In 1982, when The Bangles were still known as The Bangs and playing at Al’s Bar in Los Angeles, Music Connection concluded: “There is no question that all the elements are here to make the group one of the biggest draws around, and 1983 is theirs for the taking.” Sure enough, The Bangles were picked up in 1983 by Columbia records and released their first full album, All Over the Place, the following year. For vocalist and guitarist, Susanna Hoffs, the shift into the spotlight was profound. She explained the contrast to Goldmine in 2012 saying:
You go from the little bubble of your dreams, of musical aspiration, and all of this excitement and energy, and creating your sound and finding your communal voice as a band. Suddenly, you get signed and enter the business side of it. There are teams of people in suits, mostly men, and they are staring at you and sizing you up and trying to figure out what to do with you and how to sell you. You realize that your little bubble of creativity is no longer a little bubble. You’re out in the world, subject to a list of people’s opinions that you never thought you had to consider.
In spite of that pressure, Hoffs has maintained an infectious energy for music making and collaboration throughout her rich and diverse musical career. From The Bangles to Ming Tea (her faux-sixties Austin Powers band with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet), her Under the Covers volumes, with Matthew Sweet, with in her solo work and collaborative projects, Hoffs brings a fresh and enthusiastic voice to the popular music soundscape.
While The Bangles were Hoffs’ first step major musical success, she began her first band, The Unconscious, with David Roback (of Mazzy Star fame) while studying art at UC Berkeley. During her time in college, Hoffs’ studies in the arts were complimented by the late seventies music scene that surrounded her. From Talking Heads, The Velvet Underground and Patti Smith, to the last Sex Pistols performance at San Francisco’s Wonderland in 1978, Hoffs’ musical ear developed alongside her art studies. Hoffs reflects:
“I wanted to be an artist and I didn’t have a lot of boundaries around that. I studied dance and theatre and I ended up graduating with a degree in art…I painted, I made sculptures, I did photography…and I made a band…that band was just another thing that I made.”
While The Unconscious parted ways after graduation, both Hoffs (in The Bangles) and Roback (in Rain Parade) became active participants in the Paisley Underground scene of their hometown of Los Angeles, bringing that “art band” college experience with them: “The goal wasn’t to play a stadium, the goal was to get a gig at a club, you know, and be like the Velvet Underground at Andy Warhol’s factory and just be part of a happening.”
Hoffs and Roback had been childhood friends (and maintained that friendship until his recent passing in February 2020), but after a relationship that was both musical and romantic in college, Hoffs was ready to find a band without that added tension. Hoffs met Bangles bandmates Vicki and Debbi Peterson through an ad she had placed in The Recycler. From their first meeting playing in Hoffs’ garage, the band was formed.

If you could talk with any artist, who would it be, and why?
It would be really cool to hang out with Gerard Way, maybe play some D&D. I think he would like my songs.
She is so sweet .
Tony Levin. A journeyman musician who must have a million stories about creating music with my favourite artists like Lennon, Armatrading, Crimson, and even our Canadian boy Gowan! He'd probably have a more interesting perspective of Gabriel's career than Peter the introvert! And then there's the whole area of being a Stick pioneer... he must be a fascinating person. He's gone dark on social media since COVID hit--he's a guy who's lived his whole life on the road, so I really hope he's doing ok.
tom waits
Steven Wilson. He is a writer/producer and is just a very creative at sound design. To me when I first heard In Absentia album, it was an eye opener to me and so fresh from what was out at the time. He continues to put out some fantastic stuff. Also over all of these years he had done a lot of his music in his home studio himself and I believe he was pretty much self taught on audio engineering. Also he has a massive record collection.
Wow, beauty, talented and intelligent. A rare triple treat
Indeed! And Susanna's great too, haha.
Wow. Do you have blinders on. You musta had it bad in the 80s.
Susanna was in her early 60s at the time of this interview. Some people were blessed with good genes!!!!
She was stunning then and is stunning now, and such a sunshine personality. A big name from my childhood. Great interview warren
Thanks ever so much! Yes, a huge talent, very easy to work with and incredibly positive! All of the hallmarks of success!
I met Susanna at a a gig I played in LA. a few years ago, she was lovely.
@@matthewotooleis that’s wonderful to hear and doesn’t surprise at all!
@Rabid Badger She one of those very rare types of People who would look pretty good at the age of 100.
She's so pretty but I mmiss that 80s fluffy hair 😄🤙🤙
Still a 10 in my books. Always has been and I bet always will be. Love her music and angelic voice. Grew up listening to the Bangles.
Absolutely agree with that. She has always been a 10 and still is. Talented, intelligent, and beautiful. A rare combination. I must add a beautiful person as well.
I don’t listen to or care much about the new current day artists. I lived through an era that had the best music ever. Nothing compares to that era.
Manic Monday is one of those few songs I never get tired of. It’s just a perfect recording in every way.
I think Susanna was every straight guys imaginary girlfriend back in the 80s. She is still rocking hearts.🎵
She is one million per cent
Best of the best
Susanna Susanna Susanna.
Susanna Hoffs at 61 looks more healthy and youthful than a lot of women in their 30s....
Wow stunned. In my late 30s and can confirm.
She’s 61? So at 71 I still have a chance?
@@smokinmoose2 no-no i do @ 67....dying my hair tonight...lol

