Replacing Tie Rods on my 1990 Oldsmobile 98
How to replace the inner and outer tie rods on my 1990 Oldsmobile 98. This applies to most C/H body cars of this platform from around years 1985-1991, and a lot of cars in general. It is still recommended to get an alignment after suspension work has been performed on a vehicle. I bought the Maddox Tie Rod Removal Kit at Harbor Freight.

TPS Calibration 3800 V6
Просмотров 2942 месяца назад
In this video, I'll show you how to calibrate your Throttle Position Sensor on this 3800 V6. The vehicle in this video is my 1990 Oldsmobile 98. This method applies to so many different vehicles, and is very easy to do yourself at home with a few basic tools. If your vehicle is OBD2, you may need to erase the trouble code with a scan tool to get rid of your SES light, if applicable.
CV Axle Replacement on my Oldsmobile 98 Regency

Replacing the CV Axle on my 1990 Oldsmobile 98. Applies to any other car of the same chassis and pretty much the same setup for most FWD GM cars. Constructive criticism is welcome if you have a better way to do it. Thanks for viewing.

Notes are in video. And before I get a bunch of bs comments about "left lane camping". First of all, it's not a highway, it's a city street. 2nd, there's a right lane closer ahead due to construction, which is why the cop did what he did instead of getting behind me where there was no one and I was already slightly speeding... I'm only annoyed because I KNOW my ass would get lit up doing that m...

Cooling Fan Diagnosis and Repair 1990 Olds 98
Просмотров 1945 месяцев назад
In this video, I'll show how I diagnosed my faulty cooling fan motor on my 1990 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Brougham. Be careful when messing with electrical. Jumping alligator clips from the battery to the fan motor burned my finger tips due to a short in the motor. I repaired the fusible link with an in-line fuse holder from Walmart, using a 25 amp fuse. Hope this helps.

