Thanks so much for this video! I had been eyeing the Nero for a while now to replace my Osprey I used on the Camino Frances last year, and the Nero will serve me on my next Camino and hopefully on many more adventures! Seeing how to efficiently pack it really helps me out a lot! Thanks again and keep up the amazing work!
Very good information. I have about 5 packs for different operations. This information I need now because I will be doing some backpacking with my son and grandson. Light weight is good. I will have a small gas stove in my pack and an Esbit for back-up. Thanks.
Great vid, Jason. This gives me some new ideas on how to better pack my CDT because it's very similar. Would you be willing to do a video specifically on how you pack/carry your electronics/camera for filming? I have a new rig now for the GoPro and I'm finding stowing it away is a challenge with the extra accessories I have.
Great way to pack. It's crazy how similar our setups are. Funny how that is after watching your videos over the last few years. Although I have the Gossamer gear G4. I even flatten the back like you do when its packed. Thanks for all the reviews and tips.
I started carrying an REI Flash sit pad. It doubles as a pillow because of a snap attached to it, but you can easily unfold it at night if your feet get cold. It’s 3 oz. and I like its dual purpose. Might be something you’re interested in if you’re using your Phoenix UQ!
I had seen in one of your videos you mentioned maybe doing a video on pot cozies. I'm curious of you've made one? I'm looking and can't find it. Just interested in your suggestions. Thanks much! - Steve
If you can recommend a synthetic shirt printing company I'd gladly upload the design. I haven't found a company that does it. This seems to be a common request for any outdoor youtube channel that puts out shirts too.
I like your system.... Would Hyperlyte POD's help you with the interior. Specifically everything above the nylofume contents ? Or possily that concept ? Good Stuff... thanks Kel = )
Nice info! I'm always picking up something new from your videos. Was the mio and clip on hand sanitizer a Gary inspired add-on haha! Just spotted his earlier today.
Outdoor Adventures good to know! I keep it with my food/ toiletries. I'll have to give it a shot! I hope this isn't too much to ask but could you help me or point me in the direction for how/what to pack for an overnight? I'm using a tent system for now (3lb) and packing 3 meals for each day. I could make up a list if it would help but I'm really thinking I'm over packing or over weight. I filled a 65L backpack 😥
I know it is off-topic in relation to this video, but could you explain your continuous ridgeline that you have mentioned in other video's? Or maybe show how you have yours setup? Thanks!
Excellent video and very useful info, as always. Thanks! Off this subject, have you posted a video about how to manage breaks on the longer hikes? I'm just getting into backpacking and this is something I can't find any info on. For instance, for like 40 miles, do you hike all day every day? Do you hike in the morning and evening and break for the heat of the day? Thanks!
I usually wake up pretty early have some breakfast and on my way around 7am. I'll hike 10 miles or so and stop around noon for a shoes off lunch break. Get some calories and get going. Around 3 or so I'll take a 15 minute break, maybe while I filter water and then get back on the trail. I like hiking long miles though. Obviously everyone is different and you need to listen to your body for breaks.
go to camelcamelcamel.com and put the amazon link in there, you can set a watch price on it. Just leave it there. Usually they go down to 40-50% off. I got mine for 50% off a few years ago.
Why spend all that money on a Ghost when MH has different models for cheaper price. And Columbia sells puffies too that do the exact same thing as the Ghost and pack just as small. People are getting so snowed by these expensive UL gear companies.
Columbia products have really gone down hill over the last few years. You have to trust the gear. That being said the msrp ghost whisperer is insane. Wait till there is a sale I got mine 50% off. It's held up to abuse and it's warm down to just above freezing with just a t-shirt. Add a gspor barrier via a rain jacket and you will be warm just below freezing which should never happen in 3 season weather. For cheaper warmer and lighter products check out montbell. I've had a lot of luck with the Alpine light for winter backpacking.
Outdoor Adventures I've been wearing Columbia Clothing for years and do trust them. Don't get me wrong cause I see where you are coming from I love MH but only get the stuff when it's discounted and use my EMS discount. Grove City always has some good MH coats on sale. Was just saying that there are different models that are cheaper especially when Columbia owns MH. I like watching your vids and its cool we are Western PA people. Not that far from you in Beaver County. Good luck on your AT hike 👍