Being vegetarian for 30 years seems to work! We should all try. She is so beautiful
No surprise she is so successful with her awesome attitude...what a gem of a girl
Yes, incredibly supportive and talented person
Agreed. Things always work out for people like that. Your founding bass player leaves to do Country/Punk and you get Michael. Michael retires and you call back up Annette and is like; would you want to come back? Sure. 30 years later. And the chemistry is still great. Watching them do that 2019 KAABOO concert that you can see right here on RUclips, they all still sound amazing. She's right, the chemistry is still amazing. And they've been doing this for 40 years now. I mean, that's an amazing accomplishment.

I am so impressed with Suzanna Hoff. After watching and listening to this interview. She is not just extremely talented, she is Real. Intelligent, full of true love for her music, her life, her family including her band, coworkers, and the artists before her and during her exceptional career to this day. I have the deepest respect for her even more now after listening to her story. Thank you.
Beautiful house as well
Thanks ever so much for sharing Ray!
Susanna
I cannot believe she's 63!"....like WTF 😳 she looks so beautiful!"😍 and still sounds Amazing!!"😍
What a gorgeous lady and so, so talented.
I have nothing intelligent to say here. I just love her.
Same here!! LOL!
seems a pretty smart comment to me
Yup!🫶🏽
This was the remark of a highly intelligent person!
That’s the same low IQ post I was going to make
She is sunlight I swear. You can't help but smile when you see her. Beautiful face and a lovely soul.
What a beautiful intelligent, talented lady, pure class. The music world need more people like her. God bless...
She’s natural and real .
I had a crush on her way back in the day. Nice to see that she is still doing well and still is beautiful.
@@smitty9398 oh yess!
Smitty - correct. Some still burning, like an eternal flame...
😉🍻
Had? HAD?
Mate, she was my perfect girl back in the 80s, such a beautiful face.
Not much has changed since by the look of her, still a beaut.
YES! She has such a pretty face, and a pretty smile from her chocolate brown eyes to her luscious, full lips, and she's a woman who seems to be always smiling due to her outlook on life.
She's thoughtful and pays attention to the conversation, unlike many famous people who see themselves as above the lowly "regular" people.
She always had such a hot petite active body, and appears to still have that healthy, sexy body.
I always found her so attractive not just because of her looks, but because she is a musician, and an active artist, she's intelligent, confident but not aloof or condescending at all, she seems very nice.
Oh, DAMN! She used the word, "MYRIAD," and used it CORRECTLY! She just increased her attractiveness by 50% by that.
What a lovely, talented, beautiful lady.
Thanks ever so much!
She isn't pretentious. Very cool and a GREAT interview.
The fire in her eyes is now, and has always been, mesmerizing.
Her smile melts me!!
What a refreshing interview with a very well- spoken and vibrant, happy woman! I shouldn't be surprised by her vocabulary, but she comes across as a real adult while so many modern celebrities sound like overgrown children.
Thanks ever so much! Yes, Susanna is extremely talented and incredibly east to work with, driven, hardworking and agreed, very likeable!
Clearly intelligent and gorgeous, but as many Americans do, she says "like" too often.
@@johndonson1603 Yes, we know, America sucks and all other nations are far superior, blah, blah, blah. Get over yourself with this pointless comment.
@@johndonson1603 Really? That's your takeaway?
She's a totally class act from beginning to end from every angle.
Susanna Hoffs -I love you! Always have,Always will! Thank you for the music and heart palpitations.😉
Omg! I have always known she was talented creative and beautiful. Now I can see she's ageless and absolutely brilliant. Just listen to her articulate conversation style and her responses and sentences. It's just full of a brilliant gorgeous mind.
I'm not a fan boy of anyone, but I come damn close with her. The more I learn about her the more I become fascinated. I'm so glad she has shared her creativity and music with us for such a long time. Thank you Susanna!
She seems like such a sweetheart!
Susanna what a great voice and so beautiful. Great show.
Thanks ever so much
One of the most charming artists I have known in my long life!
Absolutely! Thanks ever so much
Awesome interview. She looks and sounds so natural, thank you for that trip back on her career
Glad you enjoyed it!
Susanna may be part of the reason I am married to my wife going on 25 years. As a young man I'd always be smitten with Susanna's side glance through that long curly hair. So when my wife did the same thing (not on purpose) on our first date my heart skipped a beat and we were definitely going to have a second date. I even wrote "Curly haired side glance" in a song about my wife.
That’s lovely Loren! I can tell you love your wife very much!
Good catch about the side glance. When I was picturing Susanna that's how I remembered her.
HAHA that's awesome. I had a girfriend that did that side glance too (she had the brown doe eyes) and it drove me nuts. Amazing how we can be smitten by the most subtle things.
@@funkster007 It's the subtle things that do all the smiting. :-)
@@L.Scott_Music Word!
She's just so happy, real, and likable. Great interview.
Thanks ever so much
her smile brightens even the darkest of places. such a joyful person
That's a lovely comment!
Loved her aside about "Groundhog Day" and life on the road. Indeed, while many aspire to be "Rock Stars", few realize how un-fun it is to live out of a suitcase and sleep in hotel/motel beds (if you're lucky) or worse (in the back of a van). She is still a good soul all these years later. Not a 'burn out' - and very pretty and vivacious. A special lady for sure.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Wonderful interview of a beautiful human being! What great energy Susanna has.....
Agreed! Wonderful person
@@Producelikeapro
That compassionate energy must be what keeps her looking so youthful. Amazing. You’re a lucky man to call her a friend. Thanks for your videos.....
Incredible woman..........eternal love from Italy.
She's still absolutely gorgeous 🥰
I love how her eyes light up when she speaks. Her music has been such an influence in my life.
Susanna is still soooo! BEAUTIFUL! in every way; she makes me spell words funny
She's awesome. Literally perfect.
Susanna. You are simply stunning, inside and out. Thanks for the music ! :-)
Such positivity. Suzanna is such a breath of fresh air in a negative world. Good interview.

