I had dogs all of my life until I had two German Shepherds in the 1990s. I didn't "own" them. I wasn't their "master". They were my kids, my friends. They were family. I had to put them down because of medical issues. Large pain. Khan, my big boy, had his head in my lap as the vet was looking for a vein. He looked up at me and licked my face just before the vet stuck him. He knew. My friend and I cried. I never had a dog after that. I still apologize to them for having them put down. I know they understand. I'm 80 and I know they are waiting for me somewhere. I won't be alone.
i'm so sorry for your loss. i lost my best friend last year, he was an 11 year old giant gsd and I was 8 when he arrived in my family. He was like a brother to me. Now I own two other german shepherd but it's not the same thing, I hope he will still be waiting for me in heaven when my time will come.
I REFUSE TO EVER PUT MY MAX DOWN, NO, AIN'T HAPPENING, if hes in pain he can get strong meds and expire right in the warm home he loves. with me and his fav toy near him.
Ron, I am now 66 years old. I completely identify with what you have shared. I am a retired veterinarian gone educator and social worker. I put my precious "Phinney" down at around 11 years old due to a terminal, painful medical condition. I could not live to see him be consumed by pain, disability and fear. It was the hardest thing I have ever done (in spite of the hundreds of euthanasia's I have executed in my professional years - pun intended out a sense of shame), but somehow, I knew that it was the right thing to do; I could hear the Universe telling me to: "Be compassionate!" Yet, to this day, I have a tragic sense of guilt for having "played God". He was the Light and Joy of my life; we were kindred spirits from the moment I got him as a puppy. He was ALWAYS with me, wherever I went or whatever I did. He was the "curative factor" when he visited the homeless people who came to our addictions center/shelter in New Hampshire. His gentle, confident, trusting and responsive nature created instant rapport and joy with our clients in ways we humans could never have archived. I felt a sense of pride to see him work his magic! He was well socialized and educated, which made all the difference. He was a perfect "*GENTLEman*. I echo your love and the attitude you have for your beloved friend. I too, never presumed that Phinney was ever my "property", nor I, his master. We were best friends. I was his human partner here to help guide him through a human and sometimes cruel world: to keep him safe and happy. Like you no doubt, I have myriad treasured memories, and I miss him so very much. I put him down in 2002, and I have never had the courage to get another friend like him. I have had many perfectly wonderful shepherd dogs in my life on the farm, but he was most special to me alone. I have entertained the notion of finally getting another puppy, but I still have to work through the fear that if I predecease him, it could be like abandoning him to a frightening and unpredictable world. (Hopefully I can strategize a means to keep this from happening should I die first.) Your post so moved me by your selfless, compassionate and loving attitude. It reminds me of a favorite passage from the "Outermost House", by Henry Beston - “We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. When I was a child (about 10) there was a stray German Shepherd in the neighborhood that everyone called Shadow. Growing up with parents who were animal lovers, I grew to love animals myself. I felt so sorry for Shadow and would sneak leftovers out of my home and feed him EVERY SINGLE MORNING on my walks alone to school. Shadow would walk me to school every morning and be there after school to walk me home. He was my protector and guardian angel. I pray that when I transition from this life to the next, I will see my Shadow again.

Shadow is the name of my GSD puppies biological father. All black GSD. A shame that nobody adopted your Shadow, especially your parents being animal lovers and seeing how the dog chose you as its person.

I once heard an expression that went like this. "A well trained German Shepherd Dog will make you forget any other breed exists" I think that about sums it up.
When I was in my mid-teens my brother in-law got the family a retired Military GS. The first time I saw him he looked like a wolf, a will trained one at that. Best damn dog in the world. It's been over 50 years ago that he has been gone and he still holds a place in my heart like no other
That's been my experience also! I had dogs all growing up, into adulthood, as did many in my family. Mostly labs and mutts. When I met my now-husband, he had an elderly GSD that lived to be 13 or 14. He said when my dog passed (a mutt that was great with people but not other dogs) that he wanted another GSD. I was a little leery bc I knew how much activity and training they needed, but I also knew how much he wanted another, so I agreed. Ever since then, I can't tell you how many times I've said "now that I've had Rocco (our GSD), I can't imagine ever having another breed." It's almost hard to understand how incredible they are until you've had one for yourself.

