The MOST IMPORTANT Trick to Fishing a SPOON for Bass

- Fishing for bass with spoons is awesome this time of year especially as we go in to winter fishing and the cold water periods. it seems hard baits like spoons that mimic forage such as shad can be key to triggering bass to bite. One of the most important tricks to fishing magnum spoons I have found is not allowing the fish to jump once they're hooked. You basically reel down and drag the fish in and boat flip them no matter how giant they are. We go through some spoon fishing tips and how to find the right spoon bass on your graph.

When deep cranking a brush pile or spooning one what do you do if you get hung in it
Have a second spoon :) and another crank :)
Buy a light lure retriever or make s dyi one. I've been wanting one .
Use 65lb braid to 17lb fluoro leader lol
@@mynameisnotcory my alternative was to buy diving equipment lol
That's the most successful retrieve for me. I've even caught suspenders by counting it down and giving it a few cranks and stopping. Great info man.
I get excited when you put out a new video. It’s because they are informative. Keep’em coming dude.
really appreciate that man!
To go along with that comment- I often find myself with an issue or idea and I think “Hey, there’s a video about that on Mikeybalzz fishing RUclips channel”. Dude you are helping us more than you may ever know. Thanks. Tight lines and safe travels bro.
@@TheJTTaylor000 ahahha that's awesome. that's why i started shooting the vids. i was always looking for more info and could never find it so i thought i would do something about it! i don't know everything but if we all throw down a bit we're all gonna catch more fish!
Just ordered from.TW a Nichols mag spoon, among others to tryout this season offshore, and some hair jigs as well! Thx for the tips MBRF!
In my lake sandbass eat the 8" too. Gotta love the spirit!
Dude love watching your videos, very informative. Can you do a video on how you setup your Lowrance graphs, yours are always so clear?
Check this one out and see if it helps ruclips.net/video/C7VWdHb0X7A/видео.html
Perfect, thank you.
Come on down to Lake Murray South Carolina it will certainly work on your confidence as a bass fisherman for sure.
Great stuff as always. Heading down to central Florida in 3 weeks can't wait.
Another awesome video Mikey. Keep those cameras rollin.
great stuff as always Mikey - nice cut on that index finger...!!
Hit the Chickamauga today with the Mag spoon 🥄 it was work but caught a 6 pound spot bass all worth while!
Dude a 6lbs spot!!!! That's crazy, would love a shot at a spot that stout!
Great video Mikey! Love that big spoon thump. Where's Bog at? Lol keep up the great tips and advice! 👍
little to hot for the joker thanks for watching!
@@mikeybalzz yeah I hear you, gotta take care of the little guy 👍🙂
Add a swivel at the hook, it will help reduce their leverage
Sweet love the hubcap that bite is awesome. Where’s bogs at? Thanks good stuff 👍🏻
left him at the house was a little warm for the mouth breather.
A rod recommendation from me to you, is a 7'3 Heavy Glass Evergreen International Combat stick Jackhammer rod. Rod is so damn strong and bulky that I've caught 50 lb red fish on it, crevalles, small tarpon, sharks, etc. Extremely strong rod, I call it the Cadillac version of an Ugly stick. Rod is super fancy looking but Extremely powerful and strong as well. If you had a 18lb largemouth on it and had him hooked good, you can 10/10 boat flip that sum'gun.
What's the difference between the casting versus flutter spoons? And do you fish them the same way or is one more horizontal and one more for vertical???
Love the big Nichols. Seen on your first spoon vid a while back, it just made good sense so I bought one for $20. First drop I made with it over a bowl of spaghetti in 25', I get a big ol' "THUMP" and start retrieving. Toad 6+ lbr in a lake where a 10# Northern is the record! 😀 That's a confidence booster! I ALWAYS have one on deck.
dude that's sick!!! i love me some spaghetti!
Caught my first one on a big spoon today at Mitchell. 3lb largemouth
nicely done!
Thanks for recommending the talon spoon picked one up after this video and caught a ton of bass on it this weekend for the first time I've tried other spoons could never get a bite . Sad part is went back to Tacklewarehouse and there all sold out now 😢
that's awesome - it's a solid spoon, also take a look at the nichols lake fork, it's another good one.
@@mikeybalzz thanks will do for sure
Super duper videos bro!!
Great video man
Awesome video like always what's the rod from your friend for spoons you talk about ?
Jeez....I've been fishing these big spoons all wrong....which would explain why I've never caught a fish on one. I've been retrieving it more like a swimbait than popping it off the bottom like this. I'm already worried about snagging something on the bottom though....but I guess that's the chance you take if you want to use these things properly. Can't wait to get out there next weekend and try this technique out.
Great video as always Mikey. I haven’t been able to bring myself to cheat on Shimano in many years man. I’ve eyeballed those 13 Fishing reels for a while now. What’s your opinion on them?
as usual, you rock, good info dude 🤟
thanks bro!
Great vid!
What’s the best rod action for flutter spoon
Mikey what happen to
Your finger tip
Bud? Thanks for sharing the great fishing videos. How
Much did the big fish weight?
let's just say never offer to cook dinner.
Great video 👍
Monster spoon fish! I have to try spoon fishing!
Thanks for another great video man I have fished a lot of rooster tails but I have some spoons I've been wanting to use more I have a lot of my grandpa and uncles spoons and a lot of other old lures they have but I am scared to use them but have given a couple a rattle traps of theirs a go. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and I hope I get to fish with you one day you should come to Lake Granbury in Texas
happy thanksgiving dude!
What size are you using
What size hook did you put on the magnum spoon and regular spoon man?
