Whirling Dervish: The mystical dance of the Sufis: Ora and Ihab Balha at TEDxJaffa

- Опубликовано: 5 ноя 2012
- Ora Balha was always attracted to mysticism, and the ability of the body to be used as an instrument for spiritual communion. Trained as a dancer, Ora found her way to the Sufi path and has been whirling since 2007, in addition to teaching the art to others. Along with her husband, she also operates a coexistence center which brings together Palestinians, Israelis and Internationals, organizes conferences on nonviolence, runs an Arabic/Hebrew bilingual kindergarten in the Rudolph Steiner method, and manages an organic coop.
Ihab Balha is a Palestinian Arab who has been investigating Islam, and Sufism in particular, for many years. Trained in the Mevlevi order since 2007, he has been whirling ever since. With his wife, he is involved in many community projects, including Sulha Peace Project, as well as other efforts dedicated to reconciliation between Arabs and Jews. His main interest is to use Islam as a bridge between hearts. - Развлечения
If you got a body you will feel dizzy doing this but if you have soul you'll move till infinity.
That's amazing. Where did you hear this from?
Great said
Or you have got a body and a soul and you need to work them together where you don’t feel dizzy because you’re trained and because you’re soul is feeling it too.
From experience that's seem true. There is a sense of "nothingness" while whirling, a powerful centering technique. The whiler becomes the whirling.
Indeed...❤️
Beautiful, it brings me to tears. With all the hate and division in the world right now we need more of this. More love. More unity. More understanding. To realize that we are all one. We are brothers and sisters in one human race. Sending love to all of you.
It really brought me to tears , could it be a way to reach oness and unity?
😇😍
Interesting to know that this can bring someone to tears.
That's deep bro. And here all I was thinking was damn, that must make one dizzy.
@@goldentome7653 it is... It's a way to reach peak of consciousness.. there's a mechanism behind it that's why the Sufi master jalaluddin mewlana rumi and shamz ee Tabriz left it behind as a practice to follow...
In response to the statements that this is "just a performance": allowing others to witness the nakedness of the soul that is worship, or prayer, or meditation may appear to be 'performance.' It is much more. It is invitation; it is instruction; it is a door, opening for others; it is love; it is divine love. Whether or not one agrees with the beliefs and doctrines of those who are so open, the beauty of another's spirituality should be respected. I know little to nothing of Sufi beliefs; I know what it is to worship publicly. May the day come soon when how we worship, when whom or what we worship, is far less important than the simple fact that we do worship, and in that commonality, may we find peace for humankind.
yes amen agreed suzana!
peace without Truth.... that's an allegory...
You are speaking of theoretical love not real love.
the allegorical... just symbolizes desire but it will NEVER produce true peace which is rooted in love. Which btw real love.. corrects.. exposes..teaches... and ultimately binds together.
yes, it's movement that transcends the self and ego, connect with the cosmic
Beautifully written!

