I live in boiling hot Florida and unlike my other orchid society members who are most likely retired and have all the time in the world to water daily in their baskets … I cannot. I don't do well with mounting or basket culture due to time constraints.
Someone had mentioned bonsai pots. Im planning on getting those plastic bonsai pots from amazon. Amazon sells a pack of them that are shallow, wide, and comes with a tray a set of 4 or 5?🤷🏻‍♂️. Gonna convert and report all of the bulbos this spring.
Thanks for the update! Hoping to see a Orchids Care for beginners for the Bulbophyllums on the horizon

I live in a climate with hot stormy summer and cold dry winter and grow bulbophyllum indoors. Mine are in shallow self-watering containers. One kind of like a lechuza that’s a shallow-square-bowl and the other with a diy salad bowl and outer decorative reservoir (inspired by your setup). I need self watering because I can’t water more than once a week due to time. When mine outgrow I’m thinking of cutting off older growths and using same containers. I have seen bulbos in orchid shows grown in very large (40cm+) plastic saucers meant for huge pots so they’re like a wide round tray and 5-10cm sides but gotta have space for a bigger setup I guess… I was thinking of looking at storage containers if they make some wide and shallow e.g. drawer organisers?? Look forward to seeing your next update to see what ideas you come up with

Hey Danny, I am trying out 100% tree fern fibre and it’s good both air and moisture at the same time. My orchids are loving it. For my bulbophyllum, I can get away with bark, moss and some perlite with vermiculite for more water retention. Try it out 👍🏽
Thank you for all your amazing videos! I have learnt so so much over the years and can maintain my orchid collection 😅❤

I use plastic paint buckets and cut vent slots with my grinder to mimic regular orchid pots for my orchids that need big pots or to combine multiple of some of mine

I have learned a lot from watching your videos on all kinds of orchids. The climate I currently live in is much different than the climate you are in. I live in the USA, Pacific Northwest. Summers can get up to 95F for about 3 days, but 80 to 90F is the usual highest temp with nighttime lows 55 to 60F. Winters will be mild: lows at night may hit freezing (usually warming by mid-morning) with day temps in the 40s and 50s. Because of that, I can't grow orchids outside year round. I grow phals, cymbidiums (but not well), cattleya, miltoniopsis, brassavola, bulbophyllum, hoya, paphiopedilum, and African violets all inside with added heat, humidifying, or air conditioning when needed. My indoor humidity usually ranges from 30% to 50%, depending on the weather; indoor temps range from 60F at night to 70F daytime in winter, and 55F nighttime to 85F daytime in summer.
The bulbophyllum I grow are the miniature type, bulbophyllum hirundinis and bulbophyllum electrinum. I have had great success growing them in either ceramic "berry baskets" or in glass jars with lids under botanical LEDs and large windows on the east and south side of the orchidarium. I use a little sphagnum moss mixed in layers within bark. The glass jars retain moisture so well that I can go for weeks at times before watering; I do remove the lid for a day occasionally to get fresh air into the jars.
I don't know if the glass jar method is something you would like to do, but I thought I would tell you my story.
Thank you for your videos and the knowledge you provide.
    Happy holidays!!!

I have my bulbophyllum eberhardtii on a big shallow plate (a big showy plate). The first layer is bark, than i put the orchid on it. I finished it with a lot of spagnum moss. I know, there is a shortage, but i only have to water it, every 5 days. And she would have flowered this year, if i didn't broke the flowerspike.

Danni, don't know if you're reading but, I now have "an" orchid thanks to you, am trying to be scientific about it, just used my non-contact infrared thermometer to take some measurements, my house is currently at 68F, and the leaves on the shady side of my orchid measure 68F, the ones that are in direct sunlight are measuring 88F, and this oncidium twinkle is currently thriving, pushing out its second spike, don't know what will happen in the summer when even with A/C the house ambient temp will be more like 78 and 68, but also with the angle of the sun being higher this particular kitchen window won't allow any direct sunlight. So we shall see !!!

My daisy chain is in a big food strainer (Plastic) It is growing very well. I do live in a more humid environment. I have them in full Sphagnum moss. I just had to divide it. I have another Bulbo that needs to be repotted too. I think I am just going to divide it.

I love Bulbos!! My Medusae has been in spike now for what seems well over two months 😂 but I grow her in a food container that I converted into a planter. She absolutely loved it immediately and looks stunning. I found a cosmetics basket that fits perfectly and it just really heightens her appearance when you enter my grow space. If her bud ever opens I will have to post a pic on IG! Maybe it will give you an idea for your Bulbo 😊 Merry Christmas Danny!

Question if someone has space to take them outside to hose off. If it’s grown indoors, is it okay to take out your water? I don’t have those particular orchids, but might someday.

Curious...have you tried growing your bulbos in self-watering pots? I tried growing bulbos a few years ago but they didn't do well. I live in a climate that is hot and dry during summer, and cold and wet during winter. I do not have the option of growing outside.

Hi Danny! This bulbophyllum update was fantastic! Have you tried finger knited yarn(100% synthetic) as a substitute for sphagnum moss? I got this idea from another youtuber called Paul the Plant Parent.
