Just imagine if that was on a warm day on dry tyres...
Well, they had to race with intermediates back then.
The 2004 dry weather tyres were grooved slicks, not intermediates...
Those are grooved slicks.
No they're not, they're intermediate tyres. Dry grooves back then had 4 grooves in them.
Nice, this is the kind of knowledge I love.
16 years later and this car is still impressive
And will always be
2004 F1 cars held most of the track records until 2017
Should be 18 around now since it's 2023
@@maza19 barichello still holds the race lap record around monza in the f-2004
They quite litterally dont make them like that anymore....
The cameraman before the tracking shots: “deep breaths this is what I’ve been training for”
Seeing an older series episode restored and upscaled to hd and 50fps is so odd, but so cool. BBC really need to do it to a lot of their mid 2000s programmes
They rather make another race mixing advertisement to shove it down our throats
Brainiac let’s go 😂
Idk it looks kind of weird
hd fps nuclear icbm. Is that a television or a submarine? Can we stop it with the acronyms? I feel that any moment now I will accidentally shit in the wrong place.
I'm not an F1 guy, yet the sound of the V10 is still so nostalgic to me.
What a sound those v10s make. Just amazing.
My eyes aren't used to seeing top gear in 50 fps
That f1 car was a masterpiece
20 years later, we still can't
I'd like to see one of the hyperfast electric cars. Boring? Yes!
Quick? Yes as well
I believe the fastest la time at the moment for road legal cars is the Ferrari SF90 in about 1.10
plot twist: the stig was actually nando's temmate, jarno trulli
i believe it was heikki
Well that could be true despite the fact that heikki was part of renault up until 2007 (as a test driver until an actual f1 driver)
And I’m sure Trulli was at Toyota when this was filmed 💁🏻♀️
Well it was the end of the season that year
Jack Sadler your are correct it was Heiki Kovalainen.
I just love the sound of the V10 era F1 cars. The spine tingling scream of that engine makes me sad for the vaccuum cleaners we have today
Vacuum cleaners with a V6?
Imagine full Electric...
Compared to all the other V10 engines, the Renault V10 engine had a distinctive sound.
@@crazygrainger2006 the v10 Mercedes aswell and the bmw.If you really try you can hear differences between those 3 brands altho it's very close to one another.
“ in 20 years road cars will be able to go as fast as that”
after 15 years, F1 cars are barely faster than that
For safety reasons.
@jonny j i mean, FIA can limit the speed to 500 km/h if they want to, but should they do it? Nope.
Imagine crashing a wall at 475 km/h.
Rodrigo P.C. That and emissions and the interest to create better racing especially with the 2021 (2022) spec cars
@@kami_narisama Exactly! For insane corner speed the f1 doesn't need to hit over 330 kmph in most circuit except circuit like Monza.. Compared to f1 the motogo often goes over 350 kmph in straight line in most of circuit because of much shorter cover of corner distance.. F1 is truly ultimate place of automotive engineering...
@@aluandcache7336 there will always be the dream of a limitless car to show the actual cutting edge of technology and engineering
Stig looked so excited when he drove out towards the track
A little late, but that "Stig" was Heikki Kovalainen
Love Ben Collins and the previous Stig but there's no way Renault would let anyone rag a car like this to its limits unless it's an actual F1 driver....for Renault.
Throughout history, there have been several machines that have soul & are almost sexy! Concorde and the Spitfire had "It" in shovels full! The V10 F1 cars from this era, in my opinion, also fall into the same catagory. When you're close to one when it's running, it leaves you in awe. The way it carves into some of those turns while letting out a visceral wail, is just the absolute pinnacle of Man coupled with automotive design & technology working together in sublime harmony. I could watch this lap again & again & not get bored. I'm glad I've lived in a time where we had machines that were sexy as hell! Something tells me that the future will be advanced to another level but not nearly as emotionally involving.
R25 was the pinnacle of F1. Last V10 champ winning car.
You're so wrong. The 90's F1 cars that had V12 engines, turbocharged and 1200bhp (bhp, not bhp per ton) were the cars that had soul and were sexy. Only brave men could and would drive them and only the greatest could master those beasts.
@@90jucabala Then let's go even deeper. Only 3.0 liter Lotus 49 that was literal death bomb on wheels had soul. No aero, no turbo, no bullshit, no seat belts, just naturally aspirated monster.
@@90jucabala Oh wait. Who cares about Lotus 49. Let's go even deeper again, Mercedes W125 that was literal 600 bhp Messerschmit bomber engine sticked to a fucking bicycle was the only thing any real man would allow himself to drive. No monocoque structure, no disc brakes, just a shopping cart with 600bhp.
