When I got my Sony A7IV I ordered the 200-600mm lens, I used it for about 2 weeks and I wasn't getting as many keepers as I thought I would get hand held. I then bought the Sigma 60-600mm and my keeper rate doubled from the 200-600mm because the image stabilization is so much better in the Sigma. Also being able to shoot at wider focal lengths, I can shoot landscapes while out shooting wildlife and it also does a great job at macro's at 200mm. Great video!

Thanks for including your thoughts on this versus a 200+ and a 70-200. I'm an amateur just breaking into this hobby but I want something for wildlife since I'm going to be living in the arctic for the next two years. I was debating between breaking the bank on this guy or going with a 70-180 from tamron and the 150-600 contemporary but I'm edging more towards the big guy despite the price and weight.

If you have the sigma 60-600mm there would be no need for the Sony 200-600mm at all. By all means sell it immediately and I believe you'll forget immediately that you had it.

Hi Brian. Thanks for doing these videos.
I had the Sigma 150-600 and sold it, replacing it with the Sony 200-600. The reason was simple: autofocus. The Sigma AF was slower and less reliable than the Sony, on Sony cameras. I am wondering, not having access to the new 60-600, what the AF is on the new lens. If it's better than on the 150-600, or even close to same as the Sony, that would be amazing.

Hi @ascentfilms! I believe the Sigma 150-600 is only in EF mount, correct? So you would be doing an emount to ef adaptor? The 60-600 is a native E mount which works much better with the autofocus. I couldnt find any difference with the 60-600 focus wise over my Sony 200-600

I have the 200-600 and a 60-600 EF+MC11 the Sigma is heavy, has a noisy auto focus and IS/OSS, but fairly sharp...
I assume the e mount Sigma is a improved version and is a little lighter I believe than the Canon version, and if the
Sigma e-mount an the Sony came out at the same time I probably would go for the Sigma at that time...

Are the colors alot different? And in your experience is the sony better at autofocus?

thank you Brian for this nice review! I have the sony FX6 and what scares me is that you attach this lens (see 6min55sec in your video) without lens support. When I read on forums they advice lens support for heavy lenses or attach it with the lens support on the tripod. I want to avoid rails and support on a telephoto lens. So what's your experience/advice in this?

    • @BrianHunt

I had no issues with the lens on with no support

Hi Brain thx for your thoughts on the Sigma, when are you going on that Safari I really can't wait to see your video and photos from that trip. As I'm planing a trip myself and like the 60-600 especially for video, for photography I'd be ok with the 180-600 as I'm on a Nikon hoping Sigma will bring a Z mount out otherwise I might have to sell my Z6ii and get a Sony equivalent thx

If you ever want to pair those lenses with those new camera bodies which have that new AI chip for object recognition Auto focus , then the sony lens will set it's self apart from sigma, also the weather sealing on Sony is much much more reliable because of that internal zooming... Disregard these matters and then yes The sigma is a far better choice!! I'm also looking to buy one just for that wide end of the focal length!

Yes , you should sale your Sony lens ! Any manufacturer that would add gimmicks to their camera system . Just to lock you into their camera system only . I would stay away from ! I regret that this new Sigma lens want be made for the older Canon E mount . And who the he'll shots 30fps anyway ?

All reviews: "This lens is HEAVY!!!!" This (a bit more sturdy build) guy: "I would say..... maybe the Sigma weighs a bit more..." 🤣 Yeah, I probably wouldn't mind that bit of extra weight either.
One question: If you wouldn't need the 60 - 200 range advantage, would you take the Sigma or Sony and for what reason(s)?

PLEASE READ- SAVE SOME BUCKS!!!: Several commenters have stated the price of 105mm filters being prohibitive. Simple solution is buy (or may already own) a 95mm CPL, ND...whichever! Then purchase an inexpensive 105mm-95mm step-down ring, screw your 95mm filter onto it and screw that combo onto the front of your 60-600 OR 150-600mm Sport and there you have it! No vignetting whatsoever at any focal length/aperture setting. I even have the Sigma 105mm Protector filter on the front of this lens, then the 95mm combo and still NO VIGNETTING! I have the Canon EF mount version of this adapted to my GH6. Great lens...mostly used for video of wildlife, landscape and the moon.

I recently took this Sigma 60-600 ti a Eagles in flight photo workshop. Paired with A1. Needless to say EVERYBODY ELSE had Sony 200-600. Immediately I discovered that Sony had a few SIGNIFICANT advantages in THAT scenario ( I agree with your safari argument).
    1. Shorter range means shorter throw on the zoom ring resulting in ability to faster frame the bird So important for BIF.
    2. Weight is also significantly lighter. Yes for a photo-shot that last 30 min its insignificant, but we spent hours handholding the lens on a moving boat. After a few hours your arms will tell you which lens you prefer!
    3. On A1 you get 30fps vs 15. Big difference for the ability to get that iconic eagle catching the fish shot. My amount of keepers went up when I switched to a Sony. So Im planning to sell my Sigma🤣

      I don't buy it....the story.
Also, my main camera for wildlife is D500 and A6700 at 10 fps is more then enough, I never wished I'd need more, even at 15, it's overkill.

keep the Sony - the extending body of the sigma is not good for filming - if carrying 2 lenses is too much for you then "really" ??????

    • @BrianHunt
      @BrianHunt  Год назад +2

Sigma worked great for me for filming no issues. Typically not just carring 2 lenses, but if you hiking, biking or snowboarding into locations having just what is needed is typically a good thing.

I have the sigma 150-600mm and it's great for filming. So is the Sony. But imagine this. If you shoot mostly on the 60-600mm then all your footage is the same in color cause it's the same lens. Throw in another lens now you're color matching which can be a pain in the arse. As a wildlife videographer this lens looks epic. Of course just my opinion..
