The overall problem with nearly all the superhero movies(all franchises) is that villains are frequently introduced for a single movie installment and defeated(usually fatally) in that same movie. We might get character development with the good guys or even sidekicks, but it's rare with bad guys. Magneto of mutant franchise is the biggest exception.
Nebula is played by Karen Gillan and a movie to watch her without makeup is "Jumanji, welcome to the Jungle". With Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Icing on the cake.....Jack Black.
I have a friend who talked his GF into watching this movie by saying that Vin Deisel is in it. It took the GF half way through to ask "So where's Vin Deisel?" The "I am Groot" response earned a slug on the arm.
The Writer/Director James Gunn actually wrote the script with Groot’s true dialogue. Only people who have that copy are him and Vin Diesel. That’s why each “I am Groot” is different.
My absolute favorite line delivery is Ronan's first "What are you doing?" when Starlord starts the dance off. The sheer incredulity portrayed by the ruthless world destroyer is so funny to me. Ronan is so shocked he forgets to even project his powerful voice. The only time he is actually stopped short is due to some Terran obsessed with 80's movies.
Interesting fact.....when Starlord almost dropped the orb....it was real. He actually dropped it and it fit the character so well that they just kept the take.
@@MoMoMyPup10 I mean, I suppose we don't know if it's the exact take. But it's pretty well-known that he did drop it in a take and they liked it better that way. Don't have to be at the set to know things, my guy.
Wow, you may be the first person, either in real life or as a reactor, that I've seen not immediately-adore this movie! But, of course, that's the point. I commented on your "Winter Soldier" reaction that I love that that film marks a turning point in the MCU, when they start getting brave, and instead of just doing "superhero movies," the MCU does every genre under the rainbow, just in a superhero setting. If "Winter Soldier" is an early-to-mid-1970s-style hardboiled espionage movie, "Guardians" is an early-to-mid-1980s-style space opera. And, of course, this creates some controversy. Without giving anything away, there are "future" installments in the MCU that are "controversial" among fans. I've loved everything they've done so far, but not everyone feels that way, and I'm genuinely-glad for that. It would have been so easy for them to basically make the same movie (and now TV series) 40 times, but they didn't. They got experimental, and weird, and kept everyone on their toes. Even when it doesn't work perfectly, or connect with every fan, I would rather they occasionally fail, or make some fans unhappy, than for them to get stale and staid. That's how franchises die. Hell, "Star Trek"'s longevity can be chalked up to both its highs being higher and its lows being lower than anything else out there. We remember "City on the Edge of Forever" AND "Spock's Brain" with equal aplomb (TNG? "Best of Both Worlds" AND "Sub Rosa." Voyager? "Scorpion" AND "Threshold. DS9? "In the Pale Moonlight" AND "Profit and Lace"). Who cares about something that just always gets a B-? Regarding "Guardians" specifically, I do think a lot of this movie's tone and humor is heavily based in James Gunn's sense of humor. He's currently (as of February, 2023) 56, so, he's an early Gen-Xer. This movie is VERY Gen-Xer in tone. I'm an early Millennial ("geriatric Millennial," as they say, thanks, "Medium"), so, I'm old enough that the style still heavily-appeals to me. I'm too young to have grown up with that tone, but I was exposed to it via home video in childhood, so, it's still a huge part of my taste. And, I can see how Peter himself can be grating without the context of his "f-boy a**hole" personality just being a cover for his trauma. Dude's a burnt cookie. Hard and crusty on the outside, soft and gooshy on the inside. It's like how everyone learned the wrong thing about James Bond pre-Daniel Craig. "Oh, what an awesome lifestyle, I wish I could live like that!" And, in reality, no, he's a mess. He drinks himself into oblivion and jumps into bed with everyone to make the screaming in his head stop, he's not even actually enjoying anything. In short, not every film is for everyone. I, for one, am very curious to see what you think of "Volume 2," since the two films divide the fanbase evenly. There's lots of MCU fans that love one, but not the other. And I love your reactor "style," so-to-speak, and really appreciate the actually-insightful commentary that you give. What's the point of watching any reaction videos if they feel the same way that you do about everything? Challenge me, give me new things to think about! The joy of watching people like you, for me, anyway, is seeing how people very different from me respond to things that I love. It helps me better appreciate said things, and evaluate my own tastes better. So, keep being honest, and don't be afraid to challenge sacred cows! We need it! :D
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed the reaction and I'm very eager to still keep going on this journey and see what I think about the other films.
"Who cares about something that just always gets a B-?" I love that. It is so true. The MCU took chances and risks. Some paid off, some didn't. There are some *incredible* movies and shows that we have already seen and yet to come, and some duds too.
My absolute favorite MCU movie. So much heart. So much love. Proving that family has nothing to do with blood. Of all the movies in the MCU for me this is the one that resonates with me the most.
Considering the entire Marvel universe is fantasy, I’m a little surprised that you didn’t like it. To each their own. This movie surprised me. Going in I wasn’t familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy. I was extremely skeptical of Rocket. But despite my misgivings I ended up loving this film for all of its action and yes even the silliness. The tone change was a relief and I appreciated the music soundtrack choices. Peter Quill is not necessarily the best character but he has his moments. Groot is great, of course. Rocket won me over pretty quickly. Especially after the bit with the prosthetic. I just had a blast with this movie.
Never heard of anyone in the 10 years this film has been out as disliking it. Even non marvel people who did not know it was part of the mcu or marvel all usually at worst like it. But majority love this film. And it is the best of the 3 of them.
It's so strange (in a good way) how differently people perceive art. For me, the Guardians are the most adult films of the MCU because of how much heart is woven into the stories. And this is the first reactor I've seen that is critical of the soundtrack, which I would argue is as central to the film as the characters themselves. Then again, I'm a big music nerd so to each their own. Still love ya, Kai. Looking forward to the next reaction.
