Border crossing between East and West Germany | GDR, FRG, 1970s

In 1973, as a result of the Basic Treaty between the FRG and GDR, the Eußenhausen/Meiningen border crossing was created as one of four new border crossings. It is located to the east in the Rhön low mountain range on the B19 federal road and was also opened for transit traffic to West Berlin. By 1990, over 1.5 million people had crossed the inner-German border here. Both longer-term visitors to the GDR and day travellers are processed here.