@@johanndaart7326
I agree. But for some reason, those older cars don't resemble F1 cars as we know it today.
I too prefer an aspirated engine and I think those machines were great but when you look at them, they just don't feel like F1 if you're under 40 years of age. lol
The sheer speed of that car is already mind boggling. The grip is on another level. I've never seen anything go around that track so violently fast. My neck hurts just watching that lap!
Just imagine what a Mercedes W11 can do around the Top Gear test track?
Red Bull RB20 💀
The W11 is far quicker, but keep dreaming
Bro fr that car is on rails
@@FastFormulaW11 will be faster than the RB20 because the current cars are heavier
Are all stupid??? When I say Red Bull is faster?? Only I Say "Red Bull" Because its a most dominant car.
I come here every one in a while just to listen to that magnificent machine tackle the follow through...what a thing :)
20 years later, that car is still iconic
yes
YES
Y E S !!!!!!!
2:36 *ahhh*
Kids! Get out of here!
Gewel ✔ o
2:39 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Unwanted Orphan that is the glorious sound of a V10 revving at 18,500 RPM.
I came at that part.
Andrew Behrend i thought it was 20?
Night fury get down 😂
@@tanoooo I dont think the V10s got up to 20K. They usually maxed out at 19K at most. Cosworth was able to get their V8 past 20K though, and Honda was able to do it aswell, though only on the dino
Definitely one of the greatest F1 cars of all time. I couldn't help to notice all the people in the background looking over the fence watching 👍
This was my favourite episode when I was growing up. The 2nd race they ever did which was much more polished and thorough then their DB9 race, the bobsled race with the rally car, the lap time comparisons with the old fast cars vs modern cars and then this stint was the icing on the cake. I think Eddy Izzard was the guest on this episode, too?
I think this episode is the only one where they use the name "Fernando Alonso"
no there was the one where richard hammond was driving a f1 car
and the one where vettel was driving a road car
TheProkonover and when they talked about the team orders in Germany 2010
And when Jeremy was reviewing the Ferrari F12
And the time Jeremy and Richard commented about Fernando’s mustache at the time
One of the fasters F1 car ever made! Im always love the decal!
1:58 gotta love all the road workers just staring in awe, that thing must be heard MILES away
It's 20 years now, where is my road legal f1 car
Mercedes AMG One 🥲
Those brakes - just imagine how much faster he would have gone on slicks on a warm dry day.
Amazing sound...
That was the most glorious sound I've ever heard.
Wow this is something that is lovely to see. Old Top Gear footage upscaled
JUst came here after Alonso's treat in Abu Dahbi this last weekend. Still can't get over the sound of the V10...that crazy scream at full throttle, those gear changes...man it was so cool to be on track listening to 20 cars zoom by in the first lap. After that moment, you couldn't hear anything else...but it was worth loosing hearing capacity as a trade off!
That sound, it's amazing. Bring back the V10. I could listen to the V10 roaring all day long
We need more fuel efficient cars, these things were vas guzzlers
Who's here after Alonso took the R25 around Yas Marina?
it looks like the footage has been sped up 2x compared to Star in a Reasonably Priced Car laps...wow
The sound of that F1 car is AMAZING.
I grew up around the V10 era of formula 1 you never get bored of hearing the V10’s scream at 19000rpms was the most glorious sound you’ll ever hear.
Funny how they were already praising this car before it won both constructors and drivers championships the next year
To me the v10 f1 will always be remembered (also the v12)
I was so sad to learn that the Stig (Ben Collins) didn't actually get to drive this thing, but Heikki Kovalainen in disguise drove it
Did you really think that someone with no experience on driving Formula 1 car would be allowed to do a timed lap on a car that costs several million euros?
@@spketola yes, as it happens literally everytime a rookie enters and F1 car
@@Billiamiscool that made me laugh so hard😅
@@Billiamiscool Two words....Lance Stroll...
@@cliffordrandell735 Another Two words, Nikita Mazepin
Yeah that’s a great lap
What happens when you take a 2018 F1 car round?
cjflash99 way faster but it will sound worse
@Ryan Davidson Are you for real? Are you really saying sound is better than faster lap times?
@O R + faster lap times don't have much to do with engines, but rather aero and tires
@O R You cant say its not nice to see "New lap record" pop up almost every quali. Also i believe its one of the key elements of formula1 to be the fastest motorsport there is. They need to be faster, so that it doesnt happen, that other motorsport series does faster lap times. Their marketing depends on it. I loved the old high revving engine sounds, but there are also advantages to new engines. Fuel comsumption makes it possible to go without refueling. It makes it safer and every pit stop depends on everyone on the crew. Not just guy with fuel nozzel who used to be slowest most of the time.
