I have a tip that is too good not to share. I made the GR upgrade on my 600s. (adding bracing too) $500 speakers now sound like $2k speakers. My stands have the tweeter at ear level. I adjusted my stands to tilt the speakers back so that the tweeters are aimed 8" above my ears at the listening position. The sound stage opened up massively. Instrument separation, air, and the speakers became transparent in the room. This is the other 50% of this upgrade IMO. I have listened to many expensive speakers and now these sound like you're listening to $5k+ bookshelf speakers. Please try it, only investment was a bit of time.

Don't sell yourself short as a reviewer, Danny. This was one of the better speaker reviews I've seen on RUclips. Enjoyed the whole series. I need these things like another hole in my head but I'm trying to figure out a way to buy a pair, mod them and fit them into my house. Maybe for my office rig. Thanks!

Thank you, Klipsch people should be happy that such good ingredients were put in a budget product. The realities of keeping a lot of people employed building products a lot of people will buy will always force some corner cutting. The hobbyist can buy the upgrade package, put some time into doing the work and square up some of the corners that were cut.

Great Videos Danny! Learned a lot from this series. This really makes me want to see the crossover before making a final purchasing decision. The crossover seems to be that one magical component that most speaker manufacturers hide. Images of drivers and cabinet construction abound. But, crossover networks seem to be the think we don't talk about enough. Well, except for you. Which is a good thing.

I just use a vintage Yamaha 10 band equalizer that I've used for years and the problem is solved , but honestly was a very slight problem to begin with. I have a plentiful amount of mid range without tearing apart a brand new pair of speakers.
Although the mid-range issue seems to persist through streaming and listening to CD's . While listening to vinyl these speakers sound perfect for the money even with my EQ off but that's just my ears and opinion.

I think if anyone has done their research and are 100% honest with themselves about what so many consumer products are, this stuff is understood just not admitted to.
I think the kit is a great idea to not only improve a very good quality budget level product but this also provides an audio enthusiast with some basic design/implementation framework to show how it can influence the actual quality of sound.

Happy klipsch RP-600M owner for two months. I love bookshelf speakers. They sit on very heavy metal stands full of sand. The sand comes from the Normandy beaches used during D-Day landings. They didn’t make a spectacular upgrade from Monitor Audio Bronze B2. I got an incredible deal. Plenty of dynamics that work well with my Yamaha RN-803d using Qobuz. This is a fun speaker. I tried a pair of Klipsch Heresy 3 yesterday at my local hi-Fi store. Too big for my stands ! Was blown away by the mid-range, precision and just about everything. The truth is we can upgrade all the time! I’ve loved watching this series about how to upgrade what was quite an expensive purchase for me. Is this the path I want to make upgrading? I don’t know yet. Perhaps building my own speaker could be the challenge I’m looking for. Perhaps my son will love the Klipsch? I’m sure he will.

I know the topic of "burn-in" is controversial for most folks, but being a modifier as well, I usually break in my crossovers that have poly-caps by placing dummy loads on them and running noise for about a day or two at higher wattage rating to allow them to "form". Night and day difference after burn-in.

I feel so bad about posting this earlier comments. Here was the problem. Having the speakers in a large living room and listening from about twelve feet away I thought this was not a good upgrade. I judged them unfairly. I decided to take them apart and check every step. The first disassemble worked out fine. The second one, however, I found that the tweeter solder had failed when I mounted it. Reconnecting and evaluating again--WoW what a difference. Pays not to judge to rapidly. Please accept my apologies.
Thanks Danny for such a great upgrade.

When you mentioning opening the lips of the singer caught on the microphone I think of Diana Krall.
When listening to my system I hear this even the spit from the mouth stuck between two lips as the skin pulls apart. When somebody is playing the bass and it’s rubbing up against their body you can hear if they are wearing blue jeans or if it’s a women wearing silk or satin dress you can hear the texture of the persons skin on their fingers when strumming the strings if it’s smooth skin or if they have calluses with heart broken skin.
Being able to hear somebody in the studio flip the pages on music or the air conditioning coming on in the background or a musician tapping their toe to keep time all this kind of stuff that you cannot hear out of a normal set of speakers on average every day big box store equipment.
    Good job 👍

