- Liquid soap making video using potassium hydroxide for face, hands and body. Hope you enjoy this video!
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
The recipe I am using in this video:
25% Coconut oil
25% Olive oil
30% Canola oil
10% Sweet Almond Oil
10% Castor Oil
2% superfat
30% lye concentration
Remember to use potassium hydroxide or you will end up making solid soap bars!
The percentage of coconut oil is kept 25% for nice bubbles but not too drying. All the other oils are also good options to choose from for making a clear soap, producing moisturising and stable lather! Also, keep the superfat at a minimum if you want a clear soap!
How I dilute my soap paste:
The batch made in the video is made with the total oil weight of 500g and would yield around 1000g of soap paste. Please run the formula through a lye calculator first and check the purity of your potassium hydroxide. The amount of potassium hydroxide varies with different purity and hence I did not include the amount I used. The lye calculator I like to use is soapee.com/calc.... The soap paste will then be further diluted for use. The dilution rates vary with person to person, the dilution I will use for this soap will be 1:3 or 1:5. (soap paste:distilled water).
I also made a video of how I dilute my soap paste: • Liquid Soap Making Par...

I just found your channel, watched 3 videos so far. I'm a Doctor in the USA and loved your videos. One of the first that really goes into the real details, scientific details of soap making. Thank you.
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
This was a great tutorial on the different phases. Thank you!
Thank you! Hope the video has helped!
Your steps were so easy to understand . Thank you ✨
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching
Best liquid soap recipe I have found. Beautifully clear. Thank you
I’m glad I have helped you! Thank you for your support❤️
Thank you for doing both languages, I like your soap method.
Thank you for your support! ❤️
Hi, I just discovered your channel, its always a pleasure to discover new soapers, my name is Patrick, great to meet you, this is beautiful, great job, i look forward to seeing more of your work..
Thank you Patrick! Happy to have your support ❤️❤️❤️
Angela ash is a good read. Bit dark & sad but also funny.written by my proffesor when i was in Uni in US.
Ohh nice. I should check it out! Thank you
Hello! I used a recipe very similar to this and the same steps, but instead of it going from a custard looking to a mash potato-ey (lol) it separated and formed something that looke like cheese curds, very granulated-like
What my could have happened? 😢
You can keep blending, usually it will stop separating.
Thanks for sharing your recipes..
Thank you! Hope it helps some of you!
Testing the PH of soap is completely unnecessary.
Yes, it’s just a way to show it on video. Once it passes the zap test, it will be ready to go😊
Thank you very much for the information.
Thank you for your comment. Hope my video helped you
Nice video...cannwe use it for hair wash??what is the substitute of canola?? thankyou
You can use it for your hair but take note if you don’t usually use soap for your hair, your hair needs some time to adjust to the pH of the soap. You can substitute canola with olive oil, sunflower oil or like rice bran oil.
Lovely tutorial! Did you cook on low or high?
I assume it is low since I only have one setting on my crockpot 😆
Lovely, I don't understand the percentage. How do I break it down into ounces?
Hello, you need to plug those percentages into lye calculator, along with the purity of your potassium hydroxide, total amount of you aim to make you soap paste then the calculator will show you how much to weigh out. Thank you
Isn't potassium hydroxide very bad for skin?
It is if you have it directly on the skin. Once it has gone through the saponification process it doesn’t burn the skin anymore.
Hi can I use goats milk in place of distilled water? I love thisvideo it’s been a great help! ❤️
I don’t think milk replacements are a great idea for hot process soap since the heat will cook the milk. If you want to use milk substitutes, it may be best to look into the cold process method instead.
@@TheScraftworks ok thank you ❤️
At what point of this would you add acid to lower the ph?
I used the soap as it is without adding acid to lower the pH. There’s no actual need to do that since superfatting make it nice on the skin. Thanks
@@TheScraftworks ok, but I'm trying yo achieve a 5.5 ph. At what point of the process should i add acid? Thanks for the reply, and I'm sure what you did is good, but I'm asking for a different purpose
I’m looking to start making soap but I don’t understand how it is really liquid if it’s so thick. I want to be able to put the soap in something where I can just squeeze it out like store bought liquid soaps. How do I achieve that so it’s always liquid and doesn’t need to be heated or messed with at all to squeeze out of a bottle or something? Thank you for these videos they’re really helpful
Hello there, liquid soaps are made with potassium hydroxide will look like a thick paste and needs to be diluted to be in liquid state. If you only dilute with water, it will definitely be thinner than store bought soaps as store bought soaps are made with thickeners. You can use a former bottle to tackle that problem. Hope this helps!
@@TheScraftworks ah okay thank you!!
Can we use Potassium Carbonate instead of Potassium Hydroxide? Please Guide!!
Hello, no you can’t use potassium carbonate. In order to create this recipe, you need to use potassium hydroxide.
