I actually have a bootleg copy of hikaru no go anime DVD. I bought it second hand from a seller on facebook who probably bought it from overseas. It gave me an example of what to look out for when buying blu-ray and DVDs (multiple languages in the back is a big sign as well as different cover art). It did work on my DVD player but the quality is really bad.
As a Malaysian manga collector, this is true and very embarrassing. The sad part is... most of Malaysian did not realize they are buying bootleg mangas because some of them (the bootleg publisher) had an official store in several hypermall. Growing up, I used to buy lots of them and thought that they were legit. All the mangas are super cheap. Plus the quality are quite believe able (but not as good as the original copy, of course). They published popular manga and even had Blue Lock in english! Right now, Im doing my best to show support for the mangakas by buying the originals. This year, Im planning to showcase more original mangas in my youtube channel and hopefully to spread awareness about this serious issues among Malaysian. As a youtuber and a comic artist myself.

actually the real reason why all these bootleg publisher came out recently cause the actual legit licensed Malaysian publisher like ToraAman, ComicHouse, etc. closed down in 2017. also original manga by Viz cost like $12-$20 in Malaysia. Since our GDP is garbage compared to american (minimum wage in Malaysia is like $250 a month for a full-time job, 8 hour a day, 6 day a week), it's really hard for the average peoples to buy the original one. they need to figure out a way to make the manga cheaper. maybe open a printing store in Malaysia so they can make the price cheaper. cause they can get same quality printing materials for like 4x cheaper in Malaysia.

Honestly, if something is that far out of print and unavailable digitally/someone wants a physical with no signs on reprints in sight, I say go for it. I am still probably gonna buy fake manga. But its because the manga that I want to buy are very very rare and you really just cannot find it in singapore. The two series are Real and Berserk

Straight up many of the popular manga bootlegs are iffy, but if they were making manga that were out of print or otherwise difficult to get like GTO and someone wanted to have a physical copy to read, I could see those bootlegs being at the very least interesting. That being said still definitely not for collectors.
Great informative video! I'll be sure to stay away. I've seen some individual volumes from Australia on eBay and I'm unsure if it's bootleg. Have you seen these and do you know?
Lmao ive seen these but luckily i can tell the difference but this is a good warning for parents or ppl that dont know buying manga as gifts for others.
Personally I think that these manga are not a bad thing. If you dont have that much money but still want to read popular series you should bnuy these. They are basically the same with a bit less quality.I know that you aren't supporting the mangaka but since manga normally is 10 bucks and you read it in 30 minutes I understand why people dont have money to buy them.If you just want to read the manga, you can buy these ones, they re almost the same but cheaper.
I pirate my mangas online, because i don't have the money. But whenever i have a lot of money i just spend it on buying real copy of a manga, rather than the bootleg ones. I would rather just not spend money tham buy a bootleg one. Buying a bootleg one means you lose money and you are not supporting the medium. But if you read it online(pirate it) you don't support the medium, but you also don't lose money.
Thanks for the info but it's sucks I just realized that I bought a fake chainsaw man manga, next time I'll make sure that I'm buying a legit manga In a legit store. Hey nice slamdunk manga collection

Really thoughtful and informative, as for me. I've bought 4 volume of attack on titan by tr media, around rm 11 per volume. I'm new to manga collecting and I thought that was legit and the price was reasonable since I used to buy gempak starz comics with that prize. And I've read the manga online first, but find some translation are different and I found out that it was not an official publisher. Now I'm planning to buy a new manga from book depository and it was legit. Around rm 40 more but I love the series so it'll be worth it

