    I just called GR and thought I was talking to one of the employees, the man seemed to be super knowledgeable, was inquiring about adding NoRez to the doghouse of my LaScallas. He continued with technical talk and improvements it would make. Found out I was talking to the man himself, Danny.. told him other than meeting PW Klipsch many years ago it was the biggest honor I have experienced in my audio journey. What a great guy. As backed up as they are now he took the time to visit for almost 15 min. For anyone considering their products, Danny is extremely knowledgeable and truly cares about helping people no matter what they own.

    OK, that's it. The least "handy" man in the world is gonna give this a shot, lol! I've got a pair of 600M's I picked up for a good price as an open box from Safe and Sound about a month ago, and while they do sound decent, that box is noisy and thin. I've quietly lurked on the outskirts of the DIY community for some time, and this is something I think I can handle. No cutting or finishing boxes, just a crossover. It feels like a safe starting point. Worst case scenario is I'm out a pair of speakers I really didn't NEED in the first place! I can't tell you how much I appreciate this series. I've needed a way to have my hand held through the process in order to feel comfortable doing an upgrade and this is it! I'm so interested in the DIY audio community but to someone who doesn't have the skills to begin with it's pretty intimidating. Thank you Ron and Danny. Sincerely.

      I totally agree with Joseph on this. I'm in the same exact position. The only thing I wish they would add to these videos is maybe some close ups of the work being done. This would just make it much easier to see what is being talked about during the process.

    Moving the camera in so we’re close to the network would help a heap. For example, seeing close up how you’ve twisted the wires before soldering would be very helpful. Also, layout of the network components, too. For the capable but inexperienced in these matters clear, up close picture are worth several thousand words. Tx for the videos.

    I completed the upgrade a couple of days ago and I have to say, it is a very worth while upgrade. My first impression, they sound really good. The presentation is much more in focus. The notes are more defined and the imaging is more precise. The bass seems to be a little tighter also.I have two pairs of these speakers so it’s was easy to do a comparison before and after.

      That would really help and if it doesn't take up much air space should not be a problem.

    • @rationalmartian
      @rationalmartian 4 года назад +1

      I couldn't agree more Impuls.
      I some years ago partially designed and built a smallish pair of Transmission lines. Well, as smallish as it's possible to build a real transmission line anyway.
      The Transmission line cabinet is automatically very stiff and dead. Especially with a small amount of bracing. I always used sections of the adhesive black tar sheet, like they use for sound deadening in vehicles, in the centre of any portions of inner cabinet that could resonate.
      You can rap on them till your knuckles bleed. You won't hear so much as a peep.
      I would never buy a commercial speaker. By the time you have sorted them out, you might have as well as just build em from scratch.
      The crossovers are very often shite, with crap components. Don't get me started on the shitty thin, ringing boxes they sell as supposed speaker cabinets.
      A musical instrument is designed to have a certain sound, flavour or voice. A loudspeaker, on the other hand absolutely should NOT. It should get out of the way, as it were.
      Most speaker cabinets under a grand leave something to be desired.
      OHHH BTW. I was very lucky at the time, I managed to find a bloke with FOUR corresponding/consecutive veneers from the same flitch, of the most gorgeous Birds Eye Maple. For ninety quid too. Bargain of the decade.
      So I finished them in matching Birds Eye Maple. Each one is the mirror image of it's Brother. Every side, even on the matching sand and shot filled box stands.
      But, YES indeed mate. A dead, non resonant cabinet is an essential foundation. If the box is shit, it doesn't matter what you stick in it.

    I don't know which of the crossover circuits are going to the tweeter and which one is going to the woofer, so for convention, I'm assuming that your "top" circuit on the diagram is going to the tweeter. I noticed that the negative input of the signal into the tweeter crossover is going into the "positiver terminal of the tweeter. Is this intentional or did you mislabel the output of the tweeter crossover and the designations of the output of the circuit should be swapped?

    Nicely done Danny. This project makes sense because Klipsch really hit a home run with its woofer. Just look at all the cheap shortcuts it made, yet even stock the speakers are awesome. It would be nice to have a short aside showing how to tame the horrid metal basket...maybe you already show that in another video. Paper mache with a string binding works well.
    I don't know why anybody would actually _keep_ the old, cheap (magnetic!!!) binding posts instead of replacing both, that seems silly. Did I misunderstand? Better to have folks test the difference on just the output plates of the speakers before doing all the other work. And your single-input wiring defeats biwiring and biamping, which in the days of good, affordable amps seems like a missed opportunity. But those are just quips, once more, well done!

