I don't think it would be klipsch employee, the video is encouraging people to buy a Klipsch speaker and improve it for $205. Even with the ratings on this speaker, I wouldn't buy it, but now it is a DIY project. It interest me. I'm a quadriplegic who likes working with my hands in watchmaking, gunsmithing and electronics.
@Fat Rat Thanks, I have always heard that about Klipsch. Way back when, I don't think they called it "listener fatigue" in my circle but conveyed the same experience to me. I have a Ok 5 speaker system for the TV by Hsu. I want a 2 speaker system for my 13 y/o daughter and her having speaker fatigue after 2 hours sounds perfect. I have listening fatigue to any of her music after an hour. Having a project is a double winner. I have been thinking of building from scratch, this is a nice compromise. Thanks for your expertise and patience in explaining.

The sand cast resistors are often not inductance compensated, so they can have quite a significant inductance value, which throws off the crossover and does have an audible effect. Higher end power resistors wind in both directions to cancel out most of the inductive effect of using wire wound resistors.
I got pumped by this and started the upgrades on one of my RP-600ms. I changed the binding post with tube connector pure copper and used some left over Dynamat for the cabinet dampening. The results: base is more tight and mids/highs feel more precise. I would attribute that to reducing the resonance in the cabinet. The binding post look more sleek now as well. For 60$ this was a great upgrade plus a fun project. Looking forward for the crossover upgrade video. :D
Thanks for posting your feedback Ismael. The Dynamat will tighten up that bass response a bit, but the more precise highs are a result of the tube connectors.
You know Danny thats really cool but as I think the upgrade without doubt will be significant I'm thinking I'll even take it farther & build a new box out of baltic birch & while I'm at it I'll replace the woofer & then Why am I going to buy these in the first place when I can buy your new open baffle monitor kit, now thats a no brainer.

Simply brilliant content. I, like everyone else watching this I am sure, feel a little cheated by the industry (as sure Klipsch are one of many guilty of this). We chase better sound by changing and upgrading cables and yet all that time the weak link is the STEEL in the binding post assembly (which I am AMAZED, and infuriated, is used). What are we all doing?? This is a REAL eye-opener of a segment. Shame I am in the UK. Would send you my ProAc's to pimp, though I fear the quote will be more than the $209 for this little lot.

This is overall really great...inspiring me to try it at some point! Just one question, does the “no-res” application effect the internal volume in any appreciable manner? Wondering how that could effect the low frequency depth. Response would obviously improve, however?

For anyone out there that does not believe that Danny's mods will make an appreciable improvement on the Klipsch, please do not doubt. For sure the Klipsch are great speakers for their price among commercially available products. But please know, they are a sonic compromise from conception, to design, and to build. They have to be, to meet their price point. And none of Danny's improvements and mods are based on magical thinking. They are all solid engineering and demonstrable improvements. These mods he offers are a great way for someone who is fairly new to the audio hobby, who has owned these for a while and is ready for an upgrade, but is not willing to spend substantially more money for new speakers right now. This gives them a chance to make a large improvement for minimal dollars, as a stepping stone to their next big speaker purchase.
For anyone still thinking of buying the upgrade kit or already-upgraded speakers: these are what someone who hates Klipsch speakers and think they could "fix" them would create. They sound NOTHING like Klipsch post-mod. You could literally save yourself $300 and turn your treble control down to 9 o'clock and toss a wet blanket over the speakers. Sound is WAY in the background, lack of detail, no air, and a weirdly congested mid-range that gave me instant fatigue. Put the old crossovers right back in.

I second that! I use these for music in stereo, but I have the RP-600M set as my fronts for my home theater. I have an RP-404C center working with them and RP-400 for surround. I would like for at the the center to be matched to the upgrade.

Cost for me for these speakers are $252. That's a standard end of year accommodation still more than cost. That's fully boxed and normal from factory shipping.
New to the channel but this is pretty interesting stuff to me. When you say you've A/B tested is that blind subjective testing on top of the measurements?