I had the very great privilege of hosting Ihab and Ora Balha and their family at the Shalom Festival Edinburgh. 2017. I was blown away by the grace and transcendent beauty of Ora’s Sufi dancing and I have been a devotee ever since.
It bring me tears. I watched it after reading Rumis poets and about sufis and their mysterious dance. Every move has a meaning and the whole dance has a point. Its like meditation. Rumi said that he found God in his drunkenness and dizziness.
Yes precisely, there are many kinds of this sort of mystical practice, it’s like a sensory overload or deprivation depending on how you want to look at it, designed to encourage a mystical experience, or feeling the cosmic oneness all around us that we call God, or Allah, or Brahman.
The human body is an incredible thing and through certain practices our senses become aware to everything they were previously blind to, it’s not that we find god in these moments it’s that we forget how to see god with our normal senses.
The galaxies spin, the solar system spins, the earth spins, our molicules and atoms have fields that spin, children spin. Just feels right sometimes.
And we circle around the kaaba . This creates an immense amount of magnetic energy same with when you are whirling
It's not a dance , it actually is a form of meditation ....I wonder how they don't get dizzy doing this
Tiffany Fichtenbaum
These are not sophisticated people, getting dizzy is the “meditation”.
Form of manifestation!!!!!!!!
Concentration on love makes it happen.. if u wanna watch the pure sufi whirling you might wanna watch this --dervish dance -- but its not a dance though
hours of practice for years
I would get dizzy so quickly
This video is Sufi mysticism demonstrated elegantly in its connection with the body and soul through whirling, which is a form of meditation to seek the ultimate truth of the universe.
Had so much anger in my heart from recent events. As soon as I saw you with your hands on your hearts, that all dissipated. I am saving this video, to help me get back to inner peace as needed in 2021. Very grateful for you.
Wishing you strength on your journey. 🙏 your comment made the 10 minutes more physically real than esoteric. It prompted me to reflect on why I clicked on this video in the first place. We're both from different cultures judging by your name ( I'm North African) but I think our goal may be more similar than different. Best of luck to both of us!
Hope that journey is going well, sister. Mr Rodgers, from the children's tv show, once said that as a child he asked his mother what he was supposed to do during times of deep stress and chaos. Tragedy. She answered her young son then, "Look to the helpers". Whenever you get overwhelmed, remember to look to the helpers. The responders, the rescuers, the volunteers, etc. They will help guide you through the events yourself.
Finally I found a whirling video that honors and includes women in this practice.
Thank you! 💛
I feel this so hard
This is so very beautiful. The music is beyond anything I've ever experienced. It's like another dimension of soul that I didn't know existed.
im in tears.... especially as ive just finished reading elif shafak's 40 rules of love. so beautiful and so sad ... . 😥😥
OmG same here
I am currently reading the book and I've already started to listen to sufi music, and I am trying to understand it better.
One of the best books i've ever read
I am in love .... with sufism after reading fourth rules of love♥️
I am here after reading the book too!
came here as nondenomination at all, interested in Islamic music, Australian guy bought up Anglican, into jazz and hiphop, this music and performance is one of the most intensely spiritual things I've ever seen
Patrick Emery I'm a lover of music as well and music is what brought me here. Read about Rumi and his work. There are some videos with some beautiful music and Rumi's words.
You can't perceive spiritual matters with physical eyes. It's just so.