I appreciate your honesty. I really haven’t heard too many people who don’t have this as one of their favorites. And I definitely never heard anyone say that they don’t live the soundtrack. I can’t wait to continue your Marvel reviews to see your final decisions. Very very interesting. Thank you
I think a big reason people like this movie was 1) the music. 👌🏻 and 2) it showed that they could bring together characters that fans had not heard of. I do think a lot would add 3) it was funny. But if the jokes don’t land for you they don’t land for you. Groot had us all crying by the end with “We Are Groot”.
The reason why I initially loved this movie was because it felt like a merger of Star Trek and Star Wars…but in the MCU. Peter Quill felt like a modern day Han Solo. It’s still in my top 5 after 31 MCU films.
I think this movie more than any other in the MCU showed the quality and care put into these films in the sense that every other character had a built in fan base but even many hard-core comics fans didn't know who The Guardians Of The Galaxy were, and this movie still made us care. Also, I hate to break it to you, but Groot is dead. The "baby Groot" at the end is a new creature, an offspring.
I explained everything that I could think of for why I didn't love it, so if you watched all of that and still don't understand then I'm not sure I can really help ya. Sorry!
I posted that before hearing your final thoughts. Still with that being said…I just don’t get it! I guess I’m going to have to just not understand. And for the record I did love the first Ironman as well. I absolutely hated the first Thor. So. That’s where I stand.
A long time ago, decades before the MCU became its own thing, there was a movie based on the marvel character Howard the duck. The final cut scene shows that character, which pretty much no one ever expected to ever see on the big screen ever again. Guardians of the Galaxy is indeed way apart from everything happening on Earth in the MCU at the moment, in tone too so the surprise and shock are quite understandable, I know I was as I had never heard of them before the movie came out. It's a whole different vibe I can enjoy now that I've grown accustomed to them.
When movies in the MCU were first coming out most people knew what to expect because Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor were already well known characters. I think so many people enjoyed this movie because no one knew what to expect going in and what they got was a fun adventure with some interesting and provocative characters. It was really the first MCU movie that existing comic book fans could go in with no expectations and really just enjoy the experience. Not to mention it’s the MCU’s introduction to events that take place off of Earth (and off of Asgard lol).
Actually iron man was a B list character so most people had no clue about him. And even Cap. Thor has so mythos in lore. But not the other two outside of the comics. So i call cap. Not pun intended.
I don't think I've ever seen rank Guardians so low. Not saying you're wrong, just surprising. It's your opinion we come to these for, so I'm in no way complaining, just taken aback. Coming off Cap 2, I get why the shift in tone is rough, thank you for explaining it. I think the Guardians will grow on you over time, but who knows. This movie was such a surprise, even to fans of the comics who kind of scratched their heads at the choice. While virtually everyone knows Groot and Rocket and Star-Lord now, they were not even B-tier comic characters at the time... quite fittingly considering where James Gunn took them with this story as a band of misfits. Odd side note, I took a first date to see this movie when it was out in theaters. Neither of us had seen it and overall we liked it, but she was real muted about the beginning. Turns out she'd recently lost her mother to cancer, so yeah... wasn't the best start for her.
Lots of things shape how we see films and this is just my first (and kinda second) time watching. I'm excited to see if my opinion changes later! Thanks for watching.
This quite a different movie. It won't land for everyone. A lot of people really love this movie, but things hit people different. We definitely didn't feel the same about Chris Pratt at the time this came out vs how we do today.
What I love about this movie: The humor (which did land for me), the characters of vastly different backgrounds & abilities, and the lore of the overall galaxy they're defending. What I didn't love about this movie: Actually agreed on the soundtrack (a lot of great songs, but forced over scenes they mostly don't fit with), standard villains (big & small) who conveniently pause in the middle of battle, and Nebula's motivations just never rang true to me. Oh, and I cannot think of any rational reason *in* the galaxy why the Nova Corps would design all of their atmospheric interceptors to be able to link together to create a huge energy "net" to stop...I don't know what, other than what they eventually stopped. Overall, though, this is one of my favorite MCU movies. When I watch a superhero flick I want it to be lighthearted, goofy entertainment...and Guardians delivered in spades!
The interceptors could link together in smaller groups to handle, for example a medium pirate ship. They could also stop natural asteroids if their stellar system had a lot of them.
I see what you are saying but I really appreciate the various TONES of the MCU movies because it really mirrors what the actual comic books are. There are super heroes that are in more serious settings and then there are the more not so serious storylines where you have more humor (i.e.. Guardians, Ant-man, and even Thor). Sometimes, it not so much about humor but the super power itself. Many fans don't really get onboard with, for example, Dr. Strange because it involves magic versus science fiction.
My opinions might change as I keep making my way through and get MORE of this franchise. Already interested to see what I might think 2-3 years from now too.
So, I'll say that I'm in the camp that loves this one. It's probably my least favorite of the three, but... it really did a good job for me, personally. The big thing is that it is a group of misfits, who... legitimately have no place being heroes, but they manage to make everything work in the end, and they come together as a... weird kind of family. As someone who highly values found families, that is one of, if not the biggest reason I love this movie. Fun fact, though. James Gunn initially wasn't interested in directing Guardians of the Galaxy until he really got thinking about the character Rocket Raccoon, and that was the character that really was his guiding force in the movies. I can really appreciate that... less so from this movie, and more so down the road. Still, as always, I can respect where you are coming from on this movie. I look forward to seeing your reactions to the other Guardians of the Galaxy movies going forward.
I was surprised that you didn't really enjoy this, but as you said it's very different from Winter Soldier and you really enjoyed that one. But this is one of the reasons I enjoy your reactions: You seem to come from a slightly different perspective than most others (and I mean that in a good way). So yeah, this was still fun to watch you watch, as usual. Keep it going. We're here for it
I took my GF at the time to watch this, and it was her first introduction to the MCU. She saw the opening and when "why did you take me to such a sad movie??" After the film was done, we went back and saw Captain America 1, then the sequel. It was one of the best moments to react to her first time seeing everything.
Dave Bautista who plays Drax the Destroyer I know not everyone watch it but he was a wrestler in the WWE. Karen Gillan who plays Nebula is also Amy Pond, a primary companion to the Eleventh Doctor in the science fiction series Doctor Who.
