My Super-cheap Trip on the Cumbrian Coast and Furness Lines with Northern Trains.

- The third and final part of my bargain rail fare videos with Northern trains. This actually covers the whole of the Cumbrian Coast line from Carlisle to Barrow-in-Furness PLUS the Furness line from Barrow-in-Furness down to Lancaster. I'll show you some of the scenery, we'll have a look at the train for the first part (a class 156) and I'll let you know how much I paid for both these trips.
Thanks very much for watching.
Mark

I am catching up on your previous videos Mark and this one was revealing a part of England I am not familiar with. I do remember visiting Grange-over-Sands when I was a wee boy. We were travelling down to Morecambe on holiday. I too appreciate making up my own itineraries on my travels. In more recent years, I have discovered some lovely parts of the northern coast of Spain using the Euskotren network in the Basque country and the FEVE network from Santander to Ferrol in Galicia. All these lines are narrow gauge and it is the slow way to explore some lovely parts of Spain which are free of the tourists of the more popular hotspots of the Mediterranean. For those who have the cash, there is El Transcantábrico, a classic hotel train which operates for much of the year.
Cheers Michael. I have been thinking about the FEVE for a while now. Will have to get back down to Santander and do it. Thanks for watching the vids, appreciated 😊👍
I really like how your trip reports are about achievable to the 99% of us rather than the first class lounge and if the luxury facilities are *sigh* ok, what Champagne they’re serving pre flight and if the lay flat bed is better than the other one type of travel trip reports you find here. You’re refreshing so thanks for what you do
Hi John, this is much appreciated cheers. I’ve been feeling a bit de-motivated about it all in recent days tbh as I’m not sure whether many people are interested. But yes, your comment makes sense and that’s what I’m going to keep on doing! I certainly can’t afford the champagne travel lifestyle, so there won’t be much of that coming up! Kind words mate - really helps. Thank you 😊
@@LetsMakeaTrip That's great to hear, much prefer the ordinary mode of transport rather then the luxury type.
Harrington is famous for it was the 1st station to Have raised humps to make wheelchair access easier,These are known as " Harrington Humps"
Cheers Alan, I never knew that but every time I see one now I’ll remember. Nice one 😊👍
Great Trip Report as always! I love seeing these off the beaten track trips. Brilliant value for money too. I see you were over in Belfast recently - can’t wait for the video! ✈️
Hi AFUK, thanks for your support as usual - really appreciate it. I’m actually still over here doin some filming and I’m taking the Enterprise train down to Dublin tomorrow before flying back. Should be three videos from this including the BA Cityflyer from BHX - BHD 😊👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip oh brilliant. I took a trip from Belfast Great Victoria to L/Derry on Wednesday. Weather wasn’t great but it has the best scenery round the north coast. Hope you are enjoying your visit!
@@richardnei I am. Yes the weather is ‘changeable’ it’s fair to say but I’ll need to come back and do some more exploring tbh - too much to do in one short trip.
Great video, I'm from that part of the world, Cumbrian Coast and Furness Lines are my favourite train lines, however it helps if you have good weather when you travel.
Cheers Stephen, yep the weather gave it a real starkness (which was quite atmospheric in a way) but I would like to go back and do it again in the summer tbh.
The reason those signs don't say whitehaven is because it's facing towards the tesco store. Where the odd train stops/departs from... Great video....
Ah cheers lord baltar! Thanks for the info 👍
Another great trip, I do like the names of the various stations some really do suit an overcast day. Take care and stay safe, cheers.
Ah cheers Simon. Yep I was thinking Lord of the Rings for Silecroft and Millom!!
We have never had catering on the Cumbrian Coast Line, and USB sockets/Wi Fi is still relatively unusual. It just depends on what stock is in use on the day, certainly can't be depended on.
Hi Stuart, cheers for the clarification. A few outlets in Carlisle to stock up on anyway (which is good). Overall, I thought the 156 was pretty decent tbf. 😊👍
Thank you. Looked great. Love the 70s lounge music
Cheers 😊👍
Another enjoyable and informative watch.
Many thanks.
David in Devils Bridge.
Love the way you managed to slip in the line "Brief encounter" when you where coming into Carnforth station, referring to the film of the same name.
Dave I was wondering if anyone would spot that. Cheers mate, I knew it would be worth putting it in one day 😊👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip One of my favourite films, saw it again only last week on bbc 2
Did you know ... when Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston in 1890, the town was part of Lancashire, not Cumbria. It became part of Cumbria as late as 1974.
I knew he was born there. We went for a few days about three years ago I think. I liked the town - good pubs and yes, a statue of Stan Laurel. Also the Hoad monument up on the hill which is a lovely walk from the town. I guess some kind of boundary change affected the its county location.
Excellent footage 💖💖💖💖😁🍷🍷🍷🍷🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🍸🍸🍸🍹🍹🍹🥂🥂🥂🍷🍷🍷🍷
Thanks mate, I’ve had a couple of 🍺🍺 tonight but could do with a ☕️now - another 🚈🎬to do tomorrow 👍
Another great adventure.
Cheers Phil.
Nice video, and yet another route I'd love to take!
Cheers mate, look out for those flash sales!!
That line needs good weather and high tide, if you want to attract a lot of viewers, more preparation needs to be made.
Great trip report
Thank you Luis 👍
Please, eliminate the music. The noise of the train and your voice are ok, but when you combine them with music, you create a mess, especially as the music is also too loud as the background.
Max, quite happy to take criticism on board, but on this occasion I think that your comment regarding the combination of train noise, voice and music creating ‘a mess’ is a bit harsh. The background music should compliment the journey and that is the style of my content. I accept that some viewers are just interested in the sound of the train and maybe this type of travel vlog is not for them, but I’m trying to portray the whole journey (which includes the scenery as much as the mode of transport).
To be honest, I very rarely get negative comments about the music, so I do want to explore this a bit more. If you feel inclined, can you do me a favour and reference the time stamps where you think this is specifically an issue so that I can have a look. No worries if you don’t and I wish you all the best anyway. Mark.
@@LetsMakeaTrip Sorry, I didn't mean to insult you and sorry to use the word "mess" (as a non native speaker I couldn't find a more appropriate one at the moment). What I was referring to is mainly your description of the interior in the first minute of the video. There is your voice, the noise of the background (which includes the noise of the train) and the music. To my opinion your narration should be dominating, which is not the case, because the music is too loud, maybe even louder than your voice. Maybe it would be better if you lowered the volume of the music a bit, but it would be even better to simply eliminate it while you're talking. On the other hand it doesn't bother me at all while you're showing the scenery, especially as you don't eliminate the background sounds completely. I like your videos, otherwise I wouldn't criticize (only good things deserve some criticism). I hope I somehow managed to explain you mi point of view. All the best.
Hi Max, thanks for the response. No it’s good to get feedback, good and bad. I normally try and respond either way and I do get what you mean now. So what I’m going to do is take on board your comments and try and get more clarity on the voice in future videos. There was a bit of an issue in the second part of this video where the noise of the passengers was louder than the train! So when I was talking I used some background music otherwise all you would have heard was people chatting. Sometimes it works out like that when the trains are busy. Always looking to improve mate so I do appreciate your thoughts. All the best and thanks again, Mark 👍😊
a well put together video, the grey weather gives quite a bit of atmosphere on the very interesting line.
Cheers KRF. I did think originally it would’ve been nice to do this in the Summer but tbh, I agree the grey skies did seem to accentuate the bleakness of the coastline in some parts.
