lol when a movie so great even its interpreter gets recognized
You don’t understand. Yes, it’s a phenomenal movie but she’s getting (well-deserved) attention because she’s not simply translating what the cast is saying, her meticulous attention to every nuance and detail translates perfectly. She’s literally the best translator the world has seen so far
it is not related with the greatness of the movie. It is all about her translating skills
@@19htown that might be a stretch, I imagine working in political/law interpretation is a much higher stress job and we see none of it
@@19htown We all understand that. He was just making a joke.
The Asian Dude Obviously not
Remember, what makes her great interpreter is not only her bilingual skills, but also her attitude and positive personality. There are tons of interpreters with skills, but not many with great character
Lol how about how pretty she is?
@@squidwarden226 no like about how calm and happy she is when interpreting
I have character 😭😭
i LOVE normalising the use of translators. we shouldn’t be limited to who we are introduced to just because we don’t speak their language
She's an interpreter; they have different functions
Exactly! I’ve heard about studies that we often judge others’ intelligence on how well they speak our native language, which is ridiculous. I know people with high IQs that don’t know another language.
So when interpreters come in, they can bridge the gap between us and others, and can teach us not to judge just on language.

@@user-xv4he4mt4x, your issue with verb endings? Perhaps. Your tendency towards being incredibly rude by schooling random people on the Internet? Judging by your still-present comment--unfortunately not.

Yes indeed, she is very meticulous, calm and articulate on her interpretations and very clear diction when she talks. I love her. I became a fan of her. Very attentive too. Not surprising that she also got the spotlight because you cant help but notice her.
At first I was thinking is one of the actress. It's so good and give me a good vibe. FIGHTING!!

ummm..... it's Hollywood, not a breaking news. The questions for the interviews for late night shows are already given to the guests before their appearances, so you can call her translations a script already written and rehearsed prior to the interviews. My good friend used to book the guests on the late night shows.
@@JH-my8iw Well, the backstage, post-Oscar ceremony press conference was not pre-screened or rehearsed, and she did equally well there.
dhgemein2 questions asked at post ceremony press conferences are pretty much predictable, it doesn’t take genius to prepare answers to possible questions that could come up. And if you are nominated at Oscar, of course you are going to prepare your winning speech, but as you’ve seen they pretend as if she was spontaneously interpreting as he was giving speech out of surprise. And believe me, if you live in Korea for 10 years, your native tongue will change specially if you were a Korean National.
Now I understand the difference between a translator and interpreter.
er...translators do written work; interpreters do oral work.
translator only translate directly word to word, while interpreter also interprete language's nuances, choosing of different word, and probably jokes if possible
But, I saw a TV show in America calling her a translator.
interpreters job is way harder than translators. translators have all the time on their hand where as interpreters do the instant conversion of meaning of two sides; mind you instant, making sure the message is delivered exactly what one side wants to say. interpreting is not word to word delivery, it is the meaning. professional interpreters also study the proverbs in both languages and how they sound to equivalent proverbs in other language. really tough.
@@MaruSurfs yeah i was going to say he's confusing it with transliteration but that's not what I thought it meant. It's just good or bad lol.
"And she's also a great filmmaker..." Bong Joon-ho's must be a good person to extend the spotlight to his interpreter.
Yo she wasn’t a professional interpreter! That’s wild so that’s why ppl were saying things about how she’s breaking barriers with the way she translates Director Bong’s words
here is director bong praising her on stage : ruclips.net/video/Ww69VLCMxIs/видео.html
i love how you've 1400 likes with only two comments till now
Billy Casper I didn’t even realize I had 1400 likes lol
She deserves an award too! Was impressed when she was able to illicit praise and laughter and Bong's first line at the Golden Globes.
....😳 she's not a professional interpreter? Thought she has at least a master degree of translating and interpreting in a prestigious uni in the US, plus years of professional experience. I aspire to have that level of skill in a few years, hopefully..
Best of luck on your professional journey, but don't rely too hard on formal education! The best interpretation skills come from personal experience and familiarity with the language, such as when Choi used "go into it cold" to succinctly interpret a longer phrase.
I don't know if there is a concrete formal degree in translating. I've only seen translating degrees for ASL. But if yall got any more info on this, let me know.
There's a translation & interpretation major in my country in one of our universities but I'm not sure about other countries.
@@LionOfJudah613 agree. Nothing beats experience. I learned soo much by only 1 year of working. Not an interpreter tho (yet), I translate texts from English to my local language.
Edit: Thanks for the encouragement btw :)
@@ericaalvarado8592 For magister, I plan to apply scholarship in my country and Australia this year. I did my research and I think Australia National University has the best program for translation & interpretation. They have programs for both separately and together, and have many interesting courses. You can check them out :)
So, the best korean interpreter is not even a 'professional' interpreter? Wow. Thats a huge HUGE praise
kp. No one said she’s the “best”. She isn’t the first to get high praises for interpreting for someone famous.