One of the things that Marvel was really successful was at making hardly known comics characters into stars(-lords 😛), Guardians of the Galaxy is the major example of that. Now you know Thanos, the Mad Titan, in his quest to get all 6 Infinity Stones. For what purpose? You'll need to keep watching. So far you have seen four of them, but unless you ask me more details I won't tell any more specifics, like their names. And Rocket's obsession for cybernetic prosthetics is really weird... You are on the right track on some of your speculations, but not entirely. Can't wait to see your reactions on how things plays out. Next movie is Avengers: Age of Ultron, so we'll see the whole gang together again.
One of my favorite scenes is Peter dropping the orb when presenting it to the Collector. That was unscripted, Chris Pratt simply lost his grip on the prop but stayed in character for the scene, and of course James Gunn used it because it was not only funny and something Peter Quill would do, but showed the character's humanity.
The infinity gems are another important thing for the future, for now 4 have been shown: the tresseract, the ether, loki's scepter, and the last one is the orb. There are two others that have not yet appeared but will appear in the future.
This is a prime example of what I stated in my comment under The Terminator. We can have a discussion of what you feel because you are honest about them, even though others may feel different. At this point in my watching, back in 2014, I ranked this movie as a close #2 to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I was starting to wonder if we were going to start getting movies that felt edging in favor of homogenous storytelling. A thing to kind of grab onto is that they try to fit each movie into a genre that makes sense, but try to build the universe where when others interact from other movies, it doesn't seem forced. Some movies are going to be close to Winter Soldier and others GoTG in tone, while some others will be nothing like them, but I've not seen them force the characters in their movies into genres they don't agree with.
I saw this in theaters opening night with my daughter. She loved it, I actually fell asleep and it is officially the only movie I’ve fallen asleep watching in my life. In theaters. I ended up rewatching it before the sequel came out and I did end up enjoying it more. I think because I knew what I was getting into. Time and distance has slowly opened me me up to it. I eventually decided the best way to approach the MCU is less like a movie series and more like episodic television [of the 2000’s]. Where you have a 22 episode season and while you’re working towards a season finale every once in a while you get some “meh” episodes. Even in the best shows out there.
This was the first MCU movie I ever saw! I went to go see it in theaters because I thought it looked cool not knowing it was Marvel and was hooked on the feeling the movie gave. It remains my favorite MCU movie to this day
The guardians of the galaxy is a very fun and amazing Marvel comic book series that wasn't very well known by the mainstream audience or even by Marvel fans who kind of stick within the Sol system so Earth based teams like Avengers, X-Men etc. But fans who loved the comic's adored them. Overall James Gunn did an amazing job at introducing these unknown characters to the mainstream audience making them a household name. James seems to be doing the same with DCU (DC's new shared universe) introducing an animated show following the Creature Commandos a group most people have no idea excited and a movie following the The Authority a DC Superhero group most mainstream fans don't know. People seem to forget that The Avengers were not household names before 2012's Avengers with characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor no studio wanted to make movies about them minus the Hulk who was pretty well known. X-Men were much more beloved throughout the 1980s to the 2000s from the New Mutant comics to the amazing 1990s X-Men Animated Series which is why studios jumped at grapping IP's like X-Men, Spider-Man, Hulk, Blade, Daredevil etc. So if James Gunn could make a talking Tree and a Raccoon household names there's no reason Creature Commandos or The Authority can't become the same level of known as Avengers or even The Justice League. Same goes with any unknown characters introduced as long as it's done well people will love these characters. Marvel was smart introducing their big hitters like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and then bring in lesser known characters. Music: And finally the music is amazing in all these movies and I love how they gave Starlord a Walkman something he did not have in the comics a really great change. I could listen to the soundtrack for hours both Guardians 1 and 2 and no doubt the third film as well which I believe will feature more 1980s music like the amazing Video Game. Original Team (Earth-691) The original guardians were introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 from 1969. This team was active in the 31st century in an alternative time-line of the Marvel Universe known as Earth-691. It seems this universe Divergences from Earth-616 (Main Marvel Universe) occurred around the early 1980s when Earth's climate collapsed in the 1980s due to the erosion of the ozone layer, a cancer epidemic broke out and humanity readapted with bionic implants, becoming a society of cyborgs. Then in 2001 Martians invaded Earth and decimated, consumed and enslaved humanity. For decades. Summed up this Earth had some tragic sci fi history compared to the mainline universe of Earth-616. The Earth-691 original team was made up of Vance Astro, Martinex T'Naga, Captain Charlie-27, and finally Yondu Udonta who is in this film and a character who also exists on Earth-616 as well. Vance Astro is also a character on Earth-616 with his counterpart version having some slight changes. More Popular Team (Earth-616) The team we see in this movie Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora made their first appearance in Annihilation: Conquest #6 from 2008 set on Earth-616 at the time of the Age of Hero's, Modern day just like this movie. Unlike the The Earth-691 team who existed in the far future. Down the line the team met a frozen Major Vance Astro, of the Guardians of the Galaxy a thousand years in the future. This is how they got the name "Guardians of the Galaxy" in the comics after Vance Astro informed them about his team. This Vance Astro was from Earth-691 the universe I spoke about above somehow traveling to Earth-616 (Main Marvel Universe) another universe in the past. Peter Quill, alias Star-Lord actually appeared in Marvel Preview #4 from 1975 as this fun Space Opera character but this has been retconned to Earth-791 or maybe it was always an alternate universe. Pretty much he was reintroduced in 2008 with a whole makeover to his character but parts of his origin story were kept like his mother dying etc. Drax first appeared in The Invincible Iron Man #55 from 1973 which is pretty cool. You'd never think by watching this film that Drax appeared in an Iron Man comic. Gamora first appeared in Strange Tales #180 from 1975 while Rocket Raccoon first appeared in Marvel Preview #7 from 1976 and finally Groot first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 from 1960. I imagine the creators of the Guardians Comic just went looking for very underused and unknown characters from Marvel's past and said "Hey these guys would make for a great team" thus this rendition of the Guardians was born. Most people don't even know about the original team.
