
HOW WILL THEY MOVE THE CHAINS WITH NO CHAINS TO MOVE. Watching them run down the sideline is its own entertainment
This is a classic solution to a problem that doesn't exist. There is NO REASON to get rid of the chain gang. It is consistent and fast. Just think of how buggy the new system will be.Have you seen soccer VAR? It is quite often blatantly wrong with offsides calls (they freeze the frame when they want, sometimes the ball is still being struck and sometimes after the ball is struck). That is what we have to look forward to.
And chipping an oblong ball isn't really feasible, either. The orientation of the ball will matter...and it will end up being LESS accurate than replay and the chain gang.
And chipping the ball doesn't solve the inherent issue of what constitutes the ball stopping. It isn't the ball's momentum, but the location of a second body (the player). And the player is going to be the absolute hardest to determine if they are down or not, because it's not just single points, but various parts of your body.
i am deeply saddened. i feel like i lost a family member
Thats a good step forward, next step, eliminate the ambiguity of where to place the ball after a play
Meanwhile nobody knows what a catch or pass interference is.
Or a tackle
The chains are apart of football them bringing it out and doing the job was so dope
It is important for the viewers. For drama and credibility purposes.
NFL Commissioner: Alright, guys, we are going to do great things this year. We have to get some things fixed. Refrees and turf included
Random guy in the back: HOw AbOUt We GEr RId OF ThE cHaINs
They also need a camera and microphone in the replay booth. If Goodale is so worried about that integrity of the game. We're sports betting in the hip drop tackle. Having something to keep things honest is needed
Lasers and sensors are stupid. KEEP THE CHAINS!
So measuring is less accurate?

