Thanks for giving us great tackle info and I always enjoy them! For your info, Free rig originated from Andong, South Kore some 15 years ago unlike other finnese rigs gaining popularities followng uses on US tour circuits. It has been gaining popularities amongst Japanese anglers in recent years though. It was deveoped in Andong by some bass anglers who fished the lake Andong heavily due to the unique structural character which required fast sinking rig for bass suspended in deep waters there. Top Japanese pros like Namiki Toshinari and hot Japanese youtuber like Hata Takuma also introduced the origin of the rig recently on their channels.

    • @thehookuptackle_usa

Thank you for the info. I’m aware of the origin, but I consider this a Japanese technique, since it is the most popular finesse technique in Japan and it drives the JDM finesse industry, and that’s what US anglers are interested in 👍.

sure we all know its originated from korea but japanese pros put a lot of emphasis on it and made it popular in recent years. lets be honest, a lot of anglers in korea dont even understand what free rig does different, they just use it everywhere cause its what they all use and work.

Usually I get a couple different sizes of lead swivel sinkers, casting sinkers I think they are also called. I use this rig with all types of soft plastic lures and have success. Flukes, ribbon tail worms, craws, stick baits, and large grubs are what I use the most with this rig. Works well for me here in central/south east Colorado.

The Free-League is called the national league in Korea. If Japan has a Down-shot League, Korea is a Free-League.
The reason the Free-League is hot in Japan right now is that it is being used later than Korea.
You may have used the Free-League before. This is very easy and fast to set up.
Korea also uses the Texas League and Alabama League a lot. So is this made in Korea?
Every league knows that anyone can use it. But don't touch its origins.
If you are an expert, you need to pass the right knowledge on to people.

Going back and watching this again after my first year with the free rig. Everything is true about this technique. I put it through hell, kayak river fishing for smallies. No stopping, just hit and run every wood pile on the river. If you want to find out how snagless a technique is... river fishing is the truth. Out of thousands of casts I might have lost a dozen, maybe. I used it finesse with tiny worms on a 1/32 or 1/16 ounce weight. Its one year later and hundreds of fish caught...time to stock up for next season.

You say your jig/worm rod WILL work. Is that to say you’d throw this on casting gear? Or do you largely throw it on spinning gear so that it meets less resistance taking line off the spool?

You have by far the best instructional videos I have seen. I think Typigpatrol is the best fisherman on youtube, as far a breaking down the rigs and how to fish them....you got it.

I understand the rig is popular in Japan, but the origin is Korea and you should call it a Korean rig if you ever had any respect for the professional who made the rig. Btw, you'd NEVER find a Korean bass fisherman who doesn't know this rig. Idk how you got to think this rig is more popular in Japan. You should at least change the description to say that the rig was invented in Korea...

Have you used the Decoy Dan and Stick weights? I’m intrigued by them but can’t find any info other than they’re not lead but not tungsten? Do you know how size/density/sensitivity compares to tungsten? Sorry for so many Q’s lol

So what hook and size are you guys throwing the 3" dolive beaver on? I grabbed a pack from you guys but, I don't have a single hook small enough to fit it. I ended up using a straight shanked neko hook- but it has no keeper on it so my bait is continually sliding down. It looks like maybe a 1/0 cover shot would work- 2/0 is the smallest I have and it's almost right- the point goes through the very tip of the main body though, the head. That's making the bait to stiff really- I would prefer the front 3rd of the body to be hanging off the hook freely. Any advice would be greatly appreciated- from anyone. If you throw this bait, this size- help me out, please.

In one of your videos you were saying that j hooks with same line onto the hook point to the tying ring is not good. Why you recommend it into this application?