I Bypassed the AC Compressor on my 3800 V6
I just found your video. I went out earlier when it was daylight. I did take that plastic cover off, but then just starred t everything failing to spot it behind that wiring . Thks. Now I know. I see your plug is diff. on the old's 98. and the whole resistor, looks like heat sinks, my is the 1990 Bonneville . I suspect in the daylight tomorrow I will find it now, in the same spot. Funny from one car to another by the same company they would make a diff plug and diff looking resistors. mine are "3'" diff. coil resistors no heat sink.
@janbill79 I pulled the old resistor out of my old 1990 Bonneville and it's exactly as you described with the coils. The difference comes down to whether your car is optioned with electronic climate control, or manual controls. My Bonneville had manual controls, my Olds has the fancy electronic controller. If you have electric climate control, you will have the resistor with the larger plug.
@@caayydenn oh, thats the difference! I totally forgot about the 2 different systems. As I also have a 1988 Buick Electra park avenue, so that's also out on that, Now that I think of it. It might only have a 2 speed fan so I always wasn't sure if low was on or not. that Buick suspension froze up for the winter I know that sounds funny but when the temp dropped the suspension in the rear quit working must water in the airlines like a semi would have with air brakes. Yeah I have that climate control thing in my Buick. For the first 2 years, ( bought it used couple years ago) I had it, I had no heat just turned out, it was low on anti freeze all that time. I was fooled by the plugged up plastic coolant tank showing full. I just didn't know what to think of the goofy climate control. So then, I'll see the, diff. looking fan resistor pack changing that one. If it gets above freezing I can start driving it again.
@janbill79 These cars are pretty simple compared to new stuff. Should be an easy diagnosis with a multimeter. I got lucky that my $10 junkyard unit worked. Still works to this day!
Looks like your right rear motor mount is shot or just filled with oil
@nonofyabusiness4780 Funny you mention that, as its definitely is full of oil. I'm sure the rubber is shot too. The seal on the trans appears to be leaking, flinging oil onto it. Probably also a combo of an old valve cover leak and old knock sensor leak. Luckily I found one on Rock Auto's wholesale closeout sale for like $2! Sitting in a box until spring or summer when I get around to doing it. Slowly cleaning this beauty up.
Are you willing to sell your rear left light or rent it to me just to pass my state inspection. Mine failed VA inspection for a crack in drivers left side (passed in PA). Been looking for one they are hard to find.
Let me ask you something do the bags fill up? Or there just for emergency? Because when my shocks was bad the compressor ran all the time. Now I replaced the shocks and new compressor rides awesome but the compressor or bags don't fill. Is that normal
@basilnegron9302 The bags do hold a small amount of air, but not much. It's more of ride "leveling" than air "ride" itself. The leveling sensor senses the level of height and kicks on the compressor when necessary to "top off" the bags. If the compressor is running constantly, you either have a leak in a line somewhere, or the leveling sensor is out of whack. The compressor will re level the suspension with the vehicle off as well. The previous owner of my car had the compressor unplugged because these ones leaked so bad and it was draining the battery while sitting.
@@caayydennok just wanted to know mine were leaking before it had a bad bag. But I rebuilt the whole suspension ball joints bags tie rods. As o am restoring my 89 oldsmobile. Oh new compressor too. Rides awesome just I don't feel air in bags like I use too. So there just there incase
@@caayydenn oh new springs too
I'd forgotten about the ashtray overkill. Loved this car, took it camping and slept comfortably in it rather than set up a tent. And the trunk space was incredible.
I just did this job on my 1990 delta, when I installed the new one it locked into place but didn’t seem to seat all the way, it doesn’t pull out but has a little bit of play where the inner axle connects to the transmission. Any idea what might be the problem ? I couldn’t find much online that addressed it
@@vaughnmarchione7663 A small amount of play is normal after the CV clicks into place. It's just the design. Once you put everything back together and have the axle nut tightened down it won't matter.
I was going to try this in a Walmart parking lot where, I coasted off the road into ( I had to do some pushing but we were close) . But I had no wrenches so I spent over $50 on some wrenches but had to return to buy a second socket set for the ones underneath the 11 mm or what ever they were. Can't have a adapter to a 3/8 drive (makes it too long). But then when O'Reilly's didn't carry the ICM till Monday and it's Sat. then I had to pay the tow guy $200 anyway. I have a 1990 Pontiac Bonneville/ This the first time it left me stranded. I like the ride. I'm just hoping it is that icm under the coil pack I don't want it to be a missing magnet on the crank sensor as it did die on a bumpy road.
Wow. Pure junk
Amazon I think
How does the magnet get installed? Does it just sit in there? Snap in what? I bought one and nothing is holding it just the magnetic force
Part of the reason I look up my own stuff when I can - using factory catalogs. Order them by OEM number and buy factory supplier
Who says “don’t go to part stores”… WTF are you talking about, part stores sell more than 1 brand. If you want a better part buy the better part
So true. They sell junk
When you buy the cheapest part that gets made in China.
Do you have part number for belt bypass ? My 88 Bonneville has non ac routing and ac routing combine decal but having issue finding belt without part number. .
Sorry for the late reply, I do not exactly. However the part #s are part of the measurement somewhat. I believe it started with "7325" something. As someone else stated, an '87 LeSabre with no AC option will work for a size as well. The auto tensioner takes care of the small size differences.
Bro bought the driveworks tie rods instead of just spending the money once on moog or better lol
A good friend of mine daily drives one of these. It's a really cool vehicle. Thanks for uploading!
get your stuff from rock auto, never trust advanced
Great job, I learned a lot.
I've had decent luck with precision parts from O'Reilly's just don't trust their master pro parts.