crypto maniac mine will be pretty big too I think. He’s 5.5 months and 60lbs. Hopefully training places will start opening now. He’s only had mine and I’ve never had a dog before but watching Roberts videos we are in pretty good shape.
@@karennorth9318 Robert has helped me a ton with understanding my German too. I always had a golden growing up, this is my first Shepherd and they are definitely a little more work than Goldens. But holy cow they are amazing breeds and I feel like I like them more than Goldens now.
Yes, my German shepherd is beautiful. She is sable in color. I’m older now and I was left with her. She is very high driven and extremely strong. I cannot handle her no more. She is 4 years old. If anyone knows of someone who would take her, care for her, love her, I will give her away. Everyone will be screened to make sure that she has a great home.
when I was 5 years old my GSD, who was 4, we grew up together, was with me 24/7, one day at my uncle's lake my father took her for a walk, when he returned to where I was at the lake, I was on an air mattress floating about 50ft offshore. Well, she panicked and swam out to me climbed on the air mattress and started barking at people on the shore to let them know they needed to help get me to safety (I was fine btw). We lost her that same weekend to a car when she got hit chasing a cat across the main road. I have had 4 other GSD's since, and I loved them all, but Ginger has always held a special spot in my heart.
I used to have a "working" shepherd as a pet. To give you an idea of how much it takes to properly exercise one it got 2 miles of walking in the morning, then 5+ miles running when I got home, and another two miles walking before bed time. That;s on top of play with things like balls and dog frisbees. At weekends I used to hike a lot. Covering 40 miles walking of a weekend was common. Monty had his own backpack with some water his dish and some food. I carried the rest. You can load a fit shepherd to a maximum of 10% of it's body weight so 1 litre of water plus 4 cans of wet food (the water content is important when covering those distances). Monday and Tuesday most weeks Monty would just be asleep most of the time recovering from the weekend. He lived to near 17.
I have had a shepard since i was 5, i am now 57. They are the greatest breed on the planet. When i was 6 my yonger brother caught his snow suit on fire, our german shepherd kept jumping on him and saved his life. No training just instinct. Fearless dogs.
My mother is in a wheelchair and her new personal assistant came to our house one morning when my mom was home alone with our gsd. Our dog had never seen the assistant before and she had the keys so she just came in and our dog started barking like crazy and she jumped on my mothers bed and stood over her body and protected her. My mother didn't like our gsd that much but after that incident she fell in love with her.
i have sleep apnea--i couldnt breath but i couldnt wake up--my heart was racing, pounding--felt like it would explode then suddenly my GSD started body slamming the side of the bed and woke me up, when i opened my eyes his face was a few inches from mine staring intently at me. worried.
Years ago, we had our AC serviced and my german shepherd ran straight to the door, went to my mom’s side and started barking at the AC guy. The door was open but she kept her paws indoors- not one paw passed the threshold. That moment made my mom fall in love with her.
They are crazy loyal. I have 4 and they surround me whenever I go outside. Mine are all boys though. They say females are smarter. I've never raised a female, but would love to one day.
@@kygal I've never had a male dog, but i can certainly say female shepherds, which i've got 2 that are currently puppies, are crazy smart! the breed in general is very intelligent though. not sure about the science behind it w/ if one gender is smarter or not, but i can say for certain they are amazing breeds whether male or female!
For people who haven't had a GSD, all I can say is the breed is one of a kind. You have to own and raise one to know what we GSD owners are saying...Unlike any other dog breed on the planet!
Malinois are definitely not more intelligent than GSD. I’ve owned both. Malinois are much poorer at decision making. Watch the vids of them on here getting easily confused when it comes to target selection and misdirection. Doesn’t work on GSD, they’re like a homing missile. U.K. police are switching back to GSD due to the temperament and misplaced aggression issues with malinois
100%!! And once you have one, you can never look at any other breed the same...but I wonder if other people feel that way about whichever breed they have an affinity towards.
@@colinsmith1412 My friend is a police dog trainer and trains both. I do not think they are dropping the malinois - they are easier for women handlers as they have to demonstrate being able to pick them up. As far as I know - GSD's were never stopped being used.
@@colinsmith1412 Interesting comment re UK police - also UK police try to be friendly with the general public and GSDs look more 'cuddly' and approachable for the general public - unless you are running away with somebody else's possessions (I imagine anyway!)!
The GSD have good reasoning abilities. My dog, when I had broken my ankle, knew I could not fetch the portable phone so when I could not walk, she'd go get the phone for me though I had never taught her and no one else had taught her, to do this. Likewise when I walked with a cane, if it fell, she'd pick it up for me. But ah... when I am well, "you don't need the help now, Mom." She is very loving and we have had her now for 11 years. She is quite healthy and a very sweet girl. She is very attached to me and the feeling is mutual. Love her like anything.
Mine learned to open doors and turn on hose spigots just by watching peoples hands. He could never figure out how to turn a spigot back off though, so he'd always wake us up in a panic to keep the water from flooding the back yard The obedience was always funny. He knew he wasn't allowed in the house without permission so he'd just open the door and stare at me
@Magma92 this can be said of any pet. Other than an African Grey Parrot, which can live for 60 to 80 years, most pets are outlived by their human owners. It's the circle of life.
@Magma92 It hurts very much when one of these magnificent animals passes. In my heart I know I've always given them lots of love, good food and a comfy bed. My shepherd now was a rescue on her way to the pound and is the first female I've ever had. She knows when I'm at the door instead of a stranger and she doesn't maul me when I come in but, waits for me to come to her and we both give each other a kiss, hers are a little wetter than mine :-) The one in my thumbnail was Gus, he had the greatest personality and was the most intelligent and gentle dog I ever lived with. He's been gone about 7 years and I still miss him.
@@raulleyva2187 Shepherds are chewers, freeze some wet washcloths, at 4 mo's he's teething and the washcloths will help him with that. Training and socialization is VERY important for the whole life of the dog. Some puppy obedience classes at like PetSmart will help a lot now and in the future. GSD's are VERY smart and I've been amazed a few times of what they're capable of, they need a purpose and a lot of praise and rewards when they do something well. I hope this helps a little and don't give up, he'll be your best friend :-)
I had a German Shepherd, he recently passed from lymphoma. He was the best dog ever. Lucky I was able to rescue him from his previous owners that neglected him and his needs.
Same here!!!! I have 2 right now, one was free from a family friend that was accidentally bred. One is a full registered s $500 and wouldn’t trade that back in a heartbeat
This breed is a legend.. Right from the days of my childhood, this breed has mesmerised me.. There is no other dog, which matches to its demeanour, personality, gait and intelligence... Like they say " There r dogs, n, there r german shepherds" I had a female 27 years back, which can sniff and sense my dad arriving home, when he is some 150_200 feet away.
My GSD is approaching 14. Has back leg nerve issues but still alert, protective and loving. The GSD is a wonderful dog. My wife and I both had GSD growing up so we knew the dog we wanted from the get go.
From experience, there are only a few things you need to know. 1. The good- they are very friggin smart. 2. The bad- they are very friggin smart. You will understand this better when you've had one for a while. 3. They shed. 4. They shed. 5. They shed. 6. None of that matters- they are the best dog in the world!
Great video! The GSD is my favorite breed! If you have never had one, and wind up sharing your home with them, you will be amazed at how crazy intelligent they are. They never leave your side, are severely loyal and loving and will bond with you for life. Truly amazing little soul mates. They are very easy to train. Believe it or not, my girl was trained to go outside after 4 days. She started asking at the door by scratching at 10 weeks of age, after 4 days. They are truly amazing. She is sleeping next to me on the couch as I type this; where else would she be? She’s now 3 years old and my soulmate.
I have 4 of them. They are the most loyal breed I've ever had. There is no doubt in my mind that they would give their lives to save me. Mine won't let me walk outside alone. When I take the trash to the curb I'm surrounded. When I work in my garden, I'm surrounded. Lol. They won't leave your side.
I love GSDs. Used to have one that stood 28 inches at the withers and weighed 126lb, he was an absolute genetic freak, a powerfully built muscular dog from a pedigree bloodline. Very obedient and so well trained that even the police wanted him. Hell I still miss him.
I have one. She is sable in color, very strong and smart. A great protector. 4 years old. I was left with her and I’m older now. I cannot keep up with her high spirit. It’s not fair to her to be on a chain while outdoors. I have a neighbor that moved in next door to me with small kids that come on my property and she has been here for 4 years. They just moved in and it’s causing a lot of problems. I’m afraid that she might get a hold of one of them and not just bite but mull them to death. She doesn’t think that they belong there. I can’t stop the kids from coming onto my property. I have tightened the chain so she can’t reach them. The mother simply doesn’t watch her kids. If anyone is interested get a hold of me and I will give her away.
Aw, I hope you’re doing well with a new gsd. My Ozzy died at 12 and a half last January. We just put a deposit on a puppy that was born on May 3rd. Picking up 4th of July weekend. Wish you all the best, it’s so hard, I miss him everyday.

Spot-on video on the GSD. We are on our 4th GSD over 30+ years now. Our current GSD we really focused hard on socializing her in different environments as a puppy (crowds, around other dogs, loud noises, etc). It is great being able to take her out and she ignores all the small dogs yipping at us when we walk down a sidewalk, yet she is very social with any dog that isn’t aggressive. As mentioned, you MUST be committed to spending time exercising this breed multiple times per day, AND working their mind too! Another interesting fact about the GSD: you will never go to the bathroom alone again...they want to be with you everywhere!! 😀
I got my GSD at 7 weeks old. Pretty early. But I love Talion. He's now 6 months old and he's looking more and more like a badass every day. Hope you're having fun with yours.
Some things to get used to, keeping your food (and his) out of reach, Some are escape artists, and invest in a good dog brush and a vacuum cleaner, that says it can deal with dog hair. Other than that, they will love you to death and loyal to a fault. When the world is against you, they will stand by your side
I have a all black GSD that I got from a bad situation at 8 months old. I normally would never get a dog outside of a registered organization but she had people interested in her that gave me back yard breeder vibes. I was not going to let that happen so I brought her home and she is my best friend. 9 months later I can’t imagine not having her but boy does she take work!!! I took her to a balance trainer and it has made all the difference for both of us to learn from him.
I too have owned and trained German Shepherds my entire adult life. (I am 70). They are magnificent creatures who allow us into their lives............and worm their ways into our heart in the process. You will never have a more devoted, loyal and fiercely defensive friend. Yes they shed............but the good news is it's only once a year. And by once a year..............I mean ALL YEAR LONG. I've stood on many a podium in the Schutzhund arena and my life has been enriched beyond words by these incredible animals. But mostly, more than anything else, they are friends.

You will not be disappointed if you work with it and train it good mine is smarter than my kids at times and a very good watch dog that the bark is definitely worse than the bite I really don't think she would bite anyone but really sounds aggressive when someone s at the door
got my 1st gsd from a local pound in 2009 he was a year and a half when I got him. He is now 11 and still goin strong no health probs so far and the best dog I have had. So smart & protective he is always right next to me I mean like 6 inches away every where I walk or sit. Wakes me up at 6am every day. He is my best friend. jesus do they ever shed tho! got to take the good with the bad. great with all my friends and anytime someone walks by my house he is on point and letting me and them know he is here. They are great dogs my next dog will b another gsd
Well-done video about my favorite breed. The best dog I've ever known, the one that "got me," was a male named Solomon. He was a sickly rescue puppy who grew into an unexpectedly beautiful dog. I am an amateur dog owner. Sol made me look like I knew what I was doing. Sol was all the things GSDs are known for and more (he remains the stuff of family legends). I lost him in 2010 to complications from DM back before it was widely understood. I've never stopped missing him. I currently have another breeder cull--an adult GSD with mild hip dysplasia. Selah is a lovely girl with a kind heart (great with my grandchildren) and easy to have around. Not Solomon. No other dog could be. But she too is a credit to her breed.
I've had eight GSD's in my life and the one in the picture is the one I miss most. Passed at 6 y.o. from seizures. He was an exceptional gentle giant at 120 lbs
Grew up with cats, always had cats. Then met a guy, got my 1st dog, a GSD, a working line one too LOL Boy did I not know what I was getting myself into. Ditched the guy, kept the dog and wouldn't change a thing because my boy brought out the best in me by motivating (nice word for it lol) me to be a strong leader, helping me be stronger as a person, and got me off my lazy arse everyday. Super intelligent, keeps me in check to be disciplined and consistent by challenging me every now and then lol
I love my German Shepherd, I put the work in on him from the get go! Basic obedience and small group on leash socialization classes. And of course watching your videos! Balanced training worked very well for him- he’s a great dog my family loves. He’s a happy, loyal, smart, easy to train high ball drive dog! He loves people but honestly not other dogs except his live in older dog companion. I have had to work on trail walking and growls to strange dogs (aggression) , but he has learned “no growl” and “leave it” commands well now! We pass without issue! I’m ok with that I’m just aware we won’t ever be doing dog beaches or dog parks! But I think he won’t miss out he just wants me and to play on our property! He is the best dog and great with his commands and knows so many words! Like I say “house” and he goes to door to go in. My very first Gsd and he has my heart!

