Hey there! I think it is great that you are taking the time to dive into this subject. It is something a lot of people are curious about when picking out their first, or next pooch. My grandmother has been a breeder for the last 10 years and I have recently began helping out, so I have seen quite a few puppies in my lifetime. I would have to say that the overall standard for male vs female characteristics in dogs is that the males are more affectionate, playful, and carefree. In contrast, the females are easier to train, more dominant, and much more relaxed. When I tell people this it tends to surprise them, and I am by no means an expert, but I believe that as humans we tend to have a stereotype that all males in nature should have very similar characteristics to a human male. I am currently looking into getting a german shepherd and was curious what people who own them have to say. Thanks for video! Edit: I also felt like I wanted to say something about how you talked about a male having a very close bond with one person in the family, in particular the “alpha.” I believe this to be true. I currently have 2 female dogs and 1 male and I have noticed a difference in bonds between the genders. My male is very close with me because I am the one who trains all of them and he sleep with me at night and doesn’t leave my side to much. Where as the females tend to spend time with everyone in the house equally.
Hey thank you so much for your great comment. I am by no means an expert either. I was going off my experience bringing up my first gsd pup. I 100% agree with the males more having a bond with one person, I experienced this with my dad and his male. Anyways thanks again and I hope you get your pup very soon
My male long haired see very easy going. He's been with 2 families before us and before we bought him from his previous owner we met him at the park to see how things went and he took to us right away. I've heard long haireds are family dogs anyways so that might explain it. He loves people in general though and pretty much fell in love with my dad's girlfriend the second he met her lol. He's also very affectionate, needs morning belly rubs before waking up and throughout the day will ask for pets and affection. He's my first purebred GSD
Actually females are overall more dominant and territorial, the difference is that females (if socialized, obviously) will only pick a fight if they really have to. Males tend to showcase their strength more, which is why you typically see two males fighting. But they are usually pretty harmless. Females, eventhough they fight less (if you’re lucky your female will never end up in a fight) tend to fight more serious.
I think Shepherds in general will bond differently with all family members, so they'll have a close bond with all, but different. I think the ladies challenge commands more than the males do, in my experience--the ladies exercise their independent judgement. Girls are very active, very vigilant!! Our one male became a lovable couch potato who always did as he was told. However, as a puppy--around 9 months old, Xavier was a terror on 4 paws (ooh, he was nuts! He dug up the yard like a gopher)! But he calmed down around 2 years old. Our ladies were mature by 1.5 years and consistent in their personalities.
I've found the exact opposite to be true. The males I've had have been more eager to please than the females. The females have all had a rebel streak. The only one I have that is somewhat aggressive with other dogs is a female. The males all get along with everyone. I have American and West German Showlines. The males are more intimidating. I used to read translations of German books about the breed that said that the males tend be easier to handle and get along better with other dogs. They have this whole thing called social suppression of estrus, so a female would be required to be much more plucky to survive and pass on her genes.

German Shepherds are not for inexperienced dog owners, have you considered getting another breed to start? Prove yourself with an easy breed-meaning that you can HOUSE TRAIN the dog. This is no small task. You will need to prove you will regularly feed the dog, groom the dog, keep up with vaccinations, spend a lot of time playing and getting the dog socialized? THEN, ask for a big dog, known for being naturally protective, that can literally kill a person. THINK ABOUT THIS. Also, is there a room in your parents home where you can separate the dog? I use my kitchen because there is a dog door to outside.