Re: Vin Diesel's voice work. Don't know if anyone mentioned this to you, but Vin Diesel's script had all off Groot's "actual" lines in it so that Vin Diesel would be able to do all the correct inflections and emotion involved. Also, he did Groot's voice in all of the foreign translations that came out, learning how to say "I am Groot" in all the different languages while still conveying the same feelings in each line.
I appreciate your honesty. I have seen *far* too many reactors gush over every popular film because they believe if they give five star ratings to beloved films, they win followers. Personally I loved this film. It is a masterclass in how to introduce a cast of new characters to an unfamiliar audience. The comedy was great and the action was fun. And the soundtrack was a banger. I remember many years ago when the Lethal Weapon series of movies with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover was very popular. But one friend of mine absolutely refused to watch any of them. I finally asked her why and it was because Danny Glover had played a bad guy in The Color Purple and she would never watch any movie with him in it. Sometimes it is hard to realize that these people are actors and we have to separate their previous works or personal lives from the roles they play. It sounds like that may be your issue with Chris Pratt.
This one hurt a little. Out of the 42 MCU projects this movie is my number 1. I think it’s mostly for really personal reasons that just really connected to my life but I also love all these characters. The guardians just have a really unique aesthetic to them and stand out from the rest of MCU. From their team dynamic to their soundtrack etc. Also I really like their humor. Still enjoyed the reaction though.
I had the advantage of being a huge comic book nerd for decades before seeing this film, so all the characters were known to me - maybe that is one of the reasons why I was able to enjoy it so much! Loved the music, loved the humour, loved all the actors and characters. Worked for me!!
When I was 12, my father let me taste straight whiskey at a party. I HATED IT! Absolutely hated it. It was at the bottom of my list of things to eat or drink. Even broccoli rated higher. 50 years further down my life journey - different story. Let’s just pencil this movie in last place for now. We can always ink it into position later. Love how you structure your reactions. All of them. I’m especially enjoying tagging along on your MCU journey. Your honesty is appreciated. ❤
Definitely penciled until everything is watched! Because there was a movie in last place before this one and I am pretty confident that GOTG will not always be in last. Also, thank you so much.
Ok *THESE ARE NOT SPOILERS FOR ANY OF THE OTHER MOVIES*! I have some fun facts abot this one: 1. Comics stuff: Yondu was in the origanal team, although there were many versions of the team, Yondu was a member of the teams first original incarnation. All the characters and situations in Guardians were created by Arnold and/or Stan. The team first appeared in the partial reprint title Marvel Super-Heroes with issue #18 (January 1969), written by Arnold Drake and penciled by Gene Colan. So yeah- surprisingly this was made before the firs Star Wars, Sci-Fi was in it's prime, and Star Trek just started, so everybody who was a kid in 1969 was happy to read about a new side of Marvel The Guardians were finally given their own series in the existing title Marvel Presents, starting with issue #3 (February 1976). Steve Gerber, still handling the writing, reflected, a year BEFORE Star Wars. At the Post -Credit scene you can hear, and see a talking duck sipping alcohol... he has a name, that a lot of viewers will tell, (so as I) because he's not relevant to the story itself, he's just an Easter egg, and his name is 'Howard the duck'. - Also a fun fact George Lucas and Willard Huyck made a terrible movie with the same character and title in 1986. 2. Movie stuff: Michael Rooker (Yondu) is in most of the movies, that James Gunn made. Dave Bautistas (Drax) makeup in the first movie took over 5 hours to put on. ( He had to stand for most of it) When Peter drops the Orb, that wasn't in the script, Pratt acidentally dropped it, but it fit the character so well James Gunn decided to keep it in the final movie. Gunn offerd the overweight Pratt to CG a 6-pack on him, but Pratt managed to beat his own goal, he lose 60 pounds. And we don't want to forget abot the racoon Rocket was modeld after, Oreo.
I think you explained your reasoning behind your opinion well. No matter where someone's opinion stands on a movie, a reactor's honest assessment should always be appreciated IMO. There is a serious side to the movie concerning the development in Peter Quill's character. As a child, he got in a fight protecting a frog. As an adult, we see him kicking small creatures as well as using one as a make-shift mic. Outwardly, he no longer takes certain matters seriously. On the inside is a different matter. He never opened the gift from his mom. It seems doing would represent acknowledgement of his dying mother's request and his refusal to hold her hand. He spent his life trying to bury that acknowledgement. Perhaps he always felt undeserving of the gift. The events of the movie not only reawakened his need to protect others, but it brought back his lifelong inner turmoil over holding his mother's hand. Only when he resolved these feelings could he then bring himself to open his mother's gift. He is now able to acknowledge the pain of his past and what that gift represented.
I don't know if you caught it, but Denarian Saal, the Nova pilot who was leading the squadron holding back Ronan's ship, was played by Peter Serafinowicz who has a great number of credits to his name including the voice of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. Also, though I don't think it is conveyed well, the Groot we knew properly died, baby Groot is a new Groot. And, lastly, I'm with Kaiielle on ranking this movie near the bottom of the MCU heap.
I am groot. (Translation: Fun reaction to a movie you didn't dig too much (for the time being))! 👍 I appreciate that you can still get into the movie and find things to like, and then nicely articulate why you didn't like what you didn't like in the review part. Definitely Groot, Rocket and Drax are the highlights of the flick. And for me, also the production design. Anyway, looking forward to your continuing journey thru the MCU! Oh btw, fun random fact: the actor that played the "What a bunch of a-holes" NovaCorp officer (Peter Serafinowicz) was the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars Ep 1 The Phantom Menace! :) The actor who played Maul physically (Ray Park) was an accomplished martial artist, but had a strong Scottish accent, and I guess George Lucas didn't think Darth Maul should sound Scottish 🤣
Regardless of how it fits, or how much you like it or not, you gotta admit, GOTG has the BEST soundtrack like, ever! One thing I love at this point is that even with what you've seen so far in the MCU, each movie is it's own thing. Winter Soldier was a political thriller, this one a Sci-Fi Fantasy film, Avengers a team up film, the first Captain America was a period piece, Thor more sword/sorcery in a way, and so on. They all connect together but hit many types of genres that keeps changing as the films go on.