      @@dannyrichie9743 I guess better stated, my question should have been- How do I figure out what components, for the network, I need in order to get a similar result with a different speaker since there will be a difference in the ratings of the components. I believe you mentioned this some where in the videos that the network won't particularly work for other speakers. I have a tiny bit of experience in doing the work, access to get the tools for building the network, but I lack any experience in knowing what components to get. I know there are a ton of variables here but for the network alone, Is procuring better quality components with the same ratings sufficient? It could be said that I'm the type that wants to have the $50,000+ sound but I don't have anywhere near the $50,000+ wallet.

      Well, to do a similar modification to another speaker requires the tools of the trade. I use the professional level Clio measuring system. It also helps to have any part necessary to test with. The knowing what to do is what takes years of experience and understand.
      However, replacing value for value with higher quality parts is easy to do and everybody does it.

      Tony Cheung ,, I see no problem with that wattage dryer but higher heat is better & faster to shrink... I use a 1500 watt hairdryer whenever I build my own speaker wires & it works just fine.. Of course get the best shrink tube you can. A lot of the knockoffs are junk...Try KnuKonceptz .... www.knukonceptz.com/mobile-audio/power-wire/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA89zvBRDoARIsAOIePbAdUIZHBNH4eX-XUuL9rm8ej9fLzBcjGycBrUNQc-VSB0I6HumY3bQaAg2ZEALw_wcB ...,, On eBay or Amazon too. He even has some of the thickest wire gauges you’ll ever see👍 Plus everything else for competition shows.. Best2You...Sorry, I guess he doesn’t sell tubing anymore just Boots...

    There no danger of the component wires touching the layout board, are they stiff enough not to worry about that. without having to shrink wrap them? If they won't touch then there is no need for an electrically insulated board right?

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 4 года назад

      The heat shrink is to seal the connections where the OFC wire is used. If the ends are left open then they will eventually oxidize and degrade the sound.

    Very cool!! Looks like you’ve done this once or twice before. Thanks for taking the time to show us how it’s done. Did you drill into or use the top speaker binding post area for the tube connector?

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 4 года назад +1

      To install the tube connectors (and that was shown in the last video) I just chased the only binding post holes with a slightly larger drill bit to open the hole up to 7/16".

    • @ialgarindiaz
      @ialgarindiaz 4 года назад +1

      When I did mine- I replaced all binding post with tube connectors. I used longer screws to hold the crossover to the binding post plastic mount, otherwise I could not hold the board in place due to the added length of the connectors. Removed all the crappy steel and drilled to fit the new connectors. It looks sleek and that combined with the dampening, refined the sound.

      You could build yourself a far better pair. By the time you have done fucking around, sorting it out, what will you have left?
      A shitty, thinnish resonant box, and maybe a pair of tweeters, that probably cost all of twenty or thirty quid a pair. Unless you are going to mess around just trying to improve things, you will be lobbing out the cross overs, wiring, bass driver.
      OHH yes, you'll probably keep the stuffing too.
      It drives me mad how shite budget speakers are built. They are all built down to a price.

    • @impuls60
      @impuls60 4 года назад +3

      I don't agree at all. Having built several cabinets, I can tell you that it takes days to get a decent cabinet finish. Also the components here is overkill so they won't change their value with the small heat buildup inside the box. An outside filter is for those who change drivers or network often is my opinion.

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 4 года назад +4

      The upgrade is pretty significant and for the hobbyist it is a lot of fun. And placing the crossover externally will be significantly more expensive if using good quality connectors like the tube connectors. And it wouldn't gain you anything.

    • @9XThunder
      @9XThunder 4 года назад +3

      @@dannyrichie9743 its the best upgrade i ever made with speakers, and i dont use connectors, cables direct to the drivers and from the amp direct to the crossover, every connector make the sound different.

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 4 года назад +4

      You are correct in that every connection or connector will have an effect on the sound. If you don't mind hard wiring everything from the amp to the drivers then that is a good way to go.
