  • In May 1989 the GDR local elections take place. Up for election are the candidates of the Unity List of the National Front.
To vote for the candidates citizens leave the ballot paper untouched, fold it and throw it into the ballot box. By crossing all names out, a vote counts as a no.
In previous years, however, hardly anyone used the voting booth, well aware, that this could effect ones private life.
It is well known everywhere that a result has been set way long before the elections. Therefor, most citizens do not value the "elections" event very much. "Going folding" it is called in the vernacular. The results are hardly surprising.
But in 1989, the elections take a different course than expected. Citizens who are critical of the regime use the polling booths and cross out all names on the ballot paper. Other citizens observe the counting of votes in the polling stations from 6 p.m. onwards.
Later on it says, that 98.85 percent voted for the candidates of the National Front. A result that in no way matches the calculations of the election observers. This time it has been proven that the elections are being falsified.