Billy Bunter jajaja sound is very subjective. I own a pair of Polk LSiM703 which are much better built and use better components than the klipsch, but the klipschs do something right and sound very different. If we can raise the quality of the RP speaker then it will probably be worth it.
Do you do these upgrades for others for a fee, or are you just showing us how to do them for ourselves? If you do them for a fee, can you provide your store name, contact info, etc.?
i crossovers is were there is a lot to gain and the first plaice corners are cut in speakers, cabinet and drivers must be the first priority for big brands to make them look good and less work for them in designing a crossover no one sees. Luckily for us its the easier part to upgrade. upgrade a woofer for example will also require crossover changes.
Klipsch guys should see this video 👌😀 this will be kinda shame for them. And this kind of turning should be already installed in whole klipsch speakers for price what they offer

I’ve just measure iron and air core inductor (with and without 8 ohms resistor), and I don’t find any kind of energy storage (waterfall). However, the distortion is 10 times superior with iron core (0,1% Vs 1% at low frequency) in this case.
Joe Patate there’s some pseudoscience mixed up with some good recommendations in this video series. If parts have better tolerances and measure better, then they are worth the upgrade. There is lots of snake (and real oil!) in audio electronics too.
The differences in how they sound are easy to hear. And the smearing effect that I am referring to is not going to show up in a waterfall plot. And distortion is not superior with a iron core inductor nor is it a factor here.
@@dannyrichie9743 English is not my first language so I don’t know exactly "smearing" means. Something not good, something I can’t measure for sure. So I don’t really know what we talks, what I know is, there are no non-linearity that can’t see with impedance measurements (amplitude, waterfall, distortion, etc), if it's above the electronic noise. And I measure significant distortion increase (at low level) with a similar iron core of the video (also from an american speaker).
If looking at those measurements then you will see no difference. And looking for a distortion number will tell you nothing. Distortion claims are for the guys in the marketing department. The "smearing" is a blend of one note into the next. So think of it as a loss of clarity.
Hi Danny. I hope the center channel comes in before you finish this series. Would adding some more bracing or hardwood strips be worth the effort? Adding some sort of damping material on the woofer(Sorbothane)?
I must say, I was a bit shocked when I saw how cheaply these speakers appear to be made (probably shouldn't be)! That tinny stamped metal on the woofer and all that steel is pretty lousy. Although I do love the way they sound. That being said, I just have to know how much better they can be. Im in!
I like it, because it convinces me, that the build of my JBL clones is not as cheap as I tended to think... It is satisfying to me, that also Klipsch only cooks with water lol... And, by the way, the damping of my clones is even way batter than what Danny does here. I used high quality 2.5" Hemp insulation, covered with a special acoustic fabric to avoid that hemp-fibers can sneak into the speakers (This stuff has slightly the characteristics of Rock-wool insulation. By far not so nasty for sure, but it goes this direction..JBL uses Rockwool pure and doesn`t cover it, so my method is probably more perfect compared to JBL`s Build Quality ;-) ). So, all that said Jimminy Christmas, the audiophile way is the way of tuning and modding. That's a big part of the big fun we can have with our passion!

Hi i'm a decent woodworker , would it make sense for me to craft some custom made boxes made out of a hardwood rather than the particle board stock box ? Other than looks would there be a difference in sound quality . I'd manufacture them exactly the same.
I have a two pairs of klipsch kg 5.5 they have two 10 inch woofers and a horn Tweeter in each cabinet. But I have them stacked because of space it's like 13bye 13 ft.and 9ft ceiling I like hard rock loud very music would like to replace crossovers for stacked proformace what would best for that ? Could you build it or is a bad idea?
I always thought Klipsch were the speakers you want. I can't fight myself out of a wet bag. So my question is what speaker would you recommend for a person like me that listens to 60s and 70s rock. I want a speaker I don't have to rebuild to have good quality?

So if let’s say I decide to upgrade the parts of the speakers crossover, can I just upgrade equivalent parts. Let’s say I send you a picture of the crossover and we can upgrade the parts or we still need to measure the speaker cos it will effect the sound?
Great stuff. I would pay for this but i doubt that someone around here makes upgrades like this. However one question - Is the resonance of the cabinet not an intended thing? For the sound/bass to have some mass? Isn't the sound somewhat flat with The Nores?
Cabinet resonances are not intended. And when your box is buzzing it is masking the actual bass output. You never what your speaker to become instruments. You want them to be able to faithfully reproduce real instruments. And No Rez simply damps out those resonances leaving you with cleaner and tighter bass response.
Hey Danny, thank you for a very educational video. Like many other people here, I am astounded at the cheap parts and shoddy cabinet construction on these well reviewed speakers. I have seriously been considering purchasing them. Here in Australia they sell at a “discount” price of AU$1399! That’s equivalent to US$955! So US buyers do comparatively better at about US$600. Even so it’s a lot of dollars for the cheap way they are constructed. I think that you are doing a great job helping buyers get better performance and value for the money they have spent. I suppose that many speaker manufacturers cut corners to keep their costs to a minimum. It’s a raw deal for unsuspecting purchasers though. Are there any brands which give better quality and value?

