    Thank you so much for your explanation .. it's a beautiful song irrespective of the technique Justin applied. Very talented you are, as is Justin. Cheers.

    Outstanding lesson, John! :) Thank you so much for it! I just saw Justin this week over here in the States, but was not close enough to see what he was doing. He changed guitars on practically every song, which lead me to believe he uses quite a few alternate tunings. Blue Guitar, Forever Autumn, Lovely To See You, Never Comes The Day...

    • @johnmorrell
      @johnmorrell  6 лет назад +3

      Yes, I saw him recently too and was amazed that he swapped alternate tunes guitars all night long. I used to just sit with the albums and work my way through them as I was listening to them by playing along. I thought I knew the tunes, but after seeing him play it was back to the beginning.Of the songs you mentioned, I think Forever Autumn is the only one in standard tuning as far as I remember.
      I’m glad the video helped.

    Hi Mr Morrell! I'm Brazilian and I really like your explanations of how to play a song. I couldn't believe it when I saw that you had taken one of my favorite songs of all time: Had to fall in love! I play in a Genesis cover band here in Brazil and I learn a lot from your videos - but this Moody Blues song thrills me whenever I hear it. I just learned it and it was you who taught me. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Thank you very much! Carlos Navarro, Sao Paulo, Brazil

    Thanks for this video I have tried to play moodies songs but they never sound right so your post is a revelation, publish a book of thier songs in the correct tunings and I will be first in line to buy it..... Thanks again.

    • @johnmorrell
      @johnmorrell  4 года назад

      Thanks you, that´s so kind. There are some very good videos on YT that show the correct way and tunings for Moody Blues tunes. I don´t really feel the need to publish the same videos as everyone else. I usually take a quick look around to see how others play certain songs, and if there is no one doing the song, or playing it incorrectly, I´ll work on it and then post a video. Take a look around and if you find a song you really want to learn but cant find it anywhere here or onlin, then fee free to ask me and I´ll see if I can help you. Thanks for taking the time to learn the tune - that´s why I do it..

      John,
      Excellent video lesson. Is that an open G tuning?

  • @yuanyuanzeng6442
    @yuanyuanzeng6442 2 года назад

    He tells the story that this was recorded in a storage closet by the tape operator at the studios they were recording Octave at. Seems doubtful. The voice is at least double tracked and there's also more than one track of guitar too. But you definitely nailed it here.

    • @johnmorrell
      @johnmorrell  2 года назад

      Maybe, the initial track was recorded in the closet and then all the rest was overdubbed later. Perhaps we'll never know. I sat in front of Justin Hayward on his last tour and learned a lot about how he plays his tunes and how he uses lots of alternate tuning on different guitars. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and hope it helps to clarify how to play it, if you didnt already know. Cheers.

    • @yuanyuanzeng6442
      @yuanyuanzeng6442 2 года назад

      @@johnmorrell yes of course could have used other blank tracks on the tape later. Other ideas for videos like this... would love to see someone cover some of his electric guitar leads and backing tracks like those on Driftwood or This Morning as examples.

    • @johnmorrell
      @johnmorrell  2 года назад

      @@yuanyuanzeng6442 Driftwood is one of my all time favourite songs. I used to play and sing it quite a lot at solo gigs, several years ago. Can you play the solo on driftwood? Or are you just curious to hear and see how it's played. The last couple of phrases at the end of the main guitar solo are overdubbed - two guitars interweaving.

    • @yuanyuanzeng6442
      @yuanyuanzeng6442 2 года назад

      @@johnmorrell cannot play it but would love to see someone do it. Same for My Brother and This Morning. The New Horizon double tracked electric solo would be interesting as well.