For sure one of the funniest MCU movies, if not the funnies. And the only thing I'll say is about really both Guardians movies, is that the sound track is always great! If you're into more retro music especially, like 70s and 80s, you'll love the sound tracks to these movies. But yes, Bradley Cooper does in fact play a talking "raccoon" in these movies :p
The dog at the end, who was luckily freed at the explosion, is Cosmo the Soviet Spacedog, he has special powers, he is so awesome. Tbh i like this movie but not the second Guardians movie.
Hi KL. Love the shirt! My old boss, and still friends with him, used to wear shirts with that logo and is Canadian. He is the president of Gameworks. An arcade franchise that used to be owned by Sega, and was 'featured' in The Last of Us game, in the arcade mall scene. I was the last technician before they all closed in 2021, but he reopened the one in Seattle in 2022, the same LoU location.
It's very refreshing to finally see someone who doesn't enjoy this movie like most people seem to. I also don't appreciate the style or the humor, especially coming off of Winter Soldier.
I was kinda on the fence for awhile on this one but after I finished the MCU I went back and rewatched most of the movies and found that I like this one a lot more now. Rocket is definitely my favorite. Looking forward to Age Of Ultron!!
if i'm not mistaken, the way the Ravagers protected the city against Necrocraft's "Emolation Initiative" (the dive-bombing) was inspired by the arcade game Space Invaders
I hope you take your time for all the stuff that is in the MCU. I very much enjoy all your reactions and would love to see you react to every single thing (maybe even Agents of SHIELD?) even if it would take years to catch up with where we are now. The MCU had really time to grow... so it's only logical to take your time to enjoy it :) Btw. This movie is one of my favorites. I was actually not expecting that it could be a "least favorite" for anyone out there. Guess everyone ticks different. ^^"
It will take me almost the whole year to get "caught up" with you all on the necessary films and TV shows. And I do want to dabble into shows like Hawkeye, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, etc. MCU will be here a while!
I remember when this came out, I had almost zero want to see this movie. Full disclosure Im a wrestling fan so I know of Dave Bautista (Drax) and WWE programming promoted the heck out of it. I eventually relented and went to the theater to see it, and I was glad I did. The music in the movie is in my wheelhouse and I actually ended up loving the movie.
I liked this movie! It wasn't the best one, but it still had a lot of good moments in there, even if cheesy at times. Rocket was my favorite in this movie!
Someone had to sit down and come up with a comic about a giant talking tree and a racoon with a machine gun. That was a moment in the history of our species
Great reaction. I love this movie cause it has so much action and comedy along with heartwarming emotions. The soundtrack is incredible witb sone of my favoritesongs. Can't wait to see the next Marvel Monday. 😊
I'm a moderate outlier with this movie. I didn't love it the way most people seemed to, and I didn't dislike it. It was just... fine. I adore Rocket and Groot, both individually and as a pair, and the two were easily my favorite part of the movie. I really wish we could have a movie of *just* Rocket and Groot. I was about to quote my favorite Rocket line ever, but I can't remember if it was in this movie or volume two, and I don't want to accidentally spoil anything. I have a hard time explaining how I feel about Drax, because I loved the humor about him being too literal, but otherwise didn't care much for him in this movie. I was fine with Quill, but that's it. He was there. He was fine. And Gamora, for some reason I can't put into words, just irritated me. The soundtrack isn't for me personally, but it too was fine. (That word just fits how I feel about the whole movie so well!) For me, the only scenes that really stand out in my memory are all scenes with Rocket and Groot. But there were definitely scenes in this movie that I did *not* like. Quill and Gamora on the balcony talking about footloose, for one example, and the most egregious being that "dance battle", which made me physically cringe. But when I really think about it, I believe my lukewarm feelings about this movie come down to Ronin. Any time he was onscreen I just kind of tune out. As a villain I found him completely one-dimensional, bland, not at all intimidating, and he was defeated far too easily to make the climax of the movie feel satisfying. Unsatisfying final confrontations seem to be a common theme among all the movies I rank at the bottom of the MCU, actually. I do love that you're keeping your opinions real. Keep it up! Everyone has different tastes, and I'm always fascinated to learn why someone might not connect with a movie I love or might love a movie I hate. I know the feeling of not being keen on a movie everyone seems to love. You're not alone. There are multiple movies I don't like at all that people almost universally call "Great," "Flawless," or "Classic," and one director who many people say is one of the best ever whose entire filmography I either dislike or outright hate. I'm here for your reactions, whether I agree with them or not!
I loved this movie when it came out, mostly cause the soundtrack was relatable for the same reasons, my mom used to blast those same tunes, but now since our relationship is non existent the value has left me 💜
It's always fun to see peoples takes on these movies, and everyone obviously has different movies they like and dislike. Most people I've seen have this as one of their favorites, but it's interesting to see someone who isn't that hot on it.
Wow! I'm shocked how low you rated it. Maybe because for me nothing is as bad as Thor 2. Lol I love the music, but it took quite a while for this one to grow on me. Looking forward to the next one.
The duck at the end is Howard the Duck, and I'm surprised this one is your least favorite. It has so much heart and the Guardians Trilogy is one of the best regarded of the MCU trilogies
@kaiielle they take a while but the universe that has been created with all these different characters has been very rewarding, despite what some negative people may say!
I'm the complete opposite. Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite MCU movie and second-favorite MCU story, after WandaVision. Winter Soldier was my least-favorite MCU movie, and in fact is the movie that convinced me that I don't need to see all of the MCU movies. As a Generation X person, I absolutely loved the '80s soundtrack!
