  • In this captivating Ep.5 of The Obi One Podcast, we bring you an exclusive and in-depth conversation with two legends of football, Roberto Di Matteo and John Obi Mikel. As we revisit one of the most memorable moments in football history - Chelsea's 2012 Champions League victory - our guests provide a behind-the-scenes look at the journey, the drama, and the glory of that historic campaign.
Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea's interim manager during the 2011-2012 season, opens up about the challenges and triumphs of his tenure. Di Matteo shares his insights on stepping into the managerial role mid-season, reshaping the team's strategy, and fostering a spirit of resilience and unity among the players. His narrative provides a unique perspective on how he led Chelsea to their first Champions League title, defying odds and expectations.
John Obi Mikel, a key figure in Chelsea's midfield during the Champions League run, reflects on the team dynamics, the intense preparations for each match, and the emotional rollercoaster of the campaign. Mikel discusses the impact of Di Matteo's leadership, the camaraderie within the squad, and his personal experiences during some of the pivotal matches leading up to the final in Munich.
The episode delves into the tactical approaches employed by Di Matteo to counter some of Europe's best teams. From the nail-biting knockout stages to the dramatic final against Bayern Munich, our guests dissect key matches, strategic decisions, and pivotal moments. They share insights into the dressing room atmosphere, the psychological battles, and the tactical nuances that defined Chelsea's path to the final.

Before the final, he is the one that got the video recordings from the players family to give them the message. Class act from him to get the players even more motivated with self belief.
People who did not watch the Semi Finals & Final live should know that, this Chelsea team finished 6th in the league & by far one of weakest Chelsea team & had no hope against a deadly Barca & Bayern team at the time. Those players defied all odds against them. Also, we sure did have good luck on our side too. God wanted Chelsea to win this.

That win against Barcelona was truly insane. It was an aging Chelsea squad against prime Barcelona where Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets were all in their prime. It was the greatest UCL campaign in terms of adversity faced imo.
And not to mention I remembered back then Torres was talked as the most expensive flop in history, yet he was the one who dealt the knockout blow against one of the best, if not the best team in history. 😂

Okay in the last podcast w Flo I said it HAD to be in the studio, but this was a special episode, maybe that special season under Roberto made it for me. As you are based in an area where most other footballers (especially ex CFC) aren't based, so more pods will have to be over webcam, may I make one suggestion. Getting the webcammer to record their audio and send it over will potentially make their audio so much easier to listen to, but I understand that may add a great deal of extra work!
Most of all Thanks Jon, thanks Robby and thanks to all that squad from the 2012 season for creating my and many others greatest footballing memory, being underdogs and fighting like your lives dependent on it is more inspiring than I think most of you will ever know