You just sold me some Talon spoons sir! 👍🏻👌🏻
i need to start scuba diving there's about 30 of them on the bottom of that lake.
Hey bro, no stinger hook? Why? Why not? Thoughts? Keep up the awesome vids!
so stinger hooks works great but i've found it tends to hook them in the eye and i don't like that.
Is it possible to catch bass on big spoons from the bank?
So let’s say you’ve got that same bream school but they are on a weed line/patch that grows 7-10 feet tall. Would you still use the spoon?
Big lipless. Ripping it off the grass
that big lipless idea is spot on!
Mikey, how do you get back to those fish when you cruise over them and see them on the rear transducer? I can find them on the graph, but I can never seem to get the boat repositioned to be able to accurately locate them again to cast to them. Can't tell if I am just dumb or if I am doing something wrong???
i just drop a waypoint and then use my point one to point the boat at the fish and cast. i'll also used the range lines on the graph to estimate how far away i am from them.
What are those black dots all over those fl bass
They don't always hit those because they're hungry. They hit em because they are being aggressive or territorial. That's why you catch fish the same size as the lure you were using.
Mikey how deep do you recommend fishing the spoons out here in Guntersville?
i've fished them from 12ft all the way down to 25ft
@@mikeybalzz ok thanks
I neeeed this video
Hey Mikey,
Do you ever go braid to flourocarbon/monofilament?
no man that impact imo is just too much when setting the hook with a stout rod and heavy line.
@@mikeybalzz
Gotcha, thanks
You don't crank with braid either?
@@offshore33cc94 nope except for traps in grass
mikeybalzz fishing what do you mean by impact? Like pulling the hook out there mouth? I use a heavy rod with a fast action tip and always run heavy braid to fluoro no issues
@@mynameisnotcory no i mean impact on the knot. ii wouldn't trust the knot between the braid and flouro to hold up with the impact.
Have you tried the Nichols Lake Fork Flutter Spoon?
nope, should i?
mikeybalzz fishing you should! I flip those on Texoma docks in the Snow White color :)
What’s your spoon rod set up? Especially since your casting them
i like a longer rod like an 8ft or 7 11 heavy with a fast taper. high speed reel - i think this one was a 8 2 1 13 fishing reel.
You ever use the fish reveal on your lowrance units?
nope prefer to just cross reference 2d against structure scan on my own.
Sold my bass boat to buy a center console a couple years ago when I thought I was moving to Florida. Finally making the move to Estero near the Bass Pro. Using my old Gen 3s and a new live on the new boat. Was just curious as to why you still used regular 2d and not the reveal option. I'll be fishing mainly pits in that area and targeting offshore structure.
Thanks for the vids man! You do a great job of giving out legit info. Keep up the good work!!!
@@DavidWhite-lc1fc Awesome congrats on the move man!, I used to live right near there!
@@mikeybalzz I figured you did. I'm going to assume you at least fished a lake near Istokpoga since there aren't many deep lakes in SW Florida. That's one of the things I like about your vids. You're like me. You like the offshore deep structure...
Did you get your graphs dialed in the way you want them?
mostly, i'm always toying around with them.
What is your rig setup for this? Is that a Daiwa reel?
He was using a Powell 8ft heavy with a 13 fishing concept A reel. At the end, he talked about getting a Halo 7'11" Ti rod.
Jigging spoons in cold water I have dialed in. I want so badly to add these in summer and fall but I swear if I buy 4 I will lose all four of them in the first 30 minutes lol. Every freakin time. Gets expensive really fast. I don't know, maybe I'm doing something wrong?
very true!
Does it work for big smallies?
that i don't know. i think guys have caught some smalljaws on ledges withh them during the summer
Wow
what is your setup for spooning
a7 11 or 8ft rod, heavy action fast taper and a high speed reel, 20-25lbs flouro.
Good vid...but 5's, 6's, 7's & 8's? Lol! I saw one 5. You have more revisionist history than my mother! 🤣
The most important thing in spoon fishing is a barrel swivel
No stinger hook?
if it was a derby probably but i've found the bass end up hooked in the face and sometimes the eye so i try to avoid it.
Understand completely.
Catch more bass with a treble on the front as well.
THE ENTIRE REASONI STUMBLED ACROSS THIS VIDEO IS FOR THE TALON CASTING SPOON AND YOU SAID LINK IN DESCRIPTION ...WHERE?
That is not a spoon. That is the entire dinner plate.
Lol. Ton of fun (and work) to throw.
ahahahahah
Word on Lake Fork is that the Joe Spaits Spoon is $$$
Good thing the best buddy wasn't in the boat, I think he would have hooks in his face. I got to get a dog to stay in the boat it looks soo cool to have a buddy like that. My dog goes ape shit in the boat.
i tend to agree man!
So what umm interested in is how do you break down a lake that you've never seem before and have heard very little about....i realize with
Friends like j.t. there probably aren't many lakes that you haven't heard something about....but for shits and giggles let's assume that your going tio a lake....well just day lake fort Gibson in Oklahoma.....you've never seem it, heard of it or been to it...or heard anything about it....your launched what do you do...what do look for...? what's the first thing on your mind ? Graphing, main lake points , follow your gut.... what do you do ... had to the upper or lower end looking for clearer or dingier water.....well.....break it down!!!!
Where my boy boag ??
sleeping in the AC ahhahaha
Most effective way, have an easy mode fiah finder to find the fish for you
Not "stupid" smart for giant spoon fishing
Tip #1 have 5k-10k in electronics.
Junk fish lol. I consider bass junkfish.
Sonar = Wack , ..
