Take a tape measure and go from the jam nut to the center of the outer tie rod. As long as you reuse the old jam nut that measurement will get you extremely close. Way better than counting threads
If you measure closely you can get within 1/16th of an inch of where the toe was set prior to repairs. Take a mental note of how your steering wheel is pointed going down the road before taking anything apart. If the steering wheel is in the same position or close to it after repairs your alignment is very close

@@firstlast--- Good to know. I've also seen people use jack stands and string. I assume the method you mention would be slightly more accurate though
