As a Norfolk boy I can tell you most local people around here avoid Yarmouth, particularly in the summer. It is very busy , rundown and has a bit of a threatening atmosphere in places. However, I do accept that many people love it, with all it's faults.
If you want to see the real seaside Norfolk visit the beaches of Holkham, Brancaster or Old Hunstanton where beautiful sand abounds. There are lovely sea side resorts like Cromer, Sheringham , Sunny Hunny and even nearby Gorleston to visit. There are many areas where you can be by yourself on a lovely beach , but I'm not going to tell you where they are haha..
If you fancy a bit of culture/shopping then Norwich has many historic buildings including a very impressive Norman Castle and a modern shopping centre. Inland we have lovely rolling countryside in north Norfolk as well as the beautiful Broads and sandy Brecklands. There is a lot to see and much variation , so just a bit of research will bring it all to light.
Thank you Lucy for being kind about this area.

I wished I had weeks as I could tell there was so much to explore and enjoy. So many people prefer to go abroad when there's so much of this country and it's history that has to offer us.
I was from the south east and as a child always holidayed on the south coast, south west or over to the isle of whight. We recently moved to the midlands and are discovering lots of new and interesting places as well as coastlines. Cromer and Wells next to sea are nice coastlines in Norfolk. Just wished we had moved and explored up this way when we were a bit younger.

Thank you for this, I love Great Yarmouth. As a child we used to stay at south denes caravan park, it was just past the pleasure beach and right on the front, one step down and you were on the beach. I have a photo somewhere of me as a child on the snail ride. All of Norfolk is beautiful but you need to visit North Norfolk. Cromer, Hunstanton and Wells, they all have slightly different characters but are just magical seaside places. Hunstanton has a lighthouse you can stay in and a brilliant heritage centre. It also has beach huts and some are just incredible, you could live in them. I could go on forever about how brilliant Norfolk is and I hope you manage to see loads of it, the trips will be well worth it.

Such a shame you were not able to visit Time and Tide museum, its a gem, you would have loved it. There is a Row model set up complete with models and noises of how the houses would have been.
Also, a cheeky point, but not your fault as there are plenty of weird spellings in Norfolk, Happisburgh is pronounced "Haze-bruh (just in case you come back this way)

I have many fond memories of going to Virginia City, Nevada as a kid in the 1980s. It's an 1850s Old West mining town that has been a tourist attraction for decades. It was a bit rundown and a little cheesy but it was a place where my parents would let us run free to buy souvenirs and visit the silly, faux mining displays and other "Old West" attractions. We always loved the Shooting Gallery the best. On a recent trip there, I saw that the shooting gallery had been removed from its original building but a local hero saved it and reassembled it. It's in a smaller space but I was so glad to see my old friend still working and making kids laugh. I love that some types of attractions are just unapologetically themselves. Not everything needs to be polished.

    • @throughlucyslens
      @throughlucyslens  Месяц назад +1

YES! Exactly this! We always had more freedom when we visited the seaside, coming from a big city we didn't get much freedom here, but those days we were allowed to run wild,'got terrible sun burn (oh the 80s 🙃) and just be free. That place in Nevada sounds amazing! I have visited vegas but I preferred Freemont Street Over the strip for the reasons you stated above!

Hi Lucy - yet another fabulous video. I had a friend in Caister on sea, and whenever I went up there, at least twice a year, we always went along to Great Yarmouth. I love 'people watching' and GY is a great place for that. I love the place - so full of surprises. The faded grandeur of some of it has a charm of its own, then there are the areas now being tidied up and made more beautiful. So much history there - if you bother to look, and the coast line and beaches are lovely. Lowestoft is another lovely place too - there is a brilliant Kipper Smokers there, and plenty of fresh Kippers were bought and consumed eagerly. Norfolk has something for everyone, be it the Broads or the hustle and bustle of GY. Keep up the good work Lucy - thanks for taking us along on your adventures. Take care 🙂 X X

A friend introduced me to East Anglia back in the 90s, and it was definitely love at first sight - I think Southwold is still my favourite place. Like you, I absolutely love beach huts and lighthouses - Southwold has both! I’m fortunate enough to live in another of our great seaside resorts - Bournemouth. British seaside towns are wonderfully varied, but they all have that lovely seaside architecture, and it’s almost as if the history of all those happy holidays is etched into the stones.
Keep up the good work Lucy, and don’t feel bad about the coffee! (Actually, you’d be such a great person to sit and have a real live coffee and chat with!) x

The closest I've been to Great Yarmouth is Hemsby. It's a little further up the coast and is currently often in the news because it's sadly falling into the sea. It has the most beautiful sand dunes (very like Camber in East Sussex). If you liked Lowestoft, you'd adore Dungeness in Kent. It's one of those places that looks absolutely stunning when the sun's out and bleak as all hell when it's not. Folkestone, Greatstone and Littlestone in Kent all have lines of beach huts, and they are very difficult to get hold of. People wait on lists for years to get the chance to rent one.

The powers and amusements remind me of Old Orchard Beach in Maine, USA! Also the entire town of Sevierville, Tenn, adjacent to Dollywood is very similar (but without the ocean). We live near the opposite of an extreme marker, The Geographical Middle of Tennessee. How’s that for excitement?

Hey Shelly, so weird you say that. I live in Lowestoft and work in Great Yarmouth and take walks along the seafront almost every day. Anyhoo, I was visiting family in New Hampshire and we spent a day in Maine at Old Orchard Beach and I got massive Great Yarmouth vibes.. although the lobster rolls and the live music on the pier there was fantastic.. also the Amtrak trains passing just behind beach was really cool.. loved it. I never seen so many flavours of ice cream !

Sorry, as Norfolk resident, just up from Happisburgh, I have to correct your pronunciation, it's Hazeboro. There is plenty in this area that reminds us of our ties to the sea. Not commercialised, so you have to look carefully. Enjoy your stay in wonderful Norfolk.

Sorry .. Brummies are terrible at saying what we see - I had a feeling I was probably saying it wrong but couldn't find any references. As someone who lives Worcester way I know how contentious these place names can be, when I return, because I will for sure I'll be able to say it like a local :) thank you.