Lemforder, Febi, Swag, Meyle, Moog, Delphi, buy parts from OE suppliers. 2,3,4,5 years of guarantee
Are you a big fan of cardone & Detroit Axle? They are made in USA
Rock auto at least has a selection
Wax and oil the only thing worth buying from advance and auto zone.....sometimes.😢
Take a tape measure and go from the jam nut to the center of the outer tie rod. As long as you reuse the old jam nut that measurement will get you extremely close. Way better than counting threads
@@firstlast--- Good to know. I've also seen people use jack stands and string. I assume the method you mention would be slightly more accurate though
If you measure closely you can get within 1/16th of an inch of where the toe was set prior to repairs. Take a mental note of how your steering wheel is pointed going down the road before taking anything apart. If the steering wheel is in the same position or close to it after repairs your alignment is very close
I went all Mevotech on Rock Auto for the front end stuff on my Caravan. They are greaseable too. So far so good on em.
@MrAppalachia That's what I have for my outer tie rods. Took the chance with the ones Advanced had in stock for me. I knew they were cheap, even if they failed after 20k so be it but 1K miles, it shouldn't even be allowed on the shelf. Rock Auto's "premium" Dorman brand they sell has been fine for me so far. Could already tell the difference in how stiff they were compared to the Advanced ones.
@caayydenn Dormans good stuff all around for the most part. Nothing worse than redoing a pain in the ass job on a daily driver. Hope those outer rod ends hold up from Mevotech for the both of us lol
regency. when YOU think that part was made???? that turd was on the shelf for like 15 20 years lol. most of your 80s gm junk takes moog and nothing else. the parts made and sold by advanced, autozone etc were manufactured poorly back then.
I’d get my money back. That’s some bs.
Funny how you didn’t explain which option you bought. Parts stores can order whatever brand you want even thought it may take a couple days to get there. They usually do a “good, better, best” but all parts are OEM. If you buy the bottom line part with a one year or no warranty your experience sounds about right.
Stop buying white box cheap shit . Pay the extra 10 or 20 dollars and get the good stuff . If it doesn't come in a colored box with their logo on it , don't buy it .
If you're in Maryland always go to Salvos Auto Parts. Local business like 100 years old lol
Never had issues with auto zone parts.
We are at war with China. Did you expect them to make good stuff for us?
I needed a new radiator cap for my 99 Jeep Cherokee. I went to O'Reilly's got a brand new one and it felt really cheap so I put it on. Then it started leaking from the cap and I took it back and got a new one felt the same and had the same leak. ThenI went to the junkyard got me a used cap it was much thicker and heavier put it on and did not leak.
Use top name brand American made parts on your personal car unless you like doing the job 2 or 3 times with those attractive price chinese parts.
Good luck finding American made parts. Not often
Whining Click Bait
Try Rock Auto, it's slower but you can choose the brand. I've had good luck with Moog.
@@johnbandy8745 I ordered the Dorman set of inner tie rods from Rock Auto from their "Premium" category. They were the most expensive ones, so I'm hoping they last.
If they want it used, LKQ.🎵.. can be a cheaper option..
They sell moog at part stores
The dorman "Rd" suspension line is literally identical to duralast gold other than color. Seems like pretty solid stuff for the price
Another excellent and helpful video with some enjoyable humor mixed in! Great job!!
I've put 5 alternators from autozone this year. 2 of them were bad off the shelf and another lasted a week. One lasted 2 weeks and finally the one that's on it now is holding up. 😂
I have a refurbished alternator in my SS from AutoZone still working 4 years later my amp hasn't killed it yet. 😂 I don't think it's a stores fault but the companies that the contact parts from. You'll have similar reasons from other industries like construction for insurance Milwaukee impacts there's videos of people opening up the tool an try using it only for it to immediately break. It's not the distributor but the manufacturer. Y'all are blaming the wrong people. Keep in mind that most distributors have contracts with manufacturers to sell the parts an goods it is not as easy to sever a contract without being sued for not doing it correctly. Simple mind people. Education is important. 😂
Starters are the same from those stores. All cheap Chinese junk
Last time I called autozone, sum chick answered the phone "what's up" no big deal, she was also very attractive, but they don't know anything about anything.
Yeaaah just install your own battery lol. Better luck at O'Reilly's these days, I hate the sound of the AutoZone chicks 9 inch finger nails on the keyboard
Of course you went to advanced discount 2 star rated brands
You just need to know what brand to buy oriley masterpro is shit and dura last too get precision or moog suspension parts they sell it does brands at oriley that's what there is around here
Lmao have this issue with a shitty clutch master I’ve replaced it like 4 times the quick connect fitting keeps blowing apart internally. Gotten so good at them what’s supposed to be a 3 hour job takes me about 15 mins lmao. I’ve replaced so many they ended up having to file a warranty claim about it because I’ve replaced it so much. 🤷🏼 I’ll just keep changing them til either they stop offering the part due to failure rate or make a part update. Ain’t my money after the first cheap one.
All the parts are made in china these days... Might as well just buy rock auto, at least youre getting fair priced junk at that point.
Orallys
Never had premature failure issuesm
It's only a third of the way to the oil change
I just gotta say thank you so much for making these vids, I have an olds 98 Regency i bought as a daily driver for $2500 and these vids have been a massive help as i "bulletproof" it! Great job at explaining everything as well!
Not that bad
My dad has a 04 LeSabre that I'm borrowing (I have a '96 Corolla but needs a starter) & I got the issue diagnosed & it was the ICM, replaced the coils, wires, plugs, & even the air filter & that still didn't fix the problem & apparent the bottom coil pack wasn't giving spark to cylinders 1 & 4 & even when I switch one coil pack with another, the bottom coil pack doesn't get spark at all