Fun fact - The reason the Kree hate Xandar so much is one time a Kree warship run out of space gas near Xandar and Nova Prime told them to kick rocks. 2000 years later and here we are. The Kree can hold a grudge
i can see what you mean about getting introduced to so many characters at once… however this film was widely perceived as something totally new so i think a lot of people just went into the movie as if it were any other movie and not an mcu movie
I loved this movie when I first watched it in the cinema. It was such a different vibe for the MCU, that was exciting! Yes, it doesn't mesh well with the feeling of the previous movie, but you gotta remember at the time, we had a 4 month break between these movies releasing, so it was a lot less jarring. Upon rewatching it later, I like it less and less. Obviously the jokes don't land as well if you've seen them before. But the thing that, for me, gets really grating on rewatch is that 75% of the dialog IS THEM SHOUTING, _constantly_. I'm looking forward to Avengers: Age of Ultron next!
Yeah, time in between movies might certainly help. Oh gosh, the shouting is something that I didn't even think of, but that's a great point and I totally understand that.
Also most people had seen trailers and marketing videos so they had a pretty good idea what this movie was before they saw it. I am of course very against seeing trailers because they ruin everything, but sometimes helps about the vide. Same thing happened to a friend of mine with Lord of the rings. He didn't liked it at all because he thought that was a medieval story movie. Well......
Really surprised by your reaction and how low you rate this, but respect that this is your opinion on this film. With so many more films to come sure your ratings will continue to change.
You're right about Ronan, unfortunately he had to represent a conflict between 2 other cultures we never got a chance to meet at this point. If he was instead a sequel villain and we had a movie to explore the Kree culture then I think he would be better since he is an extreme of that culture.
I definitely enjoyed Iron Man 3 way more than this, yes! Don't worry I've had my fair share of comments with people being surprised. And some people being really rude. 😅
One of my favorite MCU films, aside from Winter Soldier. Edit: Remember, the Guardians are the "comedians" of the MCU, so their movies are supposed to be a little silly at times. But the hidden messages are there. I think you'll like Vol.2
Hey. Always love your reactions.😍. One of my favourite movies to be honest. Personally I do love every aspect u said that u hate. However, I loved the genuine reaction though☺️.Everyone feels their own way towards stuff. Especially towards movies... I think in future for MCU movies going into a film with the hype of the previous movie would affect the viewing experience. There are lots of characters in MCU and it might cause a bias within the viewer. Just my opinion. Can't wait for the next reaction though🥳🥳
Now that the two different tones are abundantly clear to me, I'll do my best to try and "forget" any feelings of past movies, even though they're all connected.
38:54 NOOOOO WAY. now that you say this was made for kids; having seen this when I was 10 and loving it, probably does mean it was made for kids. touché
kaiielle the duck in the end credit scene was marvel's howard the duck who had his own movie back in 1986 or 87 starring leah thompson who played marty mcfly's mom in back to the future . it became a cult classic
I like the movie, but perhaps because of Peter's scene with his mother and Groot's death, I never watch it and it's hard for me to see reactions from it, but with you it looks more refreshing.
I didn't really care for it at first either, but when you see what comes next, it may be one of your favorites. It is for me. Just keep watching the story unfold.
Despite my love for this movie, I understand why you aren’t the biggest fan. The only reason I actually got into the MCU was because of this movie, and it was the first one I saw, so to me, everything else felt jarring after this! Guardians is kinda a stand-alone story to everything else, which is why I like it, I don’t wanna have to watch three other movies to understand one, like how much Avengers played a role in Iron Man 3, so you couldn’t exactly only watch the Iron Man movies and expect it to all make sense, that’s the best thing about Guardians to me, they do their own thing! It’s okay if we don’t share opinions though, I’ll be excited for your reaction to the second one
I know it's the simplest thing, and I've seen this movie a lot of times, but it wasn't until this reaction that I realized Sony created the Walkman. Backdoor product placement. I mean, WAYYYYY backdoor. Anyway, loved your reaction!
I feel none of it had really gone over your head. You pretty much nailed its essence. You just didn’t personally enjoy it, for much of the same reasons people generally love it. The overall story is serious and touching, but maybe on the corny side. It’s a pretty standard heroes vs villains mould. It’s an important plot point in the MCU, but it’s all actor-driven storytelling, and packed full of character introductions.
The reasons you didn't like the movie is the reason i, and most of us, liked it 😅. The humor , the silly superhero shots that they also mock . The soundtrack. But most of all the characters . All of them have suffered and had been closed to their self. Until Quil brought them together . We liked the entirely different style and place , and the vast world. Fun fact. This is not Groot that regrows , this is his offspring. And not all branches could give a Groot, rocket searched the most likely to be spawn.
The Guardians overall aren’t my favorite corner of the MCU either. I do think the characters and relationships are well done though and some characters grow on you more than others. Great reaction though.
Nice of you to admit your bias, but I'm not clear why you'd allow anything to influence consciously. The movies aren't related, so I don't get why you'd want them to be. Reminds me of the reaction to Alien 3. It's a decent movie, but folks went into it with expectations, which ruined it for them. I can't fathom such a mindset.
Your comment confuses me a little because I'm not sure what you mean by "aren't related" when you're talking about a movie that is part of a series/franchise. The story in this movie is connected to previous films as I finally got to put a name to a face (Thanos) and it also introduced another Infinity Stone. Do you tell people watching all the Star Wars movies that they aren't related to one another, so they need to drop all biases and expectations of previous films when viewing another one? Now, if your comment is actually about the tone/style of this movie compared to some others, I explained that in my review. It's clear the MCU has a couple different approaches and I am preferring one over the other. There is nothing wrong with having a bit of a preference. My mindset going into every movie for this channel is excitement and I always hope to enjoy every movie I watch. But just because I have that intention, doesn't mean that is the end result. Do you love every movie you've ever seen? Have you never gone into a movie hoping to love it and then the credits roll and you realize you don't?
Your reaction is odd. This film was the point when Marvel really hooked me. It's a comic book story which would seem to be impossible to be made into a movie, but they pulled it off with amazing results. Believe me, I had ZERO interest in seeing this beforehand, but the mother/son dynamic, the irreverence, the ridiculous characters... It's like an absurd party in which everybody is having a blast--and making a couple of subtle points about friendship and love in the (wildly fun) process.
I'm glad you feel that way! I wish I could say the same, and maybe after I've watched more films and shows in the franchise and am revisiting it, I'll feel the same too!