Now looking for new buddy, and probably ready in January... Reason for the pos: Your advice has helped me decide my future path, and I want to say thanks. Active as all get out, but, at 60, I have decided to back off my original decision to take on a Malinois, and go back to GSD. Thanks for helping craft this decision. I don’t think I’d go wrong either way, but your advice has helped guide my efforts towards the working line GSD because of the end goal and job ahead for him (support dog for wife who has Parkinson’s, and schutzhund with me, and family dog for all. That was one of the best I have watched about GSD's, I have owned and trained many from rescue until it was my time to raise one from a pup and this information was 100% right on, Now I'm 60 and a working dog would be more then I could handle so I have just purchased a show line to join me and my other 2 GSD's that are CDX trained with my female getting old and with hip issues I am bring one last dog in behind her, by the time he will be 10 I'll be 70 so that will be game over for me, I dread the day not having a dog, maybe when the time comes I;ll have to go back to older rescue dogs.
Excellent video! Thank you! For 20 years I’ve had Standard Poodles and still love them with all of their happy antics and intelligence. They’re great dogs and it’s been 2 long, sad years since I lost my boy of 15 yrs. I can no longer manage poodle coats at this point in life. My daughter brought a female black GSD puppy here and she’s sure changed everything around here. She’s only 3 1/2 months old and super smart, attentive and full of funny antics herself. Everyday is filled with joy and lots of play time. I’m so amazed at her. She already keeps tabs on everyone in the family and has to check on all of us if we leave the room. Talk about loyalty! Wow! She’s won all of us over! Chloe is her name💕 I love the breed!
My granny got one was a month older than me. He was so good and we adored each other. So, we got a white female for our house, and she was also amazing to grow up with in childhood. She was a cuddle when I was unwell. She once protected me once from another dog attacking me. Then we got sheba who was such a baby 🤣 she was very protective of our home. She also as she got older and we had kids brilliant with them. My niece has downs syndrome and sheba almost like she new would lay and curl around her when she was a toddler and had bad muscle strength. Never left my daughters side either. Now they have ruby, another big baby, awful good breed for families xo
My favorite breed of dog. I grew up with GSDs and currently have 2. I lost one due to old age a few years ago - she was 16 years old. My dogs are highly trained and they are very well socialized with people, kids, other animals. Please do not purchase any dog, especially a GSD from a puppy mill or backyard breeder. This video is spot on about the breed. Very well done.
Hey I just wanted to say a huge thank you. I’m my GSDs first home after he was rescued from an animal hoarding situation- he was supposed to be a foster and we couldn’t bare to let him go. He’s as sweet as can be, but I’ve often been left clueless as I grew up with labs and goldens and didn’t know what to do with this anxious, energetic, Velcro dog. After your video we’re now deep into training and considering signing up for our local search and rescue program together.
Just one other cautionary thing I would have mentioned at the end of the video: THEY SHED a lot. I’ve had four DDR/Czech sable working line in succession and the shedding is real.
I have three Czech/DDR shepherds now, one is a senior so he drops his coat slower. I have to sweep out hair balls from my patio weekly. That’s with regular brushing. 😂
Yes they shed!!! Robo vacuum is a must. A battery powered hand held vacuum for behind doors and those robo vacuum missed areas. You failed to mention “nose art” on glass patio doors. Another added bonus is you have the honor of the daily picking up poop in the backyard.
One more importing thing about getting one of these animals, make sure you get it in spring, so you can take it out daily and have it meet people when ever possible, so that they become less aggressive towards people. The bond between a well treated GSD and it's master and family is very strong and the drive to protect it's pack is amazing.

Had GSDs all my life. Since I was 8 years old, I’m 41. Never had an alarm installed at home. Never had a break in. Never had a problem with the dogs. Best dog overall in my opinion. Am amazing guard. Gentle. Intelligent. And loving animals.
I have to laugh my wife gets ups packages at work or at home doesn't matter the address as long as her name is on the package is stamped large dog one of the best security systems out there and nobody can hack it
We had a white German Shepherd and she was 15 when we finally had to put her down. We also took in a stray off the street and he had food allergies to the point where it cost us a small fortune to keep him healthy enough, we had him for only three years and had to put him down because he had kidney failure. And now we have another young male that is just the most caring dog ever. I am in high hope that we have him for a long time to come. At that point we might be too old to have another dog of large size. I never was a fan of the GSD breed until my husband got one and at that point I remembered why. I vacuumed every day a ton of white hair, now i am sweeping and cleaning the hair every day as well, but seems normal black and tans are not as obvious as white hair. Those dogs are not for everyone, they high energy and need a lot of work out and they shed all year round and twice as much in fall and spring. Nice video. The only thing I would disagree with is the part about pet quality GSD being either a washout from breeders of working/show or from a BYB. There are serious breeders out there for 'pet' GSDs. They are dedicated to providing healthy (hips/elbow/DM testing), solid dogs that integrate well into modern families. I do wholeheartedly agree that no matter what 'kind' of GSD you get - be ready to meet its needs.

My favorite breed. My dog Sherman is the best dog in the world and we work and play at least 3 times a day, even if I am not feeling well. I always feel better when we train together
Great video, one of the best in explaining the GSD. Being born in Germany and spending most of my childhood there, my family has always owned GSD's. As an adult, I've always owned two sable's at a time with a sieger show line and one from a working dog background. I would do anything for my GSD's and often times, they are seen as my equal companions. I love their high emotional intelligence and character. Personally, I only get my GSD's from puppies, so I can ensure they are trained and socialized properly. From the time they are puppies, I take them everywhere with me and introduce them to any and all stimulation possible. I even take them shooting with me to stop any fear of loud bangs or fireworks. As a former Military Police K9 handler and now a Sheriff's Deputy, I've witnessed these "guardian angles" first hand. They would and do die for their family or pack. I no longer handle dogs because I get too attached and hesitate to put them in harms way. I just can't view them as "a piece of equipment."
I have a German shepherd she the best dog I ever had when she was just a puppy I trained her on the leashed after 2 days she already walking on the leashed and also I taught her how to sit and stay still need to train her so Thay are easy to train also she very friendly to my. cats and she very over protective of my family also when she meet new people.... she barks at them and after a while she stops and be friendly to them.....also she follow me everywhere......and over protective of my little sister and brother and my cats because she attack any dog that's near them.....and also she now 1 year old....,😊🙂😄😀
I picked up Christine from a home in rural Michigan. She was six-eight weeks old. She was always around people and thought everyone loved her. She grew up with a poodle mix and he thought Chrissy was his puppy. We would take them to a 10 acre property and when they were older let them run the woods. They had so much fun. When I loudly called them they would be back within 10 minutes. My children are horribly allergic to dogs even poodles. No more dogs for me. I really love them.
My GSD pup is now 4 months old. Everyone told me they were different from any other dog I've owned, and they were right. She is a LOT of hard work, but worth every second of it! She is a totally amazing pup...
My wife and I have been German Shepherd owners for many years. There is no better breed. They make great pets, they are fearless defenders of the home and family, they are very intelligent and take to training quickly. In our opinion, if it's not a German Shepherd, it's just a dog.

I have never had a GSD before but am getting a retired working dog in April, he will be 8 when he retires, I previously had a retired Belgium Shepherd ( Alpha) who was extremely demanding and at the risk of being disloyal to my Rottweiler probably my favourite dog, Gunnie has never lived out of a kennel so living in my house will be new to him, he has worked as a general-purpose dog for 8 years so I plan on giving him the best retirement ever, I've been watching a lot of videos on GSD and I can honestly say I don't know why I didn't get one earlier
When I was a kid I had a friend with a GSD. When people would come over the dog went in back bedroom bc they said dog was protective. I nvr forgot that. Years later my ex wanted a GSD.. and I told him I would leave if he got one not bc I didn’t like them but bc I knew he would end up in a bedroom too and I knew I would hate myself for that. Someday ..maybe I will be good enough for one but I am not good enough a trainer in that way. I will keep learning. Thank you for speaking the truth to people.