From the recent glowing reviews of the 600’s I got the impression that the high end had been tamed somewhat; but a horn is a horn and horns like to hoot! Thanks for your recommendation. I will certainly look at them if I can. Trouble is that in Woop-Woop, SA there is a deficit of good hifi dealerships. There is a maker of speakers and kits in SA www.adelaidespeakers.com/. I may give them a try.
@Fat Rat. Thanks for your information. The SA speakers have a Danish pedigree, which is very favourable to them. The Mantra 5 model is still available in black at $799 at RIO. They have good specs too. I like R&R too, having grown up in the 50’s & 60’s why wouldn’t I? I listen mainly to classical, baroque and some organ music these days though. I wonder how the Mantra 5’s would sound with this kind of music? With organ music good bass response and definition is desirable. RIO also have an SA Pandion 2 which seem ideal from the words and specs. These are nearly twice the price though. Spouse acceptance is inversely proportional to price, as you’re no doubt aware. I’ve also been interested in the Jamo C93 concert speakers. I found out that Jamo have been taken over by Klipsch! I’ll check out the Krix too. Thanks for your interest and feedback.
Hi Danny.. this was a great video and in time I imagine valuable for when these speakers drop in value in the used market worthy of upgrade or perhaps today based on the final audible results.. I'm wondering, based on the current market costs alone, cost of an RP-600M plus the upgrade kit ($400+$210=$610), what kit from your company (same relative size - ie bookshelf) is a better speaker when measured using subjective metrics (sound stage, imaging, clarity/resolution, base response, frequency response, dynamics, etc.)... or how does this upgrade compare to other similarly or higher priced speakers in the market? And are these good questions to be asking?
Good question. You could build our X-LS Encore kit (similar sized bookself speaker) with all upgrades for less money and blow way past these in every way. But it is a complete kit. You build it yourself including the cabinets.
Nice mod! But, are all iron-core inductors really that bad? What about audio signal tranformers, MM phono cartriges, tube amp output transformers etc? They all use iron cores.

Check again. I think the kit is on their now. Last I looked I saw the RP600 listed but you might have to pick up the phone and just call him.
Skunkie reviewed these speakers. Klipsch incorporated Danny's modifications into these speakers and called them MK2.She/he returned them t Amozon

It would be nice to glue some hard wood ribs on the side panels of those cabinets. One for each side. That usually helps a lot.

Billy Bunter jajaja sound is very subjective. I own a pair of Polk LSiM703 which are much better built and use better components than the klipsch, but the klipschs do something right and sound very different. If we can raise the quality of the RP speaker then it will probably be worth it.
Do you do these upgrades for others for a fee, or are you just showing us how to do them for ourselves? If you do them for a fee, can you provide your store name, contact info, etc.?
i crossovers is were there is a lot to gain and the first plaice corners are cut in speakers, cabinet and drivers must be the first priority for big brands to make them look good and less work for them in designing a crossover no one sees.
Luckily for us its the easier part to upgrade. upgrade a woofer for example will also require crossover changes.
can you share a link for ' No Rez' ? How does the foam from Sonic Barrier compare? Same thing?

Nice video on upgrading these. Just curious about a point that you made about cabinet resonances not being a part of the original signal. I agree but couldn’t you make a similar argument about the port output in a bass reflex speaker?

I’ve just measure iron and air core inductor (with and without 8 ohms resistor), and I don’t find any kind of energy storage (waterfall).
However, the distortion is 10 times superior with iron core (0,1% Vs 1% at low frequency) in this case.
Joe Patate there’s some pseudoscience mixed up with some good recommendations in this video series. If parts have better tolerances and measure better, then they are worth the upgrade. There is lots of snake (and real oil!) in audio electronics too.
The differences in how they sound are easy to hear.
And the smearing effect that I am referring to is not going to show up in a waterfall plot.
And distortion is not superior with a iron core inductor nor is it a factor here.
@@dannyrichie9743 English is not my first language so I don’t know exactly "smearing" means. Something not good, something I can’t measure for sure.
So I don’t really know what we talks, what I know is, there are no non-linearity that can’t see with impedance measurements (amplitude, waterfall, distortion, etc), if it's above the electronic noise.
And I measure significant distortion increase (at low level) with a similar iron core of the video (also from an american speaker).
If looking at those measurements then you will see no difference. And looking for a distortion number will tell you nothing. Distortion claims are for the guys in the marketing department. The "smearing" is a blend of one note into the next. So think of it as a loss of clarity.