I had both male and female German shepherd. My female was more possessive with other dogs being around me. And females ARE more stubborn. My female gsd was way more stubborn then my male. Lots of people just assume that males are more stubborn because of being more powerful or testosterone. But that's just simply not true. Yes males tend to be more aggressive more protective of female owners but female German shepherds or anything female in general, and people will say I'm sexist but by that logic you can say you're sexist for saying men or males are more aggressive; but females of any species in general are more likely to be stubborn. Sorry. That's a fact. Its literally hard wired in the brain of females. Females are just more hard headed, that's just a fact. Just like males are hard wired to be more dominant and aggressive. My aunt even told me that "boys are more stubborn" I said no females are. She was like "you'll see." And when I got my male gsd I saw that she was wrong. It's ignoring biological facts just like if you were to ignore that females are more nurturing. And I wouldn't say anything about the males if you never even owned a male.
@Darth Traya Yeah there's always exceptions. Never said that. Have you ever had more then one female? I think your ignorant if you ignore biological facts. I've known many people who owned several gsds and say the same thing. Dont fucking assume I'm wrong based on your one dog. Your probably biased because you have a female gsd. Like my aunt that said males always fight, but females too. Infact when I was with her one of them was picking on the other but she refused to acknowledge it. So I could also use your words against you. Stop denying biological facts. I never said all females, but females more less tend to have certain issues males have certain issues. What if someone came up to you and said "I have a male German shepherd amd he is not aggressive at all." Would you automatically change your opinion on one dog? Of course you wouldn't. Because you would still probably believe based on a majority of german shepherd males you'd say that dog was an exception and still hold your belief that males are usually more stubborn. It does also depend on how the dog is raised. Maybe yours friend didn't raise their dog right? Sounds like it If he didn't want to listen and get into everything. Sounds like your ignorant and stupid af if you think I said all females. And yeah you may say it's more the individual but you know genetics can play a role as you say. You know males are more aggressive and protective in general. Because of biology testosterone etc. Youd probably agree females tend to be more nurturing and gentle particular with children. Of course there's exceptions but that doesn't overrun the rule. And females are usually more stubborn because its nature and biology. I never said all females had to be like this. Or all males had to be like that. But you need to generalize based on facts. We all can agree german shepherds are very protective of their owners and are loyal. If we are going to generalize the good things based on facts because german shepherds were bred for these traits, to be alert protective and loyal in order to sheep heard which is what their original purpose was and then later for other things such as police work, guarding etc. You must also take in consideration the cons too based on biological facts. And this not only goes for the breed itself but also certain lineagepersonality. Males tend to be better for certain things because of slight more aggression. Females tend to be more docile with kids because of their female instinct. We can't only generalize the good things. If we are to do that we have to generalize the bad things too. The pros with males is they might be more intimidating and aggressive so could be a better guard dog. Or they tend to bond with one person if you want a companion for yourself not your family. The pros of females is they're more docile. Especially with kids or even smaller animals. Except for my female 🤣 but generally females are more docile and nurturing with kids or puppies or smaller animals. But there's also cons to both. And again you can't only generalize the pros. Males tend to be overly protective and and females tend to be more stubborn. They're is always exceptions though, but it doesn't over right the rule. Stop spreading dangerous information based on your feelings. And stop projecting your ignorance onto others. You refuse to ignore biological facts. Based on your one female. Your the one who thinks one exception over rights a rule. And that's not how life works. You should pick which breed, gender, or linniage based on general biological facts. Youd seem like a person who would say "its doesn't matter get whatever you like" a dangerous mindset. Yes people can choose and should choose based on their needs or situation. And need to know the facts. I'm getting a second dog soon, it's going to be female because I have a male. And the same sex tends to fight more male or female. No garentee the same sex will fight but it's more likely so. Am I ignorant because I feel it might be better to get a female in my situation? No. But youd be ignorant for saying its foolish to judge it even if its based on facts. Do some research. Before you ruin lives with "genetics don't matter as much as the individual" They're animals first. Then dog. Then breed. Then individual or personallity. You obviously are one of those that view its mostly personality that rules the dog first. Well I got news. The individual in dogs is not greater than that of humans. Dogs live by genetics and instinct not humans. Look in the mirror l. Your the ignorant one. Because you ignore science and nature and put your feelings over facts. And got offended reading my comment pointing out information that this guy said based on his own feelings and not facts.
@@Lucythegermanshepherd Yeah that's the only thing I thought I should piint out. But yes males are more aggressive, in general. That's why they're better guard dogs. My female was more possessive my male is more protective. He doesn't really like people he doesn't know, my female loved people but not kids lol. She was a rescue so idk her history. either it was she wasn't socialized or had a kid mean to her.
Lucy is a beauty and the same size as my Grace who is a year and a half old. I have a hard time with her not jumping on us when we come home. We've tried several things but nothing has worked. Do you have any suggestions? We do have a collar with a remote that we got because the house we are renting has no fencing on the sides of the house and she was chasing the wild rabbits that were on the lawn. The remote has a beeper and that has helped tremendously, she is listening much better, even when the rabbits are around but we still can't get control of her jumping on us in moments of excitement.
Hey she just a super excited pup. I think some good obedience training would be a great place to start. Look up a local trainer with a good rep. They will teach you stuff that you will use forever.
I just lost two female GSDs this year within 2-1/2 months of each other, Czarina and Olympia. They were both 12 yrs, 3 months. Czarina was alpha and watched the inside; Olympia the diva watched the outside where she liked to lay on the deck. I now have a 1-1/2 yr old GSD male, Nabucco, and a 5 yr old GSD female, Ophelia. The boy erupts when necessary, but is also needier. Ophelia's only been with me two weeks, but she's already alert, gives warning barks, and I can tell she's another Olympia. I've owned dogs for over 30 yrs, and have found the females have a more independent, yet loving nature, which I think is one reason I have found them to be more protective. But with GSDs, they're a breed unto themselves. Training them properly, along with showing them love and affection, is the key to their loyalty and loving you back.
My 6yr old male is the most loving dog iv ever had, he is a bit of a mummy's boy. I put his fantastic personality down to him bein 8 weeks old when I got him and come from a family who had 8 kids, 3 we're under 5yrs old.. Then we did puppy classes so hes super friendly. However he is an excellent gaurd dog, protecting his family is natural to the Shepherd breed
I've had 5 German Shepherds, 4 males. My female is more stubborn than any male. Males are so easy going, imo. But only having one female, it's difficult to say.
German shepherds are adorable dogs very loyal, loving caring and amazing champions and beautiful and very smart dogs and their good family dogs and perfect workers
My farm house is ,100 yards off a busy farm to market paved road and the last 35 years I've owned both male and female GSD'S, all have gone to doggie heaven of natural causes. So at the moment I have none, but will take either one. Lucy is looking wonderfuly great, stay safe and a a big howdy from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas USA 😊 ❤️
Lucy Lane the Queen of Balmain Is it ok for them to be jumping, because don’t they get some type of bone disease which could shorten their lifespan, German shepherds have really strong legs and it could mess them in the long run if they get too jumpy.
I have a female Malinois Shepherd Mix & she's very protective. Also can be a little stubborn as well lol she's a good 60lbs so not too bad for a female.
hey can you suggest which one should i get...... soon Im getting a working line gsd and i want the following things in my dog: 1- very affectionate , cuddly and loyal 2- very obedient 3- very loyal and naturally protective (good for guarding purposes) 4- easy to train 5- very clingy 6- good for jogs and cycling trips 7- bigger in size..... please suggest which gender i should go for!
@@nikunj_aio2149 Fantastic! Make sure you train him properly and not let him train you. Male GSDs do everything to train their owners and become the dominant of the household.
@@AA-uf3bl actually he is about to turn 10 weeks old and I have trained him to sit, speak, stay, food permission,to bite a thing when I use the word attack, the leave commands , the center command and to get into the heel position and walk with me a bit

