    I lived in my car for 2 years. What I did was I found a mechanic shop and made an agreement with the owner to sleep outside the shop in the parking lot and ward off trespassers at night and the tow guys would give me the keys for car drop offs. What I got in return was the ability to plug in my box fan at night with an extension cord to the shop. I stayed cool that way. I was also able to shower at night behind the shop with a watering hose. In the winter time when I would shower outside I would wash as fast as possible while leaving the heat running in my car for me to jump back into. Wash real fast. Dry off fast and hop in a nice dry warm car. I did attempt to camp in the woods behind the shop but after the first night realised it was dangerous due to the area. Best of luck to you all! Update for those wondering. I was only living in a 2 door Pontiac sunfire and made it work. So can you!

      Hindsight is 20/20, but you could have gotten one of those little stand-up air conditioning units that looks a little like R2 D2. Fix the vent to where it goes out your car window and it has more than enough power to keep you icy cold. It only takes a 110 plug, too.

    What I do when it's so hot that I can't sleep, I run a body towel in super cold water (I'd use the gym shower to do this), ring it out, and use that as a "blanket". The heat will flow from your body into the towel on your skin. Obviously you might want to keep some kind of waterproof cover on your bed area so it doesn't get moldy, gross, etc. You might shiver a bit at first but it's SO relieving and effective. Usually lasts most of the night too. Don't even need a fan because that will just dry it out quicker which you don't want. Plus it's free and easy to do.

      Yeah it's cheaper to stay cool but harder in hot climate.
      It's more expensive to stay warm but easier than staying cool.
      It's just the laws of thermodynamics energy moves from the high state to a low state.
      So basically if you're cooler than your environment heat travels into you. If you're hotter than your environment heat travels out of you.
      It's easier to stop heat from traveling out of you and more expensive to heat up your environment.
      It's hard to stop heat from traveling into but cheaper to cool your environment.
      Your environment being your car in this case including the environment outside your car which why it's expensive to heat up because that heat is leaving your small environment into an extremely huge environment(outside).

    For people watching this, 1. unless you're in the desert, anything that adds water to the inside of your car is going to cause mold. 2. Let your windows down. Your car is a metal box. It's going to always be hotter inside your car. 3. It doesn't hurt your battery at all to run your car at night. The only thing you're going to do is burn gas, my car burned about 2 or 3 gallons, and it was worth it since living in a car during the summer CAN KILL YOU. Heatstroke is a real possibility, especially in the south, so do what you need to do to stay alive. If those fans work, awesome. Use them. If they don't, run your car's AC. Dude is young. His body is hella efficient. Not drinking water and only running those fans could kill an older person.

    Makes sense to me. Most places are going to be too humid for evaporative cooling to be effective/comfortable. I would want super silent fans though because the noise inside the vehicle would draw attention at night. The ceiling netting has me thinking though 👍

  • @krisrodrigues1
    @krisrodrigues1 7 месяцев назад +1

    Thats good advice... I'll stay away from the evaporative water cooler as I live in a humid area. That one is pretty expensive too, although I know you can get much cheaper (less efficient) ones. I was contemplating getting a compressor portable AC (the type used for camping, tents etc, not the ones for home use). Expensive too, and it requires exhaust ventilation through a hose. But that should not cause moisture inside, no more than your car AC would. And it may not be too hard to rig up a window vent. But if you are in your car or SUV, as opposed to a van, space may be an issue as the compressor AC is a good size. A new trend is DYI window ventilation kits and there are some you can buy. Yup a fan is probably the best way to go and I like that you got a nice big one as that is what it will take during extremely hot times. I recommend having a container of ice and ice water that you can periodically wet a small towel or sponge with and dab yourself with the ice water while the fan is on you. You will get so cold fast. Yeah, its temporary (so you got to repeat it) but will bring your temperature down and cool you preventing possible heat sickness. The cool feeling can last a surprising amount of time though if you keep a fan directly on you. And you can wet your shirt a little and let that dry off on you.

  • @MUSIC-JoyceHansonAnderson-d4m
    @MUSIC-JoyceHansonAnderson-d4m Месяц назад

    I learned that having a fan of course is necessary in hot weather at night, but also a cooler of ice and ice water with 2 hand towels in it works fantastic too for short periods of extreme heat to get short term total relief from the heat. Just wring out one of the cold hand towels to wipe your arms and neck, face etc., and then leave it on your body and/or specially the neck 'til it loses it's cooling affect, and then exchange it with the other ice cold hand towel that's been in the cooler. Of course keep exchanging each warmer towel back into the cooler of ice water when getting a fresh cool towel. You can lower your over all body temperature this way when you are awake ..... In the daytime, if you keep a cold damp towel around your neck it works fantastic because All the blood in your whole body circulates and eventually goes up the arteries in your neck to the head. So when that circulating blood passing through your neck cools, it travels and cools the whole body. I do this when cutting my grass at home on a hot day. I'll keep a cold towel draped across my neck to stay cooled.

    The following idea is not better but different. I know someone who sleeps on TOP of his car in a rural area under the shade in the summertime with mosquito netting and a tiny fan plugged into his Jackery. When it's rainy, he uses a car-top tent. Your idea sounds a lot simpler than this one, especially in bear country!

I've seen no one come up with this idea and I am wondering whether this is genius or straight up stupid, LOL

  • @lorduvaltv274
    @lorduvaltv274 3 года назад +2

    Good solution! And I agree, this actually seems like it works well vs a mist fan with an Amazon affiliate link in the description 😄
    Question though! How many hours can the fan run on your Yeti battery? What is the power consumption in watts per hour?
    I have the Jackery 240 charger and will need to get a fan soon to get through the summer heat in Texas.
    Thanks 🙏

      It's been awhile but I believe they last like 1.5 nights both plugged in without recharging the yeti, so that is definitely something to keep in mind! Best case scenario is to have solar panels to charge while you're not running the car or charge it at your office, etc

I should definitely make a video about what he also said about parking! So true that safest parking doesn't mean darkest or most isolated. In fact that's the least safe.

    If you are living out of your car you should have a hybrid. I had a Prius and I took the passenger seat and console out . Then I got a crib frame and mattress some milk crates and a pair of crutches. I have had major back surgery and use a CPAP machine I was weighing 360 lbs too I slept very well did this for 2weeks straight. Have a video too. Other things that work , shade, stragecially park where you have shade. You don't make cold you remove heat. Flying car cover works too. Wear clothing that keeps you cool. I use to wear long sleeve white shirts reflect uv and uses your sweat to cool you.
    South Louisiana fans can help but you will have to wash your bedding each day. It's midnight and 85° 75% humidity go out for 10 seconds you are drenched in sweat.
    The car I own now is not a good choice for living from, I have a runaway camper and generator.

    I’ve been living full time in my car for the past 9 1/2 months. I live in Los Angeles and have been dreading the summer heat. I’ve been brainstorming on ideas on how to keep cool. I’ve seen that those fans are really popular amongst van dwellers. Maybe I’ll pick up a few. I was thinking of a full blown portable a/c on the passenger seat and have it connected to an extension cord out of the window. I’m not a traveler. I’ve been staying in a friends driveway for a few months and hopefully throughout the end of summer. My idea sounds far fetched, but I’m a wuss when it gets in the 80’s. LOL !