This is a stupid idea
It's stupid when I can use my eyeballs and see that the refs miss the spot all the time. It can completely change the game just like a botched PI call, but unlike botched PIs , you can actually fix it and get it right every time.
C’mon man, there’s nothing better on a Sunday then the smell of fresh cut grass, stale beer in the stands and to hear the Ref holler, “Move The Chains”…for gawd sakes man, keep the frickin CHAINS, period! Cheers 🍻 to Pat and crew. 😎🇺🇸✌️
Sensors will have to be in sync with video replay somehow to show if a knee, elbow, or calf is down just before reaching the Sensor.
And even then, when you have a mass of bodies around a player, it can be impossible to tell when they hit the ground. People want to point to Europe, but the reality is that their game is more cut and dry and cleaner as to whether or not a ball or player crosses a line. That isn't the case with football because it is far more dynamic.
Love to know the PMS show's take on the UFL"s approach, with 4K Trueline tech. No sensors, but using all the 4K cameras data to triangulate the ball placement.
While not the only tool used by the UFL officials, it seems to be damn fast!
During the Washington vs USC football game this year they tested out a down-the-line first down camera to measure the ball during a review. It was incredible.
So how did it work? Where was the camera? I’m curious how that will work on something like a QB sneak, or something where there’s just a big pile of bodies.
How long until it's not football anymore? Reminds me of the old question, if you replace all the wood planks of a boat, is it still the same boat?
It might not be the exact same boat, but even if you replaced those planks with much more durable steel, as long as it floats, it’s still a boat, and it’s a better boat.
This is heartbreaking to me. Everything i once loved is turning unrecognizable.
Times just aren't the same, man.
Some one said when you don't recognize it's time to move on
@@idontknow-ym4wy damn. Ouch. I feel like I've heard a quote similar to that before.
Fans: We want better officiating. NFL: guess what? we’re getting rid of the chain gang
As long as they still having something that marks the 1st down for players so they know where the 1st is
If they are going the sensor route, they will end up changing it if its anything like the usfl recently used. When the usfl came back they introduced this new tech, but it didnt take long that qbs were complaining about the slight weight difference in the ball. After that, the company that made the tech introduced a super precise option that uses multiple cameras and doesn't require the sensor in the ball. This is what the ufl (xfl+usfl) are using today.
Can’t take away the chains! It’s the only reliable marker
If you go down the rabbit hole you will find out they are not reliable
Lol “reliable”
“reliable” bro they have 82 year olds with thicker glasses than your viena sausage measuring the line
These comments are cracking me up, like we haven't seen the refs pull the chains out and STILL manage to blow the call😂
Oh, that's going to go well. (presses sarcasm button)
Retail stores have had this technology for 30 years. Something crosses a plane, it beeps. All these years the NFL refs have used the chains in addition to their eyes to spot where a ball was downed. I've always wondered how the hell can they tell where the ball was downed when there's 16 huge men on top of it?
You are correct - forward progress is more of an issue than the precision of a 10 yard chain.
Technology ain't gonna help with the spot because you still need to know when the player is down and whether or not the ball has been jarred loose.
the only method I can think of is to put multiple sensors in every player's uniforms, and put a giant pressure sensitive pad under the field surface so that when a ball carrier goes down, they can go back to his sensor data, and the pad under the field would tell them which sensor touched the ground first and exact point of contact, at the same time it could also tell them where the ball was in relation to the field at the moment. All the refs would need to do is establish whether there was still possession at that the time...if they could free up the refs enough that they could actually watch the play for penalties without having to constantly monitor ball position and player body position, it would make a lot of those missed penalties we always see go away...
Trying to fix a part of the game that doesn’t need fixing. Bravo NFL
This is a horrible idea. They always say the lines they put on the field is not accurate. So we are going to switch to a system that's totally reliant on it. The chain gang is the most accurate way to measure first downs. Stop ruining the game.
They say that because it's the *TV people* putting the line on the field, not the league. Because it's a TV feature, not actually apart of the game, they aren't apart of the officials.
As if a guy holding a stick "about" where a ref said the ball should be was ever accurate...
This is. A good point. The audit function needs to be thoroughly vetted first. So it won’t be…,
So the guy holding the first stick jogs off the sideline, 30 yards out onto the field, watching out for players and officials, keeping an eye on the chain and his stick partner... then puts it down on the field where he thinks he was on the sideline. I think the sensors can probably achieve that accuracy. 😁
@cf2851 yeah that's not how chain gang works. There is a marker that clips to the links of the chain that delineated the LOS and thats where the down marker goes. The 2 side judges then keep track of thr original LOS and the current LOS so if the chains go down they can line the chains up exactly the way they were before. The chain gang system is so incredible accurate at spotting the ball it's almost unbelievable.
Now they can't lean the chain pole back or forward to give either team the advantage. Fet rid of chains and use the metal ropes with the plastic coating.
Don’t take away the chain gang please. The human element in sports is needed
I thought the biggest problem with the marking of the ball is officials running up to where the play stopped and essentially guessing wher the ball should be spotted. Can't imagine how many first downs have been gifted or taken away by bad spots.
Rip the chain gang😭
These 97 yr old men coming out with chains got me dead😂☠️
Aww keep retro, nostalgia chain gangs❤😂
lol, the Terrence Howard reference was gold.
I didn’t even know people disliked the chain gang like cmon
They've been placing sensors into everything for years now, they can track all the players and the ball on the field and do so for TV and the stats. This is going to work just fine, it's probably just a bit more advanced than the tv first down markers they track right now for the TV broadcasting.
No longer will players "move the chains" They'll move the Electronically Tracked Measurements
I was on a chain gang, it was hilariously fun. I clipped a marker on the link on whatever 5 yard line was nearest the center of the chain ends. For example, if the spot was on the 24, I would clip a marker on the link on the 30 yard line. Then when a measurement was needed, that link with the marker would be centered on the 30 yard line and that's how they would measure.
This is stupid, just cause you can change doesn't mean you should. Leave the chain gang
The Vegas will love this.
The chains belong in football
Nahhh, they gotta evolve. Embrace the technology
Hell no. So dumb it even existed this long with the tech we have these days. I know there’s gotta be tons of calls that got screwed because of human error
AJ: wants to play without a helmet
Also AJ: the biggest issue with the first down stick is injuries
Spring football been testing this out already.

We need sensors that light up. When a foot crosses out the sidelines illuminates. When the ball crosses the goal line it illuminates. When it crosses the first down line it illuminates.
It's not the simple. You have to consider the state of the player and whether they are down or not. Yeah, we can see if the ball crosses the goalline, but the question is whether or not the player's body was on the ground before the ball crossed or if the ball gets jarred loose. It's just not as simple as y'all make it out to be, and parse through the noise to find the accurate and reliable data is sometimes outright impossible.
But fulltime refs is to expensive...

NFL just adding to the list to control the outcome of the games. What the sports media ignored was that the call was wrong. All they could talk about was Biggest Gene Salvatore and the card.... Gene made it about himself. When you can slide a card between the ball and stick.... there's obviously a small gap.... that's not a first down. Sheesh!
2:05 it didnt slide between them all the way, thats why he marked it first down.
The issue isn’t the chains, it’s the fact of how arbitrary placement is after every down for where the next snap will be. We measure and will go down to the nearest inch yet the placement is just an estimate, so is the inch really that important?
