Even if you're being attacked and even IF the person attacking you is actively trying to kill you, if you kill them... you get the death penalty. There are no exceptions. That's right, every single Ace Attorney character you found guilty (as well as every killer in the series Case Closed) were tried and sentenced to death. There is no redemption for them. Makes some cases all the more tragic when you know that information.

The creator wasn't particularly interested in the actual legal system before the games got popular. And no, self defence is definitely not illegal. The law is you never resort to violence except if there is a clear distinct risk of serious injury, eg. they have a weapon. For example, if someone starts a fistfight, fighting back is a bad idea. But if your life is in danger, self defence is allowed and recommended. And no, irl Japan does not do death penalities aggressively. Especially not for self defence cases. Only cases of extraordinary violence, kidnapping murders or multiple murders warrant death penalties. Death penalty itself is the exception, not the rule. Barely any people get executed irl. Last year, no executions occurred, while 2019 had only 3. 2018 had 15, but 13 of those were involved in a single case of terrorism. Since the 90s, 2-8 executions occur each year, almost all for multiple murders. The few single murderers that did get executed were for particularly heinous crimes, nothing that even the worst ace attorney criminals can get close to. Treating Japan like some 1800s country in terms of how they hand out executions is kinda just wrong and mostly a relic of WW2 propaganda along with modern misinfo. In game, Juan Corida admits guilty to murder to avoid being offed by Shelly De Killer. Secondly, Edgeworth's crime is not even under self defence. He threw a gun at someone as a 8 yr old while being Oxygen deprived. If Yanni Yogi got off the hook for it, so could Edgeworth extremely easily. And even then death sentence was impossible since he was a minor at the time of crime. And capital punishments for minors are just straight up illegal.

I guess because the whole burglary turned murder thing wasn't premeditated, even if framing someone else for the crime was.
Similarly, Phoenix briefly considers entering a plea bargain of self defense for Ellen Wyatt in the SOJ DLC case, but Edgeworth blows up that argument at the very beginning, so he has to fight for her complete exoneration.
This is 100% how it felt playing that part of the game. It's literally the first moment of this trial when Karma isn't in control at all, felt very good

In phoenix defense, it was the prosecutors proposal for the defense to cross examine the parrot, the defense agreed and that is why its legal. Cross examination of animals has actually happened quite some time in real life
Not really, prosecutors get away with damn near everything. Manfred Von Karma was the first one to dish out a penalty instead of the judge in that case. But, the judge knows the DA won't fight back so he just cracks down on them to feel like he has some authority

As much as I love the anime, I think this style better encapsulates the chaos that is Phoenix Wright. Astounding work.
