A really insightful interview with one of the great German midfielders. I really think the secret sauce of European success is the early emphasis on street football, I certainly saw this is the Netherlands where kids cycled everywhere together, where older kids had the responsibility to look after the younger ones, and on the way back from school used to pitch up and play an hour or so, the emphasis on developing technical skills before becoming athletes, and introducing competitive football at a later age so reducing the influence of 'competitive dad's' and focusing on fun and enjoyment before the pressure of the 'win at all costs' of professional football and to play without fear. It would be great to get the views of Bergkamp, Laudrup and other European players who are also coaches and have been managers as well.
I loved how Michael gave a little laughter when he sais Leverk#U#sen after Simon said Leverk#AU#sen the 15th times in the interview, and then Simon just went on with his AU.
Agreed. I appreciate ex-players like Ballack for their insights but when it comes to more complex topics like 50+1 you often can't really expect a very sophisticated answer. 50+1 ensures that clubs are firmly anchored in the communities of their respective cities. This is why there are so many fans in German stadiums (the Bundesliga is the number one league in the world in terms of attendances, the 2. Bundesliga is the number five league in the world), because they identify with their club, which is partly theirs as a member. You also have the security of not ending up as a submissive propaganda tool for authoritarian dictatorships (Man City, PSG or Newcastle come to mind).
It might be more stable but it also hinders much needed developments as fans are always able to reject suggestions. In my opinion the Bundesliga could be much stronger if the clubs were managed more professionally and teams were more open for investors (without losing power of the fans). Everything else, infrastructure, fans, geographical position and economic power is already there.

So you're 1 minute mocking England for lack of trophies then you praise Germany & German teams for reaching finals but not winning???? And sometimes you can only reach the final because you had easy route but then faced a team who was always going to beat you in the final like WC2002 and even CL 2001/02 they were lucky vs ManUtd who had Beckham injured both legs and Leverkusen only progressed on away goals very flukily. Where as England have been knocked out in earlier stages by very marginal details/luck/fluke/bad refereeing decisions, harsh red card etc... but had they progressed they may well have gone all the way. Don't mock a team for lack of trophies if you're going to hypocritically praise average feats of others.

Impressed by Michael Ballack, enjoyed him in Forest Gump
At least Ballack made finals. England have only made it one time since 1966. And Leverkusen making the CL final was a great achievement even tho they lost.
Not a fan off zoom interviews tbh
me too but maybe there wasn't any choice
right? Our small brains cannot adapt to this
This is a great podcast series, but if the guests don't want to come to the studio - just bin them off. This is pure covid flashback.
Ballack lives in Germany. Maybe Simon Jordan should’ve gone to him. I don’t think it’s a big enough podcast to start flying guests in.
Came here to say this.
LOL, how stupid comment and even 5 likes. Kinda sad its so many idiots out there and that you have a right to comment on the internet.
Oh jog on fella. All the guests have prior media commitments so are usually in town. Michael currently has a busy career for both the German media and ESPN so he is currently preparing for the up coming Euro's as well as Bundesliga coverage. Furthermore it's not so long ago he lost his 18 year old son so maybe just getting an interview at all is something.
Couldn’t agree more
Before people say anything about him not being in studio they should think twice. Ballack lost his son in a tragic accident.
What does not being in the studio have to do with losing his son?
He's getting the words Leverkusen and Lederhausen get jumbled up in his head
Ballack isnt in the greatest midfielder conversation. He definitely should be
Simon Jordan, it’s called LEVERKUSEN, not LEVERKOUSEN 😂