Susanna Hoffs is such a beautiful woman, her talent and her special voice, the bangles made a huge mark!

Oh wow. I shouldn’t have watched this. Now the crush of my youth is back.
Such a great interview. Thanks to you both.
Such an enjoyable interview, Susanna is such a beautiful, appealing, interesting woman, with a smile that lights up a room.
Thanks ever so much
I have to be honest here, I've never heard Susanna Hoffs talk (that I'm aware of) and this interview is so inspiring and heartwarming. I've been watching music videos from some of my most favorite bands and I started getting a lot of Bangles recommendations and then this came up. I normally just hit the next button when an interview comes up between songs but I can't stop listening.
I don't know who the guy is doing the interview but I really enjoy the relationship that they have. Susanna seems so down to earth, intelligent, articulate, and a genuine artist in every sense of the word. I was struck by how much passion she has for music and I could only wish that I had something like that in my life. Both of them seem to have this amazing love for music. Listening to this just made me feel good and that's something I think we all need right now.
Wow! That's such a beautiful comment Andrew!! Thanks ever so much!! Yes, Susanna is a one of kind artist, the real deal and a great human being!
Susanna is an amazing and intelligent woman ! I love her songs, I love watch her playing the guitar. She's so humble but such a STAR !!!
Agreed 100%!
@@Producelikeapro I have a question : where can we find HQ-pictures of Susanna when she started with the Bangles? On Pinterest the pictures are minor quality.
Susanna is like a huge ray of sunshine.

Her voice is forever burned into the give me the chills portion of my brain. Damn.. and that look… woof, she makes me smile.
If I wasn't crushing on her then I definitely would have started crushing on her now. My only regret is I never got to see the Bengals perform live. Love them since the beginning. Totally incredibly difficult to believe she is over 60. Still remember her dancing around in the All Nighter and she looks the same. Just a beautiful woman. Keep on rocking Susanna!
Same regret. I've been fan for years and finally got concert tickets for The Bangles and then COVID cancelled it. I've been crushing on Susanna for decades. I'm more attracted to her now than ever.
Saw The Bangles a lot when they first came to London around 85, they were a great live band and really rocked. They did some amazing covers live, The Seeds, Love, Alex Chilton. Great interview, she is so down to Earth.

Super interview, love the honesty and the interaction. Super.

Oh God, I love this girl... she looks super excellent like old days.
Thanks, Warren. What a delight she is. So positive, hilarious and enthusiastic. A real treasure. I never would have anticipated a Bangles show would be among my favorite concert experiences but it was. At Slims in San Francisco in, probably, 2014. Very small crowd. I was transfixed.