I like GSDs more as they more more adaptable to any situations. BM are very driven for work 24/7 with a very high prey drive. They are like a GSD but turbo charged haha
@@Lucythegermanshepherd I have had to summer holiday babysit both, BM only when you have time to tire them out, god their prey drive is over the skies. Gsd is much calmer and observative. BM tends to act before thinking like most Belgian Shepherd dogs. Gsd is more calm and thinking before acting. This is my opinion after many years babysitting different types.
Do you think that if my family would get a german shepder that I could create a strong bond whit it even tho my mom and dad are the "dominant" one in the house. If I would spend most time training it
Impressive dog.. I’m getting a female puppy soon and I’m hoping I can train her to do what you did near the end with the clicker with a snap of my fingers🤞
Iv had 4 GSD, 3 females 1 male, I prefer females in my opinion they are better watchdogs, my first one female Bo was an absolute brilliant dog who watched over my son when he was small, if he ever left from the yard we lived on a farm at time she would nudge him back inside the gate she never left his side, never needed to walk her on a lead just one click of my fingers she would be back walking on my left side, the male was extremely docile not at all more aggressive at all. Our third dog female Belgian shepherd x German shepherd was more of a very anxious high strung dog who only had eyes for my daughter classified Velcro dog who no matter what anyone else told her to do only my daughter could control her when younger.