Miss Sasha Deol They’re not social because they’re not properly socialized when young, just like people. Any dog will act calmly around people and other dogs if they’re properly exposed to them.
@@afcgeo882 I've had 2 shepherds, 1 at 6 weeks which was definitely socialized from the get. Puppy classes galore, meeting everyone in sight. Just ended up being overly protective and didn't want anyone near anything he cared about. And sometimes they can be 1 person dogs.
Notice the arch of their back. Avoid those with sloping backs and low hip lines (show lines) Always get a GSD with a straight back, no matter what the size. Then it won't matter if it's a working line, or show line.

I have 4 German shepherds and they are the epitome of man's best friend. They are such a loving breed and excellent protectors. Everyone in my community (most are dope dealers or drug heads) knows that I could tape a 100 dollar bill to my door and nobody is brave enough to come after it. 🤣💜
I rescued my girl from a soldier deploying to another station; she is the best thing that has happened to my sons and I. She still required some training and as a lifelong dog guardian, I was able to train our girl with ease as she's a very smart girl. She loves us and we love her and can't imagine a moment without her in our life.
Loved the video. I think it would've been worth mentioning that GSD's are also really forgiving. When you realise that you've made mistakes training them and try to change, they will adapt to you and follow.
my grandfather was an old soldier and when he left yhe army he was lucky enough to bring home an old army dog a german sheperd called NELSON ime to yung to remember NELSON but ive heard tales of his bravery and prowes and how much the soldiers loved and respected these service dogs 😆
The German Shepherd is the best dog in my opinion. After getting my first one many years ago I will never have a different breed. So good with kids and saying they have high intelligence doesn't do them enough credit. They learn so fast it's almost unbelievable.
I saved a 2 year full blood German Shepherd from a kill shelter "Pound" this Christmas in Oklahoma while I was visiting family. She "Arrow" was picked up with a chain around her neck and some dangling down. No owner came forth and no one adopted her so on her last day I took her. She was scared of humans but loved other dogs. So I adopted another to help her feel more comfortable on our trip home to Oregon. She has come so far. She is so loving and smart. I work with her everyday. On the other dog, my friend wanted a dog so he took him "Bo" and they see each other all the time. Bo is a Cattle dog/Border Collie and Very smart. These dogs have new lives...like the move Dog's Purpose.
I have had 4 German Shepherds in my life. They make great pets when exercised and properly cared for. They have all lived in my house so i had to hoover the house every day and groom them on a daily basis. They molt a lot and there was always hair around !! I loved them all and was heartbroken when they passed.
I just love them. I have a bond with them. Have had them since childhood. Many moons ago. And every new one seems to have the same soul. As another one. Its like you don't really have to train them. They seem to know. Sounds odd. But it's a very strong connection Same as when we stare at each other. At the moment I have a 9 month old. Straight back called Oonagh.
My big girl is half Malinois and half German Shepherd. She combines the best sides of both breeds. She is my second dog. My first one was also a German Shepherd and she was my friend for a very long time until her illness with cancer. My wife and I tried to live without a dog for one year. But then we, that means our family decided that without a dog it is no real life. We drove 300 km to find our present friend and life in our family started again.
I lived for over 20 years of my life with those kind of dogs. Starting out when I was like 4 and them around me until my mid twentys. All of them were awesome dogs and really good with anyone, you could bring them anywere. Sad part, all of them died to cancer.
I have German Shepherds my whole life. My best friend was a German Shepherd. We grew up together since my birth. he died when we were 13 years old. I had a lot of other dogs after him. But he will always be the best. I currently have two German Shepherd females. and one more Pitbull. The Pitbull I adopted after it had been abused for his stupid ex-owners.
My sable GSD is my first dog that’s all my own. He amazes me everyday with how intelligent, eager to please, obedient, and friendly he is. He is a social butterfly. I’m trying to get him into protection/obedience training to make sure he’s not too friendly and doesn’t protect me like he should. He’s 8 months and I can’t wait to get in and see him flourish! Our German shepherd, Gracie, will be 9 next week, and she is my “once in a lifetime” dog. A sweeter, more loyal, or more goofy friend could not be found. She’s also incredibly stubborn, but that wasn’t unexpected.
My gsd is a freak, 10st , 72 to the shoulder sable working class big baby most of the time but can be volatile when comes to the vets hates being on a lead but unfortunately due to a inexperienced handler with another gsd at a training class he can be unpredictable with other dogs now very difficult to socialise him now as people see his size and instantly stay well clear.i keep him busy with agility although he hates jumping and close protection work which he loves . Best dog breed in the world
All you have to do is take care of this canine and thier loyalty, love and protection of your family is paid back 100 fold....they are truly magnificent animals.
What I love most especially with my GSD in particular she is always alert , she will stay looking out of the window for hours to insure no one or anything is in her yard .
Ive had a pair of shepherds a few times. All black. Two times german lines and one time American. I just got a female American puppy. I learned best not to pair up females. And two males can be a hassle too. My last one will be a solo dog. The german lines are generally more hard or tough and have a higher drive. Ive learned for pet American german shepherd. They all have their own personalities. I train using positive reinforcement. When being naughty they are trying to tell you something from the earliest ages on. Correct the naughty stuff and mean it but no hitting. Just have to mean even if its restraint or putting lead on etc… they are not the kind of dog you should argue with. They will win. They’re a strong determined breed and really not for inexperienced unless the new owner gets proper help training. Personally i devote more time to tra8ning starting at 8 weeks and all the important stuff is down by 16 weeks. in the deep end. They can deal! In bed room with me at night…not kennel. Kennel when i have to leave to do something a dog is not welcome for. Its two months of constant supervision. I think of whining as communication. You just need to mean it and not ask for it unless you’re sure you can enforce it ( in an assertive fair way….again leash….long lead….noisy can of coins to shake…. Set of keys to throw at their butt if desperate) do all you can in a positive way but naughty is naughty. Once i correct i ignore them. They might repeat. I correct in a more assertive way….the “i mean it way. “°Then ignore….etc….ignoring at the right times really works. I often see them settle with some toy they choose and roll around playing with it after such a sequence. Thats when you stop ignoring and reinforce with treat sometimes but mostly with lots of enthusiasm and praise and rubs….of course then the puppy starts doing the jumping up ( bad) and biting (bad) and all excitement stuff and so yeah….seems like you messed up a good thing but youve got to do it. Then start over…. Giving them the fun attention for good behavior with them would be like asking to sit after praising enthusiastically and treat or Play tug….interrupting jumping and biting before it starts. This could be throughout puppyhood ….depends on the dog. Each dog is basically wired a little different. Balanced is best but doesn’t always work that way. Mine needs more socializing than usual for example. Shes not a super tough one for a german shepherd but very active and yes determined. Shes actually on the mellow side! And its a lot of dog anyway.
We got two puppies who are half GSD half malamute. They're as smart as a GSD but are as stubborn as a Malamute. They aren't suspicious of strangers and they talk back constantly! They're a ton of fun :)
Personally think the working line straight back type are far better to look at and have more intelligence. Just my opinion. Working lines are awesome for the right handler, but for most urban lifestyles a (quality) Show line is perfect. West German Show line bloodlines are a good example, hard working, good head on their shoulders with just a little less drive compared to their Working line cousins.
I understand now that I have a working line why people have showlines as pets. I couldn't agree with you more. I love my working line sable straight back and I find he's far more handsome than what is typical American Showline.
@@jeffk464 agree. Some slopeback dogs seem to me to be caricatures of type. Perhaps they are more sedate because they lack musculature in spine and hock area. Inbreeding.... Then when undesirable results occur dogs are given up. Or suffer problems as result of search for type. Just my observation. Breeding dogs for ideal ain't perfect ....
@joseph stallings Is the hip dysplasia less common with the straight back type? I just started researching GSD, and I had noticed some dogs looking like their haunches were sloped vs not, but didn't realize there were different lines.
I have a german shepard and husky mut. He is the most loyal and loving dog I've ever had. He gets a bit over excited some times. The "Growls" he makes during play time can throw some people off. He is very vocal and loves talking to us when he knows we are talking about him.