@@qmata2310 Faster? LMAO!
I'll never tire of the sound v10 f1 cars.
This is brilliant. I miss the old top gear
The shriek of the motor is spine-tingling.
oh the quality is amazing!!!!!
That grip is f****ing amazing....
That’s the car jarno trulli won in Monaco in 2004
2:36 and that’s how u can tell clarkson is an og real f1 fan 🤜🏼
Build time machine and bring me back to my childhood.
Nice job on the video quality
Wow... i forgot how much i missed the V10 F1 era until i rewatched this clip.
One of the greatest lap in top gear history but on dry was 56sec
Seriously incredible performance 😳
Hi! It's Daniel Almeida. 🧒🏻🇺🇲🇮🇳
Great race out there and it did it in 59 seconds. 🧒🏻🇺🇲🇮🇳
The F1 Renault itself really is as lightning fast. 🧒🏻🇺🇲🇮🇳
The F1 Renault itself really is the ultimate speed demon. 🧒🏻🇺🇲🇮🇳
The F1 Renault itself really is the fastest car here on earth. 🧒🏻🇺🇲🇮🇳
I do love my F1 Renault and but my dream is to be a great racing driver. 🧒🏻🇺🇲🇮🇳
That's all for now. I'll be seeing you around. 🧒🏻🇺🇲🇮🇳
When someone doubts you that tv used to be better, just show them this.
“In 20 years road cars will be able to go as fast as that”
*18 years later: one liter engines everywhere*
Love this
This car laid the foundation for the legendary R25 and R26
The sound, just 🤌🏻
I touched that car in Oviedo Fernando Alonso museum, the car i whatched in tv when i was 13. Priceless
3:37 Now we have the AM Valkyrie that has the pace of a LMP2 Car with road tyres, who would have thought...
The sound and speed is exhilarating..
The sound this thing makes... wow
Such a beautiful car.
1:42 Start line
1:43 Launch control
1:45 Launch
We are 2 years away from driving an V10 F1 on the road.
Quite the lap by Heikki Kovalainen here, who was substituting for Ben Collins for this
I'm a Schumacher and ferrari guy but that car is awesome
The bump on the apex of the follow-through in that thing must have been back breaking
Those 20 years in the future he was talking about in the ends is in a couple of days
The Stig was visually overcome with joy
I missed this show top gear😔
3:12 is that a Group B Audi?
It's there for some reason.
Yes the did classic race cars vs road cars evo 8 v audi noble v Ford gt40 and pug 205 gti v 206 gti
That glorious sound
F1 only went downhill from 2004. 2004 cars were the peek of F1 in every aspect
fantastic sound!
I just came here for the sound of that beautiful machine :)
i like how them using alonso's 2004 renault f1 car to beat the ferrari enzo's laptime was kind of foreshadowing how renault would go on to end ferrari's streak of f1 championship wins in the 2005 season, with alonso winning the world title for them!
old top gear video editing was the best
Jeremy should be a f1 commentator
59. On a damp track. And, this was the car that Fernando discovered required a completely unorthodox driving style that the stig didn't use. What could it have done in the dry with Alonso at the wheel?!?
55 seconds
I love this car
I wonder what Fernando Alonso could have done.
The scream of the v10 tho ❤
The video title has the wrong information in it so I will give the correct info, this clip is from SERIES 5 EPISODE 8..........................
V10 sound 😍💪🚀
3:43 This was shown in 2004, and in 2023, The UK’s speed limits have not changed since then
This shot at 2:38 is pure art
Is there ever a sunny day in England
Dunsfold Park Grand Prix sounds great
I imagined this same scenario in 2020 where the dominant champions top the leaderboard and top gear brought in the runners up F1 machine,
Fernando Alonso became the world champion the year after in this video,
I miss the sound of the F1 V10s
THE NOISE THEY MAKE!!!
Old school F1 V10 sound makes my bits fizz.
Fun fact the stig has some f1 experience due to him actually being michal Schumacher
And now we're coming up on 20 years.
Oh the SOUND!
Good to see that even in 2023, Jeremy Clarkson still supports this team
Even said team is trying blow itself from the inside.
And Fernando Alonso still in F1
They’ve fired Trulli from the team because he had a string of disappointing results as a result Jacques Villeneuve was called in to race for the team for 3 races but unfortunately he never scored points whilst he was called up from the sidelines
Well, it's been 13 years since he said that so the car companies are in a hurry if we're supposed to drive in cars as fast as that in 7 years.
@Trippa Where do you find that information?
@Trippa I seriously doubt those claims tbh
its been 20 years and we got electric toys doing 200mph on the autobahn
