That's cause it took SEGA 20 years to stop writing her as obnoxious and give her a personality other than "I love SONIC". Believe me ,we WANTED To love Amy, but Sega kept making her do dumb things like threatening Sonic with her hammer when he doesn't return her advances when he's trying to save the world. There's nothing cute about that same joke happening in Heroes, Rush, Advance 3, Riders (especially Riders since he saved her life and she still hits him), and Black Knight.... Let her take that anger out on EGGMAN or when SOnic actually messes up like in Boom and X (and to an extent Prime and Frontiers). THEN she's a loveable character.
We all knew she was a great character with a ton of potential, but like with SHadow's broodiness and Knuckles loner personality and Rouge being a thief and bragging about it, it's not really good writing when that's all they can think of for the character. Naruto had the same problem wtih Sakura where all she was protrayed as was a weak girl who had to hide behind the two males, but she really rose in competence when she got fed up and went to Tsunade to train herself so the boys wouldn't leave her in the dust and was taught to use her intellect and chakra control advantage over the two boys, which she excelled at with her medical skills. No longer being a shadow of the boys but being her own person. We hate SEGA For writing her badly, not Amy.

I was thinking of sphinx cats that are naturally hairless, and wondering why you'd shave a hairless cat. Also, I think she meant she wanted to paint herself blue in order to look more like Sonic, thinking perhaps he doesn't like the color of her fur, and that she would do anything it took to please him. One thing that's consistent with Amy: She's resourceful and has a lot of skills. To elaborate.
-She can read the future via Tarot Cards (which is probably how she tracks Sonic).
-She can get to the craziest of places with ease (like Prison Island, the Little Planet, or Cryptic Castle).
-She's got a Hammer she can pull out of literal Hammerspace. And if Sonic Chronicles is anything to go by, she can hit as hard as Knuckles can punch with it.
-She can run really fast (all Hedgehogs in the series, barring Silver in some cases, can do this). She also has considerable experience in kickboxing according to Sonic Battle. This allows her to fight hand to hand with top-tier government agents like Rouge the Bat.
-She can Double Jump and turn Invisible.

Just want to say, to everyone being so literal about Sonic and Amy's ages: Sonic canon ages are kind of dumb. (Seriously, Rouge, who looks and acts like a mature woman of around maybe 25, is only 18 in canon, meanwhile, girls like Amy, who in some iterations has her own house/apartment and probably a job, is 12 in canon). Really you should just separate the characters into vague categories instead of focusing on the numbers. There's the obvious children (Cream and - in some iterations - Tails) the young adults (Sonic and most of the rest of the cast), and the older adults (Vanilla and the like).
Just my two cents. And no I'm not pushing for pedophilia or anything, or even shipping Sonic and Amy for that matter. Just stating a fact: The canon ages of Sonic characters are really dumb and inconsistent so you shouldn't worry too much about them.

In this context, it seems to mean a metaphor where Amy is admitting that there are probably more beautiful women out their who Sonic is seeing (gorgeous Persians). To think he might have had a home, was the star of his school track team, a steady social life... he had to drop all this to RUN RUN RUN forever. But then maybe we should thank Amy. As a result of his life on the run, Sonic has gotten into a lot of dangerous adventures for our entertainment. Kudos, Amy.
He ran fast even before he met Amy (Sonic 1).
The speed cap in the original is because Sonic 1 was basically an experimentation, so they weren't exactly sure how to pull off the speed yet. They learned by the time Sonic 2 came out though.

I know everyone believes that Amy's soul purpose in the games is to be an annoying hedgehog that follows Sonic around like a crazy person, but I think there is more to her then just that.
When Amy was younger she looked like Sonic, and followed him around everywhere. But when Sonic Adventure came out she was completely different. She had her own design, and she was a playable character with her own story. She was worried about, and determined to help out the small bird she found. She protected it despite the robot chasing her down, and trying to kill her.
Everyone always associates her with being a damsel in distress that Sonic has to save all the time, but she's really not. She almost escaped the Egg Hanger when she was captured by the robot, and only failed because Eggman had taken the bird so she had to rescue it as well.
Amy can protect her self easily, proven by the huge hammer she carries around and swings like it's made of nothing.
All these things are the reason Amy is my favorite character from the series. She's brave, outgoing, determined, and (in my opinion) an adorable girl. I believe Amy is the strong female lead, not the annoying side character that makes an appearance every now and then. If Amy would realize that crushing on Sonic was slowing her down, you all would agree with me because she would be awesome.
But that's just my opinion. If you actually took the time to me listen to ramble on about a fictional character who could make a very good roll model if she was used in that way, then good on you. (Btw I only used Sonic Adventure as an example because it's one of the Sonic games I've actually played.)
I think alot of Amy Rose the hate comes from Sonic Heroes and Sonic X, that flanderized Amy's obsession with Sonic to unsettling levels. In most of the games she's not nearly that obsessed with him and can put that aside when she has to.
Also from the Sally Acorn crowd who favour her as Sonic's Love Interest and see Amy as competition.

Amy's crush is not slowing her down. Her crush on Sonic is the thing that inspired her in the first place. Its why she leaps to the rescue of the little bird, like her Hero Sonic is known to do. Its why she goes out of her way to help people in need, like Sonic would do, and wanting to keep up with him and impress him is how she got stronger over time. She trains in boxercising so she can protect people as well as keep in shape. Amy's crush is really no different than Tail' admiration for Sonic.
Amy's crush on Sonic is the source of her power.
Its just some predictions of her do it poorly.

Is it just me, or does a completely different version of this song exist in the game? Because I SWEAR on my life that it goes right into "Sweet sweet, you're so sweet, there's nowhere to hide. Sweet sweet, you're so sweet, come on, settle our lives" after "bop bop baya-baya". I've always heard it that way.
Also, that electric piano solo section and horn soli is TOTALLY Sonic Unleashed's Empire City. It would fit right in.