I love how it didn't take her long to translate the context of what Bong Joonho is saying.. he totally understands English and appreciates Choi for her perfect interpretation of what he's trying to express, rather than literal
An important note is needed to be taken:
You don't have to have a professional title to be good at what u're doing
Which is a big theme in the movie too actually lmao
unless ya wanna be, like, a surgeon lmao
That’s the first thing I notice. I have never seen an Asian interpreter that can preserve nuances of the original speech and makes sense in another. Gosh, talent attracts talent truly. She can memorize a long speech and spit out a translation without hesitation picking words.
They are just the opposite of celebrities and it's refreshing. Love it. Cannot wait to see the movie in America.
you havent seen it yet? its been in theaters for months now, go check it out its worth whatever price you pay lol
Her interpretation is flawless.. I hear the Korean and then think to myself "how would i translate this?".. and then I listen to her and go "wow... that's perfect"
My eyes are really on her when she interpreted the golden globe acceptance speech!😍 she is awesome!👍😍
She is awesome!!! The best interpreter and so calm.
I love that they are highlighting her skill, normally people skip the "background" characters but she is acknowledged as integral to the press tour for such a thankless job I wish her the best 👏🏾💜
Almost always, i cringe at "interpreters" or even subtitles to Korean films because they're either done by pple who are not very good at either English or Korean. A LOT gets lost in translations, and the so called "interpreters" doesn't have the cultural background to understand that a direct translation doesn't always convey what the artist or the movie is trying to say.
Idk about other languages but cultural nuance carries heavily in Korean diction.
when an interpreter only directly translates the words with disregard for the intent and the content of those words, it often gives a very different impression to what the speaker actually intended. plus it's actually a skill set to have the ability to do it on the fly - it takes years of experience for some.
Sharon is excellent because she has the vocabulary, the cultural background from both languages/cultures to maneuver btwn the 2 cultures.
she's by far one of the best if not the best interpreter i've seen to date.
for what you said, I truly wish a lot of translator would do the same with subtitles, here on you tube and tv shows. if you check with subtitles on you tube, is either there is none, or it is auto translated, in which I find it very very bad/awful at times, they're never 100% correct especially on english speaking channels, that have english subtitles that I rely on heavily because I'm deaf/Hearing impaired. I relied on subtitles all the times when I'm watching whatever show I see. it be nice that they're 100% accurate with all tv shows and on any channels. we still got a long way to go in terms getting what we needed both subtitles and interpreters in any language.... for tv films and music...
The better interpreters and translators are able to contextualize. They are aware of who their audience is and what their knowledge limitations are, so they can change or add to their interpretations or translations in order for the target audience to understand. A simple example would be the translated sentence _I have an apartment in Solna overlooking Lake Mälaren_ . A reader/listener in the United States will have hardly any idea where this place is. An exceptional translator/interpreter will write/say _I have an apartment in the neighboring suburb of Solna just northwest of Stockholm overlooking Lake Mälaren, the third largest freshwater lake in Sweden_ . A literal translation of _He quit smoking cold turkey_ into Chinese will conjure up images of leftover cooked poultry to a Chinese reader. That phrase does not exist in the Chinese language, so the translated sentence will come out as _He stopped smoking by just suddenly quitting_ .
erin kemble me tooo im hearing impaired im feeling the same what you’re saying. I wish they would do something about this.
Sharon also works in film making, so she understands industry speak.
totally concur. she has the language skills, cultural background, cinema knowledge and very articulate. the best interpreter I've seen.
Finally the Limelight she deserves not because of the popularity of this amazing Film and fantastic cast/crews but how subtle and articulate, unambiguous she interprets the directors words, very best for her future and looking forward for more wonderful films from the award winning director.
Lol I screamed when the Director broke out in English. I bet you there have been many who really believed he doesn't speak a lick of English. So fun. Choi-ssi is so articulate and has a great listening ability. I would love to watch her work someday.
Fiki Maz director bong can definitely speak English but he needs someone to articulate his points to make it clearer. Interpreter choi is perfect for the job since she speaks the language as a director herself ❤️
Actually on most answers, Director Bong starts with English before going to Korean. When he was young, Director Bong did subtitles for English movies for his cinema club in college/university.
grace ababan oh for sure but you know how others think, just like they really think BTS don’t know English, outside of The amazing RM. Truth is they all do but not comfortable/self conscious to deliver, something I suffer from 😀
she's sooo iconic. all of her interpretations are so accurate and beautiful, she does it flawlessly and naturally.
Writing down on notepads should have been a MUST for any interpreter as sometimes the one they are translating for goes on a big paragraph of a speech and not properly translating that into let's say English for now will have us English speakers miss out of the person's personality. She really has been able to show the humorous and kind of quirky side of Bong Joon ho because of how good she is. Hope others take notice of the pad thingy...
Papa Riku taking notes is a common practice in the interpretation business
@KOREA NOW: Thank you so much for making a video about Miss Choi! I only saw her on Jimmy Fallon's show and the Golden Globes, but I was struck how articulate she was. To learn that she wasn't a professional translator blows my mind. Her filmmaker soul must've resonated with the souls of everyone in the cast; that's why it's not a struggle to translate their thoughts and feelings.
Also, that yes-she-nailed-it face that Director Bong did at 2:17 showed how important a part of his team she is!
Can't wait to see Miss Choi's films in the future. Her experiences now will surely inform her artistic vision in the films she'll be making.