Abruptly I am in tears watching them both even only whirling. It's spiritual.
Thank you, same!! I cried. I was looking for a video to show a friend. I learned about Sufism from Coke Studio, Rohail Hyatt(the producer). He has incredible Sufi songs. My fav Sufi singer is Sanam Marvi. Please, please watch her songs. 🥺🥰 They are another level of beauty. Some other recommendations would be "Khabaram Raseeda", I listened to this song constantly while pregnant. It's so good. 😭🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad I'm not alone. There's no way it's only us crying 😂❤ This was better than I expected, having come from Tedx lol, tbh! Very beautiful & spiritual performance. Pleasantly surprised & very touched. 🥺
What kind of level she must be on for spinning to such an extent where she had lost connection to the world and somewhere more soothing ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I had an experience of swirling with my eyes closed, on my bed today. I was drawn to this video for several days now. And it is my absolute favourite on youtube. I feel my body is made of love 💚
Muslims man.....they've captured the essence & power of what it means to be in the presence
💜💜👏🏽
Most Muslims think this is Haram.
@@bilkishchowdhury8318 no we don’t we just refuse to say that this is some sort of praying to god. Some people take this (sufism) to another level where they start jumping and stuff and say thats prying. So no we don’t say this is harm nor think its harm we just refuse to refer that to praying.
@@mowafi4222 This is haram, music is haram, this is bidah (innovations done to the religion by these people
What a beautiful whole mind, body and the soul’s expression of joy. This can bring healing on so many levels.
I thank God for bringing Rumi and Sufism into my life.
Same
May Allah guide you
Pisslam?
I thank Allah for not...
Rumi was a kafir. Period. Read what he believed then come back
most gracious whirl i have seen to date....and I've seen a LOT! Well done Ora...!
This touched my soul and made me weep tears of joy. So beautiful.
They asked to Rumi, why you are whirling like a mad? He told I looked to smalest things they are whirling, I looked to biggest things they are whirling and praying and I just joined them.
Well it's technically not part of Islam
@@omarfarique6304 it IS. You just need more deep knowledge to know IT IS.
@@aaraviii
It is? Show me the verse of the Quran or the Hadiths which states this is what Prophet Mohammad (SAW) or the Shabas did. This is Bidah. All Bidah leads a person away from Islam
Sheitan made it beautified in the eyes of those who can't see the right path. Astagfirullah.
People saying Ora and Ihab are not Muslims. That's not really for anyone else to decide, except them and Allah, is it? Worry about yourselves.
Diesel Dawg I agree
Doesn't work that way. The Companions would judge people if somebody did not show signs of faith and belief in Islam they'd make be called kafirs. Likewise Umar (ra) said "we judge by what's apparent and leaves what is inner to Allah." meaning that when one shows such blatant disbelief and innovation we can judge however only Allah can guide them and forgive them. Sufism does not have a single root to the message of Islam; "Every innovation leads to failure and it leads to the fire" was what Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said about the above twirling. Numerous Sufi groups have fabricated works to make out that what they do is correct but it is far, far away from that.
Meaning Ora and Ihab ARE kafirs
Muslims wouldn't bow down to each other, if you had knowledge of Islam. Don't guess, learn what things are.
"Say (O Muhammad): Come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord had made sacred duty for you: that you ascribe nothing as partner unto Him and that you do good to parents, and that you slay(kill) not your children because of poverty -- We provide for you and for them -- and that you draw not near to immorality whether opened or concealed. And that you kill not a life which Allah had made sacred , except in the course of justice. This He had commanded you , in order that , you may reason" [Quran- Surah Al Anam, Verse152]
One of the interesting parts of this "whirling" is that they always keep their left foot on the ground at all times. They may shift from heel to toe but they always spin on their left foot. From my understanding, this is how they stay grounded and connected to God, through the Earth with their foot, and His creation (the Earth).
Islam is such a beautiful divine religion.
Particularly the religion of Prophet Mohammad and his household. You can feel this joy & bliss without dancing and music.
this is haram
Grounded and ethereal at the same time. Beautiful!
so beautiful... sometimes the great speech was never being spoken through worldly languages, it's being spoken through soul language!
Beautiful soul , music, dance and meditation. So much elegance ! God's blessings 🙏🙏🙏
wow!...loved it...there were no words..still so much grace....and beauty...absolute pleasure...loved it
mama earth whirling and whirling, giving and giving and the moon forever captured by her beauty
I love sufi music first time I saw sufi dance😝😍 She is dancing in pure Bliss. It's better to love God. You stay so happy 😊 No matter how many people doing the same thing you can do it in ur own way. I loved it superb 👏 💯
Mesmerizing. As if she was really connected to Divine Presence, getting his sublime blessing and scattering it mercifully like the rain to humankind.
The man did not have a headscarf. Too beautiful to be covered, perhaps he thought. Though, only to Divine Being belongs the complete beauty. This is what I know from the teachings of mystics.
It seems the message is, how connected we can be to each other with just a dance, religious or no religion
It makes you appreciate life regardless.
Imagine, what our ancestors went through, so we all could enjoy this.
Dancing is how i also love to connect to the Divine Source, as i offer up my worship, prayers and gratitude to Allah.
TaMaMa KEY
But where did ALLah ask us to do this Sufi stuff ?
Mohy Aldin Allah may not have told me but for me this has been the best way to connect to my creator. For you it may be different
Waaris Rafiq
Now the real question is: Did God tell us how to Worship Him in His Holy Book & His messenger ?
Like Charity, Fasting, Taking care of Orphans, ...etc
Wouldn't it be a shame if we disregard everything God told us & disobey Him into inventing ways we think is even better than what God asks us to do & instead we just spin right round, Right round like a record, Right round round round ?
You do what you think is right and let us do what we want. I other words, mind your own business
Sikhs tell Muslims to pray to Allah but do it throw love and connection , if u get that from love of dancing to connect. Then do it !
Such divine elegance and love. It brings me to tears
I was half expecting her to knock down the TEDx letters the whole time. Not sure if disappointed.
lol ditto
No she wouldn't because dervishes are taught to stay centered and in place
God is love.
thank you for posting this.
So soothing..... I really want to experience this sort of ecstasy
The 40 rules of love brought me here😂🖤
It really is just beautiful to watch, it makes me feel peaceful.
The most beautiful dance ever. Watching this I felt love and light in my heart.
I cried Idk why but I cried... Love the old Turkish 🇹🇷 culture love from 🇵🇰 🇳🇱 ❤️❤️❤️
Sufi Islam had always been the most expressionistic school of Islam for me
Me who was constantly watching her moves. My heads going out of mind, how she does it with beautiful pace and rhythm. 💚🖤❤
❤So beautiful and peaceful to watch thank you. what a great couple ❤ I loved how I felt connected to the love
Know Sufism (Sufi) has two pillars, namely istiqamah with Allah SWT and harmony with His creatures. Thus whoever istiqamah with Allah SWT, behaves well towards others, and socializes with them politely, then he is a Sufi - Al-Ghazali
Sufism is misguidance . Allah created us to worship Him alone without any partners . He commanded us to follow the Prophet Muhammad (May peace and blessing be upon him). It is as simple as that . These dances were not from the Prophet or his companions . If you want good for yourself . Search for the truth even if it is against yourself .
So are we just gonna conveniently ignore every other thing god has commanded us to do? Pray, fast, hajj etc. Wallahi its shaitaan you please with this shirk and biddat
@@abdullahahmed7781 Sufis are muslim who pray and fast like you do, stop spreading intolerance on a subject you don't understand.
@@elgr240 Sufis worship allah and follow the prophet like muslims, because they are, and you comment is in ignorance of that.
@@Xelann my brother, they literally associate partners with Allah. Yes they pray to god but they pray THROUGH someone who lived a long time ago. Do you not realise jow close that is to the arab pagans before islam? They also believed in one god. But belived that you had to pray through "smaller" gods to reach the one god. May Allah guide us all
Thank you, a Beautiful dance.
This woman is in love with her Rabb-her Lord, her God. Beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like it.