I had dogs all of my life until I had two German Shepherds in the 1990s. I didn't "own" them. I wasn't their "master". They were my kids, my friends. They were family. I had to put them down because of medical issues. Large pain. Khan, my big boy, had his head in my lap as the vet was looking for a vein. He looked up at me and licked my face just before the vet stuck him. He knew. My friend and I cried. I never had a dog after that. I still apologize to them for having them put down. I know they understand. I'm 80 and I know they are waiting for me somewhere. I won't be alone.

i'm so sorry for your loss. i lost my best friend last year, he was an 11 year old giant gsd and I was 8 when he arrived in my family. He was like a brother to me. Now I own two other german shepherd but it's not the same thing, I hope he will still be waiting for me in heaven when my time will come.

Ron, I am now 66 years old. I completely identify with what you have shared. I am a retired veterinarian gone educator and social worker. I put my precious "Phinney" down at around 11 years old due to a terminal, painful medical condition. I could not live to see him be consumed by pain, disability and fear. It was the hardest thing I have ever done (in spite of the hundreds of euthanasia's I have executed in my professional years - pun intended out a sense of shame), but somehow, I knew that it was the right thing to do; I could hear the Universe telling me to: "Be compassionate!" Yet, to this day, I have a tragic sense of guilt for having "played God". He was the Light and Joy of my life; we were kindred spirits from the moment I got him as a puppy. He was ALWAYS with me, wherever I went or whatever I did. He was the "curative factor" when he visited the homeless people who came to our addictions center/shelter in New Hampshire. His gentle, confident, trusting and responsive nature created instant rapport and joy with our clients in ways we humans could never have archived. I felt a sense of pride to see him work his magic! He was well socialized and educated, which made all the difference. He was a perfect "*GENTLEman*. I echo your love and the attitude you have for your beloved friend. I too, never presumed that Phinney was ever my "property", nor I, his master. We were best friends. I was his human partner here to help guide him through a human and sometimes cruel world: to keep him safe and happy. Like you no doubt, I have myriad treasured memories, and I miss him so very much. I put him down in 2002, and I have never had the courage to get another friend like him. I have had many perfectly wonderful shepherd dogs in my life on the farm, but he was most special to me alone. I have entertained the notion of finally getting another puppy, but I still have to work through the fear that if I predecease him, it could be like abandoning him to a frightening and unpredictable world. (Hopefully I can strategize a means to keep this from happening should I die first.) Your post so moved me by your selfless, compassionate and loving attitude. It reminds me of a favorite passage from the "Outermost House", by Henry Beston -

When I was a child (about 10) there was a stray German Shepherd in the neighborhood that everyone called Shadow. Growing up with parents who were animal lovers, I grew to love animals myself. I felt so sorry for Shadow and would sneak leftovers out of my home and feed him EVERY SINGLE MORNING on my walks alone to school. Shadow would walk me to school every morning and be there after school to walk me home. He was my protector and guardian angel. I pray that when I transition from this life to the next, I will see my Shadow again.

When I was in my mid-teens my brother in-law got the family a retired Military GS. The first time I saw him he looked like a wolf, a will trained one at that. Best damn dog in the world. It's been over 50 years ago that he has been gone and he still holds a place in my heart like no other

That's been my experience also! I had dogs all growing up, into adulthood, as did many in my family. Mostly labs and mutts. When I met my now-husband, he had an elderly GSD that lived to be 13 or 14. He said when my dog passed (a mutt that was great with people but not other dogs) that he wanted another GSD. I was a little leery bc I knew how much activity and training they needed, but I also knew how much he wanted another, so I agreed. Ever since then, I can't tell you how many times I've said "now that I've had Rocco (our GSD), I can't imagine ever having another breed." It's almost hard to understand how incredible they are until you've had one for yourself.

crypto maniac mine will be pretty big too I think. He’s 5.5 months and 60lbs. Hopefully training places will start opening now. He’s only had mine and I’ve never had a dog before but watching Roberts videos we are in pretty good shape.

Yes, my German shepherd is beautiful. She is sable in color. I’m older now and I was left with her. She is very high driven and extremely strong. I cannot handle her no more. She is 4 years old. If anyone knows of someone who would take her, care for her, love her, I will give her away. Everyone will be screened to make sure that she has a great home.
when I was 5 years old my GSD, who was 4, we grew up together, was with me 24/7, one day at my uncle's lake my father took her for a walk, when he returned to where I was at the lake, I was on an air mattress floating about 50ft offshore. Well, she panicked and swam out to me climbed on the air mattress and started barking at people on the shore to let them know they needed to help get me to safety (I was fine btw). We lost her that same weekend to a car when she got hit chasing a cat across the main road. I have had 4 other GSD's since, and I loved them all, but Ginger has always held a special spot in my heart.

I used to have a "working" shepherd as a pet. To give you an idea of how much it takes to properly exercise one it got 2 miles of walking in the morning, then 5+ miles running when I got home, and another two miles walking before bed time. That;s on top of play with things like balls and dog frisbees. At weekends I used to hike a lot. Covering 40 miles walking of a weekend was common. Monty had his own backpack with some water his dish and some food. I carried the rest. You can load a fit shepherd to a maximum of 10% of it's body weight so 1 litre of water plus 4 cans of wet food (the water content is important when covering those distances). Monday and Tuesday most weeks Monty would just be asleep most of the time recovering from the weekend. He lived to near 17.

I have had a shepard since i was 5, i am now 57. They are the greatest breed on the planet. When i was 6 my yonger brother caught his snow suit on fire, our german shepherd kept jumping on him and saved his life. No training just instinct. Fearless dogs.

My mother is in a wheelchair and her new personal assistant came to our house one morning when my mom was home alone with our gsd. Our dog had never seen the assistant before and she had the keys so she just came in and our dog started barking like crazy and she jumped on my mothers bed and stood over her body and protected her. My mother didn't like our gsd that much but after that incident she fell in love with her.
i have sleep apnea--i couldnt breath but i couldnt wake up--my heart was racing, pounding--felt like it would explode then suddenly my GSD started body slamming the side of the bed and woke me up, when i opened my eyes his face was a few inches from mine staring intently at me. worried.

Years ago, we had our AC serviced and my german shepherd ran straight to the door, went to my mom’s side and started barking at the AC guy. The door was open but she kept her paws indoors- not one paw passed the threshold. That moment made my mom fall in love with her.
They are crazy loyal. I have 4 and they surround me whenever I go outside. Mine are all boys though. They say females are smarter. I've never raised a female, but would love to one day.
@@kygal I've never had a male dog, but i can certainly say female shepherds, which i've got 2 that are currently puppies, are crazy smart! the breed in general is very intelligent though. not sure about the science behind it w/ if one gender is smarter or not, but i can say for certain they are amazing breeds whether male or female!
For people who haven't had a GSD, all I can say is the breed is one of a kind. You have to own and raise one to know what we GSD owners are saying...Unlike any other dog breed on the planet!
Malinois are definitely not more intelligent than GSD. I’ve owned both.
Malinois are much poorer at decision making. Watch the vids of them on here getting easily confused when it comes to target selection and misdirection. Doesn’t work on GSD, they’re like a homing missile.
U.K. police are switching back to GSD due to the temperament and misplaced aggression issues with malinois
100%!! And once you have one, you can never look at any other breed the same...but I wonder if other people feel that way about whichever breed they have an affinity towards.
@@colinsmith1412 My friend is a police dog trainer and trains both. I do not think they are dropping the malinois - they are easier for women handlers as they have to demonstrate being able to pick them up. As far as I know - GSD's were never stopped being used.
@@colinsmith1412 Interesting comment re UK police - also UK police try to be friendly with the general public and GSDs look more 'cuddly' and approachable for the general public - unless you are running away with somebody else's possessions (I imagine anyway!)!

The GSD have good reasoning abilities. My dog, when I had broken my ankle, knew I could not fetch the portable phone so when I could not walk, she'd go get the phone for me though I had never taught her and no one else had taught her, to do this. Likewise when I walked with a cane, if it fell, she'd pick it up for me. But ah... when I am well, "you don't need the help now, Mom."
She is very loving and we have had her now for 11 years. She is quite healthy and a very sweet girl. She is very attached to me and the feeling is mutual. Love her like anything.
Mine learned to open doors and turn on hose spigots just by watching peoples hands. He could never figure out how to turn a spigot back off though, so he'd always wake us up in a panic to keep the water from flooding the back yard
The obedience was always funny. He knew he wasn't allowed in the house without permission so he'd just open the door and stare at me
I'm 64 and have literally had GSD's ALL my life. I'm very use to them and know how to raise them. I wouldn't want any other breed
@Magma92 this can be said of any pet. Other than an African Grey Parrot, which can live for 60 to 80 years, most pets are outlived by their human owners. It's the circle of life.