Definitely choi interpretation skill and her pronounciation so perfect .. repeatedly good to listen too .. equally GRACE SHIN...too good...i will follow both of them to learn from their skill
honestly she is so beautiful :(( my heartouu
Such an impressive woman! Interpretation is a really difficult thing to do in the best of situations, because languages can't be translated 1 to 1. There's nuance, idioms, different ways of approaching a topic or idea. The best interpreters have a vast knowledge of not only the languages they deal with, but also with the cultures and subject matters important for the job. Formal training will definitely help a lot with getting your technique down, but there's so much beyond just linguistics, in order to be good at it.

She is awesome and pretty too
She inspires me to learn foreign language more! Hope she can achieve her director career too

I'm a interpretation and translation major student and interpretation is honestly so difficult, you don't only need to have a great lexicon in a 2nd or 3rd language but also in your mother one and in different areas, and having the skills to say what the person giving the speech is saying in a way that your public will understand and feel connected (because sometimes there are idioms and other words that just don't have a translation and you need to go around it trying to figure out how to say it) it's something that must be praised, it's honestly not an easy job and I'm just glad that interpreters are being recognized for their incredible work, since they're usually left in the shadows.
This woman's value shot up a thousand fold in Korea if not in the English speaking world that need a Korean translator/interpreter, she will be the go-to person for high level interpretation jobs like this, good on her!
Wow she is pretty and good at her job I might join her fandom
She understands the director well and communicates the meaning and depths of his words using interesting English sentences. What most interpreters do are direct translations with proper grammar, which makes it boring and sometimes awkward even. Kudos to her!
