Hi Danny, I have a question but need to give some context. I have 10 store bought Phalaenopsis. A couple of months ago I finally took 2 orchids out of a glass vase (they were given to me as a gift). I left them in it for way too long and they were in desperate need of care. I got the lights, sphagnum moss and fertilizer (Feed me) all from Repot Me and followed ALL your directions verbatim. Repotted and cut the dead roots (it wasn’t my first time). As a result they are both giving me an INSANE amount of roots. The one that I thought would die has 17 roots (ground, not aerial). But ALL the leaves on both are so VERY limp/dehydrated. No pests, no snails and they both have one new very healthy leaf growth. I am VERY careful about watering. I can't find the answer to this question anywhere. Should I be worried? What can I do? Hopefully this question will help somebody else in my situation. Thank you so much!
Leaves that have been dehydrated for long enough will sometimes never recover. They are permanently damaged and the plant will start to prioritize new leaves and not heal the old ones. You just need to wait for the old ones to fall off.
Oh my! My phalaenopsis needs desperate help! The roots are ALL gone, the arial roots look limp and not green and plump! The leaves also look limp. I don’t see any new growth. But the best thing i did was to get the repotme kit with the plastic container to replant and the soil mix. So I am hoping it will revive the poor old plant! I do see that the potting container is a tad bit taller so can I fill the mix at the bottom also and insert the plant and then fill the rest around the plant? Would that be the correct way to do it? Any insight to save the poor thing will help! Thank you in advance. I do not have a green thumb like you do! What amazing plants you have!!
Hello Danny, thank you for teaching about Orchids I learned a lot. I have 8 newly acquired polychilos like Equestra, Bellina, speciosa, Tetraspis and others including NoIDs. Regarding the watering, I learn some orchids needs to dry some must not dry and others I just don't know... I found all this confusing. Can you tell us more about it? I wish I could aim for a middle ground, like a very short (24h) drying period for all of them? Could this work? I keep a 40% + humidity in my grow space.
I have noticed that in some dendrobium varieties, the same canes often get multiple flower spikes, where as in some other varieties, one spike is all i get per cane.Growing conditions, fertilizers etc are same in both the cases. Is this something to do with genetics of the hybrids or is it that some varieties require more nutrients than others to produce blooms.
ruclips.net/user/shorts1oI0BUnb7JY?feature=share I have had issues with this one orchid but since we moved it likes it new home better....Can you tell me what the two purple things are growing underneath the leaves are? I love your videos as well as the knowledge you share! Thank you!
@@katearnold7127 I live in Ohio so of course all of my orchids live inside. I tried putting them in the basement last fall for over two months hoping the drop in temperature would yield flower stalks. It worked on only two of the 18 orchids. But the flower stalks developed very small buds which ultimately fall off without ever opening. These are all grocery store hybrids that I rescue when stores put them on clearance.
Temperature is usually the most important factor in getting an orchid to bloom but it's not usually the cause of the blooms stopping unless your tempurature fluctuates to really high temps. When you say you put them in the basement do they get enough light? And are you continuing to water them?
@@katearnold7127 in the basement they were in the deep wells at the glass block windows which let in a lot of light. I still watered by soaking in lukewarm water for 20 minutes every ten days.

