3 Watches Under $10,000 That HOLD Their Value (That Aren’t Rolexes) | Chrono24

  • We've selected 3 popular watches with high value retention that cost less than $10,000 - and none of them are from Rolex, Patek Philippe, or Audemars Piguet.
Watches' ability to retain their value is a wonderful side aspect of this hobby - after all, we work hard for our money. It's no secret that the timepieces that experience the greatest value retention and appreciation often come from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet. The only problem is that most of these watches are impossible to acquire for many collectors. While popular Rolex models easily sell for upwards of $10,000, watches from the other two brands often cost many times more than that. Bearing that in mind, I've selected three popular watches with good value retention that go for under $10,000. None of my picks are from Rolex, Patek Philippe, or Audemars Piguet, and spoiler alert: One watch on this list even costs less than $1,000.

Thomas: Great video. Your version of "value retention" is a smart approach to collecting for almost everybody. Work hard, buy a great watch, enjoy it AND, if you have to sell it, break even (or maybe even realize a slight profit). The selection of watches fits this sane approach to collecting, and shows that it can be done at a wide range of price points. Fantastic content. One minor point: the new Alpinists are pretty amazing.

If you can’t afford to have a watch drop in value you shouldn’t buy it. Never bought a car, phone, jewellery etc expecting it to retain its value.

Everyone has to go through difficult times at some point. The point here is that you can afford easily a watch at some point and have the need for liquidity in the future for any reason. Having something that expensive that holds its value is pretty enjoyable as it is still representing a lot of money for more than 90% pf the people

as a Speedy owner, I love the Santos for it's look, history and bracelet. However, my most recent "value retention" move was to sell my SARB033 for a tidy profit and upgrade to the much rarer and pricier SARB045.

Watches shouldn’t be seen as investments. If you want to invest in something invest in real estate, the stock market or a business. You will make a lot more money. That said, buy what you like, try not to overpay and hold onto it and pass it to your kids. A good quality watch will hold some of its value in case you go belly up, but your purchase should not be based on that.

The SARB017 is 39.5mm, but it's still a great size, that wears smaller than one might think, especially on strap. I personally love my blue SPB089 variant, which is well north of the $600 MSRP I paid, but that is because only 1,959 were made. I'm glad you included it on your list, which was unexpected. The Speedmaster price now vs. then price almost makes me want to shed a tear, but I didn't have the money to even consider one back then.

Tons of watches' price went off the chart due to big inflation since 2020. For example, glycine airman d-c4. This is pre Invicta model that 2 years ago you can get one for sub 400 dollars in gray market. Since then it is sold out everywhere and price went beyond 1000 dollars used. Watches didn't double the price with 3 years is not worth mentioning.

Nope, it's a watch. If you want to invest - there are stock markets, real estate etc. Buy what you really want, enjoy it. If you are happy you will make much more money. The life is too short and what is the point everyone to wear Rolex, Santos or Speedy. Come on, people. Don't ruin your true desire because you want something and this will loose value. If you follow that "investment" logic soon you will wear second hand clothes and eat only junk food.

I was really excited and I expected much more from Chrono24. The same topics as everywhere. It looks like the watch community has the same opinion for every watch or brand:
    Everyone hates Hublot.
    Everyone is disappointed by TagHeuer.
    Everyone wants Rolex.
Everyone is looking about the retention value.
And of course everyone wants the dot over 90.
I have Omega, Rolex, Bulova, Doxa, TagHeuer, Oris and even Pagani Design watches. And I don't care about the money. I enjoy every single watch of my collection.
Nothing really exciting here. Too predictable. Sorry. Not interested anymore.

Thank you for sharing! Which topics would you be interested in? Is there any specific brand for example you want to hear more? Cheers

@@Chrono24Official What about the micro-brands? Not presented by Chrono24 but based on your personal taste? What about the big failures? I am pretty sure it will be interesting to watch and listen about the wrong steps on the major brands. Zenith with El Primero, the Rolex quartzes, etc. The "homages" between the big brands (not only Hublot) is also good topic. The rise and fails of the giants - Longines in the past and Longines in the present. What is the process in the watch factories to promote apprentices to masters. Please, I love watches because they are not money. They are piece of history and masterpieces as well.

Yeah enough of you all. Watch and investment never can be associated together. Unsubscribed and from email as well.

If you look at the pricing graphs for the current generations of these models, you'll see they're stable or even going up YoY (Dec '21 - Dec '22). For example:
      Cartier Santos WSSA0029
      Seiko Alpinist SARB017
      Omega Speedmaster 145.022
      Rolex Datejust 36 or 41
      IWC Top Gun Chronograph IW389101
