    Last summer, we did a tasting at Wild Turkey. We tasted 101, Russel's 10, WT Rye and Rare Breed. I found 101 and Russel's very similar and, in fact, said the taste was so similar that my first comment was that Russel's was not worth the price bump. RB, however was a WOW moment and blew everything else out of the water. I absolutely love it. The bantering between you two today was fun to watch. You were almost giddy with your praises of the products. And, I agree, you need to become brand ambassadors for Rare Breed. I'll drive your tour bus. 😁

    This one was super fun to watch. Your excitement along with too many talking points to even comment on was very entertaining. I think Erin really brought up a wonderful point regarding the elevated scores and the factor of what the head to head actually is. Your grading 2 super high quality pours that you both very much enjoy. You set a base line high score with something that wows you on the first pour, then realize the second pour is just as great or maybe more. You have have to score it accordingly to what you have already set as a baseline. Josh gets the Nostradamus award with his comment @6:39..."They're two sides of the same coin." It was amazing how very accurate that was at the time. That one statement really sums up this whole blind tasting so perfectly.

    Was just in Ontario looking for NCF Rare Breed. Several LCBO stores had 750mL bottles of RB that looked the same as in the US. Finally asked a clerk at one if he'd ever heard of RB NCF in liter (or "litre") bottles. Was told it wasn't even on the Ontario liquor control board inventory list. He said people ask for the NCF several times per week.

    Always there for another Rare Breed affirmation! On the historicity of Erin’s 6 thumbs, did you shoot this before the three faves topical video from first of the month? Cuz I remember being shocked then that Erin gave the Stellum rye 6 thumbs (as she sometimes reminds me of my own like Olympics skating judging bias of saving those high scores for that bottle around the corner), as it inspired me to supplement my Stellum rye pick with a delicious bottle of the base rye. It wasn’t a head to head, though.

      If memory serves, this was the same bottle of standard Rare Breed in quite a few of the blind tastings previously aired, as we put it into several matchups--which is a testament to how the same bottle can hit you differently on different days. We always try to put bottles into at least 2-3 matchups to highlight this because it's always interesting to us to see that variation in scoring across different days.

    I don’t know if anyone mentioned this already, but the uncut/unfiltered is Duty Free only. You have to be traveling outside the US to obtain it. My sister saw it at the Miami Duty Free, but she couldn’t buy it b/c she wasn’t flying international.
    My cousin lives in London & I asked her to look for it when she laid over in Dublin. Unfortunately, they didn’t have it & the clerk told her that a lot of people will buy American Whiskey/Bourbon at the international Duty Frees & try to flip them because they are highly sought after in other countries.
    Wild Turkey has a 13 year old line called Father & Son that is also Duty Free only. Not really great & for some reason the proof it down to I think around 87 proof. You can taste the age/wood/oak. But taste is thin, doesn’t finish on the palette well at all.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад

      Duty free was the wording we were looking for but couldn't find during the recording. Great info Mike! We've heard about the 13 year Father & Son as well but suspected it would likely not be something of much interest to us due to the age and proof as you mentioned. Low proof and over-oaked isn't something we tend to enjoy all that much. Thanks for the helpful and informative comment!

      Very solid point. Perhaps that could’ve happened on first impressions, but palates were rested and cleared after first impressions and we started with Glass Two first afterwards on our official scoring. We always try to give each glass a fair shake by eliminating as much influence as possible.

  • @wynsteckbauer5480

    I didn’t read all the comments but it seems a good rule and my experience is non-chill filtered is better. Have you all experienced that as well or is it just the ones I’ve compared and if so why do companies chill filter? I’m fairly new to whiskey. Great channel!

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  Год назад

      Personally speaking we always like to see non-chill filtered, but it’s hard to say it makes a huge difference as there as so few products on the market that are available as chill and non-chill filtered for comparison purposes. Chill filtering removes the cloudiness that happens in a pour over ice (or of the bottle gets really cold), but it also removes some a little texture and flavor from the end product (at least in theory). Given the choice, we’d wish everything was non-chill filtered.