Hi Danny, love the new hair!! Very flattering. Wondering if you've ever had or seen a phal with totally different flowers on both sides of same spike. I have one 5 years old blooming now doing that, it's gorgeous shades of purples, looks like a harlequin. Last bloomed in 2020 but all flowers were similar then, now only 3 on one side look close to those. 2 on other side of spike are a completely different pattern, and 3rd just opened and its a combination of each pattern!! Hello Danny, thanks for your videos, they are really helpful. I am very new to Orchids and have a couple of Phalaenopsis'. Where can I have a possible orchid, growing outdoors, identified? (The various internet apps available are contradicting each other). It is growing between and on some rocks in my garden and looks like a Cattleya. Thanks in advance.
Have you ever planted a vanilla bean orchard? What medium would I use? It stays indoors and the room gets rather warm during the summer and in the winter it's warm in the day but cools off at night
Hi Danny, Thank you for all the great videos! I have a few questions, but I'll start with one since it is quite long. I've had my Phal. Liu's Triprince "KU" since the beginning of 2023. She came with flowers in the box and looked amazing. Now she looks sad, doesn't want to grow new leaves, and keeps trying to bloom. She's putting out a flower spike for the fourth time since I've had her but the buds keep blasting and I just want her to focus on her leaves. So I cut the last flower spike before it got too big. How can I stop her trying to bloom? I'm in the Netherlands and she is in a cabinet with barrinas (they are on from 9 to 9). The day time temp is about 24C (in late March). At night it is around 18C. She is pest free as far as I can see and roots are okay. Hopefully you can answer this! Thanks!
I am glad someone asked about orchid transport. I have the same question. Need a clarification: when you say transport in their pots (with plant/spikes wrapped with paper) you mean as it is or put them in carton boxes? Thanks Dani for all the education… have been following your advise and adapt to my environment since i started my orchid journey around 5 years ago
What is the best medium for Dendronium Nobilies? I have one Nobiles left and hasn't flowered for ages, so thinking the medium is wrong and possibly needs more light.
Great Q and A video, learning so much, thank you. I am just setting up a Milsbo greenhouse indoors to promote growth and blooms on some of my orchids. Am using the Bellina led lights. What it the best most adhesive tape to use to prevent the lights dropping off and do you recommend use of a mini fan for best air circulation.
Hi Danny, thank you for all your advice. I have a mounted Den. Nobile which I am considering potting in the new year but am concerned about root loss getting it off its mount. I do have an option to pot it on it's mount in a rectangular pot, would that be an option at all?
I'm new, 3 months and 25 orchids later. Doing okay, thanks to your immense amount of energy I feel educated and confidant. I have Vanda, Cattleya, Phal, Tolumnia, Dendrobium, Encyclia, Oncidium. What makes me still nervous, is, how long can these orchids stay "wet" or "damp"? Is 1 week okay? Is 2 weeks okay? I want to use more sphagnum, but I'm scared. 😄 Edit: 2nd question.. I have a Phal with really good roots, but nothing is happenning above the media. No flower spike, no new leaves, current leaves aren't doing anything. They're not yellowing atleast, but literally nothing is going on above the media. Could something be wrong? There is literally no growth, except for the roots.
Just make sure it dries out within a day and water once the moss is like bone dry, oncidiums may take more water but you’re doing the best if you just wash the roots and let them air dry, moss will take longer to dry out but sometimes that’s good
Maybe try water culture in your aquariums? Clip a net pot to the sides and as long as your aquarium is sufficiently oxygenated they should be happy. I maintain some aquariums for clients and at one's request I put a cymbidium into his bog filter about a year ago, it's made several new pseudobulbs and flowered recently. I've got a Bletia and several Phalaenopsis in aquariums at home as well. A surprisingly successful experiment

Yes cut the spikes, ik its sad but best for the plant and u in the long run! Repot, and give it a good watering. Be sure to check for mealy bugs (little white guys). The leaves of my orchids have always shriveled when there r mealy bugs present. U can kill the with alcohol if thats the case. Also check for mold during the repot. If present, spray all roots with hydrogen peroxide. Continue to water normally (dani has vids on this is u arent sure about how often to water)
As far as I've gathered from her videos she never stops watering almost all of her orchids. She waters them any time the pot is dry/almost dry no matter what time of the year.
My orchids have sticky clear drops on the leaves as well as mini brown circle dots/shells 😮 Tried to find out more about it online but getting mixed information. Some say it’s normal, some say it’s disease from bugs 😢 Would love to have you make a video about this! Thank you so much!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
The clear sticky drops r probably what danny (and now i would call) “happy sap.” Its a sign that the orchid is doing well and has lots of nutrients! As for the spots, there r sooo many different things that could be. It could be anything from pests to sunburn to a fungal infection to fly poop haha. I think that the scales guess is probably right based on ur use of “shells” in which case, u can kill them with alcohol :) just put some on a q-tip and dab away

Can commercially bottled alkaline water (7.8-8.2ph) be used for watering any type of orchid?
I forgot to add that I have been using rain water in a barrel from my gutters since 2020 with no untoward effects.
I'm not Dani but I'm pretty sure she has said that neutral to very slightly acidic water is best for orchids. So a safe zone between 6-7.5 ideally.
Water that is alkaline isn't the best for nutrients absorption. Water that is slightly acidic is best for that.