For insulative products I've had stitches come out and zippers snag. Just can't trust them again. Bought a $300 Omniheat jacket for skiing and it ripped on the first fall. Maybe I'm just unlucky but I've heard this from others as well. Anyway just sharing my experience with them. Back a few years ago they were awesome. Anyway I would never ever recommend paying full price for the GW. Wait for a sale is what I've told everyone, or I refer them to montbell. The retail price is bloated and insane.
Personally, I wouldn't put my puffy at the bottom. If I have to stop because I get injured or for some other reason, I may need the puffy as a belay jacket to keep warm. Emptying the pack isn't a great idea in an emergency.
I'm looking to upgrade to something small and lightweight. I currently use a exos 48 and a 3f ul 40L framless. I've gotten my base weight down fairly low. With a few days of food and water and fuel I'm just barely over 22 lbs. I'm a weekend warrior so usually only do 3 to 4 days most.(longer I would switch back to exos.) Would this be a recommended pack for those weights or do I need to be lighter before buying one. I really have mu eye on a Nero!
I have the same pack but no hipbelt pouches. I’ve been thinking about trying the non-padded ones from my arc haul. Are the padded ones really comfortable?
Zpacks says the non padded pockets won't work with the nero. I'd assume the would flip and slide all over. the padded belt pockets make the nero belt feel like the haul or blast
Good to know. Yeah it makes sense they would slide around or sag. After the small fortune spent at ZPacks of the last few years , I think I’ll just continue to use my shoulder strap pouches.
Hi 2 questions...I'm thinking about going to the zpacks backpack. Trying to decide between the arc blast or the nero. Which is more comfortable? My usual hikes are about 3 to 4 days. #2, I just made the fancy feast alcohol stove and I see you are taking the BRS 3000 with canisters. Have you had any issues with the alcohol stoves or not carrying enough alcohol or is the weight of 2 canisters just more convenient as a bottle of alcohol.
For comfort the arc blast takes the cake for sure. I find myself using the Nero and now another frameless backpack more and more. I love alcohol stoves way more than canister stoves. The reason why I switches this year was to get used to it more for when I start my Appalachian trail thru hike next year. I think canister fuel is going to be easier to come by for ressupply. Amy other time is just use alcohol. It's quiet and more lightweight for shorter thruhike trips like the 3 to 4 days you usually go on. I carried an alcohol stove and fuel in a big smarter water bottle on my Superior hiking trail thru hike over two weeks and it was perfect because there weren't really want towns that sold denatured alcohol along the way.
I've gotten to the point that I don't need a frame in my pack. It's a huge weight savings for me which in turn helps me recover faster because it's less strain on my joints.
Hi Frozen. How much is the total pack weight (with food + water + fuel) when u do a 5-day trip like this? Zpacks website says max should be 20lbs so im not sure how close u are to the limit.
For a 5 day trip I imagine I'd be around 23lbs. 4 day trips are usually starting at 21lbs. Though I'm just outside the max recommended specs from zpacks. I do have the padded hipbelt pockets on the pack which in my opinion take a lot of load off the shoulders than the normal hip belt that comes with it. I wouldn't load it up with anymore than 25lbs though. The fabric itself is really strong, same with the stitching.
Outdoor Adventures 23lbs for a 4 night trip, that’s what i imagined too. Im normally do 3-day weekend and my pack is at 21lbs (80% of my gears are like urs. I copied almost everything from ur channel. 😂). That’s why i couldn’t figure out how u do a 4-5 day and still below Zpacks spec 20lbs. Thanks for the clarification.
Very Good! I'll start packing tonight for our adventure. Maybe I'll make a pack video after our trip. I still have a few more areas to shave off some pack weight. It was neat to see Sintax in PA. I'll have to look at the map to see where Black Forest is in PA
Laying it out next to pack as you said “cutaway” is ingenious. 👏👏👏 Awesome demo. Thx
Welcome dude!
What a great video! I just purchased my first frameless pack and you answered a ton of questions! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Good call on flipping the fuel can when packing it in the pot to avoid the rust ring. Brilliant!
Drove me nuts for a long time until I figured I'd give it a try.
Rust=more iron for you :) extra healthy

