  • Video of one of my gift projects showing the step-by-step process of making this Wood Magazine November 2012 construction project.
    Murphy definitely got in the way on this one. Never fails that the one you decide to shoot the video for will give you the most problems. :-)

    Thanks for the video Ron... Thanks to you I have finally found a use for my scroll saw.... The blades you recommended are the ticket! Now I use my saw all the time for template making, cutting inlay it's really become a very helpful tool in my shop... the next thing I have to do is make some 0 clearance inserts for my saw.... Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I know it's a lot of extra work....

    I am a Mechanical Engineer having worked in the oil & gas and mining industries. I did quite a bit of photography back when 35mm was popular. My first edited video was for my Christmas Reindeer Ornament. The editing thing was a bit of a slow start and I must credit Matthias Wandel for a lot of input and patience on his part helping me improve my videos. Glad you enjoy the videos.

    Great video! I will have to make a school of fish now. I like the one without the extra lid inside.

    Great project video. I have worked with purpleheart in the past, and your roght about it being a very hard wood, I did not know about the light turning it back to purple. But liked working with it. Thanks for a great project idea!!

    Very nice little box. I have been making all different kinds of boxes and this would be a nice one to add to the collection. A note on the "keys" going out one side and not the other, maybe your saw was not square. Just a thought, I know I have made a few with that same issue and checked the saw and it was off just a small bit......Anyhow, Great video! Thanks!

    The internal lid does make it a bit easier to slide the outside lid into place. Other than that it just makes the box smaller.

    cool. yea, i remember when you did that, in fact it was that specific article on Matts page where i shortly thereafter subscribed to your channel. Thanks for answering.

    I assumed light turned it purple (maybe air). A side lying on the bench remains brown until it is turned over for a while. Direct sunlight will kill the purple. From Wikipedia - Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light darkens the wood to a brown color with a slight hue of the original purple. Apparently it can darken to a brown over time.

    I spent 8 to 10 days making the five pieces. My hands and fingers are getting to where they bother me on these hard scroll saw cuts, so I think this is about the last of these thick wood projects.

    I have not had good results with a spiral cut blade. My experience is they are difficult to control (wander off course easily), result in a wider cut and the cut wasn’t as smooth as with a regular blade. And, I never thought about using a spiral cut blade for this project.
    I only have one 41tpi spiral blade. Just for fun I just tried it on a 1-3/4” piece of purpleheart and it took forever to make a 1/8” cut and then stalled out completely. Did not seem to be a good choice.

    Nice video Ron. Would it be possible to use a spiral cut blade on the scroll saw or is that wood simply too dense? Thanks!!

    mr. ron, i've been watching your video's for awhile now, and what sets you apart i think from some other channels is how well done your video production is. well shot and lighted. concise explanations, sharply edited, but still letting some of your personality in. no rambling on, etc. they're just well made, can't say anything else. Just wondering because you seem rather at ease with cameras/PC's. Was your background in media/communications or do you let the 'grandkids' bother with editting?

    Looks like a lot of effort, but the outcome certainly was worth it. Very nice!

    First time seeing this vid. Couple questions for you......What width of bandsaw blade? What size scroll blade? And, what speed does the scrollsaw run at, id it is variable speed?

    • @RonaldWalters2010
      @RonaldWalters2010  7 лет назад +1

      1/8" band saw blade. Scroll saw is variable speed. Pick a speed that suits the cut being made. These are slow cuts in this thick material. I was probably running half speed, slow and easy let the blade do the cutting do not force it. Do not remember the scroll saw blade used... try Flying Dutchman Blades... Very good video. I wold like to do an intarsia heath ledger joker. The
    problem is I can't find the woods because the colors. So I was thinking
    use acrylic color diluted with water. What is your advice?

    • @RonaldWalters2010
      @RonaldWalters2010  7 лет назад

      Exotic hardwoods with brilliant colors can be very disappointing with time. Bright red, yellow or other colors all tend to turn to brown with exposure to light. Purple heart holds its color with time but gets darker. So using a dye is a good choice for use on some woods. The wood needs an even grain structure to take the dye evenly, softer wood will work better than hardwood. I have two videos showing the use of water based dyes. “Mice & Cheese Wood Intarsia” and “Water Based Dyes and Baltic Birch Plywood”. Another which uses different natural color woods - “Keepsake Wood Intarsia Boxes”.

    • @rodlrfilmmakercreator1460
      @rodlrfilmmakercreator1460 7 лет назад

      Do you mean that red yellow acrylic color will be brown? If I dilute the acrylic with water maybe is not too brilliant color. But if I put lacquer on the wood maybe that no happen, right? Thanks for your response. I want to try both, Dye colors and acrylic colors.

    • @RonaldWalters2010
      @RonaldWalters2010  7 лет назад

      No… Exotic hardwoods with brilliant colors such as Brazilian Koa and Padauk (bright red) and Hedge or Osage Orange (yellow) and many other pretty wood with distinctive natural color darken with age and exposure to UV and lose their brilliant color. I don’t know anything about trying to dye wood with acrylic. As far as I am concerned acrylic is paint and you will tend to lose the wood grain definition. Painting wood pieces is not really the intent of intarsia. Another possibility is using water base fabric dye (Rit Dye). The Briwax dye is expensive but works well as I have shown.