@@kaiielle Oh, I don't think it's that big of a deal. All sorts of things lead us to react in different ways to films on one day and differently on the next. Being in a silly mood and watching Airplane! rather than watching Airplane! right after coming home from a funeral produces, of course, quite different results.
That is VERY surprising that this is your least favorite movie. It is my favorite up to this point. I've rewatched it the most of all the MCU movies, even to this day.
Ohhh boy, I think you're gonna struggle with some of the other MCU movies in your future. I think it's best to look at the MCU as a candy shop. Sometimes you get a great treat and sometimes the taste is just not for you. Most often the taste is at least decent. It seems we have a similar taste in these movies, so I'll be especially excited for you to react to certain movies over others.
Oh yeah, that's how I look at the MCU now honestly. Not everything will be amazing and not everything will be "meh". I know there's more of this style to come, so I'm eager to keep going and see what I think of it all!
Definitely. I will be curious how you'll handle the Disney+ tv shows as well. You're not close to getting to that point yet, but after the first 3 phases, a few of those shows become necessary to understanding what's going on in some of the films. It's really highly debatable whether or not it was a smart move for Marvel to do that (since it's just soooo much content to get through), but it's what they did 😅
@@nikolaiquack8548 Don't worry, I have close friends guiding me and I will definitely be incorporating 4 TV shows here on the channel before some films. 😊
Finally caught up and I gotta say that you have become my top 3 favorite people who have reacted to these movies and I can't wait for the next upload/reaction. Also dang I thought you'd take a liking to quill, but still enjoyed the reaction none the less.
What? No request for a particular emoji? So, this is really more of a 'comic book' movie. All of the other movies so far have been based here on earth, or based in characters that have more human sensibilities and frailties. As for the tone shift... I hear you. I think it might have to do with how close you are watching them one after the other. (As you mentioned.) I watched these when they came out in the theaters, and I enjoyed the shift in tone. Winter Soldier was very serious. Almost somber. I like uplifting, and I like comedy. (Even if it's a little forced, as long as they're having fun with it.) The music: I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Coincidentally, "Hooked on a Feeling" was one of the songs popular on the radio the one year I actually owned a radio (before my brother broke it.) 1973-1974. I'm really more of a classical music guy (always have been) but I do enjoy the songs that were on KSLQ (St. Louis) that year. Ah, well. As for the humor? Well, I actually enjoyed this. This is one of my favorite MCU movies. Iron Man is #1, Captain America is #2. Then this one. And, all of the others fall into different places depending on how I'm feeling when I watch them again. I won't say anything about any of the others. I will say that I am really looking forward to Guardians #3. What else? Well... it's a big universe. There's always going to be more, and more, and more... Eventually, it can become so overwhelming that we just shut down. For what it's worth, I was never a big comic book enthusiast. Although, back in the early 70's I did enjoy the Spiderman comics. (I have enjoyed all the movie iterations of Spiderman. Toby Maguire's best, Tom Holland's 2nd, and Garfield's 3rd. But... I enjoyed them all. Probably because Spiderman is my favorite comic book character. As always, Thank you for the watch. I'm looking forward to the next one. Take care!
Thanks for joining me for this reaction everyone! Next up is Avengers: Age of Ultron coming out on March 6 and so excited for that one. Remember to keep your comments spoiler-free and also keep things respectful. Please share your thoughts on this movie below! ❤ KL

You should think about reacting to the HISHE for each movie...
Let yourself have fun with these movies Kaiielle, they are supposed to be stupid funny XD
Gotta let your guard down. =)
Nebula is played by Karen Gillan and a movie to watch her without makeup is "Jumanji, welcome to the Jungle". With Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Icing on the cake.....Jack Black.
@@TheWindcrow I go into every movie wanting to enjoy it. If it doesn't work for me, it doesn't work for me!
I have a friend who talked his GF into watching this movie by saying that Vin Deisel is in it. It took the GF half way through to ask "So where's Vin Deisel?" The "I am Groot" response earned a slug on the arm.
LOL
But… I’ll bet she likes the movie anyway.
The Writer/Director James Gunn actually wrote the script with Groot’s true dialogue. Only people who have that copy are him and Vin Diesel. That’s why each “I am Groot” is different.
I think what makes this film so great is the huge amount of heart it has.
Were you there?
@@MoMoMyPup10 I mean, I suppose we don't know if it's the exact take. But it's pretty well-known that he did drop it in a take and they liked it better that way. Don't have to be at the set to know things, my guy.
@@MoMoMyPup10 I was actually there. It was too funny.
@@XiaoyuuuYT I don't remember seeing you
@@MoMoMyPup10 were you there? Also this is a pretty well known fact, didn't have to be there to know that hence why it's widely known.
Gamora's reputation precedes her, as you saw from everyone in the prison. In the comics she's called "The most dangerous woman in the galaxy." 😁
She loves c3po but dislikes this film. Super weird.
I appreciate your honesty. I really haven’t heard too many people who don’t have this as one of their favorites. And I definitely never heard anyone say that they don’t live the soundtrack. I can’t wait to continue your Marvel reviews to see your final decisions. Very very interesting. Thank you
I appreciate that you appreciate it! Thank you!
Crazy that you didn't like it more. Most people really like this one. We all have our tastes, though.
Or in her case, lack of taste. It's one thing to not like it. It's another thing to say it's worse than Thor 2.
@Kaylakaze Maybe she likes the way thor looks, and it distorts her opinion? My wife also loves every thor movie, hahahaha 😆
I'm sad I didn't get emotional during it! Maybe on a re-watch after I've seen some of the other Guardians movies.
@@kaiielle Everyone feels their own ways! Zero wrong with you not liking any movie. Nothing can be everyone's favorite.
@@kaiielleif you did not like the film why would you ever watch the sequels? Makes zero sense.
The Blue Alien Prisoner that Groot picked up by his nose was voiced by Nathan Fillion.
Lol, I never knew that!
What?!? That is hilarious.
I have to admit it’s my number 1 MCU movie as well. I can’t quite understand why you didn’t love it.
Me at the beginning of watching this movie: "Who da hell are these people?!"