Viz is a US based publisher and different countries can have different publishers, which is very common in print media. So I am not sure if your information is correct or not.
All volumes in English for the corresponding are managed by viz for other languages you should know the main publishing group if it is the language you are buying in regularly anyway
Got scammed myself, sadly only know about it now after the fact, still in talks with ebay to get my money back, and probably cost them money on return shipping
I ended up getting my money back after a lot of hassle, he did not like the negative feedback I gave him, worst of it was the photos were of legit copies of the manga so I never knew until they arrived
So I guess you aren't considering self printed manga as being a bootleg. In reality it still is considered a bootleg. The people who self published it dont have the rights to publish said manga. That Eden is a endless manga you had bought, what was it like a year ago is a bootleg manga. There is no gray area or difference when it comes too buying bootleg vs self print at all.
Never thought I see PromG talking about fake manga in Malaysia. Well I live in Malaysia and have been a victim of those fake manga. When I first buy I realized that those fake manga actually had low quality and when I started buying from Kinokuniya which sells original manga, you can see the difference of quality.
Also here in Malaysia we have no any Barnes and Nobles or Booksamillion like you guys in US. We have local bookstore that sells quite limited manga. Like really limited. The only bookstore that sells a huge title of manga is Kinokuniya which is not a local bookstore.
Nope they don't the only publisher that have attained the right in malaysia is kodakawa asia / gempak starz the other like tr media and wos official are 100% illegal also official manga isn't that hard to attained here anyway u can buy them at kinokuniya and book depository
Real talk I got got. However...........I am actually not even mad. I have never bought a manga before and was looking for a box set of chainsaw man since part one finished like two years ago. I couldn't find a viz or shonen version so I started looking on ebay and I found what I thought was a limited version. Scalping is very much a thing and with the anime coming I figured it was people who bought the manga boxes in bulk and are reselling them. I really like chainsaw man and the shipping was in the US so I thought it was safe. Well I posted on reddit about it and people I formed me that it was a fake. That being said, the quality for mine is actually really good. The box is really nice. It came with 4 prints, and the quality in comparison to the original is pretty much indistinguishable. I l ow because I went to a books a million and checked with a few of their individual volumes they had there.
i ordered tomie from amazon and i got it today it was fake ofcourse i knew it as soon as i held it in my hand pages were thin and ink was bleeding through tomie is spposed be more thick than uzumaki i had it i compared tomie with uzumaki tomie was thinner that conformed it