Hey Janet I would recommend looking at Victoria stilwells videos on RUclips, I have found her training to be amazingly effective and trained my three dogs with her methods :)
Help hoping you'll get this message!! I have 24 hrs. I have a male GSD. He is almost two. Also have three small dogs, one male and two females. I have an opportunity to get another GSD from my males mother and they are ready this week. I'm meeting them tomorrow and she will only have 1 male and 3 females left. I'll have to make a decision almost right away who and which I want. Although I have a couple small female dogs all my other pets, cats, birds past and present have been male so I always lean that way. However the main reason for considering a fifth dog is an actual playmate for our male Shepard. My small dogs ignore, and don't really like him and definitely don't play with him. Can you help me decide. I want what's best for him but worry about our bond as well as the other girls in the house. Or maybe I shouldn't do it at all lol I'm not going into it without thinking it completely through.

Hey great argument. I did state this was just my opinion and not fact. I was also working with the experience I had bringing up Lucy.
@@Lucythegermanshepherd Thank you so much!
Hi bro which one is good for family and kid's GSD male or female puppy I'm confused?
Wich os better for guard and protection the male or female German Shepard?
I think a male is better suited
Lucy Lane the Queen of Balmain why you think like that? 🤔🤔
What is the name of the song in the video?
Not sure, I got it off epidemic sounds
My 6yr old male is the most loving dog iv ever had, he is a bit of a mummy's boy. I put his fantastic personality down to him bein 8 weeks old when I got him and come from a family who had 8 kids, 3 we're under 5yrs old.. Then we did puppy classes so hes super friendly. However he is an excellent gaurd dog, protecting his family is natural to the Shepherd breed
Hi! I just wanted to say that ur dog is very cuteee!
Keep safe Lucy (and her hooman) ❤️❤️❤️
Hey thank you guys and your too
Lucy Lane the Queen of Balmain I’m gonna get a gsd in June 1st of 2020 love you Lucy stay safe
Love her, very well behaved dog. Which breeder did you get her from? I am from Sydney, thank you
Hey thanks heaps. Shoot me a dm on instagram
I have found female dogs are just better natured animals easy to train and just better attitude
joe blow very nice dog. Super.
I've had 5 German Shepherds, 4 males. My female is more stubborn than any male. Males are so easy going, imo. But only having one female, it's difficult to say.
What's that song playing when you fed her the chip?
No idea sorry
Before vid: I want a GS, but other breeds are great too.
After vid: I NEED a GS right now
hahahaha
@@Lucythegermanshepherd tell me like we hooman we categories dogs do they categories us too? Like white black brown haha I'm not being sound crazy
Awww I really hope you can get another GSD oneway. I bet your out would of been amazing dogs. Have a wonderful weekend guys oxox
Just Adorable, which every you get, I have a female and I love her to death, i'm sure I will feel the same to a Male as well. Theyre just beautiful.
They are both amazing pups
I had one growing up, getting a female this month ! I cannot wait!!!
Hi I want a German shepherd does Lucy jump much
Hey yes Lucy loves jumping. Mainly into water
Also can be a little stubborn as well lol she's a good 60lbs so not too bad for a female.
hey can you suggest which one should i get...... soon Im getting a working line gsd and i want the following things in my dog:
1- very affectionate , cuddly and loyal
2- very obedient
3- very loyal and naturally protective (good for guarding purposes)
4- easy to train
5- very clingy
6- good for jogs and cycling trips
7- bigger in size.....
please suggest which gender i should go for!
Their gender doesn't matter; training them does.
@@AA-uf3bl ok thanks ... Btw I just bought a male
@@nikunj_aio2149 Wow, you've already taught him quite a lot!
Such a lovely girl! I'm about to get one too ❤️
I’ve been dog sitting an 1year old females German and she has been a blast. I wish she was my dog but sadly I have to leave in a week when her owner comes back in town. I’m going to miss Roxy ❤️
Where do I get a gsd