Hi Danny. I hope the center channel comes in before you finish this series. Would adding some more bracing or hardwood strips be worth the effort? Adding some sort of damping material on the woofer(Sorbothane)?
Adding some bracing will help (no doubt). I wouldn't start messing with the woofer as adding mass to it is not so reversible.
I must say, I was a bit shocked when I saw how cheaply these speakers appear to be made (probably shouldn't be)!
That tinny stamped metal on the woofer and all that steel is pretty lousy. Although I do love the way they sound. That being said, I just have to know how much better they can be. Im in!
I like it, because it convinces me, that the build of my JBL clones is not as cheap as I tended to think... It is satisfying to me, that also Klipsch only cooks with water lol... And, by the way, the damping of my clones is even way batter than what Danny does here. I used high quality 2.5" Hemp insulation, covered with a special acoustic fabric to avoid that hemp-fibers can sneak into the speakers (This stuff has slightly the characteristics of Rock-wool insulation. By far not so nasty for sure, but it goes this direction..JBL uses Rockwool pure and doesn`t cover it, so my method is probably more perfect compared to JBL`s Build Quality ;-) ).
So, all that said Jimminy Christmas, the audiophile way is the way of tuning and modding. That's a big part of the big fun we can have with our passion!

I have a two pairs of klipsch kg 5.5 they have two 10 inch woofers and a horn Tweeter in each cabinet. But I have them stacked because of space it's like 13bye 13 ft.and 9ft ceiling I like hard rock loud very music would like to replace crossovers for stacked proformace what would best for that ? Could you build it or is a bad idea?
To get good response you need to get the horns next to each other so woofs two horns two more woofs

Great stuff. I would pay for this but i doubt that someone around here makes upgrades like this. However one question - Is the resonance of the cabinet not an intended thing? For the sound/bass to have some mass? Isn't the sound somewhat flat with The Nores?
Cabinet resonances are not intended. And when your box is buzzing it is masking the actual bass output. You never what your speaker to become instruments. You want them to be able to faithfully reproduce real instruments.
And No Rez simply damps out those resonances leaving you with cleaner and tighter bass response.
Probably a stupid question-are the speakers still bi-ampable after the mods?
Hey Danny, thank you for a very educational video. Like many other people here, I am astounded at the cheap parts and shoddy cabinet construction on these well reviewed speakers. I have seriously been considering purchasing them. Here in Australia they sell at a “discount” price of AU$1399! That’s equivalent to US$955! So US buyers do comparatively better at about US$600. Even so it’s a lot of dollars for the cheap way they are constructed. I think that you are doing a great job helping buyers get better performance and value for the money they have spent. I suppose that many speaker manufacturers cut corners to keep their costs to a minimum. It’s a raw deal for unsuspecting purchasers though. Are there any brands which give better quality and value?

From the recent glowing reviews of the 600’s I got the impression that the high end had been tamed somewhat; but a horn is a horn and horns like to hoot! Thanks for your recommendation. I will certainly look at them if I can. Trouble is that in Woop-Woop, SA there is a deficit of good hifi dealerships. There is a maker of speakers and kits in SA www.adelaidespeakers.com/. I may give them a try.
@Fat Rat. Thanks for your information. The SA speakers have a Danish pedigree, which is very favourable to them. The Mantra 5 model is still available in black at $799 at RIO. They have good specs too. I like R&R too, having grown up in the 50’s & 60’s why wouldn’t I? I listen mainly to classical, baroque and some organ music these days though. I wonder how the Mantra 5’s would sound with this kind of music? With organ music good bass response and definition is desirable. RIO also have an SA Pandion 2 which seem ideal from the words and specs. These are nearly twice the price though. Spouse acceptance is inversely proportional to price, as you’re no doubt aware. I’ve also been interested in the Jamo C93 concert speakers. I found out that Jamo have been taken over by Klipsch! I’ll check out the Krix too. Thanks for your interest and feedback.
Hi Danny.. this was a great video and in time I imagine valuable for when these speakers drop in value in the used market worthy of upgrade or perhaps today based on the final audible results.. I'm wondering, based on the current market costs alone, cost of an RP-600M plus the upgrade kit ($400+$210=$610), what kit from your company (same relative size - ie bookshelf) is a better speaker when measured using subjective metrics (sound stage, imaging, clarity/resolution, base response, frequency response, dynamics, etc.)... or how does this upgrade compare to other similarly or higher priced speakers in the market? And are these good questions to be asking?
Good question. You could build our X-LS Encore kit (similar sized bookself speaker) with all upgrades for less money and blow way past these in every way. But it is a complete kit. You build it yourself including the cabinets.

Nice mod! But, are all iron-core inductors really that bad? What about audio signal tranformers, MM phono cartriges, tube amp output transformers etc? They all use iron cores.