Great video and so helpful when packing my MYOG frame less pack!
That was a very interesting pack loading presentation, I don't think I have ever seen one like that. Thanks
Thanks for the information as always Frozen!
I keep going back and forth on buying the nero. This has been helpful even for just packing my current bag. Thanks for sharing
You are very welcome

I have a video on electronics already but. I keep everything not waterproof in a Ziploc bag on top of my day food bag.
Thank you Frozen! I really appreciate how well you explain things. I have learned a lot from watching your videos.
You are very welcome KIm!
Ive watched this video twice now. Really great. Counting down until the AT Thru, Brother!
I can't wait as well! Gonna be a good time!
Great way to pack. It's crazy how similar our setups are. Funny how that is after watching your videos over the last few years. Although I have the Gossamer gear G4. I even flatten the back like you do when its packed. Thanks for all the reviews and tips.
Glad to see you can fit it all in there just fine..that pack looks pretty GOOD..Love these gear vids ..
I started carrying an REI Flash sit pad. It doubles as a pillow because of a snap attached to it, but you can easily unfold it at night if your feet get cold. It’s 3 oz. and I like its dual purpose.
Might be something you’re interested in if you’re using your Phoenix UQ!
Forgot to mention that the back clips in a ccf pad. I've had to use it on trips with the Phoenix
Haven't went frameless yet, but great demo for when I do.
Great pack demo amazing how well organizing works so well isn't.
Nicely done. Love that blue on the Nero.
Definitely my favorite style blue
Big ass help for my NERO . Thanks ! Gotta get the hook on Purel right away. Lots of good info.
They have the purel at Target btw. Glad it helped!
Excellent demo have yourself a good day
Is packing compact like this enough to have weight being transferred to the hipbelt? Thank you.
I had seen in one of your videos you mentioned maybe doing a video on pot cozies. I'm curious of you've made one? I'm looking and can't find it. Just interested in your suggestions. Thanks much! - Steve
I just got a new cook pot for Christmas and I was going to make a pot coozy for it. So I'll film it this go around. Stay tuned
Thanks for your insight. You gave me some ideas.
Got my T-shirt and bumper sticker today. There great. I do wish it would of been synthetic (t-shirt), not sure if you’ll see on the trail tho...
If you can recommend a synthetic shirt printing company I'd gladly upload the design. I haven't found a company that does it. This seems to be a common request for any outdoor youtube channel that puts out shirts too.
FORGOT THE GATO HE WILL FIT NICELY IN HIP POCKET
I like your system.... Would Hyperlyte POD's help you with the interior. Specifically everything above the nylofume contents ? Or possily that concept ? Good Stuff... thanks Kel = )
Nah it's not for me. I like less stuff sacks. But the pod system is great for organization.
Much thanks!
Nice info! I'm always picking up something new from your videos. Was the mio and clip on hand sanitizer a Gary inspired add-on haha! Just spotted his earlier today.
The mio was but the hand sanitizer on the pack is something literally every thru hiker does. It's a very convenient place to put it.
Outdoor Adventures good to know! I keep it with my food/ toiletries. I'll have to give it a shot!

Pack everything that you see in this video. 😀
Outdoor Adventures haha well that was easy enough! I'll start making adjustments 😀
Love this video
I just did a very similar video. Well done!
I know it is off-topic in relation to this video, but could you explain your continuous ridgeline that you have mentioned in other video's? Or maybe show how you have yours setup? Thanks!
No problem. I actually go over it in depth in this video: ruclips.net/video/KR2BbKGwPyc/видео.html

Pillow! Gas canister! What happened to you? You had that fancy dyneema bag with fleece for your pillow, and the alcohol stove set up.
Lol that pillow is only 1.95oz. worth it for me . I hate the cannisters stoves. But getting used to using them for the AT
Outdoor Adventures pocket rocket 2. Dont use that brs garbage. If you sigh it might put the thing out.
Outdoor Adventures That's a video series I'm looking forward to. (The AT) .... Any thoughts on the Pacific Crest sometime?
Great video as always...man I have to get a Ghost Whisperer...lol
go to camelcamelcamel.com and put the amazon link in there, you can set a watch price on it. Just leave it there. Usually they go down to 40-50% off. I got mine for 50% off a few years ago.

This is how I pack my hammock loadout, except the poop kit goes in the outside mesh pocket. Never know when the espresso will kick in.
Yea I keep switching my poop kit back and forth between the mesh and the inside. Usually I'm pretty regular in the morning. So it just stays inside
Personally, I wouldn't put my puffy at the bottom. If I have to stop because I get injured or for some other reason, I may need the puffy as a belay jacket to keep warm. Emptying the pack isn't a great idea in an emergency.
Do whatever feels comfortable.
How do companies measure the.liters of packs? Do they include all compartments, side pockets, and mesh pockets?
Some do, some don't ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You forgot to pack the cat?
I knew I forgot something!

@@FrozensAdventures I'm at 11. So couple lbs to go. Lol thanks for the info.

Yes it comes with the pack. They've updated it a trifold pad though.
@@FrozensAdventures cool. Thanks.

Right under 9 lbs for the loadout. Links to lighterpack in the video description.