Hi I was the first to like also Lucy is my favorite dog 🐕 🐶
your so awesome thank you so much
I always have females- always rescues- the female I have now weighs 100lbs of lean muscle❤️
wow thats amazing. Such a beautiful sounding pup.
You've trained Lucy to perfection!! I commend you!
What do you like more a Belgian Malyn wall wall or German Shepherd.
If I would spend most time training it
I have 2 male German Shepherd's, now. I grow up w/ female German Shepherd's. Both r AMAZING😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

Thanks for this I’m getting a German shepherd on Friday 😝🙏🏼
Like how you start your intro videos👍
Hey thanks heaps
I liked German Shepherd
They are great dogs
Do u daily give Lucy training ?
Hey yes I do
Nice
Hey thanks heaps
My GSD is 2 months+ .Named him DEXTER. 😊
Love that name
19 seconds ago 😂 I put notifications on
haha so speedy
Lucy Lane the Queen of Balmain, Yep!
Well trained GSD. Why doesn't Lucy wear a collar with her tags?
Hey thanks, She does if we leave the house. I mainly take them off for video.
@@Lucythegermanshepherd same here , my friends have done gsp tracking comes with which they leave it on when they leave , is it really good 👍 or

Hello and cuddles for Lucy she is beautiful. I do agrer with you German Shepherds are the best .. 👍
You are so kind
Female names : Athena , Carmel , Amy , Stacy. Male names : ace , Rex , max , bear
They are great names
How do I break my two year old from jumping on me when trying to get my attention.. and jumps powerfully beside me.. I see this as trying to play , yet not good behavior as she tries to be alpha.
I am a 64 year old female.
What food do you feed Lucy?
Hey I think you just need to correct your pup for any unwanted behaviour. I think getting a good dog trainer to show you the ropes will be a great investment. I feed Lucy black hawk kibble supplemented with raw
Lucy Lane the Queen of Balmain thank you !!I had a male years ago that looked so much like her.. He was my ❤️!
I waited years before getting another and only did so to get her out of a bad situation at 6 months .. no two are alike!.. which formula/ protein source of black hawk holistic food are you feeding Lucy.. ?
Hey Janet I would recommend looking at Victoria stilwells videos on RUclips, I have found her training to be amazingly effective and trained my three dogs with her methods :)
Naomi Ryan thank you.. will do!
Omg she’s gorgeous ❤️ I have a male gsd and love him so much
I hope your okay to 😄

Hey thats alot of animals already. Personally I wouldn't get another one unless you have loads of room and time. But if thats the case I would get a Female for your Male. What sis you end up getting ?
Your dog is sooo cute I’m missing my own German shepherd, her name is Paris she’s only 8 months old but she’s on a 1 month training she should be back on the 5th of September 😩
I'm Getting A Shepherd Puppy Tomorrow

That can work
First of all Miss Lucy (Lucie here in France) is a clever and nice dog Lucy means light in Latin Language. . For me the question will be different I would like to get a female firstly and a male. Should they come the same breeder or should I choice 2 different breeders. Maybe one in France and one in the West Germany.
I'm a tiny single woman😂 just looking for a furbaby to feel safe with. I had my eyes set on male GSDs(but I think females are awesome too), do you think they bond well with women??? Like will he see me as alpha? I don't know if that's a weird question. 😅 And I hope it makes sense. Would it be better for me to get a female?
My gurmen sheperd female
Is just like a Male big and strong and just a dog that is ment for protection.
