  • Ora Balha was always attracted to mysticism, and the ability of the body to be used as an instrument for spiritual communion. Trained as a dancer, Ora found her way to the Sufi path and has been whirling since 2007, in addition to teaching the art to others. Along with her husband, she also operates a coexistence center which brings together Palestinians, Israelis and Internationals, organizes conferences on nonviolence, runs an Arabic/Hebrew bilingual kindergarten in the Rudolph Steiner method, and manages an organic coop.
Ihab Balha is a Palestinian Arab who has been investigating Islam, and Sufism in particular, for many years. Trained in the Mevlevi order since 2007, he has been whirling ever since. With his wife, he is involved in many community projects, including Sulha Peace Project, as well as other efforts dedicated to reconciliation between Arabs and Jews. His main interest is to use Islam as a bridge between hearts.

In response to the statements that this is "just a performance": allowing others to witness the nakedness of the soul that is worship, or prayer, or meditation may appear to be 'performance.' It is much more. It is invitation; it is instruction; it is a door, opening for others; it is love; it is divine love. Whether or not one agrees with the beliefs and doctrines of those who are so open, the beauty of another's spirituality should be respected. I know little to nothing of Sufi beliefs; I know what it is to worship publicly. May the day come soon when how we worship, when whom or what we worship, is far less important than the simple fact that we do worship, and in that commonality, may we find peace for humankind.

peace without Truth.... that's an allegory...
You are speaking of theoretical love not real love.
the allegorical... just symbolizes desire but it will NEVER produce true peace which is rooted in love. Which btw real love.. corrects.. exposes..teaches... and ultimately binds together.

Yes precisely, there are many kinds of this sort of mystical practice, it’s like a sensory overload or deprivation depending on how you want to look at it, designed to encourage a mystical experience, or feeling the cosmic oneness all around us that we call God, or Allah, or Brahman.
The human body is an incredible thing and through certain practices our senses become aware to everything they were previously blind to, it’s not that we find god in these moments it’s that we forget how to see god with our normal senses.

Doesn't work that way. The Companions would judge people if somebody did not show signs of faith and belief in Islam they'd make be called kafirs. Likewise Umar (ra) said "we judge by what's apparent and leaves what is inner to Allah." meaning that when one shows such blatant disbelief and innovation we can judge however only Allah can guide them and forgive them. Sufism does not have a single root to the message of Islam; "Every innovation leads to failure and it leads to the fire" was what Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said about the above twirling. Numerous Sufi groups have fabricated works to make out that what they do is correct but it is far, far away from that.
Meaning Ora and Ihab ARE kafirs

One of the interesting parts of this "whirling" is that they always keep their left foot on the ground at all times. They may shift from heel to toe but they always spin on their left foot. This is called Trance-Meditation. It shows a deep level of being where one can tap into the inner-stillness of the spirit and bypass the confines of mind/body.
In trance you are no longer in control, god is in control, so to speak. When this occurs, you rest while god heals you. Simplest way i can put it.

@@truesight91 in other religion maybe but not in islam. The prophet was very clear and strict about innovation in islam. You think Allah doesn't know how his creation can get near him? Then he wouldn't have told us to pray 5 times in the quran. Dancing and music are haram/prohibited in islam and they are doing exactly that. Listening to some trance music and whirling around may feel surreal and spiritual but so does taking drugs. As our beloved prophet(pbuh) said "a person is nearest to Allah when he's at prostration in salah" so why search for other options when theres already a way which is far greater than any medication? The shaytan is playing with their minds and leading them away from Allah and these people don't even realise it. If you are not a muslim, these whole dance thing may look appealing to you but just so you know this has nothing to do with islam. We muslims don't compromise about anything islam because Allah says in quran that He has perfected islam for us, so we mustn't add of throw away anything for whatever reason.

Sufism is part of Islam just as same as for Salafism is also part of Islam. Doesn't matter If u claim Sunni, Shia or Ibadi.. Everything starts with intention. So have good intention and help humanity, transcend!!

If I killed someone who was depressed and my intention was to end their pain, I still killed someone. Intentions matter, but not when committing haram. Sufism is NOWHERE in the sunnah of our prophet, the quran or the hadiths. This is complete bid'ah(innovation), and this is haram. Just because sufism is part of islam doesnt mean they follow islam. Sufism has deviated from true islam, though alhamdullilah they at least worship Allah. Salam!