@Magma92 It hurts very much when one of these magnificent animals passes. In my heart I know I've always given them lots of love, good food and a comfy bed. My shepherd now was a rescue on her way to the pound and is the first female I've ever had. She knows when I'm at the door instead of a stranger and she doesn't maul me when I come in but, waits for me to come to her and we both give each other a kiss, hers are a little wetter than mine :-) The one in my thumbnail was Gus, he had the greatest personality and was the most intelligent and gentle dog I ever lived with. He's been gone about 7 years and I still miss him.
I have a 4 month German Shepherd, he bites a lot and gets aggresive, it happens in episodes but not all day, any help will be highly appreciated ☺
@@raulleyva2187 Shepherds are chewers, freeze some wet washcloths, at 4 mo's he's teething and the washcloths will help him with that. Training and socialization is VERY important for the whole life of the dog. Some puppy obedience classes at like PetSmart will help a lot now and in the future. GSD's are VERY smart and I've been amazed a few times of what they're capable of, they need a purpose and a lot of praise and rewards when they do something well. I hope this helps a little and don't give up, he'll be your best friend :-)
I had a German Shepherd, he recently passed from lymphoma. He was the best dog ever. Lucky I was able to rescue him from his previous owners that neglected him and his needs.

This breed is a legend.. Right from the days of my childhood, this breed has mesmerised me.. There is no other dog, which matches to its demeanour, personality, gait and intelligence... Like they say " There r dogs, n, there r german shepherds" I had a female 27 years back, which can sniff and sense my dad arriving home, when he is some 150_200 feet away.
My GSD is approaching 14. Has back leg nerve issues but still alert, protective and loving. The GSD is a wonderful dog. My wife and I both had GSD growing up so we knew the dog we wanted from the get go.
From experience, there are only a few things you need to know. 1. The good- they are very friggin smart. 2. The bad- they are very friggin smart. You will understand this better when you've had one for a while. 3. They shed. 4. They shed. 5. They shed. 6. None of that matters- they are the best dog in the world!

Some of them really don't like being on their own too. Mine was OK with it but some really hate it or even worse get anxiety.

Great video! The GSD is my favorite breed! If you have never had one, and wind up sharing your home with them, you will be amazed at how crazy intelligent they are. They never leave your side, are severely loyal and loving and will bond with you for life. Truly amazing little soul mates. They are very easy to train. Believe it or not, my girl was trained to go outside after 4 days. She started asking at the door by scratching at 10 weeks of age, after 4 days. They are truly amazing. She is sleeping next to me on the couch as I type this; where else would she be? She’s now 3 years old and my soulmate.

I have 4 of them. They are the most loyal breed I've ever had. There is no doubt in my mind that they would give their lives to save me. Mine won't let me walk outside alone. When I take the trash to the curb I'm surrounded. When I work in my garden, I'm surrounded. Lol. They won't leave your side.

I love GSDs. Used to have one that stood 28 inches at the withers and weighed 126lb, he was an absolute genetic freak, a powerfully built muscular dog from a pedigree bloodline. Very obedient and so well trained that even the police wanted him. Hell I still miss him.
After 12 years of having a best friend and closest family member, not counting the best protector anyone could have.

I have one. She is sable in color, very strong and smart. A great protector. 4 years old. I was left with her and I’m older now. I cannot keep up with her high spirit. It’s not fair to her to be on a chain while outdoors. I have a neighbor that moved in next door to me with small kids that come on my property and she has been here for 4 years. They just moved in and it’s causing a lot of problems. I’m afraid that she might get a hold of one of them and not just bite but mull them to death. She doesn’t think that they belong there. I can’t stop the kids from coming onto my property. I have tightened the chain so she can’t reach them. The mother simply doesn’t watch her kids. If anyone is interested get a hold of me and I will give her away.
Aw, I hope you’re doing well with a new gsd. My Ozzy died at 12 and a half last January. We just put a deposit on a puppy that was born on May 3rd. Picking up 4th of July weekend. Wish you all the best, it’s so hard, I miss him everyday.

Spot-on video on the GSD. We are on our 4th GSD over 30+ years now. Our current GSD we really focused hard on socializing her in different environments as a puppy (crowds, around other dogs, loud noises, etc). It is great being able to take her out and she ignores all the small dogs yipping at us when we walk down a sidewalk, yet she is very social with any dog that isn’t aggressive. As mentioned, you MUST be committed to spending time exercising this breed multiple times per day, AND working their mind too! Another interesting fact about the GSD: you will never go to the bathroom alone again...they want to be with you everywhere!! 😀

Some things to get used to, keeping your food (and his) out of reach, Some are escape artists, and invest in a good dog brush and a vacuum cleaner, that says it can deal with dog hair. Other than that, they will love you to death and loyal to a fault. When the world is against you, they will stand by your side

I have a all black GSD that I got from a bad situation at 8 months old. I normally would never get a dog outside of a registered organization but she had people interested in her that gave me back yard breeder vibes. I was not going to let that happen so I brought her home and she is my best friend. 9 months later I can’t imagine not having her but boy does she take work!!! I took her to a balance trainer and it has made all the difference for both of us to learn from him.
I too have owned and trained German Shepherds my entire adult life. (I am 70). They are magnificent creatures who allow us into their lives............and worm their ways into our heart in the process. You will never have a more devoted, loyal and fiercely defensive friend. Yes they shed............but the good news is it's only once a year. And by once a year..............I mean ALL YEAR LONG. I've stood on many a podium in the Schutzhund arena and my life has been enriched beyond words by these incredible animals. But mostly, more than anything else, they are friends.

You will not be disappointed if you work with it and train it good mine is smarter than my kids at times and a very good watch dog that the bark is definitely worse than the bite I really don't think she would bite anyone but really sounds aggressive when someone s at the door

got my 1st gsd from a local pound in 2009 he was a year and a half when I got him. He is now 11 and still goin strong no health probs so far and the best dog I have had. So smart & protective he is always right next to me I mean like 6 inches away every where I walk or sit. Wakes me up at 6am every day. He is my best friend. jesus do they ever shed tho! got to take the good with the bad. great with all my friends and anytime someone walks by my house he is on point and letting me and them know he is here. They are great dogs my next dog will b another gsd
My dog, Fraulein is my first GSD and I am ever so impressed. She's so incredibly smart and eager to please. I hope she has a good loong life.

The best dog I've ever known, the one that "got me," was a male named Solomon. He was a sickly rescue puppy who grew into an unexpectedly beautiful dog. I am an amateur dog owner. Sol made me look like I knew what I was doing. Sol was all the things GSDs are known for and more (he remains the stuff of family legends). I lost him in 2010 to complications from DM back before it was widely understood. I've never stopped missing him.
I currently have another breeder cull--an adult GSD with mild hip dysplasia. Selah is a lovely girl with a kind heart (great with my grandchildren) and easy to have around. Not Solomon. No other dog could be. But she too is a credit to her breed.
I've had eight GSD's in my life and the one in the picture is the one I miss most. Passed at 6 y.o. from seizures. He was an exceptional gentle giant at 120 lbs

Grew up with cats, always had cats. Then met a guy, got my 1st dog, a GSD, a working line one too LOL Boy did I not know what I was getting myself into.
Ditched the guy, kept the dog and wouldn't change a thing because my boy brought out the best in me by motivating (nice word for it lol) me to be a strong leader, helping me be stronger as a person, and got me off my lazy arse everyday.
Super intelligent, keeps me in check to be disciplined and consistent by challenging me every now and then lol

I love my German Shepherd, I put the work in on him from the get go! Basic obedience and small group on leash socialization classes. And of course watching your videos! Balanced training worked very well for him- he’s a great dog my family loves. He’s a happy, loyal, smart, easy to train high ball drive dog! He loves people but honestly not other dogs except his live in older dog companion. I have had to work on trail walking and growls to strange dogs (aggression) , but he has learned “no growl” and “leave it” commands well now! We pass without issue! I’m ok with that I’m just aware we won’t ever be doing dog beaches or dog parks! But I think he won’t miss out he just wants me and to play on our property! He is the best dog and great with his commands and knows so many words! Like I say “house” and he goes to door to go in. My very first Gsd and he has my heart!