it sucks people are actually buying these and it’s even worse i can’t buy chainsaw man 2 without spending literally over $100
Komi san volume 1 was 45 dollars the other day on amazon. I'm sad to hear its happening to chainsaw man too.
They did this with the masterpiece "Monster"! Had the label KL-Jump 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 what. The. Fuck. Is. Kl. Jump. It sounds fake. Especially because they tried to copy a name basically.
I'll probably stick to buying comics more than mangas now as the first manga I've bought was bootleg and also the real ones are very expensive too. Comics are very cheap so I'll stick to it because I'm still a high schooler
Me watching this from Malaysia 🤦♂
I wish I knew this after I made an order in Shopee, I didn't knew this and now a Fake volume of Hell's Paradise is about to arrive and it says it was published by KL and I regret not knowing this, I'm pretty pissed at myself bc I couldn't support the creator but I supported the fake, man I'm pissed at myself
That’s not very cool, cool guy.
I am still probably gonna buy fake manga. But its because the manga that I want to buy are very very rare and you really just cannot find it in singapore. The two series are Real and Berserk
Just bought a copy of Spy Family volume 1, only to notice it is different compared to the other volumes of Spy Family that I already have. Googled the differences and realised I have a bootleg copy on my hand *sigh*
Initiated a return/refund and left a bad review on the seller page.
Link a listing and I’ll check it out
People have been going crazy over manga, ur mailman tried to take ur hunter x hunter set and now people are selling fake manga🤦♂️it’s crazy
It’s a mad world out there man
@@ThePromG yup
@@ThePromG wait tell me about your mailman wtf 😭
Lmao ive seen these but luckily i can tell the difference but this is a good warning for parents or ppl that dont know buying manga as gifts for others.
i was just about to buy these, but saw this video. Thank god
Initial D is stupid expensive.
I’ve been thinking about buying a complete manga series from Malaysia just to have it in my collection.
low key thinking about buying beck from Malaysia, someone from manga collectors subreddit posted it, and the quality was great, hmmmm🤔
Personally I think that these manga are not a bad thing. If you dont have that much money but still want to read popular series you should bnuy these. They are basically the same with a bit less quality.I know that you aren't supporting the mangaka but since manga normally is 10 bucks and you read it in 30 minutes I understand why people dont have money to buy them.If you just want to read the manga, you can buy these ones, they re almost the same but cheaper.
my friend fell for this and he bought a Tokyo ghoul box set that was from TR media because it was cheaper than the official one
Do the fake ones have the real manga on the inside though?😂 like the real pages panels and text in all the right order
Haha yeah they will but sometimes it will be censored or a different translation
I wonder if viz media or seven seas etc would do something if these stores were reported. Really wonder
Me when I make like $20 off of two slices of pizza
Dude what!? How did you get that print of Eden!? I need that for my collection haaa
Thanks for the info but it's sucks I just realized that I bought a fake chainsaw man manga, next time I'll make sure that I'm buying a legit manga In a legit store. Hey nice slamdunk manga collection
Which publisher ? WOS? Then it doesn't suck lol.
Great I have trust issues now 😃
Manga shouldn't have blown up the way it did, sad to see this happen. Remember I got bullied for liking manga and anime in the 90's and early 2000's. Now these bullies are into it..
That’s what I’m sayin. All the people who made fun of me for liking anime and manga act as if they’ve always liked it 😐😐
Boo boo hipster
As a Malaysian-American, I apologize for my people 😂
Really thoughtful and informative, as for me. Around rm 40 more but I love the series so it'll be worth it
People bootleg manga now😔😔
Luckily it's easy to tell the difference for now, but that could change in the future...
Is nothing sacred? I hope my Tokyo mewmew copies I just ordered are legit.
@@yunogasai1338 is it from WOS?
@@thomasjensen3403 I don't think so. They're copies from kodansha USA. One of them never made it to my house though. I bought one for a friends birthday and one for me. I'm hoping to get my own copy soon. Maybe I'll have better lyck next time.
I bought my favorite series off of ebay a month ago and found out it was bootleg
Viz is a US based publisher and different countries can have different publishers, which is very common in print media. So I am not sure if your information is correct or not.
All volumes in English for the corresponding are managed by viz for other languages you should know the main publishing group if it is the language you are buying in regularly anyway
These publishers in Malaysia don't have the license to publish those mangas.
@@KamenRiderOtaru True!
@@le563 How long did it take you to get your money back?
So I guess you aren't considering self printed manga as being a bootleg. In reality it still is considered a bootleg. The people who self published it dont have the rights to publish said manga.
That Eden is a endless manga you had bought, what was it like a year ago is a bootleg manga.
There is no gray area or difference when it comes too buying bootleg vs self print at all.
The most popular manga that got bootleg definitely is chainsaw man,jjk and aot