The love of God make one in deep trance, hand toward the sky is about love of absolute. Alhamdulillah
BeaUTIFUlly meditative. Thank you
you do realise they are moslim and their god is NOT the God of Abraham isaac and Jacob. What is it you think they are meditating on exactly?
ken cole Quran chapter 16 verse 123 "Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth".
Now either you are just speaking out of ignorance or you are deliberately lying. Jesus would not be very proud of you either way. Don't let hatred for a people cause you to utter falsehoods. Please try to be a bit.... Christlike.
Meditation doesn't belong solely to christians.
Stan Lee It doesn't matter which God you believe in. The point of Sufism is to bring you closer to your creator whoever that may be.
@@diesel_dawg Christians don't even have meditations. Christianity lost its mystical forms due to its rigidity

This is so sacred. Thank you God for showing me such a divine method for calling in the Holy Spirit. I'd love to visit Arabian countries and enjoy their rich music, dance, sacred visual art... It is all so captivating

am out of words 😍
This is called Trance-Meditation. It shows a deep level of being where one can tap into the inner-stillness of the spirit and bypass the confines of mind/body.
In trance you are no longer in control, god is in control, so to speak. When this occurs, you rest while god heals you. Simplest way i can put it.
God doesn't need you to dance to music to get closer to him. Worship God as the prophet (pbuh) did.
@@user-yp7ke4et7o You don't need to do anything ultimately but it might take you 100 years. These are more easier methods to get into god state, dance, meditation, nature, yoga, sacred plants ect..
@@truesight91 in other religion maybe but not in islam. The prophet was very clear and strict about innovation in islam. You think Allah doesn't know how his creation can get near him? Then he wouldn't have told us to pray 5 times in the quran. Dancing and music are haram/prohibited in islam and they are doing exactly that. Listening to some trance music and whirling around may feel surreal and spiritual but so does taking drugs. As our beloved prophet(pbuh) said "a person is nearest to Allah when he's at prostration in salah" so why search for other options when theres already a way which is far greater than any medication? The shaytan is playing with their minds and leading them away from Allah and these people don't even realise it. If you are not a muslim, these whole dance thing may look appealing to you but just so you know this has nothing to do with islam. We muslims don't compromise about anything islam because Allah says in quran that He has perfected islam for us, so we mustn't add of throw away anything for whatever reason.
@@user-yp7ke4et7o Listen to Rumi/Sufi bro they are true islam. Modern quran and religion have been distorted by hands of man.

Thought I do not agree with everything with many sufi orders. Saying than I can also say, I see nothing here that goes against Islam.. Sufism is part of Islam just as same as for Salafism is also part of Islam. Doesn't matter If u claim Sunni, Shia or Ibadi.. Everything starts with intention. So have good intention and help humanity, transcend!!
Right. I am shia and homosexual. As I am aware I can't find my Gay love because it's Haraam so through Sufism I have found my Real LOVE...ALLAH IS MY LOVE.
Let's be Good Making sajdah to eachother was something that went against Islam. That was really it though... 👍
Ali Adat Allah make it easy for you, ameen.
If I killed someone who was depressed and my intention was to end their pain, I still killed someone. Intentions matter, but not when committing haram. Sufism is NOWHERE in the sunnah of our prophet, the quran or the hadiths. This is complete bid'ah(innovation), and this is haram. Just because sufism is part of islam doesnt mean they follow islam. Sufism has deviated from true islam, though alhamdullilah they at least worship Allah. Salam!