What is your liquid soap pH in this video?
Can you be more specific on the measurements
If you put the percentage into the soap calculator according to the amount total oils and the purity of your KOH it will give you the exact amounts to measure! The soap calculator is important for soap making safety! Hope this helps!
Hi when you’re going to make a soap bar with dual lye for example, how would you calculate the measurements on a soap calculator?
Hello there, you can calculate dual lye soap bars using soapee lye calculator or other ones that feature dual lye options, if you click the dual lye option. it will ask you the percentage of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide and you go from there. Hope this helps!
Great video
Thank you ❤️
Is it wrong to have a liquid soap that is not clear? I’m asking in relation to your 5% Shea butter comment. THANKs! ❤️
The cloudy soap is mainly a cosmetic issue and many people who make liquid soap would aim for a clear soap 😂 another issue is that cloudy soap means there are a lot of unsaponified oils in the soap which makes it more susceptible to spoilage. Hope this helps!
Do you have to refrigerate this base until it's used?
You don’t have to but I like to store mine in the fridge to prevent the oils becoming rancid😆
@@TheScraftworks ok thank you!
Hi :) First of all thank you for this wonderfull recipe!
My soap turned Out wonderfully clear. But I got one Problem.. the soap has a rancid smell..! Can a homemade Soap get rancid by overcooking? Or could it be that the cooking smell with this soap smells a little rancid? The only Thing I changed was that I used Babassuoil insted of Coconutoil... Could this be the reason?
Looking Forward to youre answer 💞
It’s great that you’ve tried making your own liquid soap! I’ve never heard that overcooking can make the oils rancid - sometimes the liquid paste can smell a bit. Have you tried diluting it? The scent may be better after dilution. You should also check whether your oils are new to see if any of them are causing the smell.
Hi what pH is good for the skin?
The pH of this soap is around 8-9 and with the extra oils this would be good for the skin once the soap passes the zap test. Thanks!
Hi, great to discover ur channel 👍🏽
Can this paste be used immediately after making it or we need to wait till it cures ?
Also at what point shd we add fragrance and colour ?
You can use it right after since it is hot process soap, but if you leave it sequester it just bubbles better. You can add fragrance at the end where the paste forms or when you dilute it. I’m not sure about colour because I rarely work with it. 😊
Hi! may i know if this soap can be effective in washing dishes? :)
This soap formula has a slightly higher superfat of 3% so may not be the best formula for washing dishes. You can try this formula in my other video ruclips.net/video/y2ohjmg3ack/видео.html
Another video I’ve made 100% coconut soap which is perfect for soap making too ruclips.net/video/536pRm3pJzw/видео.html
How to make liquid goatmilk soap sis
I have read people can make the lye solution with goats milk but I haven’t personally tried it. Let me know how you go!
@@TheScraftworks i cant sis. 😭😭 water change to milk freezer?
mine doesn't go translucent😭 any idea? it's been 2days cooking😓
How much did you put as your superfat? And did you use the same oils?
Hi! Thank you for your great formula. Its look like very nice. I've made a couple batch before, and its ok. But, after I dilutted the paste, it smell rancid after 2 weeks. Does it need preservative after dilluted? Thank you!
Does the original paste smell rancid? Usually to prevent oils becoming rancid you should use high quality oils and you can add vitamin e to the soap paste. Preservatives are to prevent bacteria and fungus growing in your soap. It really depends what’s happening to your soap to decide which is necessary.
Thank you! Yes, my soap paste does smell rancid. I didn't add vit E, since I thought vit E was heat sensitive.
Thanks a lot! 🤗🤗😘
You can try adding it after the saponification process rather than during.
Ok, thanks! Send you a BIG hug 🤗
No problem! ❤️ hope I have helped
Hello! I loved your video, I’m trying right now but i just don’t reach the trace, looks like cut milk, or spoiled milk, it’s that normal until you reach the trace? Thank you very much
How long have you been cooking the paste? What is your soap formula?
@@TheScraftworks Hello again, i didn’t take time, the formula is 85% olive and 15% coconut, i run it trough a soap cac for 500g it give me 53.4 of potassium hydroxide and 119.41 of water, i think right now looks better, I made it 23 hours ago, the ph right now is 8-9 i just checked
@@TheScraftworks I don’t know if I may attach a picture here of how it looks now?
Is the paste separating ? As long as the oils and water have been combined they should eventually become a paste. Another thing you can try is to do a zap test with your tongue- place a bit of the soap on your tongue to see if it zaps, if it doesn’t the paste should be done
what is the percent difference between potassium hydroxide used for face and body soap? I think there is a difference in the use of potassium hydroxide
You can adjust the percentage of the superfat - to make it higher if you want it to be more moisturising for the face but as long as it’s balanced it would be great soap for both face and body
Ma what if I want to do this as a brightening soap for body, can I add tumeric powder(or other powders) oil and serums? And when should It be added please
If you want to add turmeric powder I’ll add it at the dilution state. Other oils will be best added to all the oils. Also depending on whether your serum is oil or water soluble will affect when you add them. Hope this helps.
