    I am an air conditioning design engineer, and I wish that these little, amazing, space-age "miracle cubes" could actually do what the ads say. They are evaporative coolers. The capacity is determined by the amount of water that evaporates and generates adiabatic cooling. The sensible cooling effect from water evaporation is 1 BTU/pound . A gallon is 8.3 pounds. Evaporating water into vapor extracts around 1100 BTU/pound. Over an hour, this would be equivalent to 1100 BTU/hour. Car air conditioners are usually around 24,000 BTU/hour, circulating around 1,000 cubic-feet-per-minute (CFM) which means that you have to evaporate 20 pounds, or 2 1/2 gallons of water-per hour to cool a car interior The units have, what, a 1-pint reservoir, and circulate around 50 CFM? The other issue is that the higher the humidity, the lower the amount of water you can evaporate, which is why residential and industrial evaporative cooling only works well in dry, desert conditions. Using an evaporative cooler inside a car will only raise the humidity and lower the cooling effect. 'Fraid not, folks, there aren't any miraculous little boxes than can cool a car, a room or a house. Would that it were so.

    My AC went out in my Jeep and I live in the Mohave desert, with thankfully low humidity. My wife has been very sick and we must drive 1.5 hours through the mountains to her next important Drs. appointment, so I've been looking for a temporary solution. The plan is to bring an ice water filled cooler with us and fill the unit with that and place the cooling unit in a small tub or cat litter box to catch any water spillage going around turns and up and down the roadways ( I may duck tap the water lid too) and have her hold it in her lap directly facing her. The severe heat out here has reached 115 F and desperate times calls for some ingenuity until my vehicles AC can be repaired. Thanks for posting this real world experience about the product. Ice chest AC works way better, small 12 volt or battery powered fan, cheap ice chest (even styrofoam ice chest will work) any kind of saw that you can cut a hole with and some pvc pipe or any scrap piping to direct the air through the ice. Lots of DIY videos of AC coolers on RUclips for direction, and they flat work great.

    I used to live in Israel, in Eilat. Air humidity there is close to zero, very dry and hot air. Every apartment and every house has one of these, but big ones, and they work! With very low humidity you will get temperature drop more than 20 degrees (C) just by evaporating water. If you go a bit North, where humidity is higher, you won't find these kind of air conditioners, because with higher humidity they're useless. I think this is same thing: zero humidity - cooling will work, some humidity - won't work.

      Jut like running a fridge inside a room, it will heat the room up. How AC actually works is that it draws the heat in the room outside and radiates it away, while the circulating coolant chills the room, not entirely dissimilar to how a fridge works. The cold air is inside, while the heatsing is outside the space what we are cooling.

      I would think it adds more humidity too . I’m not positive but I think it’s set up like what we use at the auto shop I work at . It’s has a fan and the air passes over this water that trickles through the back . It seems to feel cool as long as your working next to it but sometimes it seemed to raise the humidity and make you feel even hotter when you were further away from it .

I passed out going to work 3 weeks ago it was so hot in my car. I got dizzy and swerved off the road. Luckily someone pulled over and called the ambulance. My kids summer has been ruined since I only take the car to work an hour away at that, just to make ends meet. I have literally cried so many times in that car on my way to work or coming back from my long hour drive home from work. I feel horrible I saved up for a family car for my kids and I and I only ruined everything by buying a non functional vehicle. 😪😪

    This is a 180 on the current discussion, but you can humidify in cold, dry conditions with an evaporative system. We were at a convention in Washington, D.C., staying at the Sheraton Hotel near Embassy Row. The rooms were incredibly dry inside and uncomfortable for sleeping. The AC for each room was a square corner drywall-framed construction with a low intake grille and upper chilled-water and hot-water coils. I unscrewed the grille, which was about 4" off the floor, laid in the D.C. Yellow Pages directory, filled the room ice bucket with water, set it on the phone book, dipped in a hand towel and stretched it across the framed opening inside the grille. The water wicked right up. After 3 buckets full, the room was nicely saturated. The windows even fogged up on the inside.

    I live in the Desert, My office is my car, I work nights. Just an usb air venter gives me a hot car instead of a *molten* one. believe me it is an improvement. Will this at least add enough humidity (unlike the south it actually helps keep us cool) for long enough to make it less hot in the car (along with having the windows blocked) during the day that I can store my equipment (12 hour shifts) in the car instead of bringing it all in?

    My brother bought one for the bed of his truck where he has to live at under a carport well we look for a bigger place. We are in New Mexico where it can can get 105° during the summer. He was very disappointed as it never go cold ever after follow all the instructions. He said if anything it made it hotter with the motor running. He bought direct from the Artic Air Website and will be sending it back for a full refund if possible. Not worth buying on as it's nothing more then a poorly made table top fan. 😔

  • @davidg.johnson7574
    @davidg.johnson7574 2 года назад +1

    I agree with Kareem. It's an evaporative cooler. They are usually cheap, have no condenser and work by blowing air over a wet screen. And they only work in dry desert climates.
    YOUR CAN MAKE YOUR OWN CHEAP EVAPORATIVE COOLER!"; Just put an electric or battery operated fan blowing wind at a damp towel that's hanging 2 or 3 inches in front of the fan (but not laying on the fan due to fire hazard). When the towel starts to dry, dampen it again. The water evaporating off the damp towel makes the air colder! These evaporative coolers don't work on the East Coast where there is more humidity. If your on the East Coast, look for a small portable A/C that has a condenser. If your lucky you may find a portable 12 volt one that can run off of batteries. They are expensive though.