Me by the end of the movie: "HELL YEAH LET'S GOOOO! More please!"
I'm glad you love this! You'll probably enjoy my reaction to the second one a bit more then. 😊
So awesome!
I love when accidents like that are kept in!
It's nice to see a bit more of Thanos here. You're probably right that Ronan even with the Power Stone would not have been able to beat him.
Pretty much my favorite MCU movie. Different strokes ...
Indeed! Glad you love it!
Music:
And finally the music is amazing in all these movies and I love how they gave Starlord a Walkman something he did not have in the comics a really great change. I could listen to the soundtrack for hours both Guardians 1 and 2 and no doubt the third film as well which I believe will feature more 1980s music like the amazing Video Game.
Original Team (Earth-691)
The original guardians were introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 from 1969.
More Popular Team (Earth-616)
The team we see in this movie Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora made their first appearance in Annihilation: Conquest #6 from 2008 set on Earth-616 at the time of the Age of Hero's, Modern day just like this movie.
@LittleGalaxyBoy As always coming through with the extensive background knowledge! Thanks for taking the time to compile all this info.
11:55 ....."Because he's Vin Diesel, all I hear is The Iron Giant"..... All I hear is "Family, family, family"....
That's so cool!
I'm glad you love it and have a connection to it! Glad you enjoyed it still, sorry I don't feel the same. 😭
I have some fun facts abot this one:
So yeah- surprisingly this was made before the firs Star Wars, Sci-Fi was in it's prime, and Star Trek just started, so everybody who was a kid in 1969 was happy to read about a new side of Marvel
The Guardians were finally given their own series in the existing title Marvel Presents, starting with issue #3 (February 1976).
( He had to stand for most of it)
When Peter drops the Orb, that wasn't in the script, Pratt acidentally dropped it, but it fit the character so well James Gunn decided to keep it in the final movie.
Gunn offerd the overweight Pratt to CG a 6-pack on him, but Pratt managed to beat his own goal, he lose 60 pounds.
And we don't want to forget abot the racoon Rocket was modeld after, Oreo.
Just remember: you had a week between Winter Soldier and Guardians. We had four months.
I appreciate you saying that about my reviews! Thanks so much. And thank you for telling me about Peter, that's so fun!
I have a feeling I'll like it more as I continue through the franchise too, but wait and see!
if i'm not mistaken, the way the Ravagers protected the city against Necrocraft's "Emolation Initiative" (the dive-bombing) was inspired by the arcade game Space Invaders
GALAGA!
I hope you take your time for all the stuff that is in the MCU. I very much enjoy all your reactions and would love to see you react to every single thing (maybe even Agents of SHIELD?) even if it would take years to catch up with where we are now.
The MCU had really time to grow... so it's only logical to take your time to enjoy it :)
Btw.
Yeah, I kinda feel the same way about this movie as you do. I didn't really care about the characters in this movie, well other than Groot and Rocket.
That is wild that you liked Hulk and Thor 2 more than Guardians 🤔
Can confirm, I'm wild.
woahhh that’s wild Thor 2 is one of the worst comic book movies i’ve ever seen in my life but everyone has their own taste
I'll definitely be watching this at home later. I have to backtrack to the beginning of your MCU journey. This is definitely one of my favs!
How disappointed were you to find out she didn’t like this movie lol?!
The duck at the end is Howard the Duck, and I'm surprised this one is your least favorite. It has so much heart and the Guardians Trilogy is one of the best regarded of the MCU trilogies
I'll be rewatching the MCU eventually now that I'm nearing the end of Phase 4. I'm sure my ranking of the Guardians movies will change on a re-watch.
@kaiielle oh wow I never expected a reply! I hope so! And I look forward to you reacting to the future GOTG Christmas special.
Haha nah I reply to a lot of comments! I'm excited to get to that. I've slowed down on the frequency of my MCU reactions, but still chugging along!
Well......
Quill dropping the orb was actually unscripted and unintentional. It was going to be an outtake, but the director liked it and kept it in.
Really surprised by your reaction and how low you rate this, but respect that this is your opinion on this film. With so many more films to come sure your ratings will continue to change.
Yeah, I have a feeling this movie won't stay at the bottom as I keep going through the franchise! But we'll see.
You're right about Ronan, unfortunately he had to represent a conflict between 2 other cultures we never got a chance to meet at this point. If he was instead a sequel villain and we had a movie to explore the Kree culture then I think he would be better since he is an extreme of that culture.
Howard the Duck.........One of the first Marvel movies from the 80`s 90`s.
Queen of the Hot Take!😁
You love Iron Man 3 and Guardian’s is your least favorite so far?! You keep it interesting. You probably made someone cry!😂
I have a soft spot for this movie ngl it’s my go to marvel movie to play when i’m doing other things… drax’s lines always kill me
38:54 NOOOOO WAY.
now that you say this was made for kids; having seen this when I was 10 and loving it, probably does mean it was made for kids. touché
kaiielle the duck in the end credit scene was marvel's howard the duck who had his own movie back in 1986 or 87 starring leah thompson who played marty mcfly's mom in back to the future . it became a cult classic
Oh I can't imagine the other "jarring" feeling going from this to something like Winter Soldier! 😅 Appreciate your comments, thank you!
My favorite!
Got sad when she said least favorite lol
So sorry! I liked Vol 2 much more if that makes you feel better.
@@kaiielle Ahhh, good to know. You're in good hands, then ☺
Finally caught up and I gotta say that you have become my top 3 favorite people who have reacted to these movies and I can't wait for the next upload/reaction. Also dang I thought you'd take a liking to quill, but still enjoyed the reaction none the less.
Groot sees Rocket as a father figure
Fun fact: Nebula wins every Robot game contest she enters
Your comment about the music is something I can relate to. I felt that way about A Knight’s Tale it ruined the movie for me.
(Even if it's a little forced, as long as they're having fun with it.)
The music: I grew up in the 60's and 70's.
Take care!
Oh no I forgot to ask for an emoji!! Shame on me. 🤣
Thanks for your comments! Appreciate it a lot and I'm looking forward to more too!