    The traveler exclusive is 🔥. I picked up a bottle 40$ for a liter!!! It took me a few duty frees to find one and literally tucked away behind some other whiskeys there it was. I Blinded it with my regular bottle and just by smelling them I knew which was which. I also knew by the palate and finish which was which. To me the NCF version has more vanilla which I prefer. The regular is a little spicier and the oaky finish is a little more drying. I give the NCF about a 9.5 and the regular seems to fluctuate for me between 8 and 9.5 depending on where my palate is. Sometimes I really really love the extra spiciness lol

      Thanks so much and great question! Considering the NCF is 1L rather than regular 750mL Rare Breed, and we’d pay up to $60 for regular Rare Breed, it stands to reason that $80 would be the equivalent price for 1L. Wet hay sounds like it may be a corked bottle, which does happen sometimes. We actually just had it happen on a recent batch of Wild Turkey 101 which was our first time trying the new bottling. Thought the new batches had gone south, but we bought a different 101 from another store and it's delicious.

    This seems to indicate a flaw in your scoring system. Love Rare Breed but would be willing to pay a little more for a LITER of non-chill filtered Rare Breed. Seems to me this is the more desirable bottle and should score higher. I will def look for this in duty free stores every chance I get.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад

      Love this comment, Ferd! Can you be a bit more specific on where you think the flaw is? Are you saying you feel as though the NCF Rare Breed should score a higher Real World Score over the standard Rare Breed based on it being a more desirable bottle? Or is there a different specific category you think the NCF Rare Breed should rate higher in compared to the standard offering?
      Obviously anything based on taste and opinions is highly subjective, but we always appreciate thinking about our scoring *and* ensuring that we're being as accurate and consistent as possible for the viewers that invest their time in watching. Good question. Prices can vary a bit on both, and the travel exclusive is often priced a little higher (from what else be gathered) due to the extra volume. $40-60 isn’t an uncommon range to see so we just labeled them at $50 in our sample key.

  • @xXGETR0CKEDxX
    @xXGETR0CKEDxX 2 года назад

    Honest question . I understand a pour can hit you differently on any given day . Especially when drinking blind. However, you guys do your consumer score after you know what the bottle is . So how does RB get one thumbs up one day, and another day, RB gets two thumbs up . In my mind , your consumer score should stay consistent, considering it’s only given after you know what you are drinking .

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад

      Great question! For us, the consumer rating is all about whether we'd actually spend our own money to buy a product again or not, and that's largely based on 1) how we liked the pour blind, and 2) how we feel about the value when weighed against the blind tasting after finding out how much a product costs. How a pour hits us blind in any particular tasting is a big part of that equation, and that can obviously vary day to day. Our experience non-blind with a bottle does come into play a bit as well *if* it's a product we find ourselves reaching for quite often outside of filming. Hopefully that helps clarify any consumer scoring "drift" between two tastings or over time. If not, definitely don't hesitate to follow-up for more clarification.
      We're always thinking about questions like this when it comes to how we rate things, and we're always trying to be as consistent as possible with what is ultimately a highly subjective scoring system (as any scoring system based on taste is) so as to provide the best feedback possible for anybody watching. Of all our categories, the consumer score is the one we take most seriously as it's the one we feel is most helpful for the viewers. In our eyes it's fine to say we really enjoy a pour, but spending our own hard-earned money on it is the ultimate endorsement. Thanks for the thought-provoking question this morning!

    How can you give a product just OK when it's not available for nearly everyone? Should definitely be thumbs down, no question. If you have to have a bottle sent to you and 98% of people or without a hookup don't have access it's thumbs down! You all do this with alot of stuff. Plus I'm guessing he knew what it was, so not really blind, he poured the match ups so he knew this one after tasting them both!

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  2 года назад +2

      Fair point on availability, but the value and quality is so high in our eyes that it bumped it up. We can agree to disagree if you don’t see it that way though.
      On knowing what the matchup is, that’s a firm negative. We’ve got near 100 pours in our blind pool. We could be tasting anything. We’re double blind always, and we also don’t try to think about what the matchups are. We just go with what the glasses give us on any given day.