Now looking for new buddy, and probably ready in January... Reason for the pos: Your advice has helped me decide my future path, and I want to say thanks. Active as all get out, but, at 60, I have decided to back off my original decision to take on a Malinois, and go back to GSD. Thanks for helping craft this decision. I don’t think I’d go wrong either way, but your advice has helped guide my efforts towards the working line GSD because of the end goal and job ahead for him (support dog for wife who has Parkinson’s, and schutzhund with me, and family dog for all. Thanks again!

That was one of the best I have watched about GSD's, I have owned and trained many from rescue until it was my time to raise one from a pup and this information was 100% right on, Now I'm 60 and a working dog would be more then I could handle so I have just purchased a show line to join me and my other 2 GSD's that are CDX trained with my female getting old and with hip issues I am bring one last dog in behind her, by the time he will be 10 I'll be 70 so that will be game over for me, I dread the day not having a dog, maybe when the time comes I;ll have to go back to older rescue dogs.
Excellent video! Thank you! For 20 years I’ve had Standard Poodles and still love them with all of their happy antics and intelligence. They’re great dogs and it’s been 2 long, sad years since I lost my boy of 15 yrs. I can no longer manage poodle coats at this point in life. My daughter brought a female black GSD puppy here and she’s sure changed everything around here. She’s only 3 1/2 months old and super smart, attentive and full of funny antics herself. Everyday is filled with joy and lots of play time. I’m so amazed at her. She already keeps tabs on everyone in the family and has to check on all of us if we leave the room. Talk about loyalty! Wow! She’s won all of us over! Chloe is her name💕 I love the breed!
My first dog, who is a Husky, is great and I never thought I could love a dog more until I got my first GSD!

My granny got one was a month older than me. He was so good and we adored each other. So, we got a white female for our house, and she was also amazing to grow up with in childhood. She was a cuddle when I was unwell. She once protected me once from another dog attacking me. Then we got sheba who was such a baby 🤣 she was very protective of our home. She also as she got older and we had kids brilliant with them. My niece has downs syndrome and sheba almost like she new would lay and curl around her when she was a toddler and had bad muscle strength. Never left my daughters side either. Now they have ruby, another big baby, awful good breed for families xo
My favorite breed of dog. I grew up with GSDs and currently have 2. I lost one due to old age a few years ago - she was 16 years old. My dogs are highly trained and they are very well socialized with people, kids, other animals. Please do not purchase any dog, especially a GSD from a puppy mill or backyard breeder. This video is spot on about the breed. Very well done.
Hey I just wanted to say a huge thank you. I’m my GSDs first home after he was rescued from an animal hoarding situation- he was supposed to be a foster and we couldn’t bare to let him go. He’s as sweet as can be, but I’ve often been left clueless as I grew up with labs and goldens and didn’t know what to do with this anxious, energetic, Velcro dog. After your video we’re now deep into training and considering signing up for our local search and rescue program together.

Just one other cautionary thing I would have mentioned at the end of the video: THEY SHED a lot. I’ve had four DDR/Czech sable working line in succession and the shedding is real.
I have three Czech/DDR shepherds now, one is a senior so he drops his coat slower. I have to sweep out hair balls from my patio weekly. That’s with regular brushing. 😂
Yes they shed!!! Robo vacuum is a must. A battery powered hand held vacuum for behind doors and those robo vacuum missed areas. You failed to mention “nose art” on glass patio doors. Another added bonus is you have the honor of the daily picking up poop in the backyard.

One more importing thing about getting one of these animals, make sure you get it in spring, so you can take it out daily and have it meet people when ever possible, so that they become less aggressive towards people.
The bond between a well treated GSD and it's master and family is very strong and the drive to protect it's pack is amazing.

Had GSDs all my life. Since I was 8 years old, I’m 41. Never had an alarm installed at home. Never had a break in. Never had a problem with the dogs. Best dog overall in my opinion. Am amazing guard. Gentle. Intelligent. And loving animals.
I have to laugh my wife gets ups packages at work or at home doesn't matter the address as long as her name is on the package is stamped large dog one of the best security systems out there and nobody can hack it

We had a white German Shepherd and she was 15 when we finally had to put her down. We also took in a stray off the street and he had food allergies to the point where it cost us a small fortune to keep him healthy enough, we had him for only three years and had to put him down because he had kidney failure. And now we have another young male that is just the most caring dog ever. I am in high hope that we have him for a long time to come. At that point we might be too old to have another dog of large size. I never was a fan of the GSD breed until my husband got one and at that point I remembered why. I vacuumed every day a ton of white hair, now i am sweeping and cleaning the hair every day as well, but seems normal black and tans are not as obvious as white hair. Those dogs are not for everyone, they high energy and need a lot of work out and they shed all year round and twice as much in fall and spring. Thank you for the video, those "Einstein" dogs are special for sure!
Nice video. The only thing I would disagree with is the part about pet quality GSD being either a washout from breeders of working/show or from a BYB. There are serious breeders out there for 'pet' GSDs. They are dedicated to providing healthy (hips/elbow/DM testing), solid dogs that integrate well into modern families. I do wholeheartedly agree that no matter what 'kind' of GSD you get - be ready to meet its needs.

Best breed if you want a life long companion. Just invest time is solid training and a good vacuum (they shed, a lot).

Great video, one of the best in explaining the GSD. Being born in Germany and spending most of my childhood there, my family has always owned GSD's. As an adult, I've always owned two sable's at a time with a sieger show line and one from a working dog background. I would do anything for my GSD's and often times, they are seen as my equal companions. I love their high emotional intelligence and character. Personally, I only get my GSD's from puppies, so I can ensure they are trained and socialized properly. From the time they are puppies, I take them everywhere with me and introduce them to any and all stimulation possible. I even take them shooting with me to stop any fear of loud bangs or fireworks. As a former Military Police K9 handler and now a Sheriff's Deputy, I've witnessed these "guardian angles" first hand. They would and do die for their family or pack. I no longer handle dogs because I get too attached and hesitate to put them in harms way. I just can't view them as "a piece of equipment."
I have a German shepherd she the best dog I ever had when she was just a puppy I trained her on the leashed after 2 days she already walking on the leashed and also I taught her how to sit and stay still need to train her so Thay are easy to train also she very friendly to my. cats and she very over protective of my family also when she meet new people.... she barks at them and after a while she stops and be friendly to them.....also she follow me everywhere......and over protective of my little sister and brother and my cats because she attack any dog that's near them.....and also she now 1 year old....,😊🙂😄😀
I picked up Christine from a home in rural Michigan. She was six-eight weeks old. She was always around people and thought everyone loved her. She grew up with a poodle mix and he thought Chrissy was his puppy. We would take them to a 10 acre property and when they were older let them run the woods. They had so much fun. When I loudly called them they would be back within 10 minutes. My children are horribly allergic to dogs even poodles. No more dogs for me. I really love them.
My GSD pup is now 4 months old. Everyone told me they were different from any other dog I've owned, and they were right. She is a LOT of hard work, but worth every second of it! She is a totally amazing pup...

My wife and I have been German Shepherd owners for many years. There is no better breed. They make great pets, they are fearless defenders of the home and family, they are very intelligent and take to training quickly.
In our opinion, if it's not a German Shepherd, it's just a dog.

I have never had a GSD before but am getting a retired working dog in April, he will be 8 when he retires, I previously had a retired Belgium Shepherd ( Alpha) who was extremely demanding and at the risk of being disloyal to my Rottweiler probably my favourite dog, Gunnie has never lived out of a kennel so living in my house will be new to him, he has worked as a general-purpose dog for 8 years so I plan on giving him the best retirement ever, I've been watching a lot of videos on GSD and I can honestly say I don't know why I didn't get one earlier
When I was a kid I had a friend with a GSD. When people would come over the dog went in back bedroom bc they said dog was protective. I nvr forgot that. Years later my ex wanted a GSD.. and I told him I would leave if he got one not bc I didn’t like them but bc I knew he would end up in a bedroom too and I knew I would hate myself for that. Someday ..maybe I will be good enough for one but I am not good enough a trainer in that way. I will keep learning. Thank you for speaking the truth to people.
He ended up in a bedroom because the owners were morons who couldn’t or didn’t train their dog. GSDs are incredibly friendly.