Here is an exerpt from an email I sent to a friend a while back that relates to this...
The sound of LXmini is fantastic! Best sound I've ever heard. The 'airyness' of the highs is amazing, listening to other speakers now a waste of time. They use 3" Seas full-range drivers for highs & upper mid, cross-over to mid-bass at 700Hz (by DSP) along with some other DSP shenanigans. There is something very special about the cardioid response of the full-range driver. It has so much detail (easily good as my B&W in that regard), but never sounds harsh, no hint of sibilance (like B&W). This audio theory certainly deserves implementation - to me, cardioid response is a necessity for future designs. Now on to the upward-firing 5.25" mid-bass. This driver is mounted in a sealed tube of particular volume, diameter and length, stuffed with acoustic fill to create an "infinite transmission line" enclosure. It hits incredibly low (for its size) and perfectly balanced with other frequencies. Very natural balanced sound and tone. For music, no need for subs. Linkwitz' design is genius. Any improvement could only come from better gear (they are accurate and I hear nuance that I didn't even hear with the B&Ws) and if subs are desired, the LXmini's would be done an injustice with anything other than fast open-baffles. Compared to other speakers, they are smooth, natural, delicate. They can play very loud (louder than I would listen) but never sound loud - if that makes sense.
Wife's impressions, "Is it just those playing?" "I can tell the way they moved their mouth." "I'm hearing more details" "These seem loud and quiet at the same time"
No joke, I've heard new instruments in the background on songs I've listened to critically (repeatedly many times recently while evaluating all these speakers over the past year). I've heard differences in chorus 'repetitions' that I never heard before. Most importantly, the emotion of the musician is there, to the point you can tell if they were 'feeling it' or not. The sweetness, anger, sadness, etc. is revealed in their voice (micro-inflections?), pick hitting the string, fingers slapping the keys, etc. You get so much more information, authenticity becomes transparent. Listening sessions become more emotional, and maybe less about the music. I find myself listening for the emotion of the artists, and do they sound authentic to the song... are they feeling it?

Marc Wanner Linkwitz LXmini’s are amazing. I build my own Class A Amps and per-amps and attend the Burning Amp festival were Linkwitz would show off his speakers. I just built the LXmini line stage bi-amp line stage analog crossover that was a collaboration of Nelson pass and Linkwitz. My LXminis are coming. What has impressed me the most is the taming of a bucking bronco with anything and everything imaginable wrong with it and changing the frequency response dramatically for the better, as well as refurbishing and reinforcing a flimsy, resonant, boomy cabinet.
With these changes I just may able to live with it and enjoy it, maybe even a lot.. Currently I just can't stand its flaws. But they turn out to be fixable! (with a bit of TLC)
Of course, this nearly places the price near 1000 Euro, and there are a lot of excellent speakers that sound great without rolling your sleeves. Maybe buy a used Klipsch and update it :-)
Klipsch should build a "GR Systems limited edition" to your parameters and pay you a royalty per speaker sold.

Danny, it would be awesome to learn what some of your other demo/testing/reference tracks are and WHY you chose them???
Maybe start with a list of 10 Reference Songs and then make it a regular segment at the end of each Tuesdays Tech Talk video to list one or two more Reference Tracks in each episode?
Afterall, we do ALL this for The MUSIC!

I, like most of the others here, really enjoyed this series and I'm sure I'd find the so called, upgraded, RP-600's an improvement. I say so called because while there are those of us who are used to better than the Klipsch can provide, even after the upgrade, there's a reason that Klipsch has sold untold thousands of these over the last two years or so. And perhaps changing the sound signature to suit an audiophile type just might leave the average listener a bit cold. All that was done here is tailoring the sound to suit ideals that Danny holds and perhaps Ron will agree with when he reviews them. I suspect I would agree as well. However, it would be very interesting to get a stock set of these and let average Joes and Janes hear them side by side to see which they preferred. I guess you could tell them it was an experiment to test quality control of the two different samples purchased months apart just so they aren't influenced by the idea that one is "supposed" to be better. Let's see if Klipsch is missing out on an untapped market or whether they have voiced their speakers correctly for their intended audience.

These open-baffle designs are cool. But I wonder if a sonicly transparent shroud couldn't be added to the back, to keep the guts free of dust. Maybe some panty-hose material over an open wire frame? EDIT: 8:53 yes like that, but for the NXes and super mini.

It's good to have your point of view as a designer of higher end audio, on audio gear that has been reviewed by many. I was one whom chose to get these speakers based on the many reviews ( did not have access to demo), only to find that I did not find them as special. I'm still listening, and after three months, they have not changed what I hear. Your take on them brings me to my next point: since your level of expectation from speakers sounds familiar to me, and you pointed out some of your speakers design; how can we have access to more info on these ( specs and prices)? Thank you for your contribution to helping better educate on audio gear.

Just wondering. There is a loudspeaker kit sold by Swan and HiVi (on AMAZON), models 3.1 and 3.1A. That appears to be a fairly popular 3-way concept which Swan (M3) and Wharfedale (EVO 4.2) sell as completed bookshelf/ stand mounts.
The kit seems to have a popular following on the internet with many suggestions for upgrading and improvements. There are also several build out videos on RUclips.
I'm considering building a kit or buying the Wharfedale EVO 4.2 pair.
Do you have a comparable offering or commentable experience with these products?

The reason you caught my attention, was when you were measuring a line array of stacked small loudspeakers. I could see that you were basing your statements on fact and not just opinion. There is too much flowery language in a lot of hi-Fi commentary; I prefer your plain speaking technical approach. It is interesting to me as I have a diploma in electronic and electrical engineering and, though working in business now, I used to work as an engineer, for the first few years of my career.

Make me interested in your great kits. But I will wait for your upgrade kit for my 600m arriving form you Danny and then going for the servo controlled open baffle subwoofer to use with the upgraded 600m (I believe in a bookshelf and subwoofer as the optimal solution).