Never thought I see PromG talking about fake manga in Malaysia. Well I live in Malaysia and have been a victim of those fake manga. When I first buy I realized that those fake manga actually had low quality and when I started buying from Kinokuniya which sells original manga, you can see the difference of quality.
Also here in Malaysia we have no any Barnes and Nobles or Booksamillion like you guys in US. We have local bookstore that sells quite limited manga. Like really limited. The only bookstore that sells a huge title of manga is Kinokuniya which is not a local bookstore.
@@hafizuddinaznam3524 you can try do comparison wos vs the original manga
Whts the difference between fake and authentic manga pls
so where exactly do I buy slam dunk complete in english? amazon does not have it and ebay is only malasia if you want new the rest are used
i wanna buy bleach manga but idk where to find the original one, i can't afford to buy the box set ☹
The question is are the panels real. Like its 1:1 and the translation is copied from the real one
Most of the time they are the same, however actual panel resolution is often off. So is centering and framing of the panels on the page in general
Disappointment to man kind😞
Ikr I thought it would never come to this
but what if in Malaysia these publishers have attained the rights for Malaysian markets?
Nope they don't the only publisher that have attained the right in malaysia is kodakawa asia / gempak starz the other like tr media and wos official are 100% illegal also official manga isn't that hard to attained here anyway u can buy them at kinokuniya and book depository
How do they legally get away with it?
What if a illegal Institute provide better page quality that original manga what to do
Thank you
i ordered tomie from amazon and i got it today it was fake ofcourse i knew it as soon as i held it in my hand pages were thin and ink was bleeding through tomie is spposed be more thick than uzumaki i had it i compared tomie with uzumaki tomie was thinner that conformed it
JUST GOT SCAMMED 💀
Salam...
Actually its only for sale within Malaysia..
wanna ask u..sir..
Did u ever live at Msia? ?... Did u ever think how we are manga n manhua reader n collector try our best to read it in original way ( books) beside read it from online source... Did u ever think , if we were buy it from overseas then the customs will giving it freely fly through us without any highly costs....
In here, there are no original publisher did its translations from rights publisher.. so.. but we wanna read...just read n touch it.. smell it.. yeah..u got u rights to speak up.. n yeah mangaka have a rights to summon under illegal copyrights publishing.. BUT WE WANNA READ IN THAT WAY... If we have a choice.. we will choose that one which support the copyrights owner...
( Sorry for my break out langguage typo)...
TQ for review..
I didnt think i can read it in originals way...without translations 😁😁😁😁😊
Still salah dan jenayah, bro.
So.. we are.. not including you... We are the smooth criminal.... Then ..so.. just read it from internet for free.... U happy.. i m happy.. everybody happy... But original mangaka, publisher n writer very2 disappointed... huh...
N.. who is Najib? in this matter? if 'Bossku' didnt bring up that GST.. didnt u think the PM after him will bring it up to.. with the other name..SST🤣.. or ZST n other... We are talking about COMICS n nothing about politics n economies.. we are talking about READER n Reading Source...
If VIZ can print it n sold it outside kino that was the best i can think...
@@sahirulizanbinyusopkpm-gur3720 It doesn't matter which store you end up buying it. VIZ is the one who decides the price tag. You still have to pay RM30-50 for a volume of manga published by VIZ even if it is sold in MPH or Popular or any kedai buku tepi jalan. Point aku ialah masa Comics House dan Tora Aman beroperasi dan jual komik Jepun dengan harga RM5-8 dulu, takde orang nak support, bila diorang dah bungkus pergi pulak support bisnes-bisnes haram yang print buku tanpa lesen sah. Tak faham aku. Anyway, aku takde la kaya, gaji cukup makan je, tapi aku still boleh beli komik dekat kino tu. Jangan kedekut sangat untuk hobi.
You say Amazon is safe, but it isn't anymore. It's filled with fake listing and bootlegs now sadly
As long as you buy from the official Amazon storefront you’ll be fine, but yeah I hear third party sellers on there sell fakes now
where’s the best place to find old prints of volumes in bulk? i’m trying to get all of slam dunk like you got in the back..
Usually you would have to go over actor’s different sites, or you would have to pay more for out of print manga. For example Initial D and GTO are out of print and rare to find. Slam Dunk I’m not all the way sure but, I think it’s more rare

doesn't show the copy
Wait self printed is what a fake mange is ryt 😅 Mass printing is just people self printing it
i got vol 4 of chainsaw man but it's published by tr media
I’m still thinking about buying the English Tokyo Revengers manga’s from Malaysia.
Just buy it dude, WOS quality is amazing its have its own jacket (viz dont have jacket) but still decide on your own
What about stuff like Initial d? Its out of print so im thinking going this route
They have it in wos :)
Rip 💀💀💀
It's pretty weird to say this but i actually enjoy tr Media manga it's way darker lighter and smaller it's not that bad do and it's also cheaper
I literally just ordered manga for the first time and I just found out that it was fake. It cost me 240 dollars. I'm not exactly mad and I'm still gonna read it because I really want to know what happens in the manga that I'm reading but I just very annoyed about that I got scammed.