Nice one, can I use a normal blender instead of a stick blender?
Oh. I think I misunderstood.. you mean like an electric whisk? I won’t recommend since it can cause splashing and that can burn your skin!
@@TheScraftworks ok thanks
a regular blender will also create bubbles which is the devil when making liquid soap..lol
Ma'am is this the same same soap which we have to use as shampoo ,body wash and face wash?
Yep you can choose to, you can try different dilution rate to suit the area you want to use it in. You can also dilute with citric acid to adjust the pH of the soap.
Does it matter if the soap isn't clear? I don't actually care about clear soap unless it's necessary.
As long as the pH is ok then not really. But I don’t recommend a high superfat maybe not more than 3% as it means there’s that much oils floating around and I would worry about spoilage of the oils
Ok thanks
hello, is it possible to use this technique and add guava leaves extract po as well?
I’ve never worked with guava leave extract. But I think it would be added in at dilution and I would check if it can survive a high pH and adding in preservative to the final product.
@@TheScraftworks okie, thank you so much!✨😊
When making liquid soap, when should you add sugar if you want to make a sugar soap?
You mean sugar scrub? I would add it to the paste when diluting. I’ve never made it before so I wouldn’t know if there would be suspension problem
If you're referring to bottled sugar soap (like Selleys sugar soap) I think that's a very different thing to liquid soap, my understanding is that 'sugar soap' is more of a caustic cleaner (basically straight lye) than a liquid soap.. I only know because I had the same idea!
Please can you explain To me how this is Part of superfat ??? Thank
You have to pluck it in the soap calculator the % of superfat. Is that what are you talking about?
@@TheScraftworks no , l want To know how To calculate
Maybe you can refer to this video, there’s a detail explanation of how to use a lye calculator and you take into account the superfat there
ruclips.net/video/536pRm3pJzw/видео.html
Which brand of crockpot do u use? Looks good.
Just a random one from a local store, I need to double check the brand 😄
I double checked it is a brand called CARE
Can I use shea butter on liquid soap.....
Yes you can but I will keep it below 10% if you want a clear soap
May I use rice bran oil instead of olive oil?
Sure can
Love your video! Also If i use honey what stage can i add it into the soap?
Thank you! I’ve never tried using honey in liquid soap- but I’ve noticed in forums that it can be added to the cold water to be used to dissolve the lye. Please note since this is hot process - it may cause the soap to look extremely dark and the smell may be funny since you would be cooking the honey😆
This is a good video, thank you.
A couple of GREAT books I have read this year - "The Dictionary of Lost Words" by Pip Williams and "Stealing Time" by Rebecca Bowyer both BRILLIANT books.
Thank you ! I must go check them out!
Á question is Sodium hidróxido and lye ???
I’m sorry I don’t understand your question🙈
@@TheScraftworks i our recipe you use ley or potassium hydroxide ????
Liquid soap you use potassium hydroxide and solid bar soap you use sodium hydroxide
@@TheScraftworks Thank 🌹🌹
Hi,
What is the PH of this soap?
I’ve never tested the pH of this soap. You can always adjust the pH of the soap using citric acid solution.
Can I add herbal tea? And when to use? Plz reply
Hmm I’ve never tried using herbal tea making liquid soaps as I worry about the shelf life and since it’s hot process that it will burn.
I think the best way is to infuse the herbs into the oils instead of using herbal tea. Hope my answer helps!
Refind rice bran oil can b use?
Yes you can
Your percentage recipe adds up to 132% 🤷🏼♂️?! I’d love to know what percentage of oil, water and potassium hydroxide?
Hmmm I think you need to understand the recipe formulation for soaps more. Usually the recipe will contain oils that add up to a total of 100% for you to put into the soap calculator. Then the 30% is the lye concentration you put into the calculator. Finally the 2% is the superfat, the extra oils you have in the product. When you put in all the numbers, the soap calculator will tell you how much oils, water and potassium hydroxide in g/ounces to measure.
The Scraftworks thanks 🙏🏼 😊
While there probably aren’t many RUclips users like I - who is visually impaired - for those of us who perhaps don’t read or don’t read English well, it would be helpful if you would narrate the end the ingredients instead of just putting them in text. Just a thought. Thank you but unfortunately this recipe is not very useful to me
Thank you for your comment. I’ll take that into consideration for my newer videos thank you.
pH?
What do you mean?
@@TheScraftworks pH 7?
What is your liquid soap pH in this video?
No recipe, no measurements only a %
Yes the percentage are there for you to enter it in a soap calculator and the exact quantity will depend on the total amount you want to make and the purity of the hydroxide! Hope this helps.
annoying completely unnecessary music