Miss Sasha Deol They’re not social because they’re not properly socialized when young, just like people. Any dog will act calmly around people and other dogs if they’re properly exposed to them.
@@afcgeo882 I've had 2 shepherds, 1 at 6 weeks which was definitely socialized from the get. Puppy classes galore, meeting everyone in sight. Just ended up being overly protective and didn't want anyone near anything he cared about. And sometimes they can be 1 person dogs.

Avoid those with sloping backs and low hip lines (show lines)
Always get a GSD with a straight back, no matter what the size.
Then it won't matter if it's a working line, or show line.

I have 4 German shepherds and they are the epitome of man's best friend. They are such a loving breed and excellent protectors. Everyone in my community (most are dope dealers or drug heads) knows that I could tape a 100 dollar bill to my door and nobody is brave enough to come after it. 🤣💜
I rescued my girl from a soldier deploying to another station; she is the best thing that has happened to my sons and I. She still required some training and as a lifelong dog guardian, I was able to train our girl with ease as she's a very smart girl. She loves us and we love her and can't imagine a moment without her in our life.
Loved the video. I think it would've been worth mentioning that GSD's are also really forgiving. When you realise that you've made mistakes training them and try to change, they will adapt to you and follow.

my grandfather was an old soldier and when he left yhe army he was lucky enough to bring home an old army dog a german sheperd called NELSON ime to yung to remember NELSON but ive heard tales of his bravery and prowes and how much the soldiers loved and respected these service dogs 😆
The German Shepherd is the best dog in my opinion. After getting my first one many years ago I will never have a different breed. So good with kids and saying they have high intelligence doesn't do them enough credit. They learn so fast it's almost unbelievable.

I saved a 2 year full blood German Shepherd from a kill shelter "Pound" this Christmas in Oklahoma while I was visiting family. She "Arrow" was picked up with a chain around her neck and some dangling down. No owner came forth and no one adopted her so on her last day I took her. She was scared of humans but loved other dogs. So I adopted another to help her feel more comfortable on our trip home to Oregon. She has come so far. She is so loving and smart. I work with her everyday. On the other dog, my friend wanted a dog so he took him "Bo" and they see each other all the time. Bo is a Cattle dog/Border Collie and Very smart. These dogs have new lives...like the move Dog's Purpose.
I love their interest, focus on their human and willingness to work/learn! They make training fun!!
I have had 4 German Shepherds in my life. They make great pets when exercised and properly cared for. They have all lived in my house so i had to hoover the house every day and groom them on a daily basis. They molt a lot and there was always hair around !! I loved them all and was heartbroken when they passed.
I just love them.

And every new one seems to have the same soul. As another one.
Its like you don't really have to train them.

My big girl is half Malinois and half German Shepherd. She combines the best sides of both breeds. She is my second dog. My first one was also a German Shepherd and she was my friend for a very long time until her illness with cancer. My wife and I tried to live without a dog for one year. But then we, that means our family decided that without a dog it is no real life. We drove 300 km to find our present friend and life in our family started again.
I lived for over 20 years of my life with those kind of dogs. Starting out when I was like 4 and them around me until my mid twentys. All of them were awesome dogs and really good with anyone, you could bring them anywere. Sad part, all of them died to cancer.

I have German Shepherds my whole life. My best friend was a German Shepherd. We grew up together since my birth. he died when we were 13 years old. I had a lot of other dogs after him. But he will always be the best. I currently have two German Shepherd females. and one more Pitbull. The Pitbull I adopted after it had been abused for his stupid ex-owners.
Only dog is I have ever had, not for first time dog owners, definitely needs a right handler! Awesome, loving, protective and loyal

My sable GSD is my first dog that’s all my own. He amazes me everyday with how intelligent, eager to please, obedient, and friendly he is. He is a social butterfly. I’m trying to get him into protection/obedience training to make sure he’s not too friendly and doesn’t protect me like he should. He’s 8 months and I can’t wait to get in and see him flourish!

Our German shepherd, Gracie, will be 9 next week, and she is my “once in a lifetime” dog. A sweeter, more loyal, or more goofy friend could not be found. She’s also incredibly stubborn, but that wasn’t unexpected.
My gsd is a freak, 10st , 72 to the shoulder sable working class big baby most of the time but can be volatile when comes to the vets hates being on a lead but unfortunately due to a inexperienced handler with another gsd at a training class he can be unpredictable with other dogs now very difficult to socialise him now as people see his size and instantly stay well clear.i keep him busy with agility although he hates jumping and close protection work which he loves . Best dog breed in the world
Had a female. Wonderful dog miss her greatly. Great family protection skills. Hip issues can be a problem in older in age. 👍🏻❤️

Last 20 years had white German shepherds great dogs very smart and protective all of them lived over12years just had seven puppies in March 2020
All you have to do is take care of this canine and thier loyalty, love and protection of your family is paid back 100 fold....they are truly magnificent animals.
What I love most especially with my GSD in particular she is always alert , she will stay looking out of the window for hours to insure no one or anything is in her yard .
Ive had a pair of shepherds a few times. All black. Two times german lines and one time American. I just got a female American puppy. I learned best not to pair up females. And two males can be a hassle too. My last one will be a solo dog. The german lines are generally more hard or tough and have a higher drive. Ive learned for pet American german shepherd. They all have their own personalities. I train using positive reinforcement. When being naughty they are trying to tell you something from the earliest ages on. Correct the naughty stuff and mean it but no hitting. Just have to mean even if its restraint or putting lead on etc… they are not the kind of dog you should argue with. They will win. They’re a strong determined breed and really not for inexperienced unless the new owner gets proper help training. Personally i devote more time to tra8ning starting at 8 weeks and all the important stuff is down by 16 weeks. in the deep end. They can deal! In bed room with me at night…not kennel. Kennel when i have to leave to do something a dog is not welcome for. Its two months of constant supervision. I think of whining as communication. You just need to mean it and not ask for it unless you’re sure you can enforce it ( in an assertive fair way….again leash….long lead….noisy can of coins to shake…. Set of keys to throw at their butt if desperate) do all you can in a positive way but naughty is naughty. Once i correct i ignore them. They might repeat. I correct in a more assertive way….the “i mean it way. “°Then ignore….etc….ignoring at the right times really works. I often see them settle with some toy they choose and roll around playing with it after such a sequence. Thats when you stop ignoring and reinforce with treat sometimes but mostly with lots of enthusiasm and praise and rubs….of course then the puppy starts doing the jumping up ( bad) and biting (bad) and all excitement stuff and so yeah….seems like you messed up a good thing but youve got to do it. Then start over…. Giving them the fun attention for good behavior with them would be like asking to sit after praising enthusiastically and treat or Play tug….interrupting jumping and biting before it starts. This could be throughout puppyhood ….depends on the dog. Each dog is basically wired a little different. Balanced is best but doesn’t always work that way. Mine needs more socializing than usual for example. Shes not a super tough one for a german shepherd but very active and yes determined. Shes actually on the mellow side! And its a lot of dog anyway.

We got two puppies who are half GSD half malamute. They're as smart as a GSD but are as stubborn as a Malamute. They aren't suspicious of strangers and they talk back constantly! They're a ton of fun :)
Personally think the working line straight back type are far better to look at and have more intelligence. Just my opinion.
Robert I just did a similar video on the Border Collie, but I don't have your amazing production skills. Putting me to shame. Love the Sables . Excellent Video, great points made. Thank you : )
Working lines are awesome for the right handler, but for most urban lifestyles a (quality) Show line is perfect. West German Show line bloodlines are a good example, hard working, good head on their shoulders with just a little less drive compared to their Working line cousins.
I understand now that I have a working line why people have showlines as pets. I couldn't agree with you more. I love my working line sable straight back and I find he's far more handsome than what is typical American Showline.
The straight back looks like a athletic natural form while the slope back looks like a man made goof.
@@jeffk464 agree. Some slopeback dogs seem to me to be caricatures of type. Perhaps they are more sedate because they lack musculature in spine and hock area.
Inbreeding.... Then when undesirable results occur dogs are given up.
Or suffer problems as result of search for type.
Just my observation.
Breeding dogs for ideal ain't perfect ....
@joseph stallings Is the hip dysplasia less common with the straight back type? I just started researching GSD, and I had noticed some dogs looking like their haunches were sloped vs not, but didn't realize there were different lines.
I have a german shepard and husky mut. He is the most loyal and loving dog I've ever had. He gets a bit over excited some times. The "Growls" he makes during play time can throw some people off. He is very vocal and loves talking to us when he knows we are talking about him.
